Ran my first 5K Saturday...my time was 43:12, I need much improvement, but I did it! Needless to say, I was dead last (There were only 80 entrants) but my daughter who ran a 32:13, ran back to run along beside me. Next time I am entering a larger race and will probably not be last which can be very discouraging

I fiinished my first 5K today. Regretfully, I couldn't run the whole thing. My time was pretty good, for me anyway, 46 minutes! I usually run a 19 - 20 minute mile. Now, I have a real starting point. Kona, Hawaii, is REALLY HOT at 9:30 am!!! It was too hot, and I was overheating about 1.3 of the way into the race. I had to slow down or I would have ended up on a gurney. I was starting to feel chilled. Next time, I'll be wearing a hat and sunscreen. My face got way too much sun today.

Just completed the C25K program, so excited, what an amazing feeling it is. I finished in 40:36 so I do need to up my time, but it was so hot outside I had to go slow. Never thought I would be where I am and really am proud of myself for sticking with it. Yay me, guess I will sign up for my first 5k race now

finished yesterday morning! found a great, really challenging section of a local trail with tons of hills, and that is absolutely gorgeous. the last few minutes were pure torture, but i jogged the entire way. im about at a 12 minute mile, so 30 minutes for me was more like 2.5ish miles. i plan to stick to 30 minutes for another week or two, then bump up a few minutes at a time until im at 3.1. maybe some interval training, and then it's on to bridge to 10k!!

I officially finished C25K today, woohoo! I went with a friend who has not run in awhile, so there were quite a few walk breaks. But we walked fast, and our run pace was good, so the app shows it to be my best distance and walk pace.

I plan to continue running 3x a week for 30 minutes, and use the app at least once a week to see if my pace improves. I'd love to be able to run a 5-K in 30 minutes!

AnnieLou, that is awesome, very impressive that you can run 40 minutes straight! I am also thinking about what to do next. I might repeat Weeks 7, 8 and 9, or just stick with 30-minute runs. And I'm definitely going to bike and hike more often.

I finished this morning's 5-K in 35:44! It wasn't hot, but the humidity was 99% because it had just stopped raining. I wanted to be under 36 minutes, so I'm happy. I took several short walk breaks.

I learned from seeing the official finish photos that next time, to look straight ahead as I approach instead of at the ground, and smile! Nothing I can do about being super red-faced, LOL.

Just finished the W9D1 5k run - running a straight 40 min to hit 5k! I've been looking at a lot of different options for what to do next and am thinking a combo of redoing C25K with jog/run intervals to pick up my speed during the week, with a longer run on the weekends. Great job, everyone!!

Under 30, wow, congrats!

I'm not finished with C25K, but I ran my first 5K today, The Graffiti Run, with several walk breaks as planned. It was not an officially timed race, but I finished in 35:??, almost 3 min. better than my best Week 8 pace! I ran the first mile with a friend, and we had a blast. I doubt all the color will ever come out of my white clothing!

Hope I am doing this right :0)

I have been working at this since last August and successfully completed my first 5k in March, my second was Saturday and my next one is on May 4! I am so addicted to running that I am training for a half marathon in June.

Congrats to all who have conquered this thing, and to all of us who are just trying to improve!!! Consistency and support are the things that have kept me going. :0)

Excellent work everybody!

I did my first 5K of 2013 today and it was great. I thought I hadn't trained enough but I did my personal best...this was helped by the course, which was very flat!

Keriis, I have been working on lowering my time for 5k, too. I got it down from 36 to a little over 34 min over the last couple of weeks. The bad news is that I started to have really tight calves from pushing myself to run faster. After reading that it could cause me other problems like plantat fasciitis if I am not careful (a condition I have struggled with before), I decided to rest it a couple days with lots of stretching and now I am back to a slower pace for only 30 min instead of 34 min. I plan to keep this up for a week or so to see how my calves feel. Eventually, I am going to try to better my time again.

Jamielogical, THAT is a fantastic idea for increasing your time!! :D I never ever thought of doing it that way, but really it makes a ton of sense! I have been reading lots about running and it says not to do interval training before you have built up your miles... but really running the 6mph isnt' super fast anyway and I think increasing your time from a 36-min 5K to a 30-min 5K in 8 weeks is totally reasonable!

Thank you thank you for the great idea! I just finished my fastest-ever 2-mile jog the other day at an 11-minute pace, so I think I will start this idea at Week 3 and see how it goes. :) You are awesome!!

I ran my first 5k this past Saturday, at the Shippensburg Community Fair... I came in at 42:30, which made me rather happy!

Luckily, my calf healed, and I was able to run 5k in my neighborhood again this morning. I felt strong while running it, so I think I am on my way now. I will have to find a race to enter next.

Thanks everyone! Congrats to you, too, EGrace5. I am going to rest my calf for a couple more days by just doing some low-impact exercise, but I hope to try 5k again on Wednesday.

I made it! I finally ran 5k. It took me 36 minutes. I wasn't able to do it on Wednesday as planned since I pulled my calf muscle after just a few minutes. I iced and rested for two days. It was a little sore but I decided to just take it slow. I must have gotten a little faster as I kept running since my pace seemed similar to what it has always been (which is slow of course). I think I am ready to enroll in a race.

Yesterday I ran my third 5K! I'm completely amazed that I can do it.

I wasn't feeling great yesterday, so I was just going to ride my bicycle instead, but I found myself really wanting to run. So I did!

It was hot, it was sunny, it was humid, but I could still do it!

The only downside is that I forgot to do one of the stretches and WOW are the upper/back of my legs SORE. Like, for real it hurts to sit!

JamieLogical, yes, I did have to repeat a couple of days in one or two of the weeks. I think it was a mental thing in some ways because I just wanted to be sure I could make it before I moved on to the next challenge. Now, it seems like it all went by so fast. I used SparkPeople's Map your Route feature today to see if I could find a 5K route for tomorrow. It looks like it is something I could do since it doesn't seem to be too much more than what I did on Monday, so I am going to try it tomorrow. Wish me luck!

SUZREY, you are so right! It's an amazing program. By the time you get to the end, you look back at the beginning and it is hard to believe how far you've come. I think a lot of people start in Week 1 and look ahead to Week 9 thinking "yeah right, like that will ever happen!" But if they stick with it, even if they have to repeat some workouts or even full weeks, they can make it to Week 9 and truly call themselves a runner.

I completed the C25k program with the goal of running 30 minutes last week. I don't think I am actually running 5k yet, but I haven't actually tracked the mileage I ran yesterday. I plan to do that today and then map out 5k in my neighborhood to see if I can run that next. I will look to run a 5k in the early Fall if I can find one because I don't want to run in the heat if I can help it. I have been running outdoors this whole time, but I needed to run at 6:30 a.m. to beat the heat, so even with the early morning 5ks, they won't be early enough for me in 90 degree weather.

My real goal, though, is to continue to run for 30 minutes a day, three days a week to stay in shape. I hope to get faster so I can go farther during the 30 minutes, but I don't have any grand plans in mind for running much more than 30 minutes. I just want to be healthy and consistently active. I do strength training and other cardio on my off running days. This program has been amazing! I am so grateful to have heard about it because it really is incredible that this program allowed me to become a runner for the first time in my life in my mid 40's.

I finished C25k this past Saturday and ran in a 5k yesterday. It's technically not my "first" 5k, since I ran in 6 races last year, but it is my first post-surgery and my first since completing this round of C25k. I had a pretty terrible finish time of 42:20, but honestly that wasn't too bad given the circumstances. While I "finished" C25k on Saturday, I was still only running at 5 mph. That meant I was only actually running 2.5 miles. I was walking the remaining .6 miles at 3.5 mph, which meant my treadmill 5k time was 41:20. So really, only a minute slower out in the real world with sun and heat and hills and hard pavement isn't really all that bad.

On Sunday I plan to start C25k all over again and focus on my speed. I plan to run all of the "walk" intervals at 5 mph and then jump up to 6.2 mph for the "run" intervals. If I can stick to that, in another 9 weeks I should be able to run the full 30 minutes at 6.2 mph, which is a 5k!

On 4/28 I was here posting my first 5k and now I would like to inform everyone that I have officially completed the c25k program. I am so proud of myself. I can now run for 30 mins straight. I would like to complete another 5k to see what my time will be and maybe eventually start training for a 10k.

Thanks for everyone's support! I loved that this group made me accountable to run every week.

I did it! I ran my first 5K race yesterday! And I did what I set out to do which is run the whole thing! So proud of myself. Took me about 38 minutes. My hubby and kids were there cheering me on and my daughter even got to run the last 100 yards or so with me.
The race atmosphere was so much fun too! I can understand the addiction! I think I'm hooked. All in all its one of my proudest accomplishments, next to my children. It was an awesome mothers day!

Your mind will quit a thousand times before your body will. Feel the fear and do it anyway!

I DID IT!

I ran the Y-ME Breast Cancer 5k race today! I was beyond nervous before we started but I got into the grove. The first mile was rough but it all got better from there. It was amazing because not only was I running for a good cause but I was doing this for me. It was a step closer to being healthy and being a better me! I'm officially hooked and I can't wait for my next race!

OMG....I DID IT!!! I just ran my first 5k and can't remember the last time I was this proud! It was amazing and I'm just so over joyed that I set a goal and completed it! I know have the "bug" and I can't wait to get my next one in. Want to run...run...run!!!
Towards the end, when I rounded the last bend and I could see the finish line I got all teary eyed. I couldn't believe that I was....make that I DID this! I then saw my husband on the side cheering me on, I swear I could hear him through my headphones. I was super proud and know that I can accomplish anything. It is all mind over matter and I proved that to myself today!

I walk/ran my first 5k ever on 4/28. This was such a wonderful accomplishment. It was only week 5 for me on the c25k program so I warmed up for 5 mins and then ran 20 mins straight and then had to tie my shoe after 20 mins. I walked for a couple mins to get my breath and then ran for about another 5-8 more mins. I completed the race in 40 mins total. About half way through I almost lost it because I realized what I was doing and almost cried. There were so many people on the sidelines cheering everyone on. It was so inspiring for me to have complete strangers yelling out to me to keep going. I really had to hold back my tears and refocus. If I started to cry that was going to be it for me because how can you breath and cry? haha Needless to say I held it together and finished the race. I am so proud of myself for doing this. After the race I have continued to work through my c25k program. I have about 3 more weeks left before I complete the program. My next goal is to run the entire race without stopping. I can't even tell you how empowering this was to do this race. I ran with my DH and he was so excited when he was finished he was talking about when we could do it again. This really was a wonderful experience.

P.S. I am considering a mud run in June (just for fun - not to compete) I'm loving these challenges!!
