Oh yes, there is one every Saturday morning downtown as a part of "Main Street" It has grown to include bakery products, fresh seafood, homemade soaps right along with the fruits and veggies. A couple of years ago they added a craft area right across the street. It is a great way to spend a SaturdaY MORNING.

Yes I do. I love getting my veggies from local sources and they usually end up being much less expensive.

FITINEASTBAY--Your post made me think of a great yogurt store "Fraiche" with the Milk Truck that stops at their store daily, and wonderful regular and frozen yogurt, in full fat, lowfat and nonfat. They had all the metal pieces to "make" the yogurt shipped from Europe! I love it and so nice to know it is SO GOOD FOR ME.

CAMDENCYCLIST--
Yes, farmers markets are great with the fresh fruit, veggies, flowers, and various other food and non-food items. End up needing a big bag! I have pretty local access from 3 sites per week, so I better go more often!

Love my farmers' markets. I go to 2 on Saturdays and one on Wednesdays. I'm going away this weekend to Atlanta and have to see if there is one down there because I am going to be SO depressed if I miss my farmers' market high this weekend!

When I go biking, I repeat a mantra of the day's sensations: bright sun, blue sky, warm breeze, blue jay's call, ice melting and so on. This helps me transcend the traffic, ignore the clamorings of work, leave all the mind theaters behind and focus on nature instead. I still must abide by the rules of the road, of biking, of gravity. There are several in town where I live, all of them are on different days and times of the week. I do ask if it is local (I live in IN and we got some MI peaches on Sunday which is better than GA!) and if it is organic. I walk to one which is 3 blocks from my house.
I have a thread on my hometown team that has a list of all the farmers markets, hours and dates open!

Yes, frequently. But, we're also fortunate to have a nice big garden in our back yard, so it's just a little walk to pick fresh produce.

You can check localharvest.org for a list of farmers markets near you as well as local CSAs!

I used to not go to the farmers market so much--believe it or not, I wasn't that impressed with Berkeley's Saturday market! But I recently moved and have an absolutely fantastic market about 1.5 miles away, so I get my walk in on Saturday mornings and pick up all my fresh fruits and veg! I also care more that it's local rather than organic for most items, however for stone fruits and corn I try to go organic (even if it's not certified). And I have a great egg guy that makes me laugh!

I used to go to the Farmer's Market in Peoria, but since I moved to the country, that is too far to drive. I found a nice little farmer's market in a small town about 6 miles from here. A woman with a 40 acre "garden" sells organic produce, an Amish family sells noodles and bread, and a local farmer sells what is available, last week it was potatoes. I didn't go this morning, but I will next Friday. I try things that I probably wouldn't otherwise.

Sarah, I probably see you there -- that's the Tuesday on in Fremont Park, right? I work at 17th & Capitol, so my friend & I (& often some others) walk there also. It's a great little market, isn't it?

I love the local farmer's markets on the weekends. Get to stroll thru, pick your flowers and veggies/fruits/nuts/breads/honey/etc. etc.!!
Fun to talk to the farmers too. Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Los Altos in CA are easy to get to & great.
Then get to eat it! So hard to not eat too much!

Yes I use 2 different markets and I ask the vendors as some do spray and some truck stuff in. The produce I do it get is so yummy. There are websites if you google that tell you the markets in your area. Also eat Local websites for grocers that carry local and or organic produce.

There are three very good farmers markets pretty close to me that I go to as often as I can, although each is only open one day per week: Saturday, Sunday or Monday. One is downtown (about 8 miles away) and I drive there. It's all local and much is organic. I have a couple favorite vendors there from whom I buy most of my stuff since they are chemical-free (uncertified organic). Sunday's market is closer, maybe 3 miles away and I drive there too (usually on my scooter since no highways required). Not as much of it is organic, but it has a great selection.

I don't think Monday evening's market has opened in my area yet, but I would typically get there on my way home from work. It's about 1.5 miles from my house. Fewer vendors, less organic options, but still good.

I don't care as much about organic when I'm buying at the farmers market--just that it's fresh and local. But I do try to avoid non-organic corn, for example, simply knowing GMO is widespread in that crop. I love to get my eggs, some fresh herbs, all of the starter plants for my garden each spring, and even some homemade whole wheat bread at the market whenever I can.

Good discussion!

Nicole

Oh yeah, I use the farmers markets that are close by plus the three farm store/ outlet / markets that run pretty much all year. Most are organic and some truck in. Many things grow in the willamette valley even in winter.

I love the farmer's markets. I work in downtown Sacramento, so there's one less than a block away. I walk to that one. We some times go to the one in Davis (where we live) thats about 3 miles and we bike.

I get a Cooperative Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) box full of veggies each week, so I tend to look for things that aren't in it. Also the one near work has fabulous nuts. Before the stone fruit came into season I was picking up fruit almost weekly. I'm more concerned with taste than organic certification, so generally go local.

How many of you are using farmer's markets in your area during this time of year? What do you look for? Do you check if the food is organic? really local? How far do you drive to get there? Do you walk? bike?

Since I live in a suburb with no sidewalks and the closest farmers market is about 8 miles away, I drive to ours. (however, I usually combine it with other errands in the same area). Many of the booths are from organic, although, I have found a few truck in produce from the south or from Indiana. Mostly look for fresh veggies, but there are honey vendors, plant vendors, and other things at the one I go to. An alternate one (about 9 miles away) has rabbit, organic beef and buffalo!
