One of my local stores, LivinGreen, carries Nature's Carpet, made from 100% NZ wool. While this is an environmentally-friendly option, there are the animal-rights issues to consider. I won't buy wool from Australia due to the continued practice of mulesing, but might think about NZ wool products.

Here are some links:

Also, both Mohawk and Shaw make carpets from recycled PET bottles. Mohawk has a carpet that contains 37% fiber from corn. Still trying to get more information on these products to determine how "green" they really are.

Bamboo, recycled carpet (made from PET), recycled tiles....

The greenest option is reusing flooring--from a salvage yard, from freecycle, etc. I did that in my first house.

I have the same question for a kitchen/laundry floor. I don't want ceramic tile which I have had and it tires my legs and breaks everything I drop. What is green and what kind of floor do others like and why? I have read that there can be unhealthy outgasses from some carpets, stain treatments, glues, and padding. Anyone want to recommend a floor they love in their kitchen?

I need to replace the carpet in our three bedrooms as well as tile my bathroom, closet and the kitchen/pantry.

Has anyone found any great "green" carpet? I know some people recommend wool carpet, but that brings in the whole animal ethics issue. I'd have to be sure the wool wasn't sourced in Australia where mulesing is still practiced.

For the tile, I really like the look of stone. Anyone know of great eco-friendly natural or synthetic tiles?

Any ideas or references would be greatly appreciated!!!
