What did I learn from this? That no matter how I tried to balance out my calories in and my calories burned, I have fallen into such a pattern that It all was about the same each time. The 2nd part of this challenge I did up my calories in by a bit and I seem to have lost the most weight that time. Though I believe it was healthier calories in then this last time. All in all, I beleive that life will always get in the way, it is just what I do with it that will make the difference. I did lay out my exercise schedule in a blog for all to see so I am accountable for that. I will see where I am at the end of November with new fitness schedule. I will continue to watch what I eat.

I am reading a book right now called ChiRunning. The author suggests that shin splints can be caused from too much pushing off with your toes.

Just a thought.

Thank you. Good article! I do know that I need to get better shoes. I beleive another part of my problem was when I increased my incline. I need to watch now much I push and do it gradual.
Thank You

I don't know ANYTHING. Just a warning. But others around Spark who have complained about shin splints - "those in the know" often respond with - do you need new shoes. Maybe Spark has a page on shin splints.

Here is an article from runners world that talks about them....

I am so bummed out right now. I got a shin splint today. Of all things. So now no walking for I hope only a couple days. I guess I will be getting in more strength training now... I am also looking for some sort of exercises I can do in the hot tub. Hoping soaking in hot water between icings will help and get in some exercise at the same time. How long does it take for one of these to heal? I am following strick instructions to rest, ice, wrap and take aleeve. Hope not to long. Have a good night all

I actually started doing this several months ago on my own. It was an eye-opener. You would think - living in this body all these years - I would have known it better. Now I have a better understanding of how it works.

We can keep this challenge going for a long time.

I didn't finish with this one, because I've already found out the answer. Last week, I took in way too many calories. It's no wonder that I gained a lb.,and not losing. Going to have to work on this part of my plans. What an eye opener.

AXREAH: Sorry, I don't know anything about hang nails. Maybe someone on the team is in the medical field and can help.

You can still join in and be accountable for calories, for healing, just set your goals accordingly.

Hi Team,

Sorry I've been MIA and didn't complete the challenges. House cleaning got the best of me and I was laid up with back pain for a few days. Stupid Rug Doctor, it was too hard on my back and I paid the price.

I always tend to over do it and then I suffer. Nothing new!

Also, I won't be walking for a few days either. I have a terrible hang nail on my one toe and it's killing me! Any ideas of how to help get rid of it, it really hurts? I can't even put shoes on.

Sorry again, I feel like such a let down, because I didn't finish and I just wanted to be as "Accountable" as I'm able to be with you all.

After all WE are a TEAM! :-)

"Congrats" to you all for doing a GREAT job! :-)

Ax

WHAT TO DO ON THE 11TH…… Finish recording for 1st – 10th then….

Figure your average calories consumed and burned.

#1 Average Calories Consumed for 10 days =

#2 Average Cardio Calories Burned for 10 days =

#3 Subtract: Average Calories Consumed – Average Calories Burned =

#4 Pounds lost = SW – EW =

What do I need to change? Remember this – if you are sailing across the ocean and change the angle of the tiller or sail by only a very small amount you will end up in an entirely different destination. Small changes (or large changes) work wonders.

What am I willing and able to change on a regular basis so that I am losing a healthy amount of weight each week. Think about these 2 words – able and willing.

Do I need to change the average amount of calories consumed (increase or decrease)?
Do I need to change and increase the average number of calories burned.
Do I need to incorporate strength training into my weekly routine?

Identify what needs to be done.
Write your commitment. Don’t over commit. Ask yourself – what am I willing and able to do. Don't say I am going to do 100 push ups and sit ups every day if you are only 'really' willing and able to do 20, 3 times a week.

****************************************
***

COPY THE FOLLOWING in your reply:

Average Calories Consumed: Oct 1 – 10 =
Average Calories Burned: Oct 1 – 10 =
Net Average Calories for 10 days: =
Pounds Lost or Gained:

I am accountable – write your change commitment here:

Starting weight – Oct 11 =

Keep a record: CALORIES - CARDIO CALORIES BURNED = NET CALORIES
Sample: DATE: 1634 - 219 = 1415

Oct 14:

Oct 16:
Oct 17:
Oct 18:
Oct 19:
Oct 20:

ENDING WEIGHT =

At this point we will do 2 things:
Average the last 10 days and also average the last 20 days.

Stick with this!! It is just learning what this body needs both calorie wise and exercise wise. It is learning to be accountable for this body and this gift of life.

This is the 3rd time I have posted this story on different threads. Sorry if you have already read it...

A lesson on focus:
The night before last I was chopping some cabbage for dinner and DH and I were talking about Al Pacino. DH said, "He must be like 75 years old." I said, "No, he is not that old He is about 60." DH said, "He is." I said, "He isn't." Back and forth several times. I finally looked at DH to tell him, in so many words, he is a dope. And that is when I sliced my thumb - a quarter inch on an angle. Who felt like a dope then?

I lost my focus. It is the same way with Health and Fitness. I have to maintain my focus and always keep it in the forefront of my vision. Cause if I don't - I may 'hurt' myself health wise.

A lesson from an unfocused dope!!!

Oh, Al Pacino is 68.

Have a good day!!!

I do not plan on eating more even though the recommendation went up. As long as I am losing 2 -4 pounds per month, I think I am eating okay. With what I weigh now - if I were losing too much I would be concerned. Or if I were not losing anything.

But for now I am sticking with my 1200 - 1500 calorie range. With the change the recommendation went up to 1430 - 1780. I have been averaging in the mid 1400's for a couple of months now and so I will stick with that!

On one team I was on they recommended 2% per month as a realistic goal. So with everyone's weight being different that may be a good goal to shoot for.

Just some thoughts.....

"Thanks" Jean,

After I get through my first week with your "Accountability Challenge", I'm going to check into that and see what it says for me.

I'm thinking maybe that is why my weight is staying the same and I'm not losing. Could be I'm burning more then I'm eating and my body is holding onto everything.

I understand how you can be nervous though, as well.

My calorie range is between 1200 and 1500, right now. But I think by the end of the day, I've burnt more then 300 or 400 calories.

Some mornings I even wake-up and I'm literally starving! I have the whole nine yards, my stomach growls and, I even get nausea because I'm sooo...hungry.

"Thanks Again" and PLEASE let me know how you are doing on the switch???

Ax

Oh my- I just went in and changed my fitness goals as well, and there is no way I can eat as much as they say, well maybe with winter coming and wanting more hot meals rather than salads and stuff, maybe, I just think that as much as they are recommending is really high... I have a hard time eating enough now. I will see what I can do though.

Under the MY FITNESS tab it has a link to change your fitness goals. After I clicked on this I changed by previous "calories burned per week" total from what I did when I was first a member to what I am doing now. The calories were automatically refigured by Spark.

I fear changing what I have been doing because what I have been doing seems to be working. But it is something that I need to consider.

I have not updated my fitness goals for awhile as I did not do nearly the amount of cardio on a regular basis that I do now - I just went in and put in the number of calories I burn per week now and it upped my calorie range by quite a bit (by about 300). It is kind of scary to think that I can or should be eating more - after years and years of thinking I should not eat anything in order to lose weight. This is definitely a learning process.

Yea, I need to burn more calories, plus I need to decrease my calories ,some days. I don't feel as if , I've done very well, this past week. I had other issues that had an effect on my exercise programs. Now, I can see what some of my issues are why I'm not losing as I would like too. I need to recommit to do better on the next challenge. I have to stay focused, because I actually forgot that certain days was my day for my strength training. Therefore, I didn't do all of my exercises, because I was too tired, and it got to late.

I definatly need to watch what I eat when eating out as some days too many calories explains why I didn't lose any this week. Will do better this coming week.

I am only one, but still, I am one. I cannot not do everything but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do what I can.

If it is to be, it is up to me.

Sorry about the water - I was originally going to include this in the challenge, but then thought it was just too much to keep track of. I forgot to delete it from the original post. I will do that now.

Although if you want to keep track of cups of water - you can. Spark encourages drinking water!!!

10/4- I am wondering if I am over exercising? I don't feel like I am but sometime I wonder with the high calories burned number and now SP recommends way more calories than I think I can consume- This is going to be really interesting to see the out come.

10 DAY WEIGHT:
Directions: Add up all your calories consumed for these 10 days and divide by 10. This is your average calories per day.

Add up all your cardio calories burned for these past 10 days and divide by 10. This is your average calories burned per day.

Do the math:
Average calories consumed - Average calories burned = average net calories.

ASK YOURSELF:
Do I need to change this somehow?
Do I need to change (increase or decrease) my calories consumed?
Do I need to change (increase or decrease) my calories burned?

Your post might look something like this for the first 10 days. After 10 days we will set up a new post:

I am accountable:

This is a different type of challenge. For this we are going to track the following:

CALORIES EATEN and CARDIO CALORIES BURNED

It is important to know and be accountable for these; to understand how they work together in our own body. If we average 1700 calories per day and average 150 cardio calories burned per day, we can ask ourselves – are we losing weight with this? You cannot know the answer after a few days and that is why we are going to have this accountability challenge for 1 month – maybe longer.
