That is quite a challenge! Best of luck! My goal is to be able to walk without my walker after cancer surgery! But I am able to do 10 minutes of exercise a day and grateful for small achievements!

Good luck to everyone trying the challenge. I so wish I could give it a try but doc gave the big thumbs down. I can however do wall pushups, and do the walking the 1.5 miles...I'll build up to 15 mins per mile ;)
I'll keep a tally of how I do. I'll build up to slow jog and modified pushups!
Sprinting and sit ups will have to wait for the doc's ok tho.

KarenAnn I can only do pushups against the wall. It actually sounds easier than it is. Face the wall standing a foot or more away and place your hands flat on the wall (as if the wall is the floor) at shoulder height and do the push up (push aways). If that's too easy then scoot your feet further back until you feel the burn. You can move your hands up or down to work different muscles.

I control my food. I no longer let food control me.

I can hardly do 10 push-ups at a time for some reason. I can lift so much, but those push-ups work it in a different way. I'm adding them to my challenge.

I think it means Physical Training. I am not positive though. My husband is currently in training for the physical test to get into the police academy, so I have been doing a lot alongside him to encourage him AND get myself in shape!

Reinda,
Thank you so much. I am not very good with the computer, therefore it takes me forever to figure things out. This helps so much.

I'm not sure if anyone is still tackling this challenge or not, but sounds very interesting! I would like to challenge myself to achieve as many of these milestones as possible by the end of Summer. I have found since I joined SP in March that I really like the challenges, because they help my motivation. I'm not sure if I can do the sit-ups due to old car accident aches, but I will try- if not I can handle crunches and I will just do more of those!

If I could make a suggestion, get a massage and ask the therapist to work on the muscles between each rib. They get extremely tight during violent coughing. This will allow you to breath deeper. You will cough more right after the work, but it's short lived. It will also make you stronger for the push ups because your ribs will no longer be locked down. Good Luck!

What an awesome goal! Competition is a great motivator. I love to run, in fact I'm training for a mini-marathon in November. Pushups and situps will be a challenge. Good luck to all of you.

I've been doing modified pushups for the last 4 weeks. Today I did 6 real pushups without stopping. I waited a few seconds and did 4 more. I'm so excited.

Here's my first progress report. The last two times I ran, I ran 1.25 miles straight without stopping. The days I ran were March 13 and March 19. I have not ran since then until today. Today, April 9, I was just planning to run at least 1.25 mile but was hoping to get to 1.5 mile straight. I surprised myself and got up to running 2 miles straight without stopping. I've NEVER ran that far without stopping. To say the least, I'm ecstatic! I now know that running a 5K is definitely doable! Whoo-hoo!!

WOW, thanks everyone for your responses and positive feed back. So cool! I want to wish eveyone good luck in reaching their goals. As far as yours truly, I am still trying the cold weather has put a damper at times for training. But I am still doing good. Also the upper management has push back my test for another 2 months. So that will give me more time to kick this test! Everyone have a great and safe SPARK Day!

I am excited also! My husband runs while I ride the bike as I am telling him he is going to slow for riding. This gives me a good reason to get with the program and maybe I can run along side of him insead. The websites have been a great motivator! I'll join in the challenge. Running isn't a problem since I run road races, 25K coming up on May 9. pushups .......that will be the fun. Sit ups I think I will be ok. Sprinting will be ok.

I really need to start on the upper body workouts anyways. This will be a good motivater.

Wow! I'm so happy I found this team. I'm not 100% sure yet, still pondering the idea but I think I want to do this. There is a 30 km rum/walk around the Bay coming up in my area, March 31. I've never done anything like that before. I can do about 5 km in about an hour when I do my 5km charity events. I have no idea where to start to train. My goal is not to run but just to finish. Any tips?

Aside from that, learning to run check out these links. They have pod casts for your MP3 player and its free.

This link gives you a 9 week program from coutch potatoe to 5 km in 1/2 hour. Its awesome. It's not easy, in fact its taken me more then 9 weeks to get there but its doable and that's what's important.

I don't know if people are still posting to this thread, but I'll add my two cents worth. When I was training for a sprint triathlon, I had to be able to swim 500 yds, run a 5K (3.1 miles), and bike 12 miles. The race was cancelled, but I want to share my running training that worked for me.

At first, I was just walking 3 miles.

Then, change up walking with running (say, 4 minutes walk, 1 minute run). Then each week I decreased the walking and increased the running (either by 30 seconds or a minutes, depending on how my week was going).

It took very little time for me to actually RUN the whole 3 miles! If you set a goal of walk/running 3 miles in 30 minutes, you'll be surprised how quickly you progress.

When I watch the mileage and time on the treadmill, I can see if I need to pick up the pace, or if I'm ahead of time (in which case I can slow down if need be).

Hey, it worked for me...I eventually got my 3.1 mile time down to 27:30 before focusing on something else.

Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever.

Do any of you guys have any tips on learning to run? It's a goal for 2009 that I finally learn to run and yesterday I tried but got killer pains after 30seconds in my side. I did finish my 2 miles walking at fast as possible in about 30min and I was only able to do that by saying "the pain is good, the pain is good.." (I got some strange looks by the way). I'm more so wondering if I'm doing something wrong, like not using the right muscles or something. I try to control my breathing so I don't think that's the problem. Any tips I could get would be wonderful!!!

I'll do it! Well, I'm far from a runner, and I don't have space to sprint, but I'm in for the push-ups. And as soon as my chest muscles heal and I can lay down flat again,(killer bronchitis practically destroyed them from all the coughin'), I'm in for the sit-ups, too. Woohoo!

Keep it up, a little bit at a time. I can't get to the gym, but I work out in my room or the day room. Today, just stretch bands, plAnks, and will do some more weights and walking or stair lunges. I go back to Sunny CA on SAT for a month, so hopefully, I will get more real exercise in there, and then hit it hard when I get back up here the end of JAN. Most of the bad weather will be over by then.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY AND BLESSED NEW YEAR!

Let's set those goals NOW!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Just a litte update on my challenge. I feel back a little bit.

Today I did the mile and half on the treadmill in 23 mins. I really wasn't feelin it today but I jog and walk. I guess something is better than nothing.

Still doing ok on the pushups and situps, still not bold enough to try the sprint yet.

This challenge is basically to get myself into shape and to pass my departments requirements for me to keep my job. You can join at any time you feel ready to join. Take however long you need to get to these milestones. Train how you wish to train and before you know it you will be surpassing this challenge. Good Luck to you! You can do it!

Tell me how to join this challenge and tell me a little bit more about it. I was told yesterday and today that they do not think I have MS, but they do not know what it is. I am also told that I am overstressed, overworked, sleep deprived, and need to learn how to relax. Fancy that, when I have been on the road constantly for the last three and a half years, running a unit by myself, etc, etc. Plus being to the Middle East twice in the last 4 years.
I wonder how I could be stressed.

Wonderful. I was in the Marine Corps until 1999 and my fitness has truly dropped. I would like to get back to the point where I could run 3 miles in 21 minutes, do my pull-ups and sit-ups and still have enough energy to go on with my day. I am going to join this challenge just so I can feel like I have not lost all. It is really true that in order to get up to the required run and run time you have to do a little at a time. Starting with run/walk in one minute intervals. Before you know it you can run 2 minutes and walk only 1. It doesn't take long at all to build up to it. Good luck to all who join.

OK- PT Test Challenge:

I have been in the Army for 34 1/2 years and been taking the PT test that long. Although, when I came in, there was a five event test, that was more challenging: Shuttle run, Run, Dodge and Jump, (Killed you jumping a 4-5 foot ditch), overhead ladder, 1/2 mile run for females and I can't remember what else. It was not until 1980 that the current test came into being. I've Hip and Knee degenerative disease, Oust- Arthritis and some neurological problems, but I still run for the PT Test. I have been strength training since 1982 and much stronger than the average woman. I pulled in my 87 pound Halibut by myself, this August in a!

Do a little bit at a time. Do interval training (run for a minute or two with walk or slower jog for a couple minutes) I do this until I can run the whole do longer lengths. I do not start timing myself until the last couple weeks before the test. I can tell how I am improving. I also do not start sprinting until about the last week before the test. I can easily cut 2 minutes off my time in the last two weeks doing this. I sprint in the last 1/8th of a mile. I do pretty good for a lady pushing 60!

Good Luck, Keep it up, slowly but surely and you will do fine!

Thanks for the encouragement everyone.

Just an update on my progress so far.
I did the mile and half in 18 mins,
the push ups and situps not a problem I crushed both of those.
The sprint I have yet to try that.

This actually sounds like it might be fun to try....just to see if I can do it. I will probably have problems with the sprinting part (due to a lack of location), but I can join in on the rest! I will post as I get counts and such.

I am starting up a PT challenge for myself and if any one likes to join, you are more than welcome.
As you all may or may not know I am a Police officer and come this February 09. The upper management has mandated that all officers are required to take a PT Test.

1. Run 1.5 miles (2.41 km) -in 17:30 minutes.
2. Execute 21 push-ups -in 2 minutes.
3. Execute 29 sit-ups -in 2 minutes.
4. Sprint 300m -in 81 seconds.

So I am training myself to get myself into shape.
I am going to try to do this every day, or do my best every day.
I know I am going to start off slow and work my way up, if any one likes to join, feel free to tag along. I will be posting every day on my progress. See you all around!
