Hi all!

I've been walking with no particular goal in mind other than to keep walking, so I got interested in this challenge.

Just a question: You know how there are runs to support breast cancer research or autism research? Do people have walk/runs for PCOS?

I am almost done with week 5! Surprisingly I am loving running. I don't necessarily love it while I'm doing it but I'm feeling great and find myself almost craving my runs and wanting to do more! We signed up for 2 races and have plans for at least 1 a month for the rest of the year. After I am done with this I just may start training for a10K. Good luck everyone.

I started my couch to 5K challenge earlier this week. Just one more day and then I get to rest for 2. Then on to week 2. I have a good friend doing this challenge with me, and I think that has made all the difference. She has been there to make sure I go etch day, and she's helping to push me to do extra walking also. Now we just need to find a race to sign up for to give us an ultimate goal.

I am doing the 5k Your-Way challenge on Spark. I did it last year and over the course of the year lost 25lbs (I know in a year I had hoped to lose more, but now I know why it is so much harder for me to get it off). I've since put that weight back on, been diagnosed with PCOS, and have become very uphappy with myself. I've decided to get back into things. I've got my husband doing this next 5k with me on March 24. We are starting training way late but it will be better than nothing. We have to start somewhere. I have another race in May. I haven't decided about one in April yet...

Graduate of c25k and I loved it! I've always hated running ever since I was a kid but this program made it easier to transition into running. Now I run 5k three times a week without walking. I highly recommend this program!!

This is an old topic, but I was actually just looking at doing this program before I logged on to SP tonight. I've never been a runner (I loved playing sports, but hated running just for the sake of it), but I think I'm going to give it a try. A little worried about previous trouble with my shins though. emoticon

Morning all. I'm a couch 2 5k'er too, only minus the couch part. i've never been a couch potato but never considered myself a runner either. I've made it 2/3 of hte way through c25k before and both times was knocked back by a shin injury. This itme, so far so good. As a matter of fact I just did week 3 day 2 in the pouring rain here on my street. I'm running my first 5k 8/21. Halfway between getting married and going back to college.
Cheers!

Absolutely love this app! I use it in conjunction with Nike Plus to track how far I've run/walked and calories burned. It's great for a beginner, like myself, and motivates you. Starting week two on Monday.

Keep pushing! YOU WILL REACH THOSE GOALS!

LOL! Thanks for replying and I will search out that team. I was going to attempt it again tomorrow morning and will take the speed down. I can power walk a 3.5 so maybe I'll walk at a 3.2 and try to jog at a 3.7...I stuck out the first minute, but my chest felt like it was going to explode!

WHOA 5 is wayyyyy tooo fast for me! I started my first 3 weeks on the treadmill and about died, I at least tried to run 4.5 but it was too much to start. I didn't get back on the treadmill till last week and I was at a 3.5 or maybe 3.7, can't remember. I ran on indoor track or outside. The treadmill very much intimidated me until I beat it last week! I felt like if I couldn't go a certain speed, if I had to back it down a notch I was failing. And that's just not true! You have to find your own speed and I found that by not being on the treadmill. Just completing the program is the goal, not doing it the fastest. Once you've done it you can go back and work on speed, that's what many of us are doing on the Fat Runners club in the couch 2 5K team forum. Go there if you really want to do it, it's WONDERFUL! I'm not fast at all but I can run 2.75 miles w/o stopping, that is after feeling like I would croak doing week 1! It can be done and I'm sure you can do it. They key is to not try it too fast!

So, I kind of tried this yesterday on the treadmill...uhh! Maybe a 5 speed is too fast to jog on the treadmill.

Good luck, happy running to all you going to start. I did week 8 day 1 today! ran 2.75 miles straight! My advice to you all is to take it slow. Don't try to run too fast, that is a mistake to make. I still obsess that I'm too slow but it's still jogging to me even though it might be a long-legged one's walk! Do plenty of stretching afterwards and invest in good running shoes-be fitted for them if possible. Those are all things that have helped me! Good luck!

I need to check this team's forums more often! I totally just started this sunday! I might have to put off finishing week one though, because my lower back, hips, hamstrings, and knees are all sore from power squats on the weekend. Hopefully they'll recover soon!

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could; some blunders and absurdities have crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; you shall begin it serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.

I'd like to participate in this, for one big reason.
I tried once when I was 17 to join the Navy, but I failed one of the coordination exercises. There's no way I would have made it through bootcamp anyhow! While I was much lighter then, I was in no way fit.
So, my biggest goal right now is to get fit to finally be able to join the Navy. I was planning on starting fitness training for that once I shed some of the extra pounds.
The problem with all this? While it sounds good in theory, and it is my ideal goal to be able to run a mile and a half - which is required to pass bootcamp, and then I think required to do once every 6 months so they can make sure you are maintaining your fitness level - I can't run. Quite literally. My legs were built just a tad wrong, the angles are too extreme - to quote a doctor I had, I'm "slightly knock-kneed." As a result, I had to go through physical therapy when I was 14 to learn to walk properly, and all through middle and high school had doctor mandates not to run. Every time I would try to run, I would end up with a sprained ankle, or shin splints (teeny tiny fractures in the shins.)

The weakness of my legs is also the reason for my inability to perform that specific coordination exercise when I went through MEPS.

SO. This seems like an impossible dream to me. Has anyone else had this kind of problem? Can anyone give me some advice on how I can run without hurting myself? emoticon

I came to the party late - but I will start TODAY - November 5th. I've done Couch to 5K once before a few years ago and it really works. I'll never forget the first day I ran 20 minutes without stopping, I ended up crying.

I have a treadmill at home, so I will be using that during the fall/winter (I live in Connecticut) and will change over to track/road running in the Spring. By then I should be able to run 5K with very little trouble, right? I'm so excited to be in this challenge!

Our Holy month of Ramadan has started and the fasting has begun! I'm sooooo excited.

I completely forgot about this challenge!!! I'm not sure if I'm up to it yet but I'm going to check it out and keep it on hand once the holy month is over.

Have a great weekend!

I started the c25k last week. I did ok. However, it was hard and I had to modify the walk time to 2 mins instead of the 90 sec. I'm ok with going slow. I'm 213 lbs and I don't want to hurt myself. I know running is hard on the body. I'm going to do week one again this week.
You know what they say.... slow and steady wins the race.

I once followed a program exactly like this when I was in 10th grade (3 loooong, weight filled years ago) and I was just thinking about it the other day, because I couldnt remember the breakdowns in time to try it again. Thanks for posting! I am going to try this when I get back to school, see if I can do a 5K, because my school hosts a 5K every spring. When I did a 5K last time, so long ago, I did it in 37 minutes, but I want to do better than that. So now my new goal is to be able to do the 5K in under 30 minutes, Im excited!!

Love,
Jenn

I think I can, I think I can... Screw that, I know I can!

I'd like to join the challenge, although I'm not sure how closely I'll be following the exact program. I'm not really "on the couch" now...I ran two miles today, and that's about my max. I'd really like to be able to run 5K, though, and then find a local 5K run to participate in!

I was convinced to join a 5K at the end of March and decided I wanted to train myself for it. I'm on week 4 and just did day 1 tonight. I have the podcasts that has the music and timing for when you should be running/walking. I'm mostly on the treadmill, but sometimes make it outside for "practice" for my big event.

I have HATED running basically all my life, but I think I just tried too much too soon. I like this program and it pushes me just enough but I can reach the goals.

I run on the treadmill at the gym.... I used to feel exactly as you do.... but seriously, I've been doing it for a few weeks and nobody even glances my way!

I am just now completing workout 2 of week 2 because I was slightly injured and we traveled.... I'm still out of town but my hotel has a fitness center... so I hit the treadmill today. Yay!

My best advice is don't think about it... just do it... just go, get on the treadmill ... do your 5 minute warmup .. and turn on some music and just GO....

Everyone at the gym is there for the very same reason.... to improve themselves!

I had wanted to start this before Christmas but got side-tracked with all the holiday stuff so I am hoping to start it soon. My big hang up is running on the treadmill at the gym - I am nervous for other people to see me (I know no one is looking and it's in my head...but still).

But..you guys are motivating! Are you running inside or out?

Lisa - it was very empowering... unforunately, I'm a little behind on week two.. I injured my heel and it got infected.. so I'm still on my antibiotics and it finally feels better... so I'm starting week 2 tonight.....

I like that there is a set 9 weeks to this too.... I enjoy completing things... so this really works for me!

To time my intervals, I just watch the timer on the treadmill..... I do don't podcasts either... I just put on some get up and go type music... usually techno or rock.... and I'm good to go :)

EYEONTHEGOAL,
Sorry - Im not much help... I never did C25K, and when I did do intervals, I just used my watch. It's a Timex 'Sleek', and you can set it to beep at the end of each interval. I like my own music, so I never did get into podcasts much.

Katie,
You did it - yay!!! Doesn't it feel so empowering? :)

Another newbie to the boards, brought by the usual January resolutions. A friend suggested the C23K program, but my first issue is figuring out the intervals without running while staring at a watch. Is the best way to solve that to use one of the podcasts? Any suggestions for particular ones?

Hey everyone!!

Hope you are all doing good with your running. I haven't been posting much lately, so i thought i better come on here and give you all an update! So i finished off my week 3 today! I get to start my week 4 tomorrow. ( Since i am running 6x a week i do 2 weeks in 1 week, so that i will finish the program before my 5k this month ) I must say I'm a little shocked that i will be running 5 minutes non stop now!( Or 20 minutes come week 5! Ahh! ) That just seems insane to me, since i can hardly even do the 3 minutes as is. Haahaha.

Well that's not exactly true. I was awesome out there today. I have come a long way that's for sure, and for the first time i wasn't gasping for air by the time i started my walking intermission! I almost didn't even do my running today. I was tempted to go home. We had set out for our nightly walk, and upon arriving at the park i run at, it started to POUR rain. After trying to talk myself out of it i just handed my husband my umbrella and went for it, before i had a chance to convince myself. I'm not usually one for going all out no matter what so i surprised myself tonight!! I came home looking like a wet sewer rat but a happy sewer rat at that!

Hybridtheory45: I'm sorry to hear about your injury! That is just the worst. You are doing awesome and then something like that has to happen :( I hope you get better soon. I'm sure it won't put you too behind. August is a way's away. You will make it I'm sure!

I know how you feel though, i too keep hurting my ankle. It's the shoes i'm wearing to do my running i'm certain. I run in skater shoes right now. Haha. That's how long it has been since i have ran! I don't even have proper shoes for it! So my husband and I are going shopping tomorrow to get me a proper running shoe. I'm tired of the pains! Not to mention skater shoes arnt exactly the easiest shoes to run in! I hope that once i get these new shoes they will help me to easily run my 5 minutes non stop tomorrow.
Anyways whenever you feel better just get right back to whichever week you left off at. I'm sure you will do just fine :)

And welcome Paintfumes ( * Gasp* you inhale paintfumes!? Haha, love your username). So glad that your trying the c25k again, and i agree a hilly course may not have been the best way to start running! It would be de motivating that's for sure, You would probably think you are worse then you actually are, You will probably surprise yourself this time around! How did you do on Monday by the way? Hope everything is going good!

Anyway that's all from me, good luck to all the rest of you doing this challenge! I will talk to you all soon!!

PINTHIN- My 5k is in August. I was originally supposed to do one last month but got really sick so I skipped it. I'm still on Week 6...I just injured my ankle so I had to stop running for a bit. I hope it doesn't put me behind!

I tried doing the C25k program back in January, but terribly discouraged when I couldn't complete w1d1. I think it was my route choice that killed me (Hilly through a golfcourse--maybe not the best idea) but I really want to start it again. I read so many success stories from it!

I think I'm going to be starting it on Monday (I'll do a mile/5k tomorrow to get my starting time :) )! Wish me luck!

Hi hybridtheory45

Yeah good idea, ill go pick up some mase later on today! Hahaha. I don't actually run alone alone. My husband comes with me he is usually at the other end of the park while I'm running but he is still there if i need him! He is the only person i don't really care who sees me running, i mean he sees me when i first wake up in the morning and it doesn't get much worse then that! Hahah.

I figure now though that i had best get used to running in front of people because i have a feeling the 5k isn't a one woman race! So i better un-shy-a-fy myself pretty quickly! hehee

My jaw is much better now, the odd pain every now and then when i chew. And I'm working very hard not to clench. I find that by sipping on water throughout the day with a straw keeps my mouth too busy to clench and i get in all my water goal's!

The only really good thing i have noticed sofar is how quickly i recover. I feel like i don't even need to be walking 2 minutes after every 90 seconds I'm ready to go after 30 seconds! I don't though, i don't want to push it to far and end up hurting myself and then not run at all.

Other then that i did my week 2 day 2 yesterday and it was harder then most day's... i think it's because I'm getting a little sick. I wanted to quit so many times but i pulled through! It was so worth it. How have you been doing though? Which day/week are you on now? When are you doing your 5k? Or are you just taking the challenge to be able to run 5k?

Anyway I'm off to fold laundry so ill talk to you soon! Take care!

Be careful running alone at night pinthin! It's dangerous! Make sure you at least carry mase on you. :)

Sorry to hear about your jaw...clenching will definitely make that happen! Lockjaw is no fun so be careful about the clenching in the future too.

Don't worry about being out of breath at first...I was too! That's why the program is designed to get you running in short intervals; so you get used to it. You'll be running 5ks in no time. :)

Hello everyone!!

I haven't heard from any of you on here, so i hope i'm not the only one left doing the challenge!! Just keep it up ladies, you'll get there!!

As for me. My jaw is getting better on its own. It still hurts, but it's an improvement! ( Who would have known clenching could have resulted in a weeks worth of pain...and possibly longer!! ) I ended up missing my dentist appointment. I was 10 minutes late and they couldn't squeeze me in. ( Even though i was booked for an hour!!! I still had 50 mins left! Excuses! ) So i just had to hope for the best!

Other then that i did end up doing my running that night. Then i took 2 day's off because i was in too much pain. But i got right back on it the day before yesterday, and yesterday i did it as well. So tonight when i go running again i will be doing week 2 day 2! I'm on a roll. I love running again, it's such an amazing feeling!

It's been a little hard though, because i only like to run in the night. ( I'm a bit shy so i try to avoid people altogether. ) and suddenly it seems as though people have decided they want to come out in the night too. It's gotten so busy in the parks by my place that the only way for me to have the park alone would be to run after midnight!!! It's insane! I always walk in the park after 10 and there was never anyone before... and now suddenly there are people all the time! I have had to suck it up a few times and run infront of people, but they are usually rowdy teens and it's embarrassing. I'm wheezing and my face is purple and i only run in 90 second spurts, so it's a funny sight i imagine. But i have managed to prevail... while hunting for a better ( vacant ) park in which to run until i get in better shape.

Anyways that's all the update on how i have been doing...I hope the rest of you are doing just as good, and i can't wait to hear from some of you! Ill update my progress again soon!! emoticon

Hi ladies

I did the week 1 day 1 yesterday night, and i did pretty awesome if i do say so myself! However i have hit a tiny setback today. Errr, actually a LARGE setback.

Well yesterday i was clenching my teeth repeatedly ( It's a stress reliever of mine! I know horrible stress reliever! ) and when i got home from my run i took a bite of a carrot only to be accosted by the most TERRIBLE pain in my jaw! I couldnt even finish the carrot! So i took and advil and decided it would be best if i went to sleep!

Anyway i get to sleep and i wake up today to the same pain only MUCH MUCH worse. Now i cannot close my mouth the entire way without severe spasms!! I can hardly even chew, swallowing hurts sometimes. So i looked in the mirror and discovered that my teeth are now very Misaligned!!! Im serious, my jaw must have shifted in my sleep! So it's been a long day of stress and pain, and getting my poor husband to fetch me soft food's so i can eat.

I MIGHT be able to run tonight, but all this pain and soft food's have been making me feel a little tired and sick. So we will have to see. At least i have kept up with my diet today! I even bought v8 vegetable juice so i can get in my vegetable servings, since i cant chew the actual vegetables! And i bought fruit to blend in my blender since i can't chew those either! It's a little frustrating ( and scary :( ), but luckily the dentist could sqeeze me in tomorrow to take a look at my jaw and teeth.

Hopefully i will beable to still do my running!Wish me a lot of luck.

HYBRIDTHEORY45 welcome to the team. And congrat's on being able to run 20 minute's straight, that is so awesome! I hope that will be me one day! I agree the feeling after running is incredible. I alway's feel such a sense of achievement and pride! Runner's high i think some refer to it as. Anyway that's fantastic and good luck on entering into your 6th week! Let me know how everything goes, keep in touch.

Bye for now everyone! ( Ill keep you all updated on my 'situation' )
Deanna ps: I lost a pound this morning! Woohoo, something good in my otherwise bad day!emoticon

Hi everyone! New to the team but not to the C25k program. I just ran Week5Day3 today. 20 minutes straight! I can't believe that a month ago I could barely run for a minute and now I've run 20. I won't lie, I kinda felt like throwing up right after I finished but I feel soooo good right now.

So keep your head up, it will happen and you will be running for long periods of time in no time! :)

Oooh, this is so great! I just registered for a 5k and i just started running about a month ago and have worked my way up to running 10-15 minutes. I was worried i wouldn't beable to run long enough by the time the 5k came.
But thanks to this guide i now know how to go about training myself better!

Of course i only have about 4 and a half weeks until the big day and the program requires 9 weeks, haha. But that's ok i usually work out for 6x a week and the program would have me working out 3x a week, so i will just combine 2 weeks worth of workout's into 1 week and i will have the program done in 4 and a half weeks...perfect timing, lol. Hope that made some sense! Haha.

Wish me luck ladies!! ( Im gonna need it! )

I've gone ahead and done the w2d2 plan because, I wasn't feeling like I did anything with the w1 stuff...I like this plan because it gives me a more concise way of getting my body used to what it takes to do a 5k...slowly...
I hope everyone is doing well and getting closer to their goals.
to the 5K!

Well, I finally gave it a try today... I lasted about 10 min with walking and jogging. Went walking another 10-15 minutes after that. I guess I'll have to work up to handling week one, but it's better then nothing.

Going to have to keep working on it!

Amy ;-)

Even small improvements are better then no improvements!

i was the last girl too but i always cheated and made it look like i was in the middle. n so i started to do the jog for a minute and i was doing good but somehow i hurt my leg. i didnt notice it until the end of the work out when i got off of the treadmill. maybe i pulled something. i have been icing it. but it still hurts. so i am gonna try again in a few weeks, hope everyone has a good day....

I'm in! I'm going to do one of the workouts today (friday) but then start the real Week 1, next week.

I've always wanted to be "a runner"

Just to somehow have that descriptor show up anywhere around my name, has always seemed impossible, but this program sounds do-able. Hard, but doable!

I used to go jogging with my friend around a track, and it took me weeks to be able to run a whole lap without stopping to walk. Even in mid-school, I was always the last girl to cross the finish line during the dreaded timed mile runs. To be honest, even running for 60 seconds sounds like a lot, but I'm going to try and if it is too hard I'll just start off even slower...but I'll still get there eventually!

Hi everybody, I'm going to join in on the couch to 5k programme, once I've got all of the necessary equipment to keep things in place if you know what I mean.

Cool; orange would be a neat colour. I'm boring and got the black! ;-)

Thanks for the info Lisa! I searched online forever, but never really found much detail to tell me anything on them. I'll have to check it out... $35 isn't bad. I'm in MN and it's just too cold to be outside long yet (especially when the wind is blowing)! And I don't want to look like a dork staring at the clock or a watch at the gym. So hopefully this will get me more motivated!

I'm really getting mad at myself for not starting yet, but I just haven't found the time or enough effort I guess. Thankfully the wedding I'm maid-of-honor in is this weekend so less going on! And maybe once that is done and I can stop running around with my head cut off, I can get back to a regular work out routine and my energy will come back!

My fitness class is done now (bumming) so I need to start something during this break till another class starts that I like. Hopefully, I get going on this cause I think varying my routines are good.

Amy ;-)

Hi Amy,

I really recommend the Timex Sleek watch... It's got an interval timer, so you can set it to beep at each interval, and then re-set it as you progress through the weeks.

I've had two of 'em. Only had to get the second 'cause I lost the first. Love this watch!

I've worn it in the pool, in the lake, in the ocean - and in the shower.

It has 3 alarms, interval timers, and a regular timer.

For the low price point of $35, it's the best one I can recommend. See the link below! :)

I didn't start like I planned a while back. But the plan is to start next week now once my fitness class is done. My feet were bothering me, so I wasn't going to push it. Since I won't have all the time on my feet with my class, I think they should be fine if I take it slow.

Does anyone have any advice on how to time things out with out having to stare at a watch? Is there a sports watch or something that I can get that I can set to beep or something at what ever interval?

Amy ;-)

Hi everyone! I am not much of a runner (bad joints) but I do love to walk. Power walking is just as good as running if you do it right and also easier on your joints, so don't feel bad if you are just walking. Also remember to start slow, you can really hurt yourself if you start to fast. Always stretch first and cool down after. Sorry I am a mother hen sometimes. Good luck to everyone. And for the ankle if anything hurts on your body please take a break the next day and stay off of it. Pushing through pain is not as good as some make it out. Try a heating pad or ice, I know they are both different but I have heard different opinions on which works better. Tylenol is good. Drink lots of water for muscle pain. If it is joint pain, slow down trust me it's not worth ruining your joints. They hurt lol. You can get ankle supports I believe at fitness shops or medical supply stores. Wear proper shoes and try again :D Other than that I am out of advice.

I'm going back to walking for now. Running is way to hard on my feet and ankles, or maybe when I drop some more pounds I can try jogging again.

I used to be a runner too and I'm trying to get back into it. I did Week One of C25k, but I think that my feet need to get a little stronger before I start jogging or they'll get injured easily. So, I'm just walking right now, but once my feet get stronger, I'll be starting this again.

I think I'm going to give this a try! I think I need to vary my workouts more then I do now so maybe this will help out. I'll have to go check out the program yet, but since so many of you guys like it I figure it can't be bad.

This also gives me an excuse to order some new shoes! I bought some new ones a while back for walking and such and love them! So I wanted to get them for the gym too, they have much more support then the ones I wear to the gym now. Had them for a yr, so it's time for replacement anyways really.

Good luck everyone!!!

Amy ;-)

How have you all been doing? I'm going to go hunt for a timer this weekend in which I can program my intervals. I can do 6 rounds of the track alternating between walking and jogging.

I've learnt my lesson big time from last week. When I start feeling in pain I stop and switch exercises. But I'm going to keep working on it!

Have a great weekend everyone.

Question: How do I run so that I'm not sore for the next 4 days?

And how do you guys do the intervals on the treadmill I can't program the workout into the ones at my gym.

I'll try again tomorrow (fingers crossed).

I gave it a try Monday and I made it through 6 of the 8 one minute runs. I was outside instead of at the gym and I had to quit because my ears were numb and my inner ear was hurting really bad.
Note to self: Do running inside or at gym when it is below freezing!!
I will do much better Wednesday!

I use to love long distance running when I was younger. I'd love to compete as a kid. Want to get back to that BAD! I'm in on this! Thanks for sharing this with us. Running seems way far off right now but I'm gong to give it a go!
