So psyched, I found a really nice Swiss Gear suitcase for $12. The handle for wheeling it was getting stuck so I got in there and fixed it. Just like new!

Got a nifty pair of Jayli wrap pants for a quarter the other day. They look really cool.

Reading all of your posts about thrift shopping is making me jones! Since I have been losing weight pretty consistently I clean out my closet and donate then restock from the thrift store. Most of the clothes I have found thrifting turn out to be better quality & so much less $$. I can't bring myself to buy anything new now!

Wow, Packmom, that's great! I have a grown daughter who goes to private clothing sales that the wealthier members of our community have. She gets amazing clothes (well made, good fabric) that will last a long time. Her latest was a $400 sweater (yikes!) that she bought for $40.

I love yard/garage sales in the spring and summer. I am the mother of 5 kids and bought a lot of my kids clothes at sales. Also I go to Goodwill stores in may towns when we travel, you can find new to almost new things there all the time. My daughter got a pair of Italian designer frames for sunglasses, that we took in and put prescription lenses in for her. We were told they would have cost over $500 new and we paid $8 for them. She was thrilled.

emoticon Hi! I love yard/garage sales, free cycle, criegs list, and group rummage sales. I do surveys and when they ask what store I shop at for clothes I always put down thrift stores. My whole house is furnished with other peoples "junk". I find it refreshing to find something I'd never thought obout having except I saw it at a resale .

Well, it's not from a thrift store, but I got something I really, really needed from someone who didn't need it anymore. I posted on freecycle for a baby gate, and now my chickens aren't coming up onto the deck anymore. As Martha Stewart used to say, "That's a good thing!"

When my grandparents moved out of their house into assisted living they gave us a bunch of their furniture. I absolutely love the coffee table in my living room that belonged to my great-grandmother. It's painted with flowers, but there is only one small chip that isn't noticeable in the design, unless you know it's there.

Yes my estranged husband and I thought so too, but it went from a hobby and a need for certain items, to obsessive compulsive, to mental illness......lol.....that is what I told HGTV when they came and video taped our home where HE still lives for 3 hours. They said we were chosen for a tv segment on HGTV for a new series, and we are still waiting.

MY EX HAS RUINED OUR HOME. EVERY CORNER PACKED...BASEMENT HAS MILK CRATES UP TO THE CEILING AND ONLY 18 INCH PATHWAYS THROUGH 3 ROOMS.

Same with the sheds, attic and garage.

How do you get rid of that? He has an eBay business and justifies that he needs it to make a living but at age 62, he will be spending the rest of his life wrapping a few items a day and then standing on line at the P.O. shipping it out.

My heart is broken. That is why I live here and he lives in my house that I bought when I was 22 with my first husband who died at age 41 in 1984.

Love, love, love thrift stores. My boys like to wear track pants (they find regular pants itchy), and I can always keep them well supplied via the thrift store.

Wow, I don't know if i have found anything I couldn't live without, but I have found some bargains!

Last summer I found a Crock Pot for a dollar, a sofa bed, brand new, for TEN bucks!! A new fish tank for my snake for $7.00 - the list goes on!!

I wait with baited breath every year for these yard sales!!! They turn me into some kind of bargain fiend!!

My mom got me hooked on garage sales when I was about 2... that was typically the only way I would get "new clothes" or a bike or a book. I used to think it was because we were broke... then as I got older I came to realize that my mom was just being money-wise. When my son was born, my mom went berzerk at garage sales, and there was clothes he never wore that she bought for quarters or dollars. Her response: sell them at a garage sale. So, we started a new cycle and have hosted several since. My brother bought his coveted Rayban sunglasses... for $1 at a garage sale.

Last year, When we moved into our new home we had a "moving in sale". We found there were things we no longer needed coming out of storage, there were things left from the prior owners, and there were things that just didn't "fit" anymore... AND it was a great opportunity to meet some of the neighbors. It was fun, and we booked a decent day's return on our "treasures". The cool thing: you never know what you're going to find. Or what new best friend you're going to meet.

I always try to buy secondhand first and foremost. 80% of my furniture, for example, is previously owned. I frequent antique stores and consignment shops. I LOVE all the things I've found so far and I always get compliments on my home and my clothes--probably because I am able to find unique items that don't look like what other people see every day. Secondhand rules!

I also highly recommend searching Craigslist. I bought a 50s dining table with 8 chairs there in amazing condition that's sure to last another 50 years!

Grebjak: isn't it great how we get attached to our bikes? The one I ride these days actually belongs (still) to my DD. If she would let me buy it, I would cough up the money on the spot!

Incidentally, I had an old bike I bought for $12 several years back. It looked a lot like the one Elvira Gulch rode in "The Wizard of Oz," and it made the most ungodly screech as I rode it. Some creep stole it right off my front porch! It later turned up at a garage sale I visited, and I called the police. They could do absolutely nothing to get it back for me because I never registered it. Now, I keep my bike inside the house where it's always in the way, and I had it registered just in case someone breaks the lock when I've got it parked at the library, or wherever.

Lynn,
Sometimes those finds can really kill you. I know I've had a few of them. But if you don't need it, don't get it, right? It's part of being responsible with our resources. But it does bite. I have a few regrets as well. And if you did need it, there's always U-haul. :)
Note: Most thrift-stores either offer a delivery service, or will hold an item for you until you can make arrangements to have it picked up.

The best buy I ever saw in a thrift store was at a Goodwill in Killeen, Texas - home of Ft. Hood, so this was probably brought in by someone about to deploy. I wanted it bad but had no way to get it home: a golden oak bedroom suite - queen bed four-poster, triple drawer dresser with mirror, chest-of-drawers, two night tables. $400 Not a scratch on it anywhere. It's been two years and I still vex over not getting it.

I wouldn't count on the bike never being stolen. My housemate always gets second hand bikes, and it doesn't stop them from being stolen every two or three years.

Yeah, you're right. All of my furniture except the butcherblock table in the kitchen is second hand. My clothes are either second hand, Christmas gifts from my parents or underwear and shoes (anybody else find that once shoes are broken in to someone else's feet they never seem to get comfortable). My beater bike is probably my best recycled possession - looks like hell, so no one will ever steal it, but it's 20 pounds and rides like a dream.

Thank God for thrift shops with losing weight! Whenever I can't wear my pants because they fall down, I bag them up, donate them and find new pants there.

Well over half our house furnishings are at least second hand. The 1920's chair in my bathroom is my favorite find in years! The old piano roll cabinet that I use as my bedside table is my second favorite find.

I truly buy as much as I can second hand. The only things I really never buy second hand are: food, undergarments, hair stuff. Everything else, if at all possible, we buy from a thrift store, estate sale, vintage shop, craigslist, etc.
Nearly all my favorite clothes - including this great vintage satin baby doll top I have on right now- are second hand. And we have a beautiful old couch that we got at a flea market that we just love. But my favorite items are definitely the lamps. ALL the lamps in my house are second hand, and they are all so unique and beautiful and we love them.

Everyone knows that garage sales and thrift stores are great for the pocketbook, as well as for the environment. You're reusing a previously made product, ensuring that more resources aren't taken out of the environment to make the product from scratch, and you can get bargain prices. What pieces have you found at garage sales that you now just can't live without?
A few of mine: 70's blue vinyl chairs, submersion mixer, Italian pasta dishes, buffet hutch, bookshelves.
