As you say if it is in the right context it can be OK...I'll certainly see the movie, of course he was the father of the current Queen... so it is one I should see.

I highly recommend the movie The King's Speech.
It is: a teacher movie, history movie, social worker/counselor movie all at the same time!
I don't use or care for the "f" word - and it's used here - but it works - so if you have children you don't want to hear the King of England use the "f" word -then see the movie without them!

I saw The Tourist the weekend it came out ~ Yum is accurate for Johnny Depp! I enjoyed the movie - and without giving it away - the ending leaves you wondering. Don't know if I'll ever get to Venice - so that was awesome too.

I loved Inception, especially in 3D. It's one of those movies that has so much going on that you could watch it 3 or 4 times and still find something new.

I want to see The Tourist with Johnny Depp (yum) and Angelina Jolie. Has anyone seen it?

'Eat Pray Love' was on the in flight movie as I flew back last week. I didn't put the head phones on.. my son who was sitting beside me and I made up our own words....made it an amusing movie.. probably nothing like the real one or the book though.

Best movie I've seen recently was "Inception"

Yes, live with Nicholas Cage. I actually liked him in this one.

I tried to watch Eat, Pray, Love, but kept dozing off. I "read" it on an audio book a couple of months ago and liked that better. I may try watching it again when I am more alert. emoticon

We saw Harry Potter this afternoon. We all enjoyed it, but DS kept complaining that it differed from the book too much. I think it was faithful to the concepts. Special effects were so good I didn't always realize they were special effects.

I have plans to see The Tourist next month when it comes out.

I recently saw Red - very good! Lots of shoot em up, blast em up - but more tongue in cheek - just kind of ridiculous
And Life as We know it - not bad - enjoyable chick flick

I really want to see Hereafter maybe Wednesday evening - as I don't have school on Thursday - Veteran's Day.

Thanks for the Cop Out review - we don't always have time to go to the movies - so I thought a thread like this would be helpful to sort out what's good and not so good, or what would suit various tastes.

Absolutely loved Alice in Wonderland - you really should see it in 3D too. Very enjoyable and I would bring the kids - the only thing that would be questionable for some people might by the smoking caterpillar and the slaying of the Jabberwokky, but even that wasn't too bad compared to some movies out there. The previews for Clash of the Titans had more violence.

Saw Inglorious Bastards over New Years - not realistic - too much violence for my taste - guess that's why I don't seek out Tarentino movies.

I watched 'Dragon Hunters' this weekend. It is a beautifully animated movie made in France, but with a decidedly Asian twist to it. Forrest Whitaker and Rob Paulsen provide the voices of the con-men who plan to be dragon hunters for the money Fortunately the niece of a real dragon hunter is on hand to help them out. This is not a little kid animated story, but teenagers and adults who like fantasy will love it. I certainly did.

It was fun to read this thread and see the movie progress since january. I really liked slumdog, as well. I bought the book on cd. It was the same in spirit, but had many different stories. Basicly it was like a sister story. The reader had that great musical Indian accent. A good read. Up was a real tear jerker. Very poinient. I loved both my sister's keeper and harry potter. Both well done and acted.

Went to see Public Enemies last night. Pretty good movie - lots of gun fire - but that's what you would expect. Just DON'T read the book first as I did.
For Johnny Depp fans - he does a fine job and looks so much better than as Captain Jack!

I don't know about Fly or Up, but I did watch "He's just not into You" last night. It was OK, not wonderful, or maybe I'm too old. The dating scenes seemed weird to me, and the ensemble bit was spread out too far. I would have liked it better with a lead character who was better fleshed out.

Has anyone seen Fly? I know it's a kiddie movie, but my kids keep talking it up, and I thought it might be fun to see in 3D. How about He's Just Not that Into You? It looks pretty funny, and the book was a lifesaver during the college years for my friends and I!

DD took me to the movies for Mother's Day - we saw and loved The Soloist! Jamie Foxx does an excellent job! And Robert Downey Jr. - well I have a new respect for him. Worth the price of admission - and should be seen on a large screen - you'll miss some of the effects on your TV!

I just saw Star Trek and loved it! I am such a geek that I actually GOT all the jokes. I laughed out loud at some of them. The action was good, the CG was excellent, the story better than some, and the characters spot on. Even the little romance between a couple of the favorites was perfect. (Original Series, Episode 2 - The Salt Monster, as precedence.) The movie opened up a whole new story thread for future movies as well.

I don't know if someone who is not a Trekkie will enjoy it as much, but I loved it. Anyone else?

I enjoyed Australia. It is not "great", but story is adequate and the scenery is wonderful. I saw it on DVD on my laptop and wished I had seen it on a large screen. It is better than the previews led me to believe. I think it is fairly accurate historically, but I did not do any research. emoticon emoticon

Carrying on with the theme. I saw the wrestler last night, and I really didn't think it would be a film i would enjoy from the trailer, but was convinced to watch it, and now I'm really glad I did. Mickey Rourke is excellent, I recommend it!

The best part of VickyChristinaBarcelona was the scenery. I think Penelope Cruz deserved her Oscar, I just didn't get into the film. I kept hoping one of the characters would learn something.

My son just brought me Australia, I'll have to find time to watch it this weekend. He works at a video store and can preview them before release. I get to preview the ones he doesn't want to see. I call him "my son in the movie industry".

Crissy, we are happy to listen to you. There is room here for lots of opinions. After a stressful day/week, we all like to laugh. We just may laugh at different things. Probably we should all be a bit more specific as to why we did or did not enjoy a specific movie since no film is all things to all of us. emoticon

Hooray! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I, too, talk about it and mention the words "best movie I've seen!"

Movie recommendations are tough at best because people have such different tastes. Glad this one was a winner! I hope it wins the Best Picture Oscar this year!

I saw it on saturday and I absolutely loved it! You were right about the harsh reality bit though, in some parts I did find it over whelming. I've been telling everyone that it's one of the best movies I've ever seen!

"Remember Red, hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."

"some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. Still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone"

"Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don't kill their husbands. They don't."

I'm anxious to hear what you think of slumdog. It's really harsh, but so is life in India's slums, so don't be surprised. However, it is well worth all of the ups and downs of the characters. I hope you love it!

I'm going to see slumdog millionarie this weekend so I'm glad you gave it a good review. I really want to see Seven Pounds too.

My family and I actually enjoyed Bedtime Stories - we laughed out loud. It won't win any awards, but I still liked it.

Seven Pounds is heart wrenching and, once again, Will Smith amazes!

The best movie I've seen in years, however, is Slumdog Millionaire. Beautifully filmed, stunningly acted, and all around gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Loved it. I'll own it when it hits DVD. Remember it's going to be harsh, though, in case you aren't familiar with the slums of India. There are some severely tragic moments throughout.

Ah, I just noticed this section. I can suggest not wasting your time seeing Bedtime Stories. A real disappointment. I have some teacher friends who went to see 4 Christmases expecting a romantic comedy. They were not pleased. emoticon

I just thought I'd add something for fun. I like to go to see a movie over the new year break. After talking to some friends and relatives I eliminated at least one movie because of the unexpected ending (I hadn't read the book). With so many of us I thought we could share our thoughts and opinions (without necessarily giving away the endings) about current movies - or if we are looking for something to use in our classrooms to enhance a lesson we could run it by our group.

To begin I'll share the movie I saw this afternoon "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". It is rather long 2hr 47m, but I would fully recommend it. Not necessarily for kids - not for content - just can't see a child maintaining their attention that long without lots of flashy action. I both laughed and cried. Let me know what you think.
