susan...I'd go with a good carb/ protein snack or light meal and a large glass of water.... I interprete the no carbs after noon as no overly processed carbs...Hope this helps!

I have a question on #7: I workout after work, so what would I eat before a 4-6 mile run if I am not to eat carbs after noon?

I put them up in my kitchen to remind me when I am there of the rules. It does help. My son who is struggling with his weight was at my house last weekend and read them and said he needed to follow them.

Martine I agree! That's why I chose the Rules. I have been moving towards this way of eating for a long time. Clean, less processed. It fits my lifestyle with the guidance I need.

Will 'weigh' in on Tuesday.......with actual weight and a 'weigh in' on the Skinny Rule plan and how it's working for me. I am pleased after reading the book with the simplicity....and it seems to be a 'life' friendly plan. Other plans have been so off the wall...food wise..and rule wise..... I have a tendency to think that if I break a rule then all bets are off....trying not to be so hard on myself......making food changes are most difficult for me. I already eat healthy.....but eat too many desserts and sweets....I like sugar but my body just doesn't metabolize like it used to....

emoticon Happy to report I have been back on track with THE RULES since Sunday and yes!....certainly feel 100+ % better!

Been processed junk free, plenty of water and no carbs after lunch since Saturday and this afternoon.... emoticon ...noticed I am less achy, brain fog is clearing.... I even 'feel lighter' but am seriously trying not to weigh in until Friday.

So you would think I would REMEMBER how sliding back into the junk mode drags me down hey???

Hopefully will keep this round moving full steam ahead!

Hope you are having a great over-the-hump day!

I do the same thing - "closed" after dinner, and that part is going surprisingly well--but I still want something sweeter at the end, even if I'm eating it just at the end of dinner. I'm okay with fruit once in a while after dinner though. Funny, some days I miss dessert, some days I miss starchy carbs with dinner. Likely that's why I'm in the position of needing to loose so much weight! But hey, it's coming off slowly and regularly now. Thanks for the reminder and support. And yes - it DOES make me look forward to breakfast!

I try to tell myself the kitchen is 'closed' after dinner but when the rest of the family goes on the prowl for an evening snack it is hard to stay out of there...so at times an apple is a safe option....but, I'm trying to go to bed 'hungry'....and look forward to a healthy breakfast to start the day instead.

Thanks Debbie. I've done that too on days I haven't gotten my apple in, like yesterday. I try mostly not to do that, since my brain is so hardwired to want something sweet after dinner, and I'd really like to break that habit. It used to be a 'carb-smart' ice cream bar - but no more! I think I'll use it as a sometimes-treat instead of part of my plan for the most part.

kate-- I interpret the no carbs after lunch rule to mean no STARCHY carbs as well and have an apple in the evenings when needing a 'snack' after dinner or mid-afternoon, but I combine it with yogurt dip or peanut butter to pair it with a bit of protein as well...

This is going to sound like a dumb question - but chime in anyway folks. I'm doing well on the Skinny Rules, but am wondering about the No Carbs after Lunch one; can I still have fruit with dinner? I know they have carbs in them, but he only talks about starchy carbs in the book in that chapter if I recall correctly. I'm guessing 'Lean and Green' means no--but it's really hard to get the full amount of fiber in without that. Anyone?

Jen -- I am far from 'perfect' on the rules but sure can tell a difference when I am paying attention to them! Not just because the scales goes in the right direction, but the energy level soars and mood/ attitude with life in general is better!!! :)

I'm a highlighter and a notemaker too! And thanks for reminding me about the Are You Ready book as well ... going to go put a request in at the library for that one right now :)
I'm going to try to start following some of the Skinny Rules tomorrow ... wish me luck, I'm probably going to need it, lol!

Jen-- I also have Bob's first book ARE YOU READY and still re-read it!! Everytime I do, I get something else from it...so I have my copy of Skinny Rules as well because when a book hits home with me, I tend to make notes in the margins and highlight things in it!!!

The no carbs after lunch is hard for me to do all the time, but when I do, I like the scales much better!

Most of these sound pretty doable ... I'll have the most trouble with breakfast I think. Actually no carbs after lunch might be kind of tough too but I've been wanting to do that for awhile now anyway ... but it might make getting 30-50 grams of fiber in a lot harder if they can't be carbs after lunch :/
Can't wait till I get the book ... might just have to go out and buy it because I'm still 3rd in line for it from the library and I don't know if I can wait that long, lol!

His book is good. I found eating a meat free day including no yogurt or egg whites. I ended up eating more calories to get enough.
That doesn't work for me. I don't eat regular meat anyway.
I can skip chicken fish turkey.
Nuts and seeds are for the birds and squirrels.
BP2 is good for a lunch protein. beans. How many beans can i eat. Tofu looks gross to me, I would try it if it wasn't so expensive and i may not like it and throw it out.
So anyway. It isn't the only weight loss plan or book ever written.
Every other rule i pretty much was doing anyway. I like his other book better.

oh man, I finally understand the rule about salt! I went to the local taqueria with my friends tonight for dinner (no drinks, ha!) and chose a totally reasonable, healthy seeming chicken salad. All it had was grilled chicken, black beans, pico de gallo, romaine, and a little chipotle sauce. I logged everything and it was calorically sound too - but man, what a salt bomb! I have been feeling lethargic and bloated ever since, ugh! I'm so paying more attention to that rule now - doing pretty well on all the others, except the water one, I'm terrible with water :(

It is in most definitions...though technically a true 'white potatoe' is different...they are close enough to be 'kissin' cousin' I think....LOL

Is a baked Russet potato a white potato?

I had boxes of oodles and noodles,Ramen noodles/soup, tuna helper, rice a roni, pasta, Zatarains Rice, graham cracker crust mix, stove top stuffing, canned cranberry sauce, soups, some other boxed stuff, all processed, loaded with salt /preservatives. All unopened.
I gave them to the food pantry at the Church along with bags of clothes that got way to big for me. That is a good feeling.
i had high blood pressure, eliminating those boxed/salty processed foods along with exercise lowered it and now i dont' have to take BP meds. That is a good feeling too.

I get the 93% lean and really watch it when you cook it as overcooking even by a minute or two can dry it out quickly...also I sometimes add more veggies such as chopped onion and/ or bell peppers to mine, not only do you get a little bigger meatball if that is what you are using it for, but the veggies add moisture to them too...

Just wondering what kind of ground Turkey everyone is buying? The 93% lean or 99% extra lean? I have been buying the extra lean but it dries out fast and is double the price of the lean

I'm making progress on these rules and cutting out the processed crappola and carbs after lunch has really helped do away with the evening cravings!!!!

LOL ...yup Yukon Gold (I think) is in the white potato category but I admit white potatoes are not banned in my house just used selectively...LOL

Apples and Berries are my favorite rule as well!!!

The apple and berries is my favorite rule.
No carbs after lunch is easy.
I got no eating after dinner and go to bed 3-4 hours after I finish eating.

I also stopped a very bad habit old habit of late night snacking, waking up midnight snacking. Eating /finishing dinner 3 hours before bedtime.
It was hard at first . The first couple weeks.i'd wake up and want a snack, just out of habit. i'd go pee, say NO tomyself and go back to sleep.
Now i broke the habit. i am so happy.
it has made a BIG difference. Dr.Oz said don't eat 3 hours before bed.
It works, it really does.

Penny -- My huge change has been in not eating in the evenings after dinner and following the no carbs after lunch rule but the scales is really liking these changes,,,I am also working on breaking the step on the scales every day habit because for me it was driving me bonkers...does ONE meal REALLY = an 'instant' 3# gain...??? Those type of crazy fluctuations have me obsessing....LOL..so the past few weeks since working Bob's Rules I've only been weighing in on Saturdays...I'm looking for a good loss this week based on foods and 'feeling lighter' but we shall see...!!!

Sounds like you are on the right track...keep up the awesome work!!!

Debbie,
Thankx. I don't have to have fish. Also I don't eat red meat.
For protein I can have Canellini or lentil beans, the greek yogurt for protein for 2 meals.
could I have 2 tbsp. of peanut butter for a protein for a meal? what else is a non meat protein for a meals protein?

I do like one diet soda after dinner. Otherwise I don''t use artificial sweeteners. i have heard they do make us crave sweets more.

I drink herbal tea or black coffee in morning for a wake up.

berries after dinner is what I have been having, or apple so that works out just perfect

With breakfast for fruit i usually have 1/2 banana,or a mango or a whole grapefruit or orange.

I have the frozen foods in freezer as a back up. But 99 % of the time I cook my own fresh food. When i buy turkey . I buy 99 % thin sliced lower sodium Hillshire farms turkey.
ball Park fat free turkey hotdogs I only have once or twice a month. Lunch is usually salad with either tuna or the sliced turkey.

Thanks for the help. I still want the diet soda as a closure for the day. After dinner/7-7:30 PM i don't eat/drink anything at all until next day at breakfast.

Good-morning Penny!

Welcome again to the team, glad to see you jumping in!

Rule #7 - No carbs after lunch, my interpretation of this this is no starchy and/ or processed carbs (potatoes, bread, rice and so on) after lunch since Bob says 'lean & green' should be our plan for dinner...veggies are good and fruits I'm thinking limited to your apple or berries.

Rule #10 - Bob is agains added sweetners in any shape and yes, that includes diet sodas...Do you know there are several valid studies showing artificial sweetners may actually cause us to GAIN weight because they trigger our cravings for more sweet food since they are way sweeter than a natural sugar? ....

Rule 12 - One meatless day/ week...yes, fish is included in the 'meat' category, but if you must have meat at every meal, fish would be better than a higher fat option.

Rule 14 -- Sounds like a real breakfast to me!...To me a 'real breakfast includes a lean protien, good carbs and fiber...so sure I think you choice here hits all those areas especially if the fruit with your yogurt = berries!

Rule 16 .. Not all hotdogs, frozen foods are created equal...read labels and choose the lowest sodium options, as a general rule process foods/ frozen foods are high in sodium.

Have a great weekend!
Debbie

Thanks for the rules.
i have a few questions...
Rule #7. No carbs after lunch.Does fruit and vegetables count as carbs?

Rule #10. Added sweeteners/ Does that include 1-2 diet sodas a day?

Rule # 12, Make one day meatless/ Does that include fish?

Rule #14. eat real breakfast/ Is fatfree plain greek yogurt, 2 OZ of milled flax seed and a fruit considered a REAL breakfast?

Rule # 16. Banish high salt foods/ Does that include Fat free turkey hordogs, Smart Ones frozen dinners, Boca burgers, and Morningstar vegetarian frozen products?

the rest of the rules i got down pat..Rule #20 is my favorite. i did that today after weigh in. emoticon

Any and all answers will be greatly appreciated. Thannx. emoticon

I think the calorie range would be more negotiable according to your age/ hieght/ goal weight. Plus everyone responds differently....how does your body feel are you noticing more or less energy? and so forth...though that amount (65-80) is low according to Bob's guidelines it is on the higher end of most recommended protein ranges.

Another factor determining how much protein we need is activity level....if you are exercising consistently you would need more protein and calories than if you are only exercising occasionally...does that make sense??

Welcome to the team!!!

Is anyone else having problems getting in enough protein. As a woman, he doesn't want us to have over 1200 calories a day. I am eating around 1200, and getting in 65-80 grams of protein. I am not hungry, and I am "supposed" to have 125 grams of protein given my weight.

What do you think is better; sticking within the calorie range or eating more protein?

Thanks!

I'm so glad to find this forum. I started The Skinny Rules 5 days ago and have already lost almost 6 pounds. It may be water weight, but that's weight, too. This book is exactly what I have been looking for. It's uncomplicated and serious. In my house, it's called the Get Real Diet. And that's exactly what I kept saying to myself all day yesterday. I was sleep deprived and nervous, having gotten up at 4:30 a.m. to put my 17-year-old son on a plane for Europe. All day I just wanted to fall back on the old comforts of carbs and sugar. But, I kept repeating to myself, "Get real. If you want to lose weight for good, this is what it's going to take." So, I drank lots of water, gorged myself on steamed vegetables, and went to bed wanting (hungry). I was rewarded this morning by seeing the scale drop below a very round number that I haven't been able to crack for the past 6 months. As I try to learn and internalize the 20 rules, I am following the Week 1 meal plan. It makes following the plan as I adjust very easy. Thanks for creating a spot where I can go for support.

19. Sleep Right

20. Plan one splurge MEAL per week

According to the information in Bob's book, by going to bed hungry we will start to burn fat for the energy needed to supply energy for all the good stuff that happens at night ( cell restoration) end so forth...

Also- Stop and take a honest look at what we usually end up eating late at night...sugar, salt, fats are all part of the usual night time munchies cravings aren't they? ( At least that's is what I go for late at night)

Bob suggest working into this step by going to bed hungry one or two nights per week this first month if you just cannot break the night time eatting...

Ask yourself before that night time snack...

Are you REALLY hungry? Or bored? Or tired??

Much of the time I find myself looking for 'something' to munch on when I REALLY just need some SLEEP!!!....LOL

Rule #18 Go to be hungry!.....can you elaborate? I always seem to be hungry when I am in bed at night watching TV or trying to go to sleep. Sometimes I get up and get a snack, I guess this is a bad idea. Of course there are times I feel like eating because I am bored or just as snacking while watching TV, but I try not to give into those urges; but when I honestly feel hungry I have something.

Nanc- That is fantastic that the change in when and what type of carbs you eat in the evening is making a healthy change in your blood sugar levels and less insulin is needed!!! emoticon

That is what I understand too Debbie.

As a diabetic, I was wondering about that, but it has worked and I have already started reducing my insulin intake per day. : ) I didn't think it would work that way, but it does.

The eating every 3 hours works to keep your blood sugars more even and your metabolism burning well.

Yes- I think he prefers it to be veggies only as the natural occuring sugars in fruit late in the day raises blood sugar enough to set off those evening cravings that a lot of us deal with.

His plan calls for limiting the fruits except for daily apples and berries for the first month and then trying to have them earlier in the day with 'lean and gree' the choices for after 2 PM..

(At least, that is my interpretation after reading his comments on starting the 30 day menu plan)...

Anyone else have thoughts on this???

Hi Nanc- I do read fast, but have not gotten my book from my daughter yet...LOL. I tend to read any book thru cover to cover then go back and 'digest it' by re-reading and highlighting it....

I think that is the point of the 'Rules' to simplify our foods and so the recipes and menus reflect that.

I am excited about it and Cindy and I are both working at putting all 20 rules in place!

I've glanced at my copy a time or two but my daughter has been reading it and is nearly finished with it so I'll probably get to read it by Monday and expect to pretty much finish it in one sitting then go back and have a closer look at the menus and recipes. Cindy has already been say yumm this sounds good and this sounds good...LOL

I did get my copy today and have already started reading it. : ) I will love the 30 day menu for sure. Even if the guys don't want to do it all they will want to eat the dinners I make. lol : )

Here's hoping my old body can ajust to doing things the right way after many years of the WRONG way!

I love how he decided to do this book. So awesome! You just have to love the man. He is always helping people.

Blessings,
Nanc

emoticon Hello Nanc- Welcome back!!!

Yes- If I didn't already have the book, I'd buy it simply because I love Bob!! LOL....but in the book there is a 30 month menu plan and tips on how to 'ease into some of the rules that may be harder than others to follow.

Hope to see you back in here regularly!....( good-luck on the 'all men' household.... emoticon )....LOL

Thanks for sharing the 20 rules with us. : ) Still buying the book though. I love Bob!

I'm with you and your daughter, veg would be the way to go. But since I now live with all men (including 2 grandsons) NOT going to happen anytime soon. lol

The hardest one for me will be No carbs after lunch. :o I donít get done with exercising until 1 or 2 and need a recovery snack. Still dealing with diabetic issues I am suppose to have a carb & protein @ every meal. I think it will be doable but need to read about it too.

Easy peasy Ė drinking water before the meal. I drink water all the time so no issues there.

I see where Bob has a new Yoga tape out now. Guess I will be getting that too. : )

Thanks for the push to get back to it.
Before Mom went home to Jesus she made me promise to get back to the gym and take care of myself. I did it for the first time today. Yeah!

Have a great evening everyone!
Blessings,
Nanc

My top 3 hardest ones would be: Going to bed hungry, no fastfood/fried foods, no carbs after lunch (the worst)! The easiest....not drinking your calories. I don't drink juice/coffee/pop/ or tea so this one is easy for me! I do drink milk but I like to think it's not as bad since it has some protein. I only drink red wine maybe once every few months and juice maybe a couple times a month or less. Thanks for sharing! I have rented this book from the library so just waiting for it to come in:)
