It's like anything else. Moderation in all things. You can get diarrhea from eating too much cabbage as I would well know. LOL. I kind of went crazy once. I would not consider sugar alcohol a healthy treat but an occasional alternative for a healthier treat.

I have both books. There are many carb counters out there.

There are no valid, long-term, double-bind, scientific studies that indicate that sugar alcohols are a problem. I would not consume tons of them because i believe in moderation in all things.

I am such an infant with these things. The hospital dietician told me that I needed to avoid sugar alcohols (as well as sugars), but she never gave me any target numbers or the like. I need things to be specific, cut and fried for me to use it effectively. All I have been doing is looking at labels and noting if there are any of these and determining if it looks like very much to determine if I want to include the product in my menu. Geesh, I have to grow up soon.

OK, I've always found the Sugar Alcohol listed on the products and from what I'd understood? They and Fiber are deducted from the Carb Totals? So I've been doing OK all these yrs. doing it that way.

I just found a new, actually two new books with carb and net carbs listed so I could use this. I liked the article, it helped also. Some of the books don't have fiber and the sugar alcohol listed, these do.

I deduct sugar alcohols and fiber from carbs to get net carbs.
