I agree Ginger, summer has been way to short here also. I really should relocate to a warmer location year round. I would love it.

Hi Ginger, I do pop in here from time to time. I want to really take some time when it gets colder and I am inside more to try to build the Crazy team. I've not been real happy with the way that is going. I really enjoy B&B and the girls here.

Hi Brenda, I miss all of you too, the two teams I lead keep me busy but I had to come say high and keep in touch. Summer is the busiest time of year with all the outdoor stuff to do, I'll be back for sure when it gets cold out again. LOL! Have a great day!

It could be a matter of location and people. I lived about 20 minutes away in a small town and had no where near the amount of birds or types of birds that I have here. Here I have the grosbeaks, tufted titmice and the woodpeckers. There I didn't

I have them here in Pa and love it when we spot them in the yard. We hear them more than we see them. We have actually seen two of them together and it is awesome.

Sorry, have to break in here for a second...where did he come from? Isn't he perrrrty?? I remember when my husband and I was first dating and he took me to his grandmother's homeplace on the mountains and I saw my first pileated woodpecker. She called them Wood Hens. They are just so neat! And since we moved here, I hear them daily. I've seen them far away, but not up close yet, not like the day we saw them on the mountain! Great shot!

Okay, back to our program!

Who have you encouraged today?

I think spring summer is when we see bird nests around here. One of my sisters is about to take all of hers down. She has about three scattered about her yard and every year a bluebird family gets in one of them and she can see a few eggs and then out of the blue a sparrow comes in and throws the eggs out of the house and smashes them. Makes her sick. Can't seem to keep a bluebird family prospering where she lives.

After we visited Zoo America in Hershey Park two weeks ago, they had examples of boxes that could be built for bats and owls and other birds. I think the bat box is neat looking, it has small slits in it and the owl box is really big. I've always wanted to have a bat box because we live near a stream and we see lots of bats all summer long.

Not sure what we're going to do yet.

Who have you encouraged today?

We have put houses up in the past with no luck. Our property is small and I think our feeder is too active, neighbours too near. Birds may seek shelter in the winter in specially designed roosting boxes. Not all birds are "cavity nester" (bird houses) and different ones like different sizes. There is even some suggestions on which direction to face them. Some birds are fussy and need just the right spot. Sometimes the houses just need to be "weathered" a bit. I would think breeding season for most of typical birdhouse-birds is pretty much over for this year. Keep your fingers crossed for next spring. In the fall peek inside to make sure things like squirrels and wasps didn't make a home in there. If you don't leave them up through the winter put them back out early. We have early arrivals in March eager to find nesting spots. (in Canada)

Good luck.

Hi! this is a tricky one and I don't have the answer. We have three houses, 2 are special for bluebirds. They have used one of them for the past 3 years, ever since we put them up. This year something else, I think a chickadee used one of the bluebird houses and the bluebirds used the other one and then they surprised me by using the one house that hangs on the shed mainly for decoration. Be patient, they will come.

hi everyone - i hung up two birdhouses a couple of months ago. there are 2 bird feeders in between the 2 houses, with all types of food. but, i really don't know when birds even think about taking over a new house: is it winter to keep warm, or spring for a new family? i just can't wait til something shows an interest!
