The size of my ponytail in high school was almost 1.5" across. Now it's a little over 3/4". I lose a lot of hair daily in washing, brushing.

HOWEVER:

As my diet has improved and I've lost the weight, I'm happy to say that I am growing a set of bangs under my bangs! Like new little soft baby hairs. I noticed them at Christmas time, half an inch long. Now about 2 inches long! So I think improving diet and losing the weight (which decreases ALL of the PCOS severity and symptoms) can help!!

Lost 65lbs in 15 months to get healthy and in top shape to try to get pregnant, and succeeded! Had our first baby in February 2013!

I only gained 32lbs in my pregnancy (and immediately lost half within a few weeks of his birth). April 1st is my full restart date.

My hair was coming out a lot more than I wanted it too for about a year, and I could not figure out why. I tried everything to keep it from coming out, and even saved it in plastic bags to take to the doctor to show how much.

Flash forward about a year-- I am pretty sure it had everything to do with having Cysts in my ovaries, which I had drilling done on. As soon as he released all the fluid filled sacs, my hair stopped falling out. If this is a major issue, you might go see your OB GYN and get an ultrasound done to see if you have a cyst build up.

I had this problem but a friend who also had this problem told me what her Dr recommended: 160 mg of saw palmetto (yes, that supplement for men's prostrate problems) and 50 mg of zinc a day. She saw results within a month of starting. It took me probably 4 months. I was losing handfuls of hair with every shower and now I am hardly losing any and my head of hair feels normal to me again. I hope any of you who try it find similar results. You might want to run it by your drs to be sure before you start it.

Thank you so much for starting this thread and for all of the amazing ladies who have replied.
I started noticing that my hair was falling out about a year ago. I thought it was from the antidepressant I was taking at the time, so I stopped talking it, but it's been a year and my hair is still falling out. I can't run my fingers through it without losing a few strands.

I really thought for the longest time that I was just going crazy.

NEELIXNKES, my hair has been doing the same thing! I was growing it out recently for donation as well. It's grown to quite a nice length, but the density, well it has thinned a lot. I run my hand through my hair, I rearrange my updo/ponytail, heaven forbid I brush it! When I brush I end up wearing a hair shirt, and then I wonder if I were an early christian what I would be atoning for and then I realize "Wow, I have hair loss *and* I'm a nerd!" Okay, so maybe I'm exaggerating a little tiny bit, maybe I'd only have hair lapels, but still it's sad. I will probably cut it soon. Less weight sounds like it helps. Also I'll check my vitamins to make sure they include what I need.

The fun never ends, huh? emoticon

I've noticed that I have been losing more hair. It was much worse when I had tried to grow my hair out to donate and the loss has calmed down a bit since I have cut it but my hair is definitely thinner overall. I've been working really hard on making sure that I get plenty of vitamins and am working on getting back to nutrient dense food. It sure is one of the worst of the symptoms of this disorder.

I just noticed 3 weeks ago that when I straightened my hair it was really flat on my head which wasn't normal. I have naturally wavy, medium thickness hair and now all of a sudden it's really thin. Clumps and clumps just fall out when I take a shower. I'm noticing my hairline in the front has gotten very thin and I'm worried other will notice as well. I will definitely try the Biotin. Hopefully it helps.

Also, someone mentioned that losing weight will help. I've lost 50 pounds and weigh 174 right now. I lost 30 of my pounds in the last 4 months. I'm not sure if it could be that I lost the weight too quickly or if it was stress that caused the hair to start falling out. I haven't been stressed out for quite some time and my weight is now slowly coming off. I think my hormones are really out of whack right now and I'm hoping I don't continue to keep losing my hair.

Same problem over here emoticon It used to be a whole lot worse. I also have very curly hair, it's really thick, well... it was really thick. emoticon But anyway, I always used to wear my hair in a ponytail, so I had to stop doing that. I got the Japanese Hair Straighter Treatment. So now it's really straight and have bangs to the side. The part was very wide, but at least it hid the baldness. It has grown out some. With the Japanese Hair straightener, it is really healthy. I am also using Nioxin Shampoo and products, and have taken Biotin. With my hair bangs to the side, you can't really tell. If you are not looking too closely that is. I also haven't cut the length in a while. Just a few tips to help with the self confidence. Hope it helps some. I absolutely know what you are going through. emoticon

I too have the same problem. Most people that I talk to say losing weight will help it. I am just starting my weight loss journey. My suggestions for the immediate is to find a hair style that you are comfortable with. For me it was short with a side swept bang to cover the thinning hair. Short hair is better since the weight of long hair makes your hair lay flat and closer to the scalp. I think that this is one of the more embarrassing side effects of PCOS. I can shave/wax/pluck whatever weird facial hair that pops up, but this is something that makes it more official, it screams to the world, I am broken on the inside and look now you can see it on the outside. I cried once coming out of a restroom in a movie theater it had this really bright lighting overhead and made me look almost bald. You're not alone.

Sorry, the Monoi oil gives your hair strength, that is why I use it. Also, be sure to take a good multivitamin each day, biotin, and your B-vitamins (a good B complex)!

I am using shampoo with rosemary in it (Kiehl's brand - I bought mine at Neiman Marcus). Also, I am using on alternating days shampoo and conditioner with Monoi oil in it (Carol's Daughter brand at Macy's). All the best!

My hair is naturally curly and I would lose a BUNCH of hair everytime I washed it. I decided to get the Brazilian blowout to get rid of the frizz and to calm the curls and I barely lose hair now. Weird! it's expensive but worth it. Hope this helps!

I have lost so much of my hair already, since diagnosis...it is super thin and I have the symptom of "male pattern baldness" on the crown of the head...i used to have crazy thick hair...and now it falls off just by running my hands through it...it is so thin and it is very depressing...Have you experienced this? Have you found anything that helps regrow hair and make it thicker? Please share...I am afraid in a few months I will be balding...
