I would be interested in actually participating this year. I slacked on this site last year, but still managed to lose weight. I'm thinking if I commit I'll lose the rest instead of plateuing. The department I work for is doing a 'biggest loser' style competition, so far there are 16 of us and I want the 160$ prize!

I have not been doing weight machines at all for two weeks. I have been doing cardio for 1 hr instead. I've had my back adjusted twice in a week by the chiropractor so I'm taking it easy. I'm hoping to get back to the weights after Christmas. emoticon

yeah, i was on a soup diet a couple years ago.. and i did lose weight, but i'd be very hungry during my snack times.. but that's great.. now that it's wintertime, i'll start incorporating the soups.. lucky for me there's a microwave right outside of my cube..

so i'm doing good.. i've been keeping my calories down.. and i've been making more of an effort to do a little bit of cardio almost every day.. i'll have to start posting my weight/pics again.. anyone want to revive this challenge with me? or have any ideas for a 2009's challenge?

.. so i've been doing pretty damn good.. and have been happy about my progress for the last 3 days.. BUT, i went to the buffet with a group that i work with today.. BUT, i ate really well (every plate was 75% veggies) content-wise.. i did have 3 full plates, but i really was conscious about getting a minimal amount of non-veggies.. and i'll be working out tomorrow.. and will be working out all weekend while at work.. so today is just a blip on the radar.. right?

I took a day off from soup lunch to have tacos yesterday. Back to soup today and to the gym. Still only able to do leg exercises and some cardio with this brace on my wrist emoticon .

so my weight increased a little (my weight fluctuates so much that this is a normal thing for me).. but no worries.. i was busy studying for an exam, and although i have another one next week, i managed to get a workout in today at lunch.. felt good.. and it felt even better that it feel like i missed a beat.. so i'm definitely glad about that..

A friend asked me to be her 'accountability buddy' and start going to the gym with her, so I've been going every morning at 5:30. Really, I only get up about 40 minutes earlier than I used to, so it didn't take long to get used to it. It forced me to be more organized; I lay out my clothes for both the gym and work the night before, so all I have to do is sit up, fall into them and go, and I make my lunch the night before, which prevents me from making 'on the fly' choices that aren't good.

I had a few weeks of rebellion where I was eating whatever and wherever I wanted, but at a followup doctor's appointment she explained that the reason people often gain weight on the medicine I'm now taking is because it punches up your appetite. Knowing that, I'm learning to curb things by getting plenty of protein and making a commitment to check in with my husband during the day if I am feeling the overwhelmung urge to indulge. I guess the biggest thing I'm learning to do is be honest about my struggles and NOT keep it all inside my head.

I am starting to understand what they mean in 12 step programs when they say "You are only as sick as your secrets". I'm learning to be honest not only when I fail, but BEFORE I fail, allowing people to help me when I need help. I think for a long time I was operating under the assumption that if I could just be a little bit more 'good enough' everything would magically happen for me. Its not so. But its okay.

I'm careful with the idea of giving up certain things because it sets those things up as a forbidden (and therefore much desired) food. Its just how my mind works. I find it works better to say, I COULD have that, but what might I have that is a better choice? Fast food and the fact that I sometimes drive 1200-1500 miles a week continues to be a huge temptation and struggle for me. One advantage of being older is that I can really see how what I eat affects me; I feel different depending on whether I eat well or badly and I appreciate that, I know I'm not bulletproof and that if I want to avoid certain medical problems I have to commit to lasting change. Being on the ambulance and seeing firsthand how people break down is a sobering experience. But I'm grateful for that too. I won't make claims about how long it'll take me, or what I'll do by this and such a date, all I know for sure is that I will not give up.

Heya...
I haven't seen much of the Olympics but I've been doing some of my own exercising; for two solid months I've been going to the gym every morning. I'm getting used to new medication and trying to organize life a little. I'm dropping some social things to free up a little time so I can take better care of myself and do all the things I need to do to be healthier. I've taken some steps back but I'm still fighting! Hope everyone's hanging in.

Sorry I have been MIA just not in a good state of mind lately, with my back and all. There is good news that I got. I don't have a compression fracture. I instead have a little tear in a disk. Have a PT evaluation tomorrow and the DR says I can restart everything again as of August 1st. Now I really will need to get going.

i should really be asleep right now.. but just wanted to post that i'm on vacation in cape may after a great john mayer concert last night.. and yesterday wasn't so bad.. but today was bad.. i ate a lot.. but i'm hoping my back is strong enough (i'm still semi-recovering from my 2.5+ hr tennis match from wednesday) to be able to get a bike ride in either today or tomorrow or sunday or monday (the latter if the nice weather holds up here)..

my month wasn't so hot.. i gained a little.. but i've also been super busy at work.. not that that's a great excuse, but it did sidetrack me from a bulk of what i'm used to with working out.. but summer's here, and there's ample time to get back into the swing of things.. i actually started back up - kinda - today.. i worked out today.. did some light weight with high reps for my chest, delts and triceps (i'm playing a tennis match tomorrow, and a volleyball match on wednesday).. all before i leave for vacation.. =)

yeah.. so with that 5 lb mini-challenge.. not quite going according to plan so far.. instead of going away, i've been loafing around at home.. and been eating.. ehh.. well not too bad.. but not that great.. and i've only exercised one day so far.. but we'll see how it goes in one more week..

hmmmm.. as in a mini-challenge in this challenge? i think i'd be up for that.. but i'd have to warn you, i might be at a bit of an advantage since i'm off this coming week.. =)

So is anybody up for a challenge? My personal one is to lose 5 lbs by my 23rd birthday [June 14th]. I started about a week ago. If anyone's up for it, I say we start a challenge to lose 5 lbs by July 1st.

I know....unfortunately I didn't have any say...Spitler's in Williamsport sent us in a limo so we weren't driving our own cars. Which was unfortunate because the guys were trying to figure out how to argue that Cabela's was ON THE WAY HOME. Which it isn't, unless you are really, really lost. Or you go home 322 and across the Commodore Barry Bridge to 322 West and pick up 202 to Rt 100 and run out to Honeybrook and get on 422 through Reading to 61 into Hamburg..... emoticon

.. ehhh.. my test was alright.. freakin, the whole semester, i'd walk out of every exam and think WTF and that i had no clue.. so it's the same with this one.. but if i follow my trend, i got better and better.. c-, b, a-.. so hopefully, i pull an a and get a b+ish in the class.. *sigh*

I'm still here & thinking of yas; we hit peak season in my job and I've been on the road most of the time, ie not in front of the computer. The week I had that motorcycle fatality, I had five calls back to back the next night, DUI crash, two medicals, an alcohol poisoning, and a hotload to the helipad for a stabbing victim. Last Saturday we visited PL Customs in Manasquan NJ, who will be building our new ambulances. I have pictures! But during the week its been lots and lots of driving so I've hardly gotten in front of the computer. How'd your test go?

argh.. talk about stressing out.. i had a presentation to do yesterday, and now i've gotta finalize a paper and whip up a presentation for tonight's class.. but i can't wait til this semester is over.. not only will i be able to relax a little, but my working out can get back on a regular schedule.. just in time for our bike team's season to start (actually, it already started, but i had to skip out of the first couple of events because of this crap).. =)

I just wanted to swing by and offer a suggestion to whomever can do it. "Body for Life" is really, REALLY working for me. I've dropped 1-2% body fat already in 10 days. I say if you are able because you have to do cardio and weights 6 days/week, and I know that can be tough for people. I read the book in one night, and it felt like it was talking to me. I have a whole new mindset and failure is only a state of mind, change it. There is no failure, just you and who you want to be.

Hey there,
Yes, we had a week of 80 degree weather, so I spent as much of it as possible OUTSIDE!! Went for a hike Saturday on the rail trail near home, it was great to put on a little day pack and get out. The great news is that this little bit of weight I've managed to lose has resulted in a tremendous decrease in heel pain, so I'm able to do more than I could do for a while. I noticed the other day I was walking up stairs and up hills and all over a property I was surveying talking to the customer the whole time, and I was neither in pain nor out of breath. I didn't lose a whole lot this month but I haven't been terribly structured with eating (not overboard, just not as careful as I have been) so I'm working on that. I started a new blog outside SP to track my progress (link is in my SP Blog if you want to take a look) and I'll be posting the same photos there that I am posting for our challenge. I set up a 'Twitter' on that blog so I can Twitter my food. My husband and I use that to hold each other accountable.

The other thing I'm working on is 'head work'....I've been reading a book called 'The Writing Diet' by Julia Cameron and it has prompted a lot of exploration into the underlying thought processes that go into my overeating. I've written some things on paper that have been lurking in my head for a long time and it really helps a lot. Not everything that needs fixed with this body can be fixed with a pair of sneakers and a treadmill.

lc.. i'm SOOOOO jealous..

danger.. sorry to hear about your issues.. just have to take it a little slower than when you first started sparks.. yeah, it may not be what you want, but the best medicine, in this case, is to not think about it (my wife gets PISSED when i say this to her about something that she's worried about).. that may be initially tough to do, but it'll teach you to focus on more meaningful things.. is there anything (non-strenuous) that you've been wanting to catch back up with? read a book?
.. if you refocus, you'll realize that the sky's the limit.. it's just a matter of being creative..

Hi all,

I guess I am in need of help more than ever. I appologize for never getting my pictures up. For the last month and a half I really haven't done much. Still waiting for some clearence to do stuff. Saw the spine Dr last week he is sending me for a bone scan and an MRI. Then maybe a bone density scan. He thinks I may be oesteoparotic (spelling doesn't count does it?) That would suck. So the long and the short of it is I am bigger than when we started the challenge. 315 now. I have watched what I eat, but by the time I go to work (which I can because I have a desk job) and come home I'm in pain. I can't lift over a gal of milk. So I just sit there. I have been away from sparks since it happened and I just have almost slipped in to depression, but caught that. So I have to kick some $%#%, but I can't do that it would take back strenght and the dr probably wouldn't like it.

After the weekend and the first part of the week being FULL of rain...the sun has been out for the past few days and I have been eatin' it up! Been doing 3 miles outside every afternoon!

Moving into our new house in the new city this Saturday, so that'll be a ton of strength training

Pretty good, pretty good...its been a busy week, but its going well. I'm adding a few more foods this month to the 'hit list', I excluded all McDonald's on 12/26/07 and I have a few more things that need to go.
I made a pot of the good old Weight Watchers 'Zero Point Soup' this week, mostly because we were broke and I was looking for healthy things that I did really actually like to eat. It IS good, believe it or not....and its great to divide up in containers and freeze to take for lunches.
I know, I'm brain damaged....its almost 80 here finally and I'm making SOUP.

hey lc.. you are absolutely right.. and glad to see that everything is on the up and up for you..

.. things are going alright with me.. i've been good with limiting myself.. but work/school have been crazy for me.. this 2 classes a semester, and an overbearing fulltime job, are wreaking havoc with my time.. i have to study for an exam i know nothing about, and i have to be at work at 6am both days this weekend (today was awful).. and today was non-stop problem after problem.. hopefully tomorrow goes more smoothly.. *sigh*

i wish i was back in kindergarten..

I have come to a bit of a revelation. I have lost almost 15 pounds since starting this journey and made some great changes to my diet and exercise routine. My revelation is this...if I can lose weight and make lifestyle changes while finishing my undergrad degree, moving, getting married, starting a new job, and starting graduate school all within 3 months of each other...I can do ANYTHING and I can certainly maintain a healthly lifestyle when my life slows back down!

Shield~ You are absolutly right about making your goals more managable numbers! You are doing so awesome! And that is great that you are going to get new turnout gear because yours are too big! Just wait until you need another set because the new ones are way too big! You better tell your chief to start budgeting money now. LMBO.
And thanks for the boost...you are right. I'm am to the point now that I need to focus on my strenght training and focus on eating right and not worry about the scale so much. But, I do need to get a routine going. LOL

I like posting pictures.
For someone like me, who has been overweight my entire life, the added accountability is important.
I have a long way to go, and breaking it up into little milestones, little goals, is the only thing that keeps me from being completely overwhelmed at the prospect of having to lose nearly 200 pounds. We all have similar work/life stresses when it comes to EMS, and we're in a unique position to encourage each other in those situations.

Angie, if your numbers go up, but you feel leaner and stronger and happier about how you look, why does it matter what the number is? You are still doing great, taking care of yourself, getting fitter, in other words, accomplishing your goals.
And I know what you mean. I swear, they should give a length of five inch to the kids at the high school and let them roll it in gym class. emoticon

I just got a relay race idea for the next picnic.

I think I'll take my next picture down at the station on my favorite bit of equipment.

Oh, and I'm getting measured for new turnouts soon. Because mine are old. And too big. :)

Rolland~ Don't be so hard on yourself! We all have our rough patches and we know that this isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle.

As far as the next challenge, 150 is my goal and to tell you the truth, the whole challenge thing, including posting pics stresses me out. I thought I might handle it better now that I was closer to my goal, but it just doesn't seem to be in my nature. LOL Plus with the exercise room nearing completion at the station I really need to work on my arm muscles which will probably make the scale go up. (I really learned I need arm muscles after the barn burning today! LOL I am exhausted after running hose and laying hose on the truck. LMBO)

I can do this!

sorry guys.. i've been such a slacker with this challenge (at least on the admin end) as of late.. i've been feeling kind of ashamed on the days leading up to and on the weigh in day (i was really thinking that i'd be able to post later on that night).. i had a streak of binging, and it came to a head on weigh in day.. so i was feeling ultra low about myself.. and for the purposes of this challenge, it was wrong not to keep anyone posted according to the rules that i set up, but i will get myself back on track starting tomorrow (sunday - a normal weigh in day) with my check in weights/goals/pics/etc.. but to get a clue of how crappy i was feeling about myself, i believe on saturday i was at 291..

.. but, i've gotten back on a little better of a track.. i've gotten my calorie intake back down to ~3000 range (still a LOT higher than i'd like), and i've gotten some decent workouts in (something i wasn't getting the time to do the previous week).. i'm hoping to take a break from studying/writing papers, and hit the road with my bike sometime today..

to everyone's progress.. everyone keep up all their good work.. from angie and her 6lb loss, to shield and her remarkable 12lb change (i see a difference too), to ems's (incremental weight changes) getting back to exercising.. and to everyone else's being able to maintain despite coping with busy lifestyles.. everyone's looking great (for the ones that have been good about their pics) - *cough* except for me.. =(
.. but remember this challenge, although superficially is about seeing weight loss, is mostly about keeping up a healthy lifestyle, and feeling good about yourself..

so what does everyone think about the next set of percentage? 15% again? anyone have any gripes about the reporting? i personally would like to reiterate the posting of pics for the pure reason of showing off your progress.. i dunno about anyone else, but i like looking at them because i like seeing progression of changes in your bodies ('looking great'), but even moreso, i like seeing all of your changes in attitudes about yourself (looking like you feel like you are looking great)..
.. that's what this all is about for me.. =)

Pictures are up. They aren't super clear, unfortunately, but I see a change, so that's good.
I guess I cheated by getting my hair cut too; that was probably good for a pound!
Start Weight: 320.8
End Weight: 309.0
Net loss: 11.8 Lbs

Second Quarter Goal: 285 (That's a bit more than 5% but still doable.)

Gah! Sorry I missed the end of month update. I'm in the process of moving now, so my camera upload thingy is packed up. I've lost 3 pounds in March (161), which I contribute to watching my calories and simply running around all over the place frantically trying to get everything done!!

Well, I was 2.5 pounds short of my challenge goal and I'm now 3.5 pounds away from my SP goal. The new exercise room at my station should be complete this week, so hopefully that will change soon; although I hope to add some muscle now, so the scale may go up for awhile.

OK, I'm five shy of the goal. (It's that special time of the month, the way 'the girls' are straining at the leash I may only be THREE shy, just sayin'.) I'm not sad about that, this first quarter got me back on track, re-established good habits, I had a few days where I let go of the raft but I'm sooo close to being out of the 300s forever that I am doubly committed to the second quarter. I have to say, even having lost only what I did, I feel great. I think its because my body can actually USE what I'm putting in it, I have energy, no heartburn, no inflammation from all the grease and fast food. The ankle problems are improving, I actually have more pain-free days lately, I have hope that by the end of this next quarter I'll have mostly pain free days.

My goal for this coming quarter: 285

Present: 309
6/30 goal: 285
Net loss 24 pounds

oh and I did finally break the 154.5 and hit 153. Sure it's only 1.5 pounds but it's nice to see a new number once in awhile! (a lower number, not a higher one lol)
