Coconut oil as deodorant? That I will have to try!

It's lovely to cook with, I like the flavour when I'm frying meat or veggies. It doesn't stick or burn, is easy to use and is super duper healthy. I am excited to see how my arm pits will like it :P

I like Spectrum brand. Very reasonably priced.

I love coconut oil! I haven't been actively using it right now but it has TONS of benefits from curing the flu to weight loss and many others. I have the book "the coconut oil miracle" and you would not believe the list of illnesses it can help treat. Eating 3 TBSP a day helps boost your metabolism and promote weight loss. It isn't just the oil that does this. Eating coconut or drinking or cooking with its milk provides the same benefits. It is saturated fat but the fat is a medium chain fatty acid and metabolizes differently then regular saturated fat. It is used for energy instead of stored.

This book even has a story about a man who was literally planing his own funeral because he was dying of aids going on vacation and eating local foods (made with coconut) and returning to find that his blood count was almost untraceable of the virus. Amazing! Good read for those who love nutrition. And if you are looking into adding it to your diet.

You can stir it in a hot beverage to get your intake but ease up to the 3 tbsp. I love cooking coconut shrimp in it and then I would save some of the oil and put it on mashed potatoes. Virgin tastes better to mix in foods but refined coconut oil is better to cook with and doesn't add much coconut flavor. It can take more heat then the virgin. Still cook with lower heat though. It has a lower smoke point then vegetable oil.

There is a company called SO Delicious that makes a ton of dairy free coconut 'dairy' products... like coconut milk and ice cream. It really is delicious and beneficial. Coconut got a bad rap for years. But it truly is amazing!

It is also great for the skin and body,as others have stated. Too many good things to say them all! They started selling it at my local grocery store in the cooking Isle but I used to have to go to Whole foods.

Matthew 4: 4- Jesus answered; it is written, man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

I have been using coconut oil for quite a few months now. I first got it for one of my cats, she has skin problems. I did hear that it is a great moisturizer and i have terribly dry skin, it flakes in the winter months, and have found nothing to actually stop it. Well, I read that CO is good for eczema, so I figured why not! Well, I still use it once a week, and spot problem areas a few times weekly, and it works wonders! I am glad to hear it works as a deodarant also, since I am almost out of the salt stick. I buy cruelty free for those who wonder why I just dont use any old thing. When I worked for a vet, one of our clients told me I smelled great! Then she blushed and asked if I minded that she said that. I just laughed! I like smelling good naturally.

I've always been tempted to use Coconut oil as a moisturizer...but have worried about UV rays being "amplified" by the oil. Anyone know if this should be a concern?

I don't know about the coconut oil needing to be either refined or virgin question. Hopefully someone else will ;)

But the way you described the "oil pulling" is funny, I cannot op with coconut oil either, it made me gag and I almost threw-up. I can use other "thinner" oils, but everyone has their own threshold. I cannot put a piece of french toast in my mouth to save my life. Throw up every time. Go figure?

That is what makes us uniQue!!

I bought some organic coconut oil today! Does it matter that it isn't refined or virgin?

Also, I tried the oil pulling and lasted about 2 seconds - I found the "texture" really disgusting! Sloshing spit and oil around in my mouth first thing in the morning really grossed me out.

Good for you, on trying the coconut oil. I love to cook with it, it has a very nice sweet flavor and it has so many other benefits, but when you dig even deeper, you can see real evidence as to why this product is and has been considered healthy for a long time. www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/oi

Mind you I am no expert, but that is why Love the Internet, because you can find them. (experts)

Oil Pulling: I have used sesame seed oil for that also, I have tried several kinds of oil. This is such a cheap and easy way to enhance health, I say, Why NOT? been doing it for over a year now.

The Oil Pulling article was really interesting - I'm going to try it tomorrow morning! I've been researching candida a lot lately (because I have it), and Coconut Oil has come up many different times. It seems it has hundreds of different uses!

On Friday I had developed a cluster of 3 coldsores on my lower lip. They were what I call "past the point of no return" where I know putting prescription cold sore medication on them isn't really going to do much. (and I'm out of it anyway)

I decided to try putting my coconut oil on them, thinking maybe it would help them to heal faster. They are GONE. I went from big yellow blisters to gone by Saturday morning.

I am absolutely sold on coconut oil now, and I'm not the kind of person who jumps on things like this. I think of myself as "skeptically open-minded". I'll give something a try but not believe all the hype and pretty much need to see objective proof, either from myself or properly run scientific studies. I don't think there's anything more objective than making a big, blistered lip blister-free in 24 hours. WOW.

re. Oil Pulling - Had not heard of this. Very interesting, thanks for the link.

I don't like cooking with coconut oil and so have been using it as a moisturizer occasionally. Some in another group I'm in (not thru SP) have claimed coconut oil can lighten or remove dark moles. This is only when it is heaped on for an extended period for many consecutive days. Some people say they cover moles with a band-aid soaked in CO. I have not tried this.

This stuff is amazing and I'm ashamed to say I haven't already used up the jar I have had for quite some time!

Well, off to moisturize...

Take care,
Char

I like to use coconut oil and find it very tasty. Also, considering our skin is the largest organ of our body, we should use products that we would also eat. (not some of those creams that are full of ingredients most cannot pronounce)

You mention using coconut oil as mouthwash and doing it for 10 -15 minutes. That is called "Oil Pulling"! I have been doing that for about a year. I am going to add one of the many links you can find on the Internet regarding Oil Pulling. www.oilpulling.org/

I like it!

Since reading this thread a week ago, I bought and have been using coconut oil. So far it's working great! It's very nice as a moisturizer, but so far it's worked perfectly as a deodorant/antiperspirant. I'll still need to keep my regular unscented antiperspirant on hand though for times when I go camping/hiking in bear country. I suspect that smelling like a large, delicious nut is NOT what you want to do in bear country, lol!

I have been using coconut oil as a moisturizer as well, it helps with wrinkles. I have also read that a tablespoon of coconut oil per day helps if you have hypothyroid. I do not have this condition, but I have been putting a tablespoon a day in with my smoothie for prevention. The oils help with your thyroid function. With the stress these days, our adrenals and thyroid are getting overloaded. The coconut oil also gives your smoothie a yummy coconut taste and makes the consistency nice smooth and creamy.

Sounds wonderful! You could mix some with sugar for exfoliating while you moisturize.I've never tried it, just almond oil for moisturizing, and that really does well on dried out skin.

Hello all,
I just ate coconut oil on my toast this morning... It's wonderful. I spoke with a lady at Earth Fare and she told me to use it as a mouth wash, swish for 10-15 min. to help get rid of toxins. It melts in your mouth and taste great. Make sure and rinse your entire tongue...when done spit out and rinse(do not swallow). I also put some on my toothbrush and brush my tongue lightly. It cleans all the film off without harsh mouthwash or vigorous brushing. It may take a few times to get the full affect. I've also used it as a moisturizer. I love coconut oil!!!

I use coconut oil as a moisturizer and conditioner. I rotate it with almond and avocado oils, mainly because my hair likes different benefits.
Keep it concentrated on the ends if your hair is inclined to oiliness.
As far as using it as a moisturizer goes, no one believes I'm 40. I've gotten late 20s to 34 as guesses.
I used it as deodorant today and granted, I wasn't out and about that much, so far so good (tomorrow and my two shifts will be a good test).

Wake up every day knowing you make the decision to begin your journey anew.

This choice in this moment defines now.

What is your now?

I think it is amaazing and I get compliments on my skin all the time. I have never had a problem with clogged pores either. I havent used it as a deoderant but cant wait to try that. Thank you all so much for the information.

I use coconut oil all the time too. I haven't noticed any blocked pores either. I always use the cold-pressed oil (which is really pale in colour) instead of the boiled one.

I know when we used essential oils for massage they basically blocked pores, so you wouldn't be sweating, because the sweat couldn't get out of your body which would function like an antipersperant, but could also interfer with your bodies ability to cool down.

We did massage in association with my Jujitsu club, and a couple of times we'd do it right before practice, and practice was really uncomfortably warm.

Just wanted to let people know that I've started using pure, extra virgin coconut oil on my face, body and under my arms. On the face and body it's amazing as a moisturizer. My skin is looking amazing after only a couple days. I think is evening out the color and I've read it gets rid of age spots. You can read all about it on the web.

I also have very dry feet and I've been putting it on them and then wearing socks when I sleep. Very good. I'm happy. Love the smell and if you use very little (a little really does go a long way) it's really not greasy at all, soaks right into the skin. If you've never seen it, it's solid and white at room temp but melts right in your hand.

I also read that you can use it as a deodorant. Don't ask me how oil could work that way but this morning I gave it a try and so far so good, no sweat and no odor. I've tried a million natural deodorants and not one of them have EVER worked. I'd love to give up the chemicals so I'm hoping this works after a few days. I'll let you know.

I've also read about eating it instead of butter and cooking with it etc. but I've not tried this yet. It's supposed to be amazing for you so we'll see.

Anyway, it's on pure ingredient that would alleviate all the worry about chemicals in face and body lotions. Oh, and you can use it as conditioner too but I haven't tried that yet.
