i started yaz 1 month ago when i got my dx of pcos. guess i am not impressed, have had spotting and my period was not just 4 days. i don't know what to think yet though. hoping to just take it for a few months to get my body back into a rhythm. i wanted to be regular, so far that is not what i have gotten. but it has just been 1 month.

Keep on keeping on!

I have regular periods every month they come every 28 days and my ob/gyn didnt test me just said that I look like i have pcos (bc im overweight) so he said the only thing i can do is lose weight and take bcp. He prescribed loestrin for me but I dont want to take it. I dont know if im ovulating or not but I do have regular periods that dont bother me too much.

Will loestrin help with the weight gain, insulin resisitance, hair thinning on head, hair growth on face (which is minimal but worries me)? Please give me some advice. I thought Diane bcp was good for PCOS

I know we all react differently to different BC, but YAZ has been wonderful for me. I've been on it 3 months & i've actually lost a little weight. Menstraul cramps are very mild (they were excrutiating before BC)and I just feel better. The only down side is I had breakthrough bleeding the first 20 days with cramps, and I was VERY uncontrollably emotional and weepy for the 1st month. (usually crying over "happy" emotional things; just so weird) The biggest plus is I've experienced NO bloating at all during my cycles.

NEKA79, I've had the Mirena, which is similar to an IUD, for about 5 years. I haven't had any problems with it. It did stop my menstruation. I haven't had a period for at least 2 years and I certainly don't mind that. I have no intentions of having any more kids since I was diagnosed with pregnancy induced cardiomyopathy with my daughter 6 years ago. It has also been very cost efficient. I paid a copay when it was inserted and now don't have to worry about monthly copays for BCPs. I have been pleased. Actually, I'm scheduled to have it replaced within the next couple of weeks.

I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I've taken Yaz for two months and have noticed very little negative side effects. My big complaint is that I bled for the first 36 days (not always heavy, sometimes just spotting) I was on it. After that though, I've been fine. I've had no nausea, or weight gain though.

Hey Michlow -

I was diagnosed with PCOS about a year and a half ago, but I had been on the pill since I was 14 or 15 for period regulation. In all actuality, most women don't *have* to have periods. When BC was first released, there were no fiber pills so that you would have that break for your period. There were just back to back doses, but women thought that not having a period was unnatural - thus, the break.

My doctor told me that most women with PCOS who have menstration problems take the pill to ensure that they continue to ovulate, which in my case was exactly what I needed: without the pill, I couldn't ovulate regularly. So, I am on a closely-monitored low-dose regiment to protect my fertility. On the other hand, my doctor also told me that when I lose weight, my periods should regulate themselves so that I won't have to take the pill anymore.

Note: I am not advocating that anyone use the pill on a regiment, as I have, without a doctor's observation. If not monitored, it can be dangerous to your health. ALWAYS ask your doctor. And, find a doctor who believes that PCOS exists and is a treatable condition. There are still doctors who think that PCOS is a made up condition and can't be treated.

I hope this helps. Don't be afraid of BC - research your options. This will enable you to go into a doctor's office and tell him/her exactly what you're looking for in the pill. And ask as many questions as you can - it's not worth it to be unsure when it's your health.

Hey Olivia -

I've been taking Yaz for two months now, and I'm seeing the same things that you are: weight fructuations, odd cramps, etc. My doctor told me that it could take a few months for my weight to stabilize but to KEEP EXERCISING! Though you can't tell right now, your metabolism will be speeding up since you're treating yourself right, and when your weight does stabilize, it will be much easier to lose!

My ob/gyn switched me from LoEstrin24 (The ONLY BC pill I could tolerate without continual nausea/vomiting) to Yaz and I'm happy to say it's been working great.

Periods started rather light, but on my third month they've gotten to be decent again with minimal cramps.

Now, I'm no stranger to cramps, I used to get the so badly that I could only take hydrocodone to handle the pain. The cramps I'm getting from taking Yaz just feel...weird. Though - I'll take weird cramps over agonizingly, debilitating cramps anyday, lol

Both my doc and ob/gyn said I could lose weight faster w/ Yaz, but I haven't seen any signs of that. If anything, it seems I've been fluctuating between losing and gaining twenty pounds! :(

Looking at earlier post, I wouldn't necessarily worry about the Yasmin; only the Yaz. I hope you do really well with it.

I just got my yasmine prescription today and just picked it up.. you guys are scaring me! My endocrinologist recommended it because it has the spironolactone in it. I'm wanting to start it because I'll be studying abroad and don't want to deal with super heavy menses while I'm off on weekend trips needing to go to the bathroom every 30-45 minutes for the first 3 days. eek.

Yasmin has 3mg drospirenone and 0.03mg ethinyl estradiol which is a unique combo for BC. Yaz actually has the same thing except a lower ratio of estradiol(0.02mg) which I am assuming is causing me to gain weight. Here is the Yasmin website for those who are interested:

Yes, BCPs are usually recommended for inducing your cycle. I'm not sure are not so don't take my complete word for it, but your dr may want you on BCPs because women need to have at least 4 periods a yr/1 every quarter (3 months). There may be some other reason for the BCPs as well, but I only know about them for menstruals.

I was just diagnosed with PCOS a few weeks ago. I have never used the BCP, and told my doctor that I would really prefer not to. She didn't seem to think it was a big issue.

But I have had about 3 periods a year since I started menstruating 19 years ago.

Is it mainly prescribed for those who don't bleed at all?

I completely understand bout taking pills. I don't have a period at all if I am not on BCP. And not really planning to have kids. But my GYN said I need to have a period so I guess I will keeping taking it. I will keep you guys updated on how things go. And keep me updated as well. Thanks for the encouragement emoticon

I completely understand what you mean about taking so many pills; it seems like everything should be wrapped up in one pill for PCOS patients...at least that would be nice. Have you looked up forums for women with comments about IUD to see their short and long term reactions?

Neka, yes the libido is a must have! LOL

I just don't like taking so many pills and since I have no reason to take them for birth control it seems like over kill. I'd like to find another way to lessen the bleeding without the hormones but the IUD scares me but I may go that way soon. I'll be 45 this summer and to keep taking BCP's to just control bleeding with all the side affects like blood clots and stuff just seems risky.

Hi, actually, I'm doing well with Met, but I'm far from "regular"....BCP made me bloated, gain weight, , crampy, break through bleeding, ocular migrains, huge boobs..BAD pms..the list could probably go on..lol..lets just say..NASTY for me. Since on the Met, I get a cycle about every 4 months..but feel normal now. Good luck.

Right now my dr has me on orhto-tri-cyclen-lo but it gives me nausea, cramping and headaches, but maybe that's just because I just started. I have to confess I stopped because of the symptoms and then my period came a couple of days later. Maybe I should stick to them a little longer and see how that works out.

HAILEYBOO it is good to hear that Yaz is working for someone. I'm definitely going to talk to my doctor I scheduling an appt for later this month.

BUTTERFLY I would love for you to keep me posted. Sorry about the pimples, I never really had them unless my period was coming, but even then it was just 1-3 at the most. However, I have alot of the other symptoms; especially the hirsutism so I just had my 1st session of electrolysis.

SCO0BY74 please keep me posted on how you're doing with orhto-tri-cyclen-lo...I hope you have great success with it.

I took Yasmine for 3 months. I loved that my periods were lighter but I HATED that I lost my labido (so did my DH.. LOL) So I went off it and was off for maybe 6-8 months and by then my periods were super heavy again so now I'm on Loestrin and so far so good. My periods are really really light and still want DH. I really don't like taking them, I had my tubes tied after baby #3 before I was diagnosed with PCOS so I don't NEED it for birth control.

i am on YAZ right now it works wonderfully for me. it looks like so far i might be the only one it works for. i was put on it last year by my OB after i had a DNC. so far both my regualr DR and the OB have said that Yaz is good for those with PCOS. i was on ortho tri cyclene for a couple of months and i felt nasty, and on top of that i bled the whole time i was on it.

again things work differently for different people. so if taking it worries you talk to your DR and see what they say about it....

I am having hormone testing done as we "speak". I came off about two months ago and had to give my body a month without hormones so that I could have a good base to work from. I have also stopped taking metformin for the time being and we will see what happens with that. I am working with a fabulouse HCP who wants to work with me in conquering these symptoms.

I will keep you posted on my results. I will say though that some of the pimples are back - yuck.

No I haven't managed to lose it yet but it's only been a month. I am flabbergasted by the weight to be honest and really upset that it seems others are suffering the same way. But now we know and education is better than not knowing and having to deal with it in another year. It's hard work to get it off but I am sure we can do it.

I took Yasmin for about 4 years which was recommended as a good bc for pcos. I loved it, but my doctor switched me to Yaz as a lower estrogen choice. Since February I have gained 20 lbs. My skin has cleared a little, but thats it. I have a friend who does NOT have PCOS and Yaz worked great for her, but I am going to try to get off it this week.

My acne got better too but my weight gain was worse. That might be the reason why I put so much on this time. I never realized that it had that impact - thanks for the information. I stopped taking it after 6 months. I did not like it made me much moodier.

I've been reading "Positive Options for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)" written by therapeutic author and Adam Balen, M.D. of reproductive medicine. Anyway, the authors state that Yaz worsens insulin resistance, weight gain, high BP, blood clots and several other side effects.

Has anyone experienced the above, and if so please share? Do other BC pills have the same side effects? I just don't want to start taking anything that will worsen my condition or anyone's for that matter.
