I have heard that Rat Terriers were actually better than cats at catching mice. My American Bulldog might let me have a small dog, he doesn't seem to be bothered with them when they come around. I just don't think I want the responsibility of another family member, lol!

When we first moved in (before the cats), they were coming into the basement and nesting by and in the dryer. No food was around. My kitty has tidied up my house and two others on our street. He is a real hunter.

This is my first post in this team, and what a coincidence that this is the first thread I see.
I ordered some peppermint oil a few weeks ago to repel mice. (dreamingearth.com, I think).
I put the oil out in little bowls. They seem to avoid the areas where the bowls are, even if they used to go in that area. However, the oil seems to need to be refreshed every couple of days.
Another trick I've heard of to get rid of mice (don't know if it works) is to get a board and lean it up against a tall bucket. Put food in the bucket and a little on the board, and I guess the idea is the mice will jump in there but won't be able to get out. You can then take them far from your house and let them go in the wild.
I really wish I had a cat though because they are supposed to work like magic for mice problems. I was seriously thinking of borrowing one from someone.
I absolutely refuse to use non-humane traps or poison. So, I've been exploring alternative options for a while now.
One more tip: Make sure you don't leave dishes in the sink. Keep your kitchen spotless. I think that's why I got the mice problem in the first place. Didn't keep up with kitchen cleaning.

I usually get mine from a health store in a town near me. I love the people they are so nice! But I needed to save some money so I ordered online this time. I am not sure if I am allowed to put the website that I ordered them from but it was the best deal that I could find and the oils that I ordered stated that they were 100% pure and were from a well name essential oil maker. I will let you know how they turn out, should get them tomorrow, I hope!

Let me know how it turns out. I need to get some oils. I'm just not sure about the quality of the oils locally.

Peppermint reminds me of candy canes. emoticon
But you made me think... I could mix it with my pine scented essential oil and make a Christmas scented air freshener! Maybe call it Candy Canes & Christmas Trees lol

The weather is changing and they are starting to head inside. I never thought of peppermint and Christmas. I think of pine but peppermint is a nice energizing smell.

I am glad that it is working.

Day 13 of the experiment. There is still absolutely no evidence of mice in the two cabinets that I cleaned and sprayed with peppermint. It still smells pepperminty (is that a word?? ) I guess I will wait a couple more days before I refresh them. BUT...I just saw a mouse run across my living room! I spilled my coffee all over the floor when I screamed, jumped and ran! lol I cleaned it up using my peppermint scented cleaner. I guess it is time to start at one end of the trailer and work my way to the other end with peppermint. Guess my house will smell like Christmas early this year! But it seems to work in the two cabinets so I will do anything to keep those nasty little creatures out of my home!!!

My Aunt and I were just discussing my 'experiment' and she was saying that maybe I should have tried one item at a time because now we really don't know if it is just one of the items that works or if it has to be a combination of the three or what... emoticon

This is a great idea! I live on a farm too and although I haven't had the problem of getting mice in my house (I have a cat) I do get them sometimes in my outbuildings. I think I'll try this.

How much peppermint oil do you use in your spray?

I make my own cleaners and linen sprays. Not sure how often you have to replace the cotton balls, I am thinking I will have to freshen the cotton balls about once a week or so. I will let you know if that is often enough as soon as I find out. I used 100% peppermint essential oil in my cleaner, the linen spray and the cotton balls. I got the essential oils at my local (30 miles away) health store.

Thanks for the update!

What is the brand of the spray that you used?

Where did you purchase it?

I wonder how often you have to "freshen" the cotton balls?

wanted to update on my mouse / peppermint oil experiment...
I thoroughly cleaned 2 cabinets with peppermint scented all purpose cleaner, then sprayed it with peppermint linen spray, then stuck peppermint scented cotton balls in corners.
On other 2 cabinets (which are right next to the 2 that I cleaned) I only swept away the evidence of mice. This is day 3 and each morning when I check there is absolutely no evidence of mice in the 2 cabines w/ peppermint scent and there is evidence of a mouse where I didn't put anything.
I do find it strange though that the cabinets are connecting and the mouse doesn't appear to be crossing some invisible line. I guess you would have to have more than just the cotton balls since it would seem that the mice could smell them from the other 2 cabinets.
Anyway, thought it was interesting and wanted to share.

Along the same lines as that if you do a lavender infusion (in water) and let the cup sit in your window sill it helps keeps any bugs from coming in

I love adding essential oils to my cleaners! My favorites are the peppermint and the citrus scents. Suprisingly my biggest seller is the Eucalyptus... which I can't stand.

I don't have a mouse problem because I have a mighty hunter kitty who has moved out all of the mice and now brings me trash and dead leaves.

I hadn't thought about adding peppermint oil to my cleaners. I love the smell. It is such an energizer.

I have to say I agree with SARAHGMD, I have four furballs and the neighborhood has significantly fewer rats since we moved in. My next-door neighbor actually came over to thank me shortly after we moved in as my cats had cleaned out the nest of rats living under her back decking. I feel like renting them out! I do know that our house had mice before we moved in (we found evidence in the pre-sale inspection) but I've never seen a one and we've been in the house for seven years now.

Too bad you can't use them, they are a great problem solver in the rodent dept. Good luck with the peppermint! Do let us know how it works!

Unfortunately, my American Bulldog mix HATES cats, so cats are not an option for me. I have been using essential oils in my all natural products for over a year now and have not had any allergic reactions so far. In fact, my son has had eczema since he was a baby and since I switched to all natural products it has cleared up tremendously!
Anyway... I will keep you posted on how my peppermint oil experiment works! emoticon

Peppermint oil will be a pleasant smell too if it works. Some folks are alergic, so it might be something to think about.

Personaly I find having a cat around works great. It doesn't even have to be mouser, the smell just scares them off. I live in a duplex, and a couple of years ago, before we had cats, the other siders with cats moved out and suddenly we had mice. They disapeared when the cats moved in.

I was just reading about it yesterday and was all set to order til I read that it smells like a skunk around your house! emoticon Glad it doesn't work! lol My plan today is as soon as I get back from the hospital (one of my best friends just became a grandmother!!) I am going to clean out all of my cabinets using my peppermint scented cleaners, then spray them down with a peppermint scented room spray, and finally place cotton balls dipped in peppermint oil all around. So maybe I will help repel mice and get a workout while I am at it!! emoticon

I have tried Fox Urine - doesn't work.

Haven't tried Peppermint oil but let us know if it works! We couldn't put down enough traps (gross) We had to eventually use poison in our attic. The problem got so out of control that it sounded like a herd of Buffalo up there at night - they were eating our wiring and air conditioning ducts (cost a small fortune to replace!)

I have been doing quite a bit of research on keeping mice out of my house (I live in the country). I only use all natural cleaners in my house and one of my favorite way to scent them is with Peppermint Essential Oil. From talking with my neighbors, I seem to not have quite the problem they do and I see that peppermint is recommended to repel mice. My question is this... Has anyone else tried this? Do you think it really works?
