Hello fellow penguins!

I am doing the slowest C25K program ever. If I actually tried to do it in 9 weeks, I'd blow out my knees, or give myself some other injury. So I started week 1 back in October. I'm hoping by the end of January to progress to week 2.

It's slow, but at least I'm moving!

I'm a waddler for sure! Especially since my fall on the ice in March that broke my leg. I started walking again recently. Yesterday I went about 1 1/2 miles and jogged 3 intervals of 20 seconds each. Yes, 20 seconds. I'm back where I was 3 years ago when I first started trying to jog. I hadn't heard of waddling, so I called it "wogging" (walking + jogging). I look like I'm about 90 years old, taking such teensy steps, with my feet hardly leaving the ground. ;-)
But my goal is to return to the Mother's Day 5K in 2014 that I had to sit out this year, so I'm going to keep waddling!

I am a waddler - so slow - I've been running/waddling for 7 weeks - and still feel like I"m pretty slow. I just think it may take a bit of patience. I'm the turtle and not the hare.

I am definently a waddler. I am going to check out the website asap. Today I did D2 W5 of Spark People Rookie Running Program, and its the 1st time I've went over 2 miles. People are running past me on the bike trail, but I just keep telling myself not to feel bad because I am out there moving.

I can absolutely relate. My fastest run speed is 4.2 or 4.3. Eventually I hope to get faster as the weight starts to come off. I fell out of running in December so trying to build my intervals back up. This week I'm finally running longer than walking during my 5 minute intervals. Keep up the great work!

I belong here! I am definitely a waddler. I am doing the C25K on the treadmill and my fastest run speed is 4.0. Now that is a WADDLE. I hope to work my way up to 5.0, then 6.0. I am still over 220lbs and I don't want to push myself too much. I am just proud of myself for finishing each workout because I remember when week 1 was very hard for me. emoticon emoticon

Ah ha! I have finally found my people. I didn't know there was a name for us. I have "run" (waddled is really a better word) on and off (mostly off) for the past 8 years. I am just starting again after 1 year of not doing much but recovering from surgery and gaining weight. Looking forward to meeting other newbies.

Hey everyone!!!

I am gonna keep posting to this thread until we get people to come check it out:);)

Waddling is definitely slow running - and we all start as waddlers....check out John Bingham's site..http://www.waddle-on.com/

Welcome to all new runners, and I really hope that this thread gets up and going again. It used to be super active, and I just think people have forgotten about it.

Hugs,
Trish

Hi everyone! I'm new to this group but was so happy to see this page. I'm definately slow when it comes to running, and it's great to be able to talk with others who understand. I'm still doing alot of walk/runs but did the SP Trick or Treat Trot 5K and ran the whole way in about 50 min. On Thanksgiving morning I'm doing a 2 mile Turkey Trot and hoping to finish in under 30 minutes. I loved the SP quote that said "A 15 minute mile or a 7 minute mile, it's still a mile". That is so me and helps keep me motivated.

I hope more people come to this team b/c I need all of you! I ran my first 5K this weekend and proved my Penguin status. I did it in 38 minutes and my goal was to meet the 65+ people that were around me. I thought it was awesome that they were running at that age and can only hope to continue for that long. But I'm hoping to improve my time by working on it.

I am a total penguin! I'm on Week 7 of my C25K, and my pace this morning was just over 13mm. I'm running my first 5k in September and I don't have a time goal--just want to finish and not have to walk at all.

Ha this is where I belong!!! New to this group but running about a year and a half. My first 10 mile race was in May and the goal was to run the whole time. I did with an average pace of 13.5 min/mile. Working on getting faster but my goals are always to run a race without walking. I can do a 11 min mile but cannot sustain that pace for more than 2 and a half miles. Looks like a lot of progress for folks on here. Keep up the good work!!!

Hello Fellow Penguins! I just started the 1st Day to 5K program on Monday Ė Coach Jenny Hadfieldís plan put to music by DJ Beatsmith. I have tried to work my way through it before but always quit about four weeks into it because I get terrible shin splints. This time I am starting slower and my goal is an actual 5k Ė as opposed to a marathon. I have walked three half marathons and had planned on doing a full marathon but didnít want to unless I ran it. Not that thereís any shame in walking a marathon, mind you. Itís just that it took me a good 5 hours just to walk 16 miles once and the idea of having to spend that amount of time every weekend to train wasnít appealing.

Iím really glad to have found this team. Iím looking forward to sharing the journey with you.

I'm so glad I found this group. Before, I felt like if I didn't have the treadmill on AT LEAST 6 mph, I shouldn't bother. Today...I waddled at 5.5 and was able to go much longer. Then, after my "official" 5K rookie training workout, I even waddled at 4.5...which is slower than I used to walk. But it felt GOOD, to be getting my feet off the ground...better than walking at 4 mph.

Thanks for making me realize there are no magic numbers...just the ones that push us and the ones that make us feel good!

Hi everyone. This topic sounds like it's just my speed. I have one of John Bingham's books waiting to be picked up at the library. Can't wait to read it. I just started running in April. Did the 5k plan on here and am now working on the 10k plan. I may be slow, but I persevere!

Looking forward to getting to know you guys. =)

Hey that's a GREAT idea! I've just started running (earlier this week - I lasted a whole block!!! LOL GO me!!) I have been walking to and from Starbucks on a nearly daily basis (and that is about a half mile each way) and I was trying to decide what to do as that becomes more comfortable. I like the idea of going to the mall and window shopping for inspiration!!
Thanks for the idea!!

Anyone home?

HI! I'm Kimberly... I love John Bingham's book and I am SUCH a penguin!!

I just did my first 5k since 2007 this past weekend. I started training the week before and fought the incredible urge/temptation to back out because I hadn't gotten myself into the right mind set. The race was exactly what I needed and gave me the boost my brain needed to quiet that inner voice that was saying I couldn't do it!

My knees are terrible, so I'm going to baby them and walk at least 2 miles a day, so my goal is to get to 200# and then start the actual Couch to 5K program. So far, so GREAT! Since I re-started my journey a week, I've dropped 8 pounds!

This morning it was raining and my park wasn't option, so instead of stay home, I went to the mall and that was quite the experience! The cute clothes on all the manequins were so inspirational! WOOT!!

How is everyone doing?

HI Penguins...
I just saw this and thought I'd check it out - and I love it! It is me perfectly!

I am currently needing motivation to keep running... I have never been able to run in the winter (no gym, not coordinated on ice... don't like the dark), but we bought a treadmill in October to keep me going this year. Now I just need my motivation back!

Anyway, I don't have any races on the horizon - too much snow/ice around here until at least March, but my goal for the winter is to work on increasing my speed by doing C25K again (at a faster pace) and then following that by the Bridge to 10K program come spring... then a 1/2 marathon program when that is done - finishing with our local 1/2 marathon in late July.

I did the 1/2 marathon this last summer and finished under 3 hours - which I was very proud of.

Any great ideas for maintain motivation?? I love to have a race to "make" me go run... but with 3-4 months until the next one, the need is just not immediate enough to get me moving! lol

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit. ~Aristotle~

Chris, JASR is 03/31/12. They have 5K, 8.1 mile, 1/2 marathon and 30K distances. Registration is now open. There is also a SP Team and a lot of SP that are running are trying to get in the same hotel with a meeting room for socializing before and after the race. Sure hope you can make it!

Shari, when is the JASR? I'm tossing around the idea of doing it, but would have to give up another race that I always do, since I work weekends. Can't have them all off! But I think it would be really neat to meet all the other Spark People!

Way to go on the 10K's Chris and Carolyn!
Carolyn, I am hoping to run the Hot Chocolate 15K in DC next year - not quite ready for this year and the 5K is already full. Looks like fun and nothing beats a chocolate reward at the finish!

Chris, I am slowly increasing my mileage also as I signed up for the 8.1 mile run (JASR) at the end of March in Pittsburgh and plan to sign up for a half in September or October. Did 4 yesterday and hope to do 4 again tomorrow or Sunday.

Marathonmom, it was a fabulous 5K! There was an issue on the course (semi stuck under an overpass right before the race was supposed to start) so they had to re-route the 5K. My time was 36:05, which I was super happy with. Then I found out that the course was actually LONGER than 3.1 miles, so my adjusted time for the 5K portion was 34:24....my best time by over 4 minutes! And the chocolate - so, so yummy!

Great job on the time for the 10K!! I'm really impressed with that!!

Hot chocolate and fondue - now that's worth running for!! How did the 5K go, Mommy? My friend and I are looking at the Chicago Marathon in 2014. Heard it was a good first one.

I did the virtual 10K last week also, time of 1:09:22. I would love to see that go under an hour, but I think that's a long way off! My next race is a 10K on Thanksgiving day. Hoping to beat my Trick or Treat Trot time!

Shari, you ran the whole 6.2!!! Wow, wasn't that long ago that you were trying to run a whole 5K. Look how far you've come! You'll be under 35 before you know it!

Well, I'm off to run 4. Increasing my weekly milage again, this time getting ready for the Disney Half in January!! Waddle On, penguins!

That's great Shari!

Fellow penguin here :) . I've got several 5Ks under my belt, and did my first 10K last weekend. I ended up with a time of 1:12:24, so my pace was about 11:40/mile. I was so happy with that! I have a 5K tomorrow in Chicago...nice flat course, followed by Ghiradelli hot chocolate and fondue at the finish :) .

Ran the Trick or Trot virtual 10K here on SP. Was able to run the whole 6.2 mile distance with no walking! Official time 87 minutes and 5 seconds - definitely still a Penguin but very happy that I could run the entire 10K!

Welcome River331! I can relate, I have only been running for about 6 months and the first 5K I ran the whole way was just over 45 minutes, but like you my goal was only to run the whole way! Last Saturday was the 1st 5K I ran below 40 minutes. I run mostly for fitness and the races help keep me motivated so needless to say I am very pleased with where I am at this point.
My next goals are running 8.1 mile run at the end of March and a 1/2 marathon in September.

Hello fellow Spark peeps! I'm a rookie runner, just going into week 7 training, and I was thrilled to see this thread since I am a sloooooow runner. Yesterday I did a 1 mile in 15 minutes and even though I wasn't trying to race, I was working. Currently I'm focusing on jogging for the whole 5k distance rather than speed, but I also notice that as my legs get stronger, I can push off better with the balls of my feet and get a little more distance in the stride. I look forward to reading back through here and meeting some of you! emoticon

This then is life: how curious! How real! Underfoot the divine soil, overhead the sun. W.Whitman

Good job Brittany! Way to keep at it! You can do it!

Welcome NewbornBella! Just keep with it and it will get easier! I only have about 6 months running experience so far and it is always hard to get started but I start enjoying my run between 1/4 and 1/2 in.

Fellow penguin . Also doing a run/walk program . The 5k your way walk/jog program. Started last week and so far so good. Its hard getting myself out there though. Hard to believe I used to run track and cross-country in highschool. Now I am lucky if I can run for five minutes without having to stop. Made a goal to run a marathon by the time I am 40. Thats 61/2 yrs from now so I think I have some time. emoticon

Still waddling! I fell down some stairs this morning but still managed to get in 2 miles. Bright red face and wobbly legs but I'm feeling good!

AWESOME Carrie!

WOOHOO! I am excited new PR! Ran the Vampire 5K in 38:41. Helped that the race walker from a previous PR was there also and I paced off him for the 1st 2 miles then I passed him! My new goal was to get below 40 min but was not expecting below 39 min. I guess I need to aim to get below 35 min sometime in the not too distant future.

Hooray Penguins!

I ran a 5K last weekend and started out with a mile 1 time of 9:13. Holy moly! I did NOT keep it up through the whole race and ended up with a time of 37:06. I'll take it!

I can't believe it but even with the hills had another personal best by 6 seconds! Finished in 41:07. My next goal is to get below 40 min. I was the last runner but got a 1st in my age group as I was the only runner in that group. Total of 29 runners and about 40 walkers that did the same course, unfortunately they started the walkers 5-6 minutes after the runners so I couldn't pace off one of them. Only problem was the 1st leg was 1 lap around a H.S. Track and even running much faster than I usually do for that lap was way behind the pack and really got out of breath, took about a half mile to settle my breathing down and just relax into my pace.

I think it helps to pace off of someone. I have never actually followed a Jeff Galloway plan but I guess what I've done is very similar. Started out walking, then adding in running, increasing the running and decreasing the walking. I just ran 7.5 Monday w/o stopping. Takes a while to build up to, but it's possible! Keep me up on your progress if you decide to do it. I've done several half marathons but have never run the entire thing. That's one of my goals!

Good luck on the hills. I have found that even though they're tougher, the 5K's w/ some hills are, for some strange reason, more fun! Did a bunch of those over the summer. Now I'm not so afraid of hills! Let us know how it goes on Saturday!

Chris, it was a 3rd place trophy. I was so fortunate because there was a race walker right in front of me and I stayed about 25 yards behind him and helped me keep a steady pace, also helped that it was a pretty flat course.
My next 5K is a Memorial run this Saturday, I have heard rumors that there are some pretty nasty hills on this one!
I am thinking about switching to the JG training plan. While I can run right now about 3.5 miles w/o stopping, I want to do a half marathon next year and I also want to stay injury free and continue to run for many years to come.

Ran another PR this morning at a 5K. Finished in 41:13, which is 1:49 faster than my last PR. Actually won a 3rd place award (my first award) in my age group.

Chris, Way to go 11 min/mile is AWESOME! You are so right about racing against ourselves, I was really pleased even though I finished last!
Good luck on your 5K this Saturday, my next one is Oct 1 and is supposed to be fast and flat so I will keep on running and hope for the best!

Shari, you go, girl! Congrats on the PR! That's great! The way I look at it is that we are just racing against ourselves, trying to improve. That's the goal, and you did it!

On that note, I raced last night and got 1st in my age group! Ha ha, I really got "only" in my age group. But hey, I got a money prize and got my entrance fee back, plus a little toward gas (took me over 2 hrs to get to this race!) I think there were 2 people who finished behind me. I came in after an 87 yr old gentleman! But my pace was 11 min./mile, so that's a good thing! Have another 5K on Saturday!
