I work at Safeway and there is a man in town here that trains guide dogs. He had a golden lab that was in training, and he was in the store. I asked if I could pet her and he said yes, that they were trying to train her to be appropriate with people. So, I bent over to pat her head and say hi and when I opened my mouth that dog french kissed me!! Big slurp right in the mouth. I just laughed and wiped my mouth out. He finally gave up on her and gave her to a family with a bunch of kids. She was just too social and loved everybody. He is now training a black lab that is much more reserved.

Interestin tale, Cathy.I rpetty much know a lot of the blind folks in Portland but not all of them. there are many on my former Dragon boat team.

As we walk in the park I an able to control leone by my voice when people are walking by theyaoften say good morning and I great back but tell leone "No" It's best when you suspect a blind or visually impair4ed person has a guide dog that you don't make eye contact with the guide dog because take Leone for isntance she would do anything for attention and a good rubbing down and pat from someone who looks her in the eyes. I ahd Office Max make her a sign that says "Please don't pet me I'm working for Mistress" emoticon But if they ask to pet her and she is not "on duty" I allow other to ept her but when in ahrness i kindly say no, sorry.

Have fun at the bbq, but remember to make healthy choices!!! I totally blew it yesterday, but am picking up the reins again today. We have an adult foster care home for developmentally disabled adults. We had to go pick our client up from camp, and it was so early, we ended up stopping at Jack in the Box to use the toilet. Hubby bought two breakfast burritos for each of us. Over 800 calories in one and over 400 in the other. So, I had blown my fat and calories for the day right there. I do not usually do fast food, and now I know why. uggg

The yellow lab I knew belonged to a neighbor and good friend in Portland. When I would go to the bus stop, Molly would leap her fence, lock her jaws around my wrist and tug me to her owners house. I was not allowed to walk past it without saying hello. I tried to tug away, but she would just exert more pressure. If I meekly went with her she had a very soft mouth. So, I would beat on the door, give Molly back and run for the bus. Thank goodness, I was the only person Molly did that too. Her owner was also legally blind and has always had dogs, but never got a guide dog. I am not sure why.

That same neighbor and I rode the bus a lot and made friends with a couple. The husband was legally blind and had a young guide dog. The wife was sighted and she walked the husbands older guide dog that had gone blind. So I guess that made her a seeing eye person to a golden retriever. I have no idea if that was legal, but everyone thought it was wonderful that the retired service dog was being honored and got to go places with the family.

With any luck oldest GD and I are going to spend the zoo gift certificates on Tuesday. Hubby has doctors appts. Wed. and Thurs. My son is having a BBQ on Sat. It will be a busy but fulfilling week.

Yellow labs do mellow out, but it takes a few years. They are so loyal and loving, kind and gentle, I love that breed.

I keep in close contact with our trainer. A lot of what Leone is going through is puppy stuff. Yellow labs are puppies through and through. With the prong collar on it keeps her closer at my side. It is ahrd for puppy raisers o give up all the puppies. Leone's puppy raiser is a lovely woman and we write to each other often. she cried at our graduation. Saying goodbye to her baby but she now has a black albe breeding labradoodles. So she is keeping busy with that dog.If I ever get another one I'd love a Doodle. Lighter weight than leone

Have you talked to anyone from the guide school about how to correct her hunting instinct? Glad you have a follow up soon. I was asked to raise guide puppies for a 4-H project. My knitting leader's husband was totally blind from diabetes. This was back before daily testing. I would have loved it, but my parents said "no". They probably knew it would be too hard for me to give up a puppy and that it would crimp our traveling lifestyle. Mom was also allergic to dogs so I would have had to sleep in the basement with it.

Yummmm that sounds so good.

No I ahve not had Leone that long we graduated from guide dogs of the Desert in Palm Springs in December. A big convention is coming up this next weekend in Portland her trainer will be here for 2 weeks and part of that time we will be out working with him on the streets. she's doing well but we need to work on a few things. such as last week we were walking down the street she spotted a kitty cat under someones car. I didn't see it coming but her 65 lb. body slamed me ahrd into that car as she tried to catch the cat underneath it. My sounder got hurt as did my cheek. ON WITH HER PRONG COLLAR

Calories in the juice should not be too bad, especially if you down a glass for breakfast. Our vita Mix was beyond old, like the very first model they came out with in the 70's. Give your guide doggie a hug from me. We are dog less at the moment, and probably will be for awhile. We have three house cats that keep us busy, but I miss having a dog. I love Saturday Market, and have not been there in years. Is it still under the Burnside Bridge?

You have not had Leone that long have you? I think I remember you posting about going for training. Leone will be beautiful in her new coat.

Mine is a Juiceman juicer and it worked just fine after sitting on the shelf for 15 years. It makes the strawberries quite frothy which I like. I preserved one batch of jam, two quarts of juice and then juiced the rest of the strawberries with bananas, orange juice, apple juice, celery and carrots. Sure it is on the high end of calories, but oh so nutritious. I intend to mix it up with my oatmeal yogurt concoction and freeze what I don't use tomorrow in ice cube trays. Should make a nice frozen treat for later.

We walked and walked and wlked today at the Portland Saturday market. PSU has like a farmers Market. they offer samples to the customers. Oh the cherries were jsut so delicous. But i was saving for my precious leone she ahs a birthday coming up on the 22nd of this month and I bought her a fur lined winter rain coat. She si my beloved Guide Dog. We actually went to 2 Saturday markets. Legs are aching now.

You know, I believe I do if I haven't given it away. I bought one before the two vita mix's were donated to me. I will see if it is still in the pantry. That is my room to clean today anyway.

Thanks for the idea.

I have two. I guess I need to get them down and see if I can order the missing parts to at least one of them. I inherited Moms and before that a friend found the other in a garage sale for $5,00. She already had one so got it for me.

There is pectin to make sugar free preserves. I am going to try that tomorrow and I would really rather just run the berries through a blender and make jam.

Also the Seattle to Portland bike run is tomorrow. So if I leave the house I need to do it early before they start blocking our driveway.

Our Vita Mix burned up darn it. We want a new one, but they are spendy. I forgot to check the prices on new ones today when we were at Costco. We used it all the time.

I miss my vita mix. I really liked a variety of healthy slushies. I added carrots to everything. They seem to disappear in the fruit or maybe I just like carrots.

They make the best milkshakes too, but without the ice cream. Just put the frozen berries in the blender, add a dash of milk or yogurt and whip it up. No sugar needed.

time to buy strawberries. I like to freeze them individually on a cookie sheet then put them in a freezer bag. So lovely to dig out in the winter and eat them like frozen pops.

It's summertime guys!!! Now is a good time to focus on getting outside and moving. I know that where most of you live it is pretty hot, but getting up early and going for a walk is a good way to start the day. I prefer to walk early in the morning, and I read somewhere that working out in the morning is the best if you can do it. Also this is the season for all the local fruits and veggies to be hitting the shelves of the fruit stands and farmers markets. That really helps me control the calories. And, do not forget to keep up the water intake. Have a great summer!!! I know I will.
