Cleaning out your Resolution Closet

Summer is looming and as you look back to the beginning of the year you ask yourself: "Did I stick to my New Year's fitness resoluation? According to research found in the British Medical Journal, most women say "no." Only 40 percent of men and 28 percent of women stick with their resolution to make the new year a fitter one, says the British study. Regular exercise could reduce the chances of heart disease in both sexes by as much as 30 percent, yet researchers found that the biggest obstacle to fitness, especially for women, was not knowing how and when to incorporate fitness into their body schedules. Experts say that walking to work, Rollerblading and alternating workouts between walking and running (especially with a partner or group) were found to be the most successful ways to engage men and women in regular fitness.

------------------------------------

Keep fitness at the forefront of your daily routine, and nights spent tossing and turning could be behind you. Pepole who experience sleep disorders, such as periodic leg movements (PLM) or restless leg syndrome (RLS), can sleep easy with a little help from the treadmill, 20 minutes a day, at least three days a week, says a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports and Exercise, the scientific journal of the American College of Sports Medicine. As as alternative to sleep aids, exercise could earn you increased sleep time and quality, two things that, when sacrificed, could impact your sanity and overall fitness--post-workout muscle recovery and sleep are intricately linked.

---------------------

Grapes for your Joints

If the healthy bright color, antioxidant properties and sweet juicy flavor of grapes didn't have you picking them up before, now might be a good time to start, especially if you're active. When a group from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine fed grape powder to arthritic rats, they found the animals had less swelling and sensitivity to pain when being prodded. But take note: You might need the cart instead of the shopping basket - the rats were given the equivalent of 40 cups of grapes over four days! And eating that many might mean a different kind of pain.

The Big Gulp

A new study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition shows that cyclists, following at least 60 minutes of activity, have a better recovery response to a combination of liquid carbohydrates and protein versus refueling on carb-only drinks (think sports drinks).

Results of the study showed that the carbs-protein mix increased fat oxidation (the breakdown of fat) and improved overall athletic ability.

Your best bet for a carbs-protein hit? Low-fat chocolate milk, according to Tara Gidus, MS, RD, CSSD, board-certified specialist in sports dietetics and team dietitian for the Orlando Magic NBA team. "Chocolate milk is one of the best things to have after a workout, both for the protein in the milk and to replenish glycogen stores from the carbs in the chocolate."

Question of the Month for Oxygen Issue Spring 2009

Q: The more weight I lose and the more I eat clean, the fitter my body becomes - but I'm still retaining water. What can I do to minimize this naturally?

A: Exercise is one of the most important things to do so you can put your circulation to work. Avoid salted and processed foods. Make sure to drink at least five to six cups of water a day. There are some very mild natural diuretics that you can add to your diet: asparagus and ginger and the supplements juniper and dandelion. There are many causes of water retention, and some can be serious. You should discuss this with your physician before trying to self-mediate.

In a recent poll, Oxygen readers were asked, "On an average day, what is your typical workout time?" More than 2,500 readers responded and the majority, 34 percent, said that they usually exercise for 60 to 90 minutes. Thirty-one percent said they keep their workouts to about an hour and twenty seven percent typically work out for 45 minutes or less. Only eight percent of our readers said they exercise for more than 90 minutes at a time. We're always listening!

And this is what I'm about to start doing after all the gain listed below on my post. Or @ least I'm trying.

Clean Eating Checklist for the New Year

1. Make the Commitment

Clean eating requires commitment. You should be realistic with yourself because eating clean takes work. It is not easy but it will become easier in time. Eating clean as a temporary weight loss solution will only frustrate you and make you give up. Commit to it as a lifestyle change and it will become a habit rather than a chore.

2. Expect to Cook

You cannot eat clean unless you begin cooking your own meals. Unless you have someone who will do it for you, you will be preparing your breakfast, lunches, and dinners. Cooking isnít hard and can actually be quite fun.

3. Gather Recipes

The best part about clean eating is that you will not run out of recipes! Check out the clean eating recipes section.

4. Buy a Good Set of Tupperware

Having a decent set of tupperware will make eating clean so much easier. You can portion out your meals and have them ready to go. They are especially great for packing lunches. This set received good reviews and is priced well: Rubbermaid Premier Food Storage Container Sets

5. Clean Out Your Fridge and Pantry

You will need to get rid of all junk. Read the ingredients on the labels of food products in your fridge and pantry. If you canít pronounce them, chances are you shouldnít be eating them.

6. Plan Your Meals

You can plan out your meals for the entire week. This will make it easier when its time to grocery shop and you wonít have to rack your brain wondering what to eat. It will already be planned out for you.

7. Invest in Gym Equipment or Join a Gym

A good clean eating program involves some exercise. You can either buy exercise equipment such as dumbbells, stability ball, exercise bands, etc., and/or join a local gym.

Are you planning to eat clean for the new year or have you already been doing it? What would you add to the checklist?

5 for 25 Challenge

Some people might not know, but Women's History Day and International Woman Day takes place in March. In this challenge, we're going to combine that with our goal of trying to lose weight.

For this challenge, in order to win, all you have to do is post some achievement that a woman has done whether its Joan of Arc or your mother or just encourage others on the team to lose weight or both. There is a prize in this challenge. You can either get something from SparkPeople or a e-gift Certificate (Visa) in the amount of $25. For the person who loses the most weight, which has to be above 4 lbs, they will be eligible to receive the prize. Its a requirement that you post @ least 3 times per week also. They must do this three times each week. On April 4th, everything will be tallied up and the winner will be announced not long after.

This week you will in with your SW (starting weight) for the challenge and your goal weight.

You report each week as far as your weight goes. As for the three comments, they need to reported 3 times any time in that particular week.

1st Week:
March 1 -7:

2nd Week:
March 8-14:

3rd week:
March 15-21:

4th Week:
March 22-28:

5th Week:
March 29 - Apr 4th:

You can weigh in @ any time within that particular week. Sunday thru Saturday was included in each period so you could weigh in on any particular day you want.
