Wow....I'm so glad I visited this forum. I feel like the worst wife alive b/c I loathe sex and it has nothing at all to do with my husband. Has anyone had a decreased libido with Nuva Ring though? I don't take pills b/c I forget to take them, so I just use Nuva Ring since I only have to take care of it once a month.

Has anyone who said they were going to try the calcium and magnesium done so and had results?

Yasmin absolutely killed my libido. I'm much better on my current pill(Dianette), though still slightly reduced from my non-pill norm. I'm happy with the way it is, since I can be slightly crazy when not on the pill.

It is so nice to hear from other folks with similar issues. I lost my libido too. Haven't seen in it a few years. For me I think there are multiple contributing factors but I do think they are primarily driven by hormones. I was diagnosed officially with PCOS last year (10 years after a subtotal hysterectom - I have one ovary left). I am kind of the opposite of the typical PCOS patient. I have very little body hair and no acne problems. I do have the typical weight gain in the abdomen and high cholesterol. At diagnosis my DHEA level was more than 3x the top normal range. OVer the course of a year he has managed to normalize not only my cholesterol but also my DHEA and other hormones. Since I have "regulated" I have become psycho-Witch for one week every month with absolutely no desire to "get busy". Frankly I would rather sleep or watch TV or read a book. My try the tea with ginseng and see if that helps. I am already on so many pills don't really want to add any more to the mix.

Laugh some everyday.

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I think the lack of desire is BCP related, although the last time I went off the pill I suffered SERIOUS consequences (ie: no period for three months, and then a three-month long HEAVY period -so heavy, I thought I way dying and I checked myself into emergency). I'm going to give that calcium/magnesium supplement a try.

Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early 20's and have been taking Diane birthcontrol until now, at 40. I suffered from excessive hair growth & acne but after about a year of taking BC and a few sessions of laser treatment around my chin area, until that day, I have very little hair growth, almost no acne and it didn't affect my weight or my menstration which has been normal all these years. Only for the last 2years has my libido been non existant and I'm going to see a Specialist about that too.
Like soo many of us my weight has fluctuated but from when I was first diagnosed and at 220pnds I have steadily kept most of the weight off up until my accident 2yrs ago. Now I'm here and need to lose about 30pnds. Everyone is different. If there was a simple solution, we wouldn't be here. Please keep the faith and remember that we all need to find what works best and that we're not freaks of nature ... it could always be worse . sending luv emoticon

I know everyone has said it's the BCP, but I'm not positive that that's necessarily it. When I first got married, I was on Actos and Sprionolactone. They made my periods more regular, but I had absolutely no sex drive (which came in handy when I was trying to make it to wedding night without sex). One of my doctors said that the spironolactone stops hormone development before it gets to the male hormone stage, which helps with the PCOS stuff, but also means you just have less hormones of any kind floating around. When I went on birth control, I got a little bit of a sex drive, though nothing major. When I got pregnant though, I was nuts. My husband loved it, but sometimes I was so horny it was like torture.

After my daughter was born, my sex drive tapered off (I had an episiotomy, so that whole area was tender for a long time and I still get irritation around the scar). When I went back on low-dose BCP (ones that didn't interfere with breast-feeding), I found that I just ended up having a little period every two weeks, which doesn't help with the sex life. I tried Depo. It was even worse. I bled for a whole month. Not heavy, but enough that we weren't doing anything. I was doing a little better with the next BCP, but when I started back up with metformin and spironolactone in June, it went back to extra periods. So now I'm on another BCP and that one worked okay the first month or so, but I'm having another extra period. We're wanting to try for another baby in a couple months, so I'm probably just going to stop even bothering after I finish this month's. But then I'm worried that I'll go back to being totally dead in that area, like I was before I went on any BCP. My husband already complains and I even have a sex drive right now (though I will say that it's not helpful when I'm usually only horny on my period).

I've been taking those Calcium and Vitamin D chewable things, since I know that liquid and chewable vitamins are more easily absorbed by your body. Has anyone else had luck with the Calcium and Magnesium thing? Because I will seriously consider switching back to pills if I know it'll make me want my husband more.

So, if you were told that you need to have laser for the rest of your life, and it is more expensive than waxing, what is the benefit of having laser?

I've been told a few things:
1. It will take longer to be effective because of the hormonal factor.
2. It won't do any good at all, because the T will just find other hair follicles to grow (Fine so long as they aren't on my face!!)
3. It can actually make the situation worse because the laser can stimulate dormant follicles into growing (as they use it for balding men etc).

It's really hard to know what to believe.

I have no idea how many treatments there has been. It's been too many!!!! I tried to do it every two months depending on how I was doing money wise. I remember about 2 years ago there were a lot of things going on in life and I think like 6 months passed by until I was able to get treatment, and it was horrible!!!! Every place I've been to have said that because of my hormone problem I'd need to get laser the rest of my life, I'm not like their typical patient that is done after six or eight treatments. I've been to a lot of places trying to get the best laser, trying to find the best price, and I've asked all kinds of questions and they have all said the same thing- laser forever!!!!! So, what else am I to do? This has been the only thing that has helped. I just read about the Saw Palmetto so I'm gonna start taking that.

It's rather scary the whole beard-growing symptom. It freaks me out on occasion. There are definitely differences between the laser machines. I've found the GentleLASE one to be best - most effective and least painful.

At the moment I'm using an Epilator type device under my chin every few weeks, which keeps things under control now I'm taking Vitex, Saw Palmetto and D Chiro Inositol.

5 years? That seems like a long time. I know hormonal hair growth such as this is a completely difference kettle of fish, but how many treatments do you think you've had in that time?

I've had laser done just on my face. I've been doing it for about 5 years now. I was getting it done at the same place for most of that time but with the economy problems they closed down, and I just started going to this new place but I am kinda nervous because they use a different laser and I don't think I'm getting the same results. I am freaking out because I have these really thick hairs on my face now and I have to shave constantly, so I just have to be patient and see what happens.

Ice is a good idea ...

I've had laser done *everywhere* and in some places I found it extremely painful. I was paying per 5 minutes, so it was uneconomical for me to be squirming and wriggling all the time :) The numbing cream is called Emla - you can buy it at pharmacies (you need to ask) but it's quite expensive. I think there is a generic version though?

How have you found the laser on your face to work? I found it made my skin lovely and smooth and hair free after the fried hairs fell out, but several years later I think the hair is just as bad as it ever was. I suppose I just have to stick with it until all the hair follicles are gone and there's nothing left to respond to my high Testosterone levels. I haven't got the money to do it at the moment unfortunately.

=o) that's funny. Well, I've never ever had any alcohol in my entire life (I'm 27), but I can imagine how that would work. I do laser treatments on my face, and it's not really that bad,it is uncomfortable but it's not really painful, but this is a new place I started visiting recently. My old place use to provide numbing cream, so that was good. Anyway, any advice or tip works for me, so thanks.

I'm going to try to do the ice before waxing though, i've never done it so I'm gonna give it shot.

I shouldn't really advise this - the carbohydrate content in alcohol does me in particular and anyone with Insulin Resistance the world of no good ... but when I had laser hair removal I used to take a little drink bottle with a couple of shots of baileys in milk with me to the appointment and scoff it just before I went in. I'm a terribly cheap drunk as I drink so very rarely so it REALLY took the edge off :)

Just an idea. I don't mean to be bad. What about ice packs? numb the skin first. Or take a couple of painkillers before you go in.

BELROSA- you're right. I have done waxing in the past and it really does help but I haven't done it in a while so I'm just trying to get the guts to get through it the first couple of times because it hurt like crazy!!!

Melon is absolutely right about BCPs ...

They really can do us the world of no good. I've never been on them myself, always used Natural Family Planning or barrier methods.

There's more info on the science behind why BCPs can be bad for women with PCOS here: mypcos.info/1/treatments/pharmaceuti

Indi, Have you thought about waxing? You only have to do it once every month to six weeks and it doesn't really hurt that much after the first couple of times.

I guess I've never really had a problem with it. I'm usually in the mood... with my high sex drive, I really thought I thought like a guy.. and I have pretty much blamed it on my PCOS with having higher androgens than regular women and all that. My doctor did put me on the pill about two years ago, and I did notice a big change, but after a few months everything went back to "normal." I was taken off the pill last year and got an IUD, and I still have a high sex drive. Even though I love my guy and I want him all the time... I usually don't start things or avoid him because of all my weight and hair issues. I know he doesn't care about the way I look, he loves me, but I know it's an issue I have to deal with. I don't want him to touch me when I know I don't have nice smooth skin, like a "normal" girl. This whole hair situation is killing me! He was just "complaining" this morning about me not giving him any for about week now... I do shave, of course, but it takes me about an hour, and my skin gets so irritated that I have to wait over a week to be able to shave again without feeling like my skin is on fire! And when I do get to shave I only enjoy one day's worth of smooth skin, because the next day the hair is there again! Well, sorry to get off the subject a little.. I'm just so frustrated!
Anyway, all this to say... that sometimes it's just a psychological thing.

I used to have a great wonderful ravenous libido. Nowadays I practically have to give myself a pep talk to get motivated. And...sorry for Tmi but "the girls" used to love all and any attention they got but now it's like they're deaf/blind/and mute. No response.

My poor husband has joked that I could keep reading and he could get busy while I'm reading.

I just feel so dull sexually.

I'm on yaz, spiro and metformin. SIGH.

It's nice to know I'm not alone in my struggles.. I started having thyroid problems around the time I got married (over 4 years ago), and things haven't been right since. Things have just gone downhill from there - I never want it, ever, and I love my husband dearly! I want to want to!

I've read everyone's responses, and I'm thinking it may be hormonal - I'm on thyroid medication, birth control, and spironolactone.

I may be calling my Dr to see if I can go off the birth control.. but what about my spironolactone? My endocronologist says that I need to be off birth control for 6 months in case I get pregnant, but my obgyn says as long as I come off of it when my first pregnancy test comes back positive, I'm ok..

Oh my god, I'm SO relieved! I thought it was me for the longest time and it even made me question my relationship. It's definitely put a huge strain on things, anyway.
For me, it started when I was put on anti-depressants and I was blaming those for the longest time. However, I've been off of those for about 3 years now.
I think it's a combination of all the hormonal manipulation (BCP, antidepressants, etc) and the emotional toll it takes for being "fat and hairy" that took my libido away.
Does this calcium/magnesium thing work? I'm willing to give almost anything a shot right about now!

Get off of Birth control!! I know this sounds crazy, but it is doing nothing to take care of the PCOS. BCP just put a band aid on the problem.

I started Natural Family Planning 3 months ago and I have found more answers all ready about my cycle, about my issues. I am still on metformin to control the insulin resistance and my dr. is putting me on a NATURAL progestrone. That is the hormone you are missing as a PCOS person. The BCPs fill you with both estrogene and progestrone which causes all the problems of libido, moods, and depression. If you use a natural progestrone it will work with your body better and it is causing your body to mensturate. BCPs shut down your ovaries so therefore your body is not mensturating.

When I was on birth control I had no libido, I was seriosuly depressed, I scared my husband on several occasions because of this depression. Not only that, but I started having other odd side effects. There have been so many women that have had strokes and even death from BCPs. Even if your doctor tells you BCPs are the only answer he/she is wrong. Trust me, I was told the same thing and then I found Natural Family Planning. Please look into it!! It's worth it!

I had a HUGE drive before going on the pill just before my wedding in 2007. However, the pills killed my drive. I've been off of them now for 14 months due to TTC, bad side effects, and 60lbs. of weight gain. They were just trash for my body. Anyways, now I find out that I have PCOS after a year of not getting pregnant. But even after a year of being off the pills, my libido STILL hasn't come back! What do I do??!

Ready to loose the baby weight!

Like many of you, I'm in the same boat. On the pill, no sex drive. I think a lot of it is the feeling fat and hairy business, but I wonder if there isn't a physical component. I dearly love my SO but I'd just rather sleep, thanks. Might have to try the calcium and magnesium...

Back to SP to lose 30+ pounds so I can try for a baby! Ready to get fit and healthy and stay that way this time.

So glad I found this. I had suspected bcp is what killed mine. Went off of them earlier this year, finally had normal cycles (taking met 3x/day) for the first time in 15 yrs. Libido came back with a vengeance, thought I was back in HS, lol. Needed some type of bc so went back on 2 months ago, acne back, 10lbs and libido GONE. Getting tubes tied in February, lol.

As bad as it sounds for me to say this... I'm glad that I'm not alone! I thought it was just me who had this issue!

I've been dealing with this for MANY years now and I'm fairly young (26). My hubby gets so frustrated with me and he thinks that there's something wrong with him.

For me I think it's purely hormonal, not psychological. I just wish I could fix it and get things back to 'normal'. I never have the desire, even though I love my husband deeply. It makes me sad that I can't feel normal at times.

My libido went down hill when I had my daughter and stayed that way up until 4 years ago. Now I can't get enough!! I haven't been on bpc since I was 21 due to me and hubby trying to get pregnant. I think it's from the Green Tea with Ginseng and honey that I've been drinking. It's the only thing that can explain my enhanced libido that I can think of.

I was just diagnosed with PCOS yesterday... I have to say that my libido is in hyper drive. I always want it...I am talking ALWAYS!!! I think I think about it more than most men! When I was reading up on PCOS it said that the androgen hormones are higher in women with PCOS so I took that as an answer why my libido was so hyper active. After reading ya'lls posts though I am not so sure. I did just start on the pill YAZ so if my libido decreases I will know that has something to do with it. I also start on Metformin next week so who knows what my body is fixin to go through but I will let ya'll know what happens? I am a little nervous about it all. But we shall see. Good luck ladies!

If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results.

I started taking Yasmin in Sept and ever since then I need a lot of extra help. My gyno prescribed my Yas because it is a lower dose but I am only starting it this month.

I'm hoping it will get better.

I am so glad someone else out there is feeling that they have lost their libido because I was beginning to wonder what had happened to me. On top of this I recently had surgery for endomitriosis and now every time i do have a happy ending it comes with terrible cramping afterwards. I am going to try the calcium and magnesium... any hope or ideas would be great

How long until the Calcium and Magnesium thing kicked in? My OH is beginning to get paranoid that I'm having an affair; we live in different cities, and only see each other every second or third weekend, and though I love him madly, I just don't feel like it. We've got three weeks until our third anniversary, and I'd love to surprise him next weekend with a hunger for him!

I beleive that it's 500 mg. You can find very basic Calcium and Magnesium vitamins in the store, they come together as apparently it's easier for you to absorb the calcium when its with the Mag.

Someone told me that she was taking elemental magnesium (which she can only get online) to help with depression and she beleives its a wonder drug.

I'm just happy that my sex drive is back. So is my husband. :)

I actually find that mine comes in a little pill called Calcium and Magnesium. Seriously, I start taking it regularly, and my husband is ohhh so yummy looking. Well, most men on TV are also very yummy, which makes my husband yummier because he's easier to convince to have sex with me than say, Appolo from Battlestar Gallactica. Mmmmmmm....

low libido is listed a symptom of Cushings Syndrome which is apparently frequently mis-diagnosed as PCOS. see other discussion on Cushings Syndrome.

not saying you all have the other syndrome... do know that my S.O. was pretty damn excited to see low libido in the symptoms for Cushings syndrome. "finally," he says, "you might get some treatment for THAT."

just for what it's worth.

I plan to stop my BCP next week after finishing this pack. I can only hope (for my sake as well as my husband's) that my libido returns.

My OB/GYN told me it was due to the BCP. I had to stop taking them due to high risk of stroke. Within 2 months of stopping them my libido was back in full force. It was like being in my early twenties again.

I used to have a very high libido despite feeling fat and hairy but mine has been practically nonexistent seance I started taking Yasmin in June so I'm fairly certain that for me it's hormonal.

Small steps will get me there.

I think for me it's psychological because I feel fat and hairy. :(

I'm not sure if it PCOS related, medication related, or psychologically related, but many women with PCOS report a lack of libido. Personally, I know that one of the major factors for my lack of libido is psychological.

One thing you might talk to your OB/GYN about is being prescribed a testosterone cream. It's applied, a few times a week, to the skin "down there". It's not a major dose of testosterone, but it can be enough to help put you in the mood a little more often.

Hope that helps!

-MK

My drive is gone, too. I think most of it is weight related. However, when I do get a "happy ending", I want more for the next day or two. But after those pass with no love, I NEVER want it.

The best inspiration is not to outdo others, but to outdo ourselves.

mine takes a hike everytime i am put on birth control. there was one pill called ovacon that made me feel like beating the mess out of the BF whenever he tried to touch me. even a hug put me on edge. needless to say that one was short lived. i felt so mean... so if i sike myself up then i can get into the mood... but usually he makes his way round the bases and in the end we all win... emoticon

The Depo shot killed mine. Maybe they're off on vacation together! One we get started - or more accurately, once he starts things - I enjoy it as usual, but I just don't seek it out or miss it if its been a while.

I'm looking into ginseng supplements, to try to bring back some of my oomph.

I can't find mine either. :D I need a good running start in the morning to be in mood for the night, and usually by then I'm zonked out when DH wants sex.

I've been through several different kinds of pills, and I've fond that my libido responded differently to each of them. I would suggest you call your doctor and see if a different form of pills may be better.

It will be alright in the end. If its not alright, then its not the end.

no idea, but I do know that until my hyster i has no sexual interest what so ever ... after my hyster lets say can't wait for the all clear cause my body is screaming at me!!

Best I can say is maybe what you have been on needs ajustment, that or its just a phase that your body is going though and it will turn around in time.

If you are under a lot of stress that can also interfear with ones drive apparently, as can a number of other factors that have nothing to do with the pill or other hrt deals.

Best bet is to talk with your medical professionals and see what they have to say about this change.

I've been taking the pill for almost a decade now - always low-dose and always closely monitored by a doctor. But recently, I've lost all want for intimacy. Don't get me wrong: I like to cuddle and kiss as much as the next gal, but anything past that, and I pretty much have to be drunk.

I think it's related to the pill, but I need it for period regulation. Any ideas?!? Please?!? I think my fiancÚ is a little tired of vodka night...
