I actually proposed to him. We were sitting down watching tv with my dad on Christmas Eve and my fiancé walked into our bedroom and saw the ring box and asked me what it was so I got on my knee and asked him to make me the happiest woman in the world.

We were on vacation first starting in Raleigh NC for my cousins wedding (must have been in the air!) then we drove to Wildwood Crest, NJ. The second morning we woke up and went to the beach right after sunrise.. we walked and talked, just in pure happiness.. no stress no worries just us and the beautiful beach! As we walked he knelt down in the water and I had no idea what he was doing down there getting his shorts all wet, then he continued with my name and a ring... he proposed and how could I say no!? I knew he could be romantic ;) People walking passed congratulated us and said "welcome to the club!" It sure was the best day of my life. I will never forget it.

He told me a few days before that he was going to propose. On Father's Day we went out to lunch and he asked me what I wanted for dessert. I told him(it was a smore chocolate cake) and when dessert arrived, the ring was on top of the marshmellows. He got down on one knee and proposed. I said yes(of course)!

Actually I proposed to him :) It was unplanned too. We were out visiting his Grandparents, and they had been taking us all over town telling us romantic stories about dating and getting married. So we found ourselves going to bed every night talking about what we would be like together at that age. I keep this happy memory sketchbook its small and follows me every where. So when he went to get us water one night I dug it out of my bag and did a quick drawing with the question "Will you marry me?" When he came back up I showed him the book that I had been keeping saying that I thought he might find it interesting. Ben flipped through it and when he got to the last page he snuggled in next to me in bed and whispered yes into my ear. I was the most amazing answer to anything I have ever received. I can't wait for our journey to being old and gray and still as happy as his grandparents are.
I'm doing this for me, and no one else.

We were on an Alaskan cruise (two weeks ago today). We had just gotten back to the ship after a shore excursion of ziplining in Ketchikan and were wandering around the top deck in the rain. He pointed to something behind me and said 'look at that!' and when I turned back to him he had his grandmother's ring out and asked me if I would marry him :)

I'm going to veterinary school in Edinburgh, Scotland, and my fiance lives and works in San Diego, California. We met in sophomore year of undergrad, and have been together for 6 years, 2 of those being mostly long-distance when I lived back home for a year after undergrad, and my first year here in vet school (I'm in my 3rd year). Last year he came and did a Masters degree in Edinburgh and it was wonderful having him around, again. We had had some trouble during my first year here, with the stress of school as well as everything being novel and exciting for me and his life being pretty "status quo;" we weren't really in the same place in life for a while.
Anyway, mid-November he returned for a 10-day visit (after working back in San Diego since his program ended in September) for his graduation ceremony. He had asked to look at engagement rings online before he left, and since being home had made more reference to the future/babies/weddings, etc. than he usually does on his own, so I was suspicious that a proposal was imminent. But, I promised myself that I was just going to live in the moment and enjoy all the time I could get with him, without thinking about/expecting/being disappointed if he didn't propose on any given visit here/home.
The night he arrived, he was wearing a new suit he had gotten and told me about, and looked very handsome! But, he arrived in the later evening and we had to leave really early the next morning to go to London for a fancy birthday party for a friend, so we just went back to my flat where my roommates had ordered from a favorite Indian restaurant and our take-out meal was waiting for us. We ate, watched TV, sat on the couch with my legs on his lap, and I was just completely happy enjoying his company and feeling like we could just settle into "normal" routine things together. When he's gone, I especially miss the low-key, everyday little things we can't even share together! My roommates went to bed and I was painting my fingernails with French tips in preparation for the party the next night. I painted my left-hand, first, as I'm naturally right-handed, and when I was done, I asked, "See! Aren't they pretty?"
He saw his moment, and said, "I bet I can make them even prettier." He got down on one knee right there in the living room, in his pajama bottoms, jet-lagged and all, refusing to go to bed before me, pulled the ring out and asked, "Will you marry me?" I was completely caught off-guard, got all flustered and felt like I had lost my breath! As soon as I looked up into his nervous, expectant face, though, I knew the only answer was "YES!"
We kept it secret for the weekend so as not to steal the birthday thunder, and it was SO HARD not to tell anyone! But it was also really special to have that secret to ourselves and just smile from ear to ear whenever we caught each others' eye! We Skyped my parents when we got back from the weekend, before telling all our friends!
It was perfect - if he had planned a big night out, or made a bigger to-do out of it, I would have been expecting it because he doesn't tend to just plan surprise fancy dinners, or weekends away, or anything like that. I was just completely happy and in-the-moment, and the idea of a proposal was nowhere near crossing my mind, and so I was surprised, as I should be! He later said that he wanted me to be surprised, so he knew he should be surprised as to when/how it would happen, too, so he just waited with it in his pocket until he saw the perfect moment. He did, I said yes, and now we're engaged!

Awww I love reading proposal stories! Everyone's is sooo sweet!!
Here's mine, a little different, but it fits us really well:
My fiance l had booked us a trip to Soaring Eagle casino for Valentines weekend, so I assumed we would celebrate the holiday that weekend because we both worked on Valentines day and I had class that evening. Well he decided he wanted to go to the shooting range for a few hours before class. I was really excited to go, but never imagined him doing anything romantic there! We first started to set up and suddenly I saw Paul frantically looking through our gun bag. He quickly ran out of the room and was gone for a few minutes. When he came back he said he had forgot a part to his gun and shrugged off my question. I didn't really think anything of it other than it was weird. We were shooting for two hours and were having a lot of fun when Paul decided to set up the range at 15 yards for me, which I had never done before. I was really excited and he coached me through it, but then said he would step back while I shot a few clips. I shot really well which just made me even more excited, but when I turned around, he wasn't there. I looked out of the booth to check the one to the right of me but he wasn't there. Then I noticed everyone in the range had stepped out of their booths and were smiling at me. I was at a complete loss as to what was going on until I looked to the booth to the left, and there he was down on one knee! I barely remember much after that because I started crying and shaking so bad but I do remember him saying "Mickayla, will you marry me?' and he said I nodded a lot after that.
When I had finally calmed down later at dinner he told me that the proposal didn’t actually go as planned. The first issue was when we first got to the shooting range. Paul had run out to the car because he went to feel the ring in his pocket and it was gone! Before we came in he had changed his shoes in the car and apparently when he did the ring fell in between the seat and the door. I was very surprised he hid his panic so well because I had no idea! The second problem came when I started shooting because I started out pretty poorly. His plan had been to tape the ring to the upper corner of the target on the back where I would find it when I pulled my target off. Unfortunately when I wasn’t doing my best he was afraid I would somehow hit it and the ring would be destroyed. It was really sweet to hear how hard he had tried to propose, but in the end I wouldn't change a single thing he did.

My story isn't your typical preplanned, gotta have it just right story. In April, I was actually in a bad car accident. I was in the hospital for a week, and in rehab (nursing home) for the next two weeks. It was the first week there... I was feeling horrible (LOTS of broken bones) and sad and he was sitting next to my bed holding my hand. And at some point we started talking about "us" and life and second chances and it eventually progressed to us telling the other how in love we were, how happy we were... (insert a LOT of mushiness here), and he said... I was going to do this better, but it's such a perfect moment" and then he asked me to marry him. It was so sweet. And I really liked that he went with his emotions.

July 6th, 2011 -- Ryan, my fiancé (i love saying that), had told me that he was planning a date night for us, but would not tell me any details. We were in town visiting his family for the 4th of July. All I knew was that our date night would be at "The Plaza" in Kansas City, MO. The first time I had gone there, I had fallen in love with the place, so he decided it would be perfect. It started the day before, when he sent me shopping with his mom (I love bonding time) for a dress to match his suit. I found the most perfect dress AND shoes to match. Everything was awesome. The next day (date night-day) he sent me to get all made up. Spa day, anyone!?! I was in heaven. He always does amazing things like this for me, so I didnt think anything of it. That night, he took me out to dinner at Plaza III, the fanciest restaurant in all of Kansas City. It was perfect. We each had steak and shared our sides. Finished our meal with a Grand Marnier Soufflé. After Dinner we had an hour before our next reservation, which was still a surprise for me. We took a walk around the beautiful area, seeing the different fountains that The Plaza is known for. Time flew and it was getting dark. We started walking to our final destination. It was all set up, a graceful and romantic glide down the relaxing waterway in an elegant Venetian style Gondola. As we were drinking our sparkling cidar and enjoying our time together, the Gondolier spoke. "There is something floating in the water, would you mind picking it up for me. - We like to help keep the water clean" This was a little strange to me, but none the less Ryan reached over the boat and out of the water he pulled a beautifully decorated bottle that appeared to have a letter in it. He popped the cork and took out the letter. I began to cry as he started to read. After he finished the letter, he got on one knee (yes, in the little gondola) and asked me "will you marry me?" all I could say was "of course!" It was the most romantic, special night of my life. I am so very happy to be able to say, I get to grow old with the man of my dreams.
Oooh fun topic! FI proposed on a weekend getaway in October. We had been together for 6 years and had several talks about our future, where we saw things going, and had discussed general timelines for when we'd like to get married, buy a house, start a family, etc. Plus he had taken me to look at rings months earlier, so I knew it was coming, it was just a question of when/how.
He told me that we hadn't been able to get away just the two of us that year, and that he felt we really needed a weekend getaway. I had just gotten back from a 2-week trip to the Czech Republic with my mom (he wasn't able to join us on the trip due to work), so I was a little hesitant to take additional time off work so soon for a long weekend. But he was pretty insistent that we "needed" this time away. I said ok, and he made all the plans, but wouldn't tell me where we were going. That's when I started to suspect that this might be the weekend he popped the question. In the 6 years we'd been together, I've done ALL our vacation planning.
He had rented a BEAUTIFUL house right on the lake in upstate NY, about a half hour away from where I went to college. He knows how much I love it up there because I talk about it all the time. So we'd wake up early in the mornings, make some coffee, and go fishing off our private dock. Then we'd hike, tour the numerous vineyards in the area, and come back and enjoy a nice bonfire before heading out to dinner. He really couldn't have planned it better- it was what I consider an ideal weekend, being outdoors, enjoying nature and some good wine! All weekend long, he kept getting calls and texts from people, which was odd and a little annoying since everyone knew we'd be away. It turns out that everyone knew he'd be proposing, the suspense was killing them so they kept calling and texting to ask him if he'd done it yet!
He ended up proposing on our last evening at the house. He had planned to do it sooner, but he wanted to do it at sunset. And the Friday we got there it was pouring out, and Saturday we ended up doing so many activities that we came back to the house after sunset. So on Sunday, we went for a nice relaxing hike then came back to the house to open a bottle of wine, start a bonfire and watch the sunset. We were having such a beautiful time, so I thanked him for the "perfect" weekend. So he turned to me, and reaching into his pocket, said, perfect weekend huh? How about we make this a truly perfect weekend? Then he got on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked me to marry him. It was the most beautiful, romantic moment. Then we just sat enjoying the sunset on the dock before going out to a lovely dinner in the town I went to college, where we walked around and I got to show him some of my favorite spots in town. I was in such a blissful little bubble, I truly didn't want to come back home to real life. But every time I think about it, like right now, I just bask in the memory of that weekend all over again. :)
