Hi team,

One of my June bugs wanted me to let every one know that if you are having leg cramps you need more potassium and/or calcium and magnesium.

I pulled this info off of some websites. Just thought you could look at them.

Here are some things to look at about it:

What foods are high in potassium?
Cantaloupe
Bananas
Oranges
Apricots
Avocado
Strawberries
Potatoes
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Chard
Bell pepper
Eggplant
Squash
Crimini mushrooms
Brussels sprouts
Turmeric
Parsley
Spinach
Broccoli
Tuna
Halibut

Potassium is a mineral salt (electrolyte) that is essential for maintaining the balance of pH levels in our body fluids. It plays an important role in regulating our blood pressure, bone mass, nervous system, muscle function, and heart, kidney, and adrenal functions. Low levels of potassium can cause potassium deficiency and bring on a whole host of health problems.

People can get cramps in their calf muscles due to a few reasons. The first might be a failure to stretch adequately before and after exercising. Muscle cramps might also develop from simple overexertion, a case of pushing yourself too far, too fast. The third possibility is an insufficient intake of fluids. Staying hydrated is essential to keeping your electrolytes in balance, and allowing your muscles to contract and relax. The balance of electrolytes in the body, i.e. sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and carbon dioxide rely on adequate levels of hydration. So even though cramps can be related to low levels of certain minerals such as calcium and potassium, supplementing your diet with these minerals must be done in combination with keeping yourself hydrated.

Finally, cramps in the calf muscles either during exercise or at night can be the result of insufficient mineral intake. Most commonly, cramps can be avoided by increasing your intake of calcium, potassium, and magnesium. Both calcium and magnesium can be taken in the form of a supplement, but it is recommended that potassium levels be increased through the intake of more fruits and vegetables. People with certain medical conditions may be at risk in taking potassium supplements. Potassium can be found in cantaloupes, bananas, tomatoes, grapefruits and orange juice. These minerals should be part of a person's daily diet, as it will not help to simply take a supplement before running, or when cramps set in.

Let's drink up JuneBugs. I am faithfully drinking my water and will post or sparkmail it in on Saturday. On a diet board i belonged to ages and ages ago, we used to have water races.

Also, if you are drinking a lot more water than you are used to, you might need to increase you potassium. I woke up with leg cramps this morning and realized that this was probably the problem.

Welcome to the Clear and Natural Water Challenge!

This challenge runs from Monday, June 1st through Tuesday, June 30th.

Objective:

All you have to do is drink clear water each day and post it on your team thread! Please keep a weekly running total on each posting. That will make it easier for your team captain to report the totals to me each Saturday night (by midnight) and I will post the team totals on Sunday.

Remember, this is supposed to be fun!

There will be fun trivia questions and games along the way too!

Feel free to post and get to know your team and enjoy friendship for the month of June (and beyond!)

Questions: Please feel free to ask your team captain or you may ask me! Just keep drinking!
