This is not a suet reciepe as such but the birds love these peanut butter cakes I make and they are really easy .Mix together a cup of birdseed or black sunflower seed with over a cup of peanut butter and freeze it in a square container (I use one of the smaller older tupperware freezer containers and that is perfect size).It fits in one of the hanging wire feeders they sell for hanging on a tree after you take it out.This isnt good for summer when its hot but works great in the winter when its cold out.

For this answer, I grabbed a long time favorite book called Feed Your Feathered Friends, Make Your Yard a Bird Sanctuary, by Donna Suther. I got this from QVC a long time ago and the book is no longer made.
Suet: (Beef fat) funishes body heat for birds, which is very necessary in the winter. To the insect eaters, suet is a popular substitute for the "meat" they cannot find in the cold months.
Beef Suet Treat: The suet can be melted and then mixed with an equal amount of sugar syrup by boiling one part sugar and three parts water. Add bread crumbs, nutmeats, cornbread and peanut butter before the mixture sets. Make the mixture into balls and put them into mesh to hang on your tree. (Sparrows and even Hawks will enjoy this.) Mutton Suet: is popular with birds, especially Woodpeckers. Pork Fat: is enjoyed by Mockingbirds, Blue Jays, Warblers, Nut Hatches, and of course, Woodpeckers.
Fats and fatty foods are especially liked by the insect-eating birds. Leftover cooking fats (bacon grease, fats from roasted meats, etc) can be clarified and most of the salt removed by heating it and frying several slices of unpeeled potatoes until brown and straining it through cheesecloth. Store in a cool place until used. Suet, the trimmings from meats, and peanut butter are concetrated fats used. Mix small amounts of peanut butter thoroughly with soft fats and other ingredients. Pure peanut butter can "choke" tiny birds' gullets in cold weather.
1 cup ground suet 2 cups commercial birdseed mixture
Melt suet slowly in pan and add seeds. Half a cup of peanut butter may be added. When partly cooled, put in soft margarine tubs and pipe stem cleaners or wire are fastened to the tubs for fastening on tree branch.
Suet Cakes or Sticks
Pan drippings and peanut butter blended together. Add coarse corn meal, birdseed, and ground raisins. Let cakes "sit" in a small bowl. Store in refrigerator and put out as needed.
Suet Cakes for Birds (Makes 16 cakes)
1 pt. melted suet 1 cup chopped peanuts 1/2 mixture sold for insectivorous birds 1 cup sicily seeds
Mix thoroughly; pout into little cake tins
Suet Cakes for Birds
1 lb. finely chopped and melted sweet suet 1/2 cup birdseed 1/2 cup chopped peanuts
Mix and pour into cake pans to harden. Cut into squares.
Make a suet cake by melting one pound of beef suet over low heat, blending in 12 oz. of peanut butter and adding 1/2 cup corn meal, two cups of mixed bird seed, and one cup raisins. Use pipe cleaners to hang suet cakes from the tree. Cardinals, Blue Jays, Juncos, and other birds will love it.
Mix last three in double boiler; mix with seeds and meal. (1 lb. sunflower seeds may be added) Fills 34 tuna-sized cans.
Miscellaneous Ideas on Feeding Birds
Woodpeckers love fat from your roast, cooked or raw. Pour melted fat over stale bread crumbs and mix well. Put crumbs in a skillet where you have cooked steak. Feed suet in summer and winter, and get an extra bonus by seeing the parent take suet from feeder to give to the young. Discarded outer leaves of lettuce and cabbage, placed in wire pockets, are enjoyed by many birds. No crumbs, vegetable shreds or plate scrappings should go in the garbage can. Put leftover dressing in suet holders and watch the birds devour it. Finely ground dog biscuits is a good substitute for the most expensive nutmeats. A loaf of stale bread hung in a tree has been found a good lure to draw away the Starlings from the stations where smaller birds feed.

Back in the day we would buy the fat ,heat it add seed pour it into paper milk cartons and let it cool we would then slice it and hang it in the bags onions came in. LOL do they even sell that fat any more.I also used to save orange juice concentrate tubes I would add seed and bacon fat as I had it I stored it in the fridge.I think I read somewhere that is bad?? It has been years since I coud even put it out It melts here and in florida it was nasty too. :(
