Anna - here is a copy/paste from The Mayo Clinic: ********************************* Flaxseed, ground May reduce triglycerides
May cause, gas, bloating or diarrhea
May interact with some blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin, clopidogrel (Plavix) and warfarin (Coumadin) *********************************
Note that these aren't the only meds - just an example.
I have been on Omeprazole for a lot of years and notice the difference if I reduce it or don't take it.
Milk does it to me, but then I have a dairy food (milk not yoghurt or cheese) intolerance, along with some food allergies.
Perhaps it might be worth asking your Dr for a referral to a Dietitian, or get some allergy tests done. The Dietitian may be able to work with you on a long-term food food challenge with a variety to see what happens. Mine took a very long time, but it was made loads easier because I have an obsessive personality trait and diarizing is partly how it manifests itself.

For about 2 weeks now I have a lot of heartburn and sometimes I have a tightness around my sternum. I also get bloated from drinking water - puff out like a balloon. I also get relief by letting go of a lot of wind. I have been trying to find things that trigger these symptoms. I take Nexium and I don't feel that I should be on it for the rest of my life. I keep asking my GP to send me to a specialist but he is reluctant. I have been on Nexium for nearly 5 years and i don't think that is the way to go. Eggs bother me too, so do oranges, even the Berocca. Even milk does the same, especially in coffee. By taking notice of what brings a flare up, I have found that green grapes bother my stomach, but not the red ones. Kris, do you know which meds are affected with flaxseed meal? I have hypothyroidism and take meds for that too.

My stomach has been out of sorts for a couple of days. At first I blamed it on the broccoli but I'm a little nauseous and dizzy today so maybe it's a bug of some kind.

It could be that the gall bladder removal has made it harder re the fats.
I love Avocado and chicken sandwiches, or Avocado and ham :-)

I can't seem to process peanut butter or eggs very well, for some reason, don't feel good after I eat them, but love it. No gall bladder, not sure if thats the reason or not. You sure seem like you have lots of info. I always forget about avocado love them.

Here are some healthy fats you could work on, which would also increase your fibre: Hummus Avocado Nuts Peanut Butter
Check with your Dr before getting Omega-3's, flaxseed oil, etc., because they CAN interact with some conditions and medications.
Benefiber is a HUGE help to me. Altho' it is generally prescribed as up to 3 teaspoons daily, by Dietitian has told me to use 9 or more if need be. Fortunately, I don't often have to do that - mainly just if I had been out for a couple days in a row and hadn't taken my own food with me. She said that it is totally safe to use with other meds, and for Diabetics (not that I am a Diabetic :-)

Since being on spark, and using the trackers, I am finding, I am low on fat, which, I thought I was getting enough, we eat beef, but eat no fat yogurts, I will need to get some, omega 3's, Udo's oil, is a 3,6, an 9, combo, does beneful help you go to the bathroom? Gastro, wants me to take miralax, or if you need help, pushing, to take smooth move tea-senna leaf, or can take milk of magnesia, I have been drinking more water. Its all interesting to me, what food, oes to you, goo or bad food.

There are days when I NEED 50g or more. My Dietitian put me on to Benefiber, which is similar to Metamucil but much better - lower calories and doesn't interfere with any meds, PLUS it is a WHOLE LOT BETTER to take. Can't taste it and it doesn't go gluggy, AND you can use it in baking if you want.
I don't find it hard to get 40 grams in but if I have taken any pain meds that have codeine or morphine in, then I need to increase the fibre. Sometimes, but not often, I use Lactulose (Duphalac) the syrupy laxative that softens, BUT that needs to be taken a couple hours before or after certain meds. The other thing is to ensure that you are getting PLENTY of liquid, AND enough (healthy) fats. I wasn't getting enough of the fats, and had to make a real concentrated effort to increase it. That helps with constipation, too.
I eat meat every day, but usually it is 'casseroled' type. I reduce the amount of meat, and replace it with plenty of red lentils and some veges, so whereas I might eat 1/2 cup of casserole/stew, there is only about a Tbsp of meat in it - the rest is the fibrous goodies :-) That can add up to 6 grams of fiber to my meal. I do that with Pizza, too - LOL! Not many have pizza with heaps of lentils, celery, carrot or oatbran in it :-)

Just been to the gastro, for my 3 month, he said, to go 3 months more, on omeprazole, and then try to go off of it. I think, its cuz, I am more constipated, than anything, have always had gas my whole life, and kind've constipated, usually go 2 or 3 times a week. Now, its taking longer to go, if I don't drink caffeine coffee, in a while, that will do it, but if I drink it more than 2 days in a row, it won't work, same thing with metamucil, or flax seeds, it doesn't work. Its gotta be the problem, have no idea why I would be so bloated? I usually hover around my 30ish fiber for the day. You said you have to eat 40 fiber a day, thats a lot. Hard to do. Thanks again.

I couldn't see anything, other than I am wondering if you increased your fibre from fruit/veges and the bran muffins? Sometimes if that is increased quickly it can cause a lot of bloating and gas (take it from me from :-) I track my fibre intake as well, because I NEED a VERY high fibre diet - generally over 40g daily.
One thing I DID notice is that your calories seem to be fairly low for the amount of exercise you do, but that wouldn't cause the problem you complain of.
Maybe if you keep put a note on your daily diary saying if you had this problem or not, and then see if you can find a connection. Otherwise, it would pay to talk with your Dr about it.

If you go to your SparkPage, go to Edit - Top Right side. At the very top and the right side of THAT page there are a number of little boxes. Make sure that the one allowing others to see your Nutrition Tracker is checked, and remember to click "Save" before you go out of it.

I went to have a peek at your Nutrition Tracker to see if I could see any suspects, but you don't show it. Do you use it? If so, are you able to open it, even for a little while, so that I can have a quick peek?

Even water sometimes, makes me feel full, I don't go to the bathroom enough either, maybe thats more of the problem, but I did go this morning. So, not sure whats up or preferably out. Thanks, I do journal everyday, I have to right out symptoms, with it.

I tried the lactose-free milk but it didn't make any difference. I can and do eat a fair bit of yoghurt and occasionally eat cheese - they don't have the chemical/bacteria that causes the problem.
I think that the best way is to create a Spreadsheet and be very vigilant about what and how much you eat, recording it all, and also recording symptoms (or no symptoms as the case may be!) A lot of people decide that 'x' food is causing them problems and eliminate it without doing the appropriate trials - not just once, but a few times to be sure that it wasn't coincidence.

I do eat lots of yogurt, does taking lactose work, or is it not the lactose in cows milk that cause the bloating, thanks for writing back

I used to have considerable gas and bloating but the bulk of it was because I was Dairy Food Intolerant (as opposed to allergic to Diary Food!) It was discovered when I was going to a Specialist for something quite different. He said that I needed to loose a fair bit of weight, so I told him that I got lots of exercise and ate really healthily AND didn't over-eat. Then I remembered my Mum telling me that when I was little I couldn't have cow's milk because I would come up in lots of blisters. I then decided to conduct a controlled experiment. I would measure myself in the a.m. as soon as I got up and after I had been to the loo. Then a few minutes after breakfast I would do the same thing. I made a note of EVERYTHING - one column for symptoms, one for time of day, one for exercise, one for medication and one for what I had eaten and other general comments. I soon discovered a pattern. I took these many sheets of paper to the Specialist when I next went and told him what I had been doing and why. I showed him the first few entries, and then we covered what I had been eating/general comments. He accurately picked EVERY TIME I had consumed even the tiniest bit of cows milk - just a little in a cup of tea was enough to cause my waist to bloat up 4-5 inches in less than an hour from getting up. The days I didn't have any milk, my waist didn't bloat up. HE diagnosed Dairy Food Intolerance because I had done the research and written it all down clearly. Now Ii have Soy Milk.
The other thing with the cow's milk was that if I had Pasta with the milk, or just a little too much, I would end up with severe abdominal pain, radiating up under my sternum and occasionally a little higher. I even passed out a couple times (briefly) because of the pain.) Fortunately it was while I was at work - I worked in a Rest Home and the Principal Nurse (Registered) was on hand to witness it and help me. What reduced the pain those times was farting - long and hard - LOL!

Does anyone, get gassy and bloating, all the time. I am not, gluten tolerant. Been tested, had, a endo done last year, been on omeprazole 20 mg, in the morn, but just gassy and pressure, uncomfortable, endo, showed, starting of erosion, just went back to the gastro. last week, and I was fine, and it seems, that the day after I saw him, I am getting worse, of course. I don't feel heartburn, at all, never had, so was surprised, when he told me, I had gastritis. Don't know if thats the same thing as acid reflux or not. I have had gas my whole life, so its not something new. Just worse.
