Hi ladies,

Thanks for all your input! I finally spoke to my doctor. Since I am on the regular, not extended release, he suggests that I take 500mg in the morning and once I start building up to 750 and eventually 1000 mg, he would like me to take those with dinner. thanks again. I see everyone is on different dossages and times of day as well, I guess every doctor is different in how he prescribes it! Take Care.

when i was taking the regular, i took it twice a day. now i take the extended release all at one time... unless i don't feel like swallowing 4 pills, then i'll break it up.

As a nurse, and someone on metformin for PCOS, it is best to take it more than once a day if your total daily dose is more than 250mg. Keep in mind any other medications you may be taking (so have a chat with your pharmacist) as they can have combining or contraindicating effects.

I am currently on 500mg three times a day, and I take it at breakfast, lunch and supper - or whatever my meals tend to be on shiftwork :)

Lost 65lbs in 15 months to get healthy and in top shape to try to get pregnant, and succeeded! Had our first baby in February 2013!

I only gained 32lbs in my pregnancy (and immediately lost half within a few weeks of his birth). April 1st is my full restart date.

Yes, my sister is on the extended release, and she takes her all with dinner. I take the regular and I take 1/2 at breakfast (500), 1/2 at lunch (500) and a whole pill at dinner (1000).

Thank you! I have a call in to my doctor just to be sure. The directions on my pill bottle say to take one tablet by mouth twice daily. But I know I had to build up the the proper dose because of stomach issues. Doesnt mention anything about being slow release, etc.

Though I am not on Metformin (yet), I think it depends if your pills are extended release. If it's extended release then you should be able to take it all at once, but if it's not, then maybe taking them at different times might be beneficial.

Call your doctor or pharmacist to be sure though!

Good morning everyone,

So I started taking Metformin on December 26. 250mg with breakfast, I am working myself up to 1000mg per day. I am now on 500 mg per day, which I take with breakfast. My question is, should I take the first 250mg with breakfast and then the other 1/2 with another meal during the day.. OR can I take all 500 mg at one time. I guess I could call my doctor to verify, but want to know what others did when they first started.

Thanks!!!

Sabrina
