Digger and Daisey, check out ava.org for Year Round Events (YRE), there's one that starts at Ray's Food Place in Waldport, the "Start Box" will likely either be a podium that says "Yachats Coastal Gems Volkssport Club," or a portable file folder carrier that is kept behind the customer service desk that they'll be able to give you. Funny enough, it goes over the Alsea bridge!

There's also a few YREs that start in Yachats and Newport if you're willing to make the drive.

They're just YREs, but they'll give you a taste of the fun of Volkswalking, and perhaps they'll take you to an area you haven't seen before. I've lived over 20 years in the Portland area, and practically every weekend I see something new, it's fun!

There used to be a volkswalking club in Columbia County. I remember seeing articles in our newspaper, but it must have disbanned. It was not listed on the website. I think I might tackle the Oaks bottom walk with some grandkids. We used to walk that trail with the kids when they were young.

Honestly, I love them! Been doing them since 2002, some years more than others due to life, I'm just about ready to send in my 1500km book. The nice thing about living in the Portland area (used to live in Vancouver, now Hillsboro) is that there's at least one practically every weekend within driving distance during the nice weather, plus there are tons of "year round" events that you can do on your own, starting at local hospitals, grocery stores, etc.

The people are all very friendly, many of the walks are suitable for people who aren't extremely active, though many are also quite challenging and more accurately termed hikes than walks...Plus, there's no greater motivation to get healthy than seeing someone your grandparents' age leave you in their dust!

For those who'd like to do a 10k (6.2mi) walk tomorrow (there's also a 5k/3.1mi route, too!), there's one on Swan Island ( walkoregon.org/eventlst.htm for more info). The walk is rated 1+, which generally means "Easy walk on pavement or good trails with no significant hills. It takes the average walker two hours or so to complete a walk with this rating," the plus means it might have a little bit of a hill or spots of a poorly maintained trail.

All Volkswalks ( ava.org/ ) can be walked for free, or if you'd like, pay $5 for a New Walker packet, get your first two books, plus credit (stamps in your books) for your first three walks for free (credit for a walk is usually $3). After certain milestones (10 walks, 500km, etc.) you send in your books and get embroidered patches and hatpins commemorating your journeys!

I'm not affiliated with this walk or any of the local clubs, just a happy Volkswalker who loves seeing new sites!
