I will try to post a couple of goals to begin August. Just got back from vacation, so once I settle in I'll see what I can do.

I like your ideas for goals. I would really like to add another--loose 10 lbs before school starts. That is about 6 weeks here in Oregon. That is really do-able. It is time to jerk myself (and maybe others, as well) up and put in a solid effort to reach the next goal on the scale before the heckticness begins.

When school starts up, I am thinking I will need to prepare lunches the night before to save time in the morning and avoid just getting a school lunch. I know the school lunches will kill everything I have worked for this summer. I want to continue monitoring my intake as well. A major key to the goal.

Ok,
I have been negligent the past month and a half - overwhelmed with everything.
It's July 1 - If you are up for a summer challenge how about permanently adopting one healthy habit that will maintain this lifestyle.
Suggestions could be:

1. Add protein to breakfast - I use fat free greek yogurt on my oatmeal in the AM or I make a breakfast quesadilla with egg beaters and 1/4 cup low fat cheese and veggies.(I can have either made in 5-7 minutes on school mornings - it's doable.)

2. Try one new low fat / low calorie snack item a week to see what would work that you can take to school to be prepared when the cakes and goodies arrive in the Teacher's Lounge.( I could even set up a thread to keep suggestions all in one place so when we are feeling a little brain dead we can see what has worked for others.)

3. Once a week (at least) - post one positive statement about yourself. We get so involved with taking care of family and students we put ourselves on the back burner and generally don't do nice things for ourselves or acknowledge positives - When you take care of yourself physically and mentally you are more effective taking care of others!

Let me know - if you want to track any of these or just post in the discussion board - I've not had much luck with this team and tracking and that's ok - everyone's needs are different

I like the idea of packing a healthy lunch (we could share ideas) and skipping the cafeteria.

What should our summer challenge be?

I love the "leaving those goodies alone" goal! It is SO hard with all the wedding/birthday/retirement/baby cakes! Plus all the leftovers from volunteer teas and snacks, and PTA goodies that are brought in. Plus, we have poor Friday breakfasts, complete with cheesecake, bagels, cream cheese, brownies, cookies, brownies, you name it...temptations galore! I'm trying hard, but the pull for a new teacher is hard to resist!

protein sounds good, from tracking my nutrition I've discovered I don't eat enough protein.

But I'm personally trying not to eat the biscuits at break :)

Since protein helps keep us full longer, how about a "have a protein for breakfast" goal? I know when I eat cottage cheese or peanut butter (just 1 tbsp with nonfat yogurt) in the morning, I'm full much longer and can make it through my early mornings without craving the snacks that tend to line the staff lounge.

How about a goal to exercise daily, even add a few extra laps around the hall or the cafeteria or gym floor? We teachers often focus too much on what we must do for the kids and forget to do something extra for ourselves?

Plus, the ones about leaving school lunches and lounge goodies alone! Those are excellent!

Hello all,
Sparkpeople has this new feature to help us encourage you to improve and continue your new healthy lifestyles.
Over time we'll add other goals, but I thought I'd start with something we should all be doing anyway, but may not always.
If anyone has any suggestions for goals we should use, PLEASE - let us know and we'll set them up. It could be anything from what to eat, exercise, reading books or even doing things to take care of ourselves - I know I don't always do that and as teachers most of us are focused on our students and our own families that we take a backseat ourselves to our own care and needs.
Open to suggestions,
Frances
