I have been on Metformen for 10 years now. I started out on 500 mgs morning and night and by the end of 30 days I was up to 1000 mgs twice a day. Never had any side effects after the first month. I did have a good bit of positive effects such as my hair stopped falling out. I lost weight and got pregnant after 15 years of trying.

Two causions: Do not ever let yourself get dehydrated and have blood tests to check your liver at least once a year.

Rain

One more tidbits. If you do get pregnant make sure the doctor watchs your progestarone level very early. Low Progestrone levels often causes miscarrages by week 14.

I was on Metformin for a year and the only side effects that I had was an upset stomach and diarrhea. I found out that when I ate something a little greasy, it usually upset my stomach. I actually lost 34 pounds during the year. Once, I started making sure that I was eating healthy, then I did not have an upset stomach. I also took my medicine at lunch and dinner, where I ate bigger meals then breakfast.
I just started back taking it. I have had very few side effects. But, I have found that it is going to depend on the person. Each, person is different.

I got it from my regular doctor...who happens to be a woman so she seemed to understand. Thanks for the tip on the $4 at Walmart list...I am on it!

Athena - I get my met from my regular Doctor, but you have to find one that knows something about PCOS, or bring in research to show him/her. A lot of doctors are clueless about this disorder.

Also, I think Walmart has Metformin generic (called Glucophage) on their $4 list.

It's worth checking into.

I just started taking it again yesterday. And yes, I had very bad stomach issues last night. But I expect them to subside in the coming days.

I would really like to start taking metformin, but I don't have insurance, or even a job for that matter. I was wondering if any of you got your prescription from a regular doctor, or if you all had to go to an endro or obgyn. I am going to attempt to get it from a regular doctor at a local low income clinic, but I dunno if the doc will cooperate.

I'm going to start my Met on Monday due to me taking antibiotics right now. But, I've been on it before and had to stop due to my 'script running out and not having the insurance, etc. However, I always had diaherrea my first few days but never knew it could be worse with soda. I guess, it's time to give up my Pepsi..*sniffle*
I will be glad when I don't have nearly two week periods though! :)

Wow! There are a bunch of us on here who are just starting Metformin! I started today as well. I was on it about 6 years ago when I was trying to get pregnant with my daughter. I'm done having babies and am ready to start taking care of myself now!

So, day one of Metformin for me had one episode of what I now remember as "stinky poops." I also had a brief sensation of lightheadedness, but that got better after I ate.

Can I do it? YES I CAN! (Thank you Bob the Builder!)

The only issues I had with metformin were when I took it in the morning. I just had to switch it to right before I went to bed. Just listen to your doctor and if you do have any side-effects make sure to tell them.

Hey guys, well I got 10 days off from my TOM, but then it came back again! Good news is today is day 7 of it, and it seems like it's almost finished! Whew! I didn't know what I'd do if it was month long every time! ;)

I guess I'm one of those who wants to get it.... just not for a month at a time! Lol!! Before the Metformin, I just had a light one every other month.... hopefully I don't have to look towards a month long one with only a few weeks break every time!

Things are better now, but thanks anyway!

I've had too many of those month-long sessions myself. It's such a beautiful thing to be off!

I'm starting to think there's 2 kinds of pcos - one where you celebrate getting your period, and one were you celebrate not getting it!

Most people need to take 1500 mg of metformin a day (500mg three times a day), but some PCOS specialists prescribe up to 3000 mg a day as this appears to be necessary in some cases.

Sorry it's been so rough on you wavesnshores! I don't have any advice for you, sorry! I had GI issues for maybe 3-4 days when I first started the metformin, but I'm only taking 500mg once a day. I need to call my doctor to find out if I can increase it. Is it normal to take more than just the 500mg once a day, b/c my doctor didn't mention anything about it! In fact, she never mentioned metformin until I asked about it, and even then she just said, "that's fine, you can take it. It might help a little."

Anyways, today is my 3rd day of no bleeding! Woohoo!! My period seriously lasted from Feb. 24th to March 24th!! Ridiculous! Hopefully at least I'll get a few weeks break now!

I'm on 1500 (3 met pills) a day. I've not had diarrhea...I seem destined towards the other extreme.

I'm not sure if it's the new diet (which includes way more dairy than I'm used to, but for me, being required to eat an egg, a whole glass of milk, and a small cheese cube everyday is 3x more dairy than I ever tried to get before I was diagnosed...skimping out on dairy was part of my way to try and keep my weight from going up.) Or it could be the pills (met & birth control) or just not having enough water to fight the new diet and all the pills.

For you ladies who are having a better time with the met, I'm happy for you. But if anyone else had a similar effect, please share what helped you.

Starting low and working your way up is definitely the best course of action. Lynzzie, you don't look like your BMI is over 35. The prescribing guidelines actually recommend not giving met to women with PCOS unless their BMI is over 35 (or they have DM, or some other criteria I can't recall at present), because of the serious potential side effects. Long term kidney and liver damage is a big risk. For me, even a miniscule dose (1/4 of a 500mg tab) once a day was enough to begin to damage my previously healthy liver.

Funnily enough, GI side effects was one thing that I was spared when I took met (probably due to the low dose and an already very healthy diet), but reading all the comments about the HORRENDOUS GI side effects many of you suffer ... isn't it just easier to avoid eating carbohydrates in excess? I get by pretty well on 30-60 gm of carbs a day. I'd much prefer that to incessant diarrhoea and stomach pains, not to mention the dizziness and lethargy.

Nyx, did you never try stopping the metformin to see if it was causing that awful bleeding? I think I'd go nuts if I bled every day for 2 years.

I just started Met 6 days ago. I started taking 500mg at breakfast and 500mg at dinner time, and am supposed to work up to 1000mg at both breakfast and dinner in the next few weeks. The first couple days were...not so good. I needed to be by a bathroom all the time! But now I figured out what I can handle eating and what to stay away from. It makes me a tad drowsy, but each day gets easier.
My advice, drinks loads of water, and stay away from high carb foods and sugary foods, your stomach will thank you. Good luck

This is day 13 for me on Metformin. And today is day 20 of my cycle. I haven't had any stomach issues or anything since having just a little diahrea the first 2 or 3 days. And I think the bleeding is starting to slow down. I hope it doesn't do this every month! And we'll see if I even get a period next month... for the last few years it's really been an every other month event. Maybe my body is just getting jumpstarted back to how it's supposed to be working! I have lost 3lbs. though since starting the Metformin 2 weeks ago! Yeah! :)

I have been on Metformin for about 3 months. The diahrea still comes, but I am going to take the advice about slacking off of the pop and see if that helps. I did not have any trouble with this medicine causing unstoppable bleeding. Really other than being kind of sick to my stomach, I have noticed no other negative side-effects after the first week or so.

Nxywolfwalker- I'm so sorry that happened to you!!! I'm praying that that isn't the case here! DH and I are really wanting to have children, and we don't have any yet. Plus, bleeding all the time is just a pain! DH and I are going camping this weekend with friends (no real bathrooms or electricity), so I'm really getting nervous about how these side effects will effect me this weekend!

I don't know I bleed 24/7 once I started on met and I never let up till I got to the point that my GYN did a hysterectomy cause she couldn't get the bleeding stopped (yet the bleeding started shortly after I started on the met on a regular basis - my endro paid it no mind, said the met couldn't cause the bleeding that it had to be from else where ... I don't know but part of me blames the met for the years of hock stick that I went though before it was all taken out).

Ok, today is day 7 for me on Metformin. I think my symptoms have been minimal. The first day I felt drunk all day, and dizzy, and a few days I've had a little diahhrea, but nothing too bad. I actually feel great, and I've moved past my lowest weight in the last 2 years (yeah!! i kept getting stuck at 197!)

However, how much is metformin supposed to affect your cycle?? Today is day 13 of my cycle, and it is normally short and light (at least for the past several years), and only happens every other month or so. I started the metformin last thursday (day 7 of my cycle), and friday it went nuts. It's never been this heavy in my life (not even 1 day!), and it's been constant since friday. Is this something I should be concerned about?

I am going back on metformin tomorrow. I was on it before and it made me stomach upset. But most likely because I drank coffee often. I am hoping for better results this time.

I was just diagnosed a couple weeks ago, even though I've been learning about PCOS for a few months, thinking I might have it.

I start Metformin (extended release version) this weekend, the same way you described. I was warned: don't drink soda. 1 can a day still adds up to diarrhea with Metformin (I know this only because I asked...I just don't know how mornings will work without a Pepsi.) I hope it works well for all of us.

My doctor just put me on Metformin last week. She said it should help with the weight loss since I was doing everything right for months - but not losing. I think it might be helping already because I lost 3 pounds this week. I'm taking a low dose twice a day. Only side effect for me is a little diarrhea.

Everyone is different, i was on the regular met from 2003 till 2009, when my endro finally allowed me to switch over to the extended lease version - still same issues, but at least I can go most of the day without rushing to the washroom (a blessing when I was virtually house bound for oh so many years on the normal stuff).

Starting it slow is a good idea, and if you have issues you can talk to your doc about it - that and maybe you will be lucky enough not to have any.

I've been on metformin for about 5 months now. I take 2 a day. One at breakfast one at dinner. I was drowsy about a half hour after taking the pill for about 2 weeks. That's the only effect I have had. Just giving my 2 cents worth.

Hi,
I never got used to Metformin and it made me a little sick for about a year. I think that it did allow me to lose weight (with TONS of exercise and major diet changes), but the nausea just wasn't worth it. I did think that the time-release was a little easier on my system.
I hope that I can find an alternative that doesn't make me feel as though I am going to vomit, but you never know!
Good luck and I think people don't have such severe side effects.

I'm a nurse so I understand Metformin, how it works with insulin resistance, etc. But I've also heard a lot of horrible side effects but a lot of success too. I'm starting it tomorrow on my day off, as recommended by my doctor, and frankly, I'm a bit nervous. I'm starting off at once at breakfast for a week, two times a day for another week, then attempt three times a day.
Anyone have any thoughts?
