When I lived in Denver, I went to see Dr. John Heavrin at Women's Health Consultants.. He has an office in Littleton and an office at SkyRidge Hospital.. He's warm, kind, compassionate, knowledgeable about PCOS and (this was a huge plus for me) a Christian.. I totally 100% recommend him.

Now I'm living in Memphis and am in search of an OB/GYN.. any suggestions? :)

Hey MCOULTHER!

The best doctor in the whole wide world for PCOS is Michael K. Bohrer of RMA of NJ (Reproductive Medicine Assoc. of NJ). His practices have offices all over NJ, but I believe his main office is Morristown. Call him at 973-656-2089. There are other physicians that specialize in PCOS also, and their expertise is great!.

He helped me have 2 beautiful boys in my early 30s and I couldn't have better things to say about him.

Hi,
Can anyone recommend a PCOS specialist in Dallas, TX or the general DFW area? I have called a few endocrinologists and have been turned down...I guess because they don't know much about it?

I am not interested in fertility treatments so I have not tried an RE Dr....should I, will they help with treatment of the other symptoms?

Any Recommendations for NJ / NYC??? I have seen a few Reproductive Endocrinologists as recommended from a Dr. and Fellow PCOS sufferers, but they just seem to focus on the infertility part, and not on finding the underlying issue. I need to get better before I plan to have a baby.

So if anyone can give me a suggestion for a good specialist in NJ or NYC, I will be so grateful!

Thanks Ladies!

For anyone in the Pittsburgh area:
I recommend the UPMC Diabtes/Endocrinology clinics. I go to the one in the Faulk Building in Oakland, but I believe there are other locations. The specific Doctor I see is Helena Levitt, and she is fantastic. I believe the others would probably be pretty good as well. One of them was featured in Pittsburgh Magazine's "Top Doctors."

In Denver, I go to Dr. Lynn Joffe at DTC Family Health. When I went to her with my symptoms she immediately diagnosed my PCOS even though I had no clue what was wrong with me. She's been really good to work with and is always available by email. She specializes in women's health.

Hi MRIEHLE,

I live in the Portland area and have been to lots of different doctors over the last 15 years that I have been struggling with PCOS. I finally found a naturopath that specializes in PCOS, hormone, and thyroid conditions. She is the ONLY Dr. that I have seen that has gotten me results. Her name is Dr. Deborah Rice and she works out of Sherwood Family Medicine (it's an integrative health clinic with both MDs and NDs). Because of the nature of the clinic, often medical insurance that doesn't normally cover naturopaths cover it at this clinic. I would definitely recommend looking into it.

I hope this information was helpful. :-)

Doctor in Charlotte NC

After many many years of trying to find the right Dr I finally found Dr John Cleek at the Carolinas Wellness and Weight Loss Center on 7th St. He is the only one who could explain to me what I had and how to go about treating it. I have finally gotten on the right track and the weight is finally starting to come off. Hope this helps

I have been using the CREIGHTON MODEL FertilityCare™ System for over 5 years. I started using this form of natural family planning as a way not to go on birth control before I got married in July 2006. Within a few months of using the system my CREIGHTON MODEL FertilityCare™ System teacher, Nancy Malo of Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH, thought I may have PCOS and sent me to a CREIGHTON MODEL FertilityCare™ System doctor, Dr. Mark Rollo of Fallon Clinic in Fitchburg, MA. He confirmed her thoughts and prescribed me Metformin and Promitrum and my general practitioner now manages my meds and I have only had to visit Dr. Rollo a handful of times. Dr. Rollo is a regular GP with additional training in the CREIGHTON MODEL FertilityCare™ System.

Someone mentioned Dr Mira Aubuchon before. She moved to Columbia Missouri. I currently go to her and she is great!!!! Very straight forward and wants patients to be active in their care. I'm not ttc and she's still very interested in treating me which is nice. I already had a bunch of bloodtests and such com my pcp so she only did an ultrasound. Said it was obvious before the ultrasound and didn't know why I hadn't been diagnosed before. On yasmin, metformin, and spironolactone. Like I said, I got to take part in all of the decision making.

I am looking for a hypothyroidism doctor in the Baltimore/Annapolis area and came across Dr. Wartofsky's name. I contacted his office and was given Dr. Wexler and Dr. Kundra's names. I am looking for someone that treat the symptoms not just the blood results and is receptive to Armour. Can you tell me about Dr. Kundra and how you came across her.

Is she very knowledgeable in treating PCOS? Fertility is no longer a concern (happy to have my 2 kids), but acne, hair loss, metabolism, and brain fog are my problems. Would she be helpful? I live near Dearborn, too.

Currently I see Dr. Adriana Suarez in Tampa, FL.

For those of you trying to get pregnant, like myself... I am currently on Clomid. I have completed two cycles. I just bought a book called "If at First You Don't Conceive" (which is an awesome book). In it, it describes all of these tests that should be performed to make sure there isn't anything else wrong.
I take Clomid on days 5-9 and on day 14 I have a vaginal ultrasound to see how I've responded. But I've never had any blood work or any other test done.

Is this normal? What are your experiences? I just want to make sure I'm at the right doc for my situation!

Thanks!

Dr. Robert L. Smith, Dr M.D.
Dr. Melchiades J. Loman, Md., F.A.C.O.G.

Women's Care Center
5422 US Hwy 19
New Port Richey, FL 34652
(727) 849-1659

I went to MANY MANY Dr's - some of which had never HEARD of PCOS. A friend recommended Dr. Smith and Dr. Loman to me because they had helped 2 of her friends as well as herself get pregnant rather quickly. Well, I went in and was impressed right away. I told him I had PCOS, he very quickly explained PCOS to me (All information I already know because I have EXTENSIVELY studied up - but he was 100% accurate). He immediately prescribed my meds to me and so far so good. Dr. Smith talks very quickly - so you have to be on your toes and listen - but he seemed to know his stuff and wasn't AT ALL degrading or anything!!!! He just said..."I want you to eat 1200-1500 calories daily, take these meds, and hopefully we can get those periods started for you and get you pregnant." -- It was so nice to be in a nice, high-tech office where people were NICE to me and were EDUCATED about PCOS.

I highly recommend this Dr if any of you live in the Tampa Bay, Florida area.

He's a decent OB/GYN who bills himself as a PCOS specialist, and he was the only person I've seen in the last 20 years to actually care what my symptoms might mean and diagnose me. I sometimes feel like he ignores things that would make him think outside of the typical medical profession box, such as herbal supplements.

I've recently found a Pcos specialist in Tyler, TX when before the closest ones were in Houston. I've only had one appt with her but she actually listened and seemed to ask all the right questions, ran all kinds of tests including cushings and was shocked that I hadn't been tested before. I'll update after I see her again and get my labs back.

Dr. Elizabeth Martin in Columbus, Georgia diagnosed me right off the bat when I first moved here. She knew right away what was wrong! In the beginning she was awesome and spent a lot of time with me. After a couple of years she began rushing in and out. Not to mention I had to wait FOREVER when I had an appointment. I have a brand new doctor now but he's not a PCOS doc.

If you're in the Atlanta/Gwinnett County area I hiiiighly recommend Dr. Bruce J Sabin. He also works with a woman's doctor named Nikki Taylor. They're both easy to get along with and funny. I hear so many stories of women being misinformed about PCOS and not being diagnosed by their docs, but Dr. Sabin caught my PCOS immediately.

I really do not like the nurses though.

After nine docs and a trip to the Cleveland Clinic (they couldn't even diagnose me!) I found two docs close to home.

Dr. Shelby Raiser (PCP) and Dr. John Paes (Endo.)

They are actually working together. Dr. Raiser is only about 5 miles from my house, but Dr. Paes is a good hour to hour and a half drive. He lets me coordinate most of my care with Dr. Raiser and I see him about 4 times a year. I never thought I would find doctors who were willing to work together!

I am seeing Dr. Unell at the Fem Centre in Colleyville TX, but the trick for me is my nutritionalist, Maynon, at the Energy Center of the Fem Centre. She has put me on all kinds of natural suppliments, has advised me to change my eating habits laid out what to eat, ect. I have lost about 7 lbs in 2 weeks and I haven't even started a strict workout plan yet! www.femcentre.com

Hi everyone! I found a great endocrinologist in San Diego, CA her name is Dr. Manganelli she is with the Scripps hospital. My family lives in CA but I'm currently a student in Washington, DC. Can anyone recommend a good doctor in the DC area?

Happy Holidays!

I hate when the doctors act like you're not trying at all! I work out and lift weights. I don't restrict my calories near as much as you do. I'm up at about 1250-1550/day. I actually heard you shouldn't drop below 1200 per day for women. I know if I go below 1200 I can't function.

I've had a "hump" at the base of my neck since I was a teenager. You say they're testing for Cushings? I'll have to ask about that next time I'm in.

I hope you find a doc that actually takes you serious. I have yet to find a doctor that actually recommends a medication to me. Everyone says "sorry, you'll never have children and other than living a healthier lifestyle there's little we can do".

Jessie

PS. I have another for the DO NOT see list: Dr. Kevin Fritz, UPMC Internal Medicine in Bethel Park (Pittsburgh), PA. He's nice enought but no matter what I ask him he automatically refers me to another doctor. I made an appointment to specifically talk about diet/healthy eating options, I had various books and diet plans with me. He didn't even look at them or discuss my options. He told me to lose no more than 1 lb/month and eat no less than 2,000/day and to work out more (no specifics on aerobic vs weight bearing etc). He also told me to use places on the web like Calorie King etc (good sites I already knew about). He's the one that wants to put me on meds for HBP and Cholesterol and I begged him to let me try to reduce things on my own. He gave me 3 months.

WENDIE,
I so can feel for you! When they told me I had PCOS my family Dr also told me I had kidney problems. She sent me to see an endo and that Dr was SO rude! He said " Well I dont know why they sent you to me if you cant take the merforam there is nothing I can do for you take care of your kidneys and have a nice life" and that was that. So if anyone know of a good Dr in St. Louis MO PLEASE let me know.

Another to add to the DO NOT SEE list:

Priya Maseelall at Reproductive Gynecology in Westerville, OH. I'm not saying the whole practice is bad, but I really felt seeing her was a waste of time. She totally discounted me telling her that I eat right and exercise and can't lose weight. She told me I need to join Weight Watchers and that will do the trick. She ran blood work and was not at all concerned that my trigylcerides were elevated. I read that can mess with your metabolism, but she didn't even suggest changes or retesting. She also thought I was interested in losing 5 or 10 lbs. I said to my husband I wasn't sure if I should take that as a compliment or is she really that ignorant.

I have not been able to find anyone who can help me yet. However I can tell you who not to see in Charlotte North Carolina

Dr. woods at Midtown Obstectrics, when asked him about symptons he was willing to test me for PCOS, but when the blood work came back and showed that I could have PCOS he refused to talk anymore about it. Telling me that I would have to go to my regular family dr, and let them check into it. He also does not look at the ultrasounds he just reads the the measurements. So if you have lots of little cyst on your ovaries he doesn't know because he only looks for the big ones that they can measure.

Dr. Pierre Martimbeau, all in all he seems to be a great doctor. He will actually read your notes and ask questions. He is willing to talk to you. The problem that I had with him is that I felt that once he came to a conclusion of what he thought was going on he was pretty much done with you. When my husband and I asked him about other questions he would either say this isn't your problem or your family dr has to do this.

I see an Endo dr at the end of October I will let you know either way on how I feel about them.

I live in western KY and drive over an hour to see this guy. He's very aggresive on testing. I went to doctors in Paducah KY for 15 years with the same symtoms and I was told everything from "No you don't have PCOS" to "Yes you have it but we can't treat you for it". I decided to switch after watching my sister with hers. She was seeing a doctor in Memphis, but by the time they caught it, it was almost to late to treat it. She has developed thyroid problems, high blood presure, and developed a pre-cancerous tumor in her uterus all because she had PCOS that went untreated for so long.

Other doc anther walk out of the docs office desapped. I went tues for my new endo. Oh was that not so fun, She was supposed to be a expert when it came to pcos, but all I really felt was put down by her. The restent doc gave me a real good examination and found that I have a hump starting on the back of my neck. So they the restent doc is testing me for cushing even though the doc that I was going to see say she dosen't belive that I have it.
The doc I went to see was like well we are not hiding anything from you, you have PCOS and there is not much we can do if you can't take the metforam. So work out 5-6 days a week for 60-70mins and have only a 1000cals. Even though I told the doc I am eating 700-900 a day. and that I am working out 4-5 days a week. But still she just gave this look like yeah right. I am not looking to have anymore kids, I just want to feel like a normal 27 year old. So I guess we will see were this goes. They took more blood guess we will have to see.

Still trying to get a referral to a local endocrinologist. They don't think I need to see them so they won't take me. UGH!!! They are only going on the hormone and diabetic bloodwork I've taken which show me in the "normal range". It's so very frustrating! Wish I could find someone that would see me, I'd even drive a little ways if I had to. Since this dr won't see me, I'm wondering if they're very good anyway.

We are currently stationed out of Hawaii and I just started seeing a specialist at Trippler Army Medical Center. He is actually located in the Fertility Clinic, but he also treats PCOS. His name is DR. PILGRIM. Now in order to get into see him I had to get a referral from my PCM (Primary Care Manager aka Family Dr). I have only seen him once so far, but am impressed by the fact I have seen a change for the first time in years regarding the PCOS in positive direction. I hope this helps any military girls stationed out here and facing the same struggles I am.

I am from Southern Wisconsin just north of the Illinois border in Beloit, WI. I however go 40 min north to Edgerton, WI to see Dr. Vern Partello at Mercy Edgerton Medical Center. My friend Jenny had refered me to him when I called her frustrated with the medical attention I was getting at Mercy Clinic South in Janesville. One visit with Dr. Partello and he had ordered labs to see where we where at. He ordered me off my Insulin (that the previous dr. had put me on) He adjusted my Metformin, and was straight to the point. He doesnt believe in stacking medications on a patient, and is part of a weight loss clinic. He told me that he would see me back in 2 weeks and to let him know in those two weeks how serious I was about getting better. He said he was willing to bet money that if I lost 60 to 80 pounds my insulin resistance would go away. The other doctors never touched on my PCOS, and diagnosed me with Diabeties. Dr. Partello never once mentioned Diabeties and said there was no need for me to be on Insulin and that I did however have a insulin resistance. He said after he received the labs back he was going to discuss with me which course of action I believed that we sould take and she which mix of medications would best suite my situation with out puting me on a handfull of pills and breaking my bank with the cost. My metformin is 4 dollars at the Walmart pharmacy where as all my other medications where 40 and up and that is with my rx coverage. I have been very pleased with Dr. Partello and actually look forward to going to my doctor appointments because of a doctor that is activilly involved with his patients care. I can not recommend him enough!! emoticon

In Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr. Gillian Graves at the IWK Women's Center. She is a women's endocrinologist. You would need a referral from your family doc. She is very approachable and takes the time to explain everything to you in a way you can actually understand.

In the South Florida area, Dr. Kenneth Gelman is an excellent choice! He is an experienced reproductive endocrinologist who specializes in PCOS treatment as well as other reproductive issues.

If anyone would like more information about him, please send me a SparkMail and I will provide his phone number, etc.

i see an endocrinologist in rockford IL if anyone needs/wants her name/number. she is really realistic, and i am thinking somewhat aggressive.

it's hard to really give suggestions when we are all over the world huh. hope someone is able to help you.

Keep on keeping on!

He was the first doctor to take my concerns and problems seriously. He's extremely compassionate and has a wonderful personality. He takes the time to learn about each patient. I don't know if he has a spectacular memory or just makes very through notes in the chart (I'm guessing the chart, but at least he takes the time to review it before walking in the door!), but when you come back for visits, he asks about things not related to the visit! His staff is top notch, too!

Dr. Eric Orzeck - Endocrinologist

Houston, TX 77025

He's a great doc -- he knows exactly what insulin resistance is and PCOS. I also love that he participates in Doctors Without Borders and regularly does charity work in the Native American community. He also helped with medical care for Katrina evacuees in the Houston Astrodome. Makes me even more proud to say "That's my doctor!"

I beleive that he also sees patients in Bala Cynwyd. I no longer live in that area, but HIGHLY recommend him.

If anyone knows of someone in the Columbus, OH area I would love to hear about it.

I've struggled for so many years with all the PCOS symptoms like IR, acne, hair loss, hair on face, weight problems etc..to just get past around from endo to gyno to dermo..etc. No one would or could pin-point what the hell was going on with me...It was like if no one would listen to me.Or even believe me. Basicaly, it was just pay your copay, get seen for about 5 minutes, then that was it..Allthough all my labs would come back ok, I was still going through all those symptoms..and actually still am....I just thought it would be a good idea for those of you lady's that have found that special doctor, endo, gyno,dermo..etc to SHARE, SHARE, SHARE...share with us..give the State, city, name, address, and even phone number of that special doc, you know the one that actualy cares and is interested in helping you get better and one that actually knows what PCOS is...I am still looking for one of those...lol..So maybe if we post all of that, that one person in your city and state will not have to waste money and times, and more importantly HEALTH looking for that special PCOS doctor that you might already know...so SHARE...pass it on..
