Today is my first day with this team, glad I came across it...
I've known I have Acid Reflux for about 5 months & I'm learning
my triggers, I do have the losing voice or hoarsness with burning
in my throat, the burning in my chest I sometimes get seems my
meds don't work but I am making changes in how I eat & how
I cook what I eat.
After reading some of these post here I learned that
Post Nasal drip is part of having Acid Reflux I didn't know but I
did wonder why I was having Post Nasal drip so often.
So grateful for this team for the things I'm learning & to know
there are so many others who suffer from this, I don't feel so
alone with it now.

I'm Not Where I Need to Be...BUT...Thank God I'm NOT Where I Used to Be!

Consumed orally, the aloe-vera juice handles and lowers the irritation related to ulcerative colitis. Typically the juice is used a lot as an immunostimulant and it is being studied for the efficiency to prevent most cancers in people too. Topical ointment are developed using an aloevera base for the therapy for herpes. These types of functions also assist in the treatment of skin psoriasis and in many cases gingivitis and cavity enducing plaque.

Aloevera juice has many different tested anti-bacterial and anti-fungal attributes. It can be used in herbal supplements applied to help stop ringworm or tinea causing fungus. The particular complete levels of active ingredients including C-glycosides besides other lectins allows aloevera. It is really a widely used anti inflammatory, antioxidising and wellness restoring agent. Concentrated lotions and creams are designed to fix abrasions, stings and lacerations, burning from the sun, eczema and pimples. The sap and also gel for this herb is usually taken for stopping acid reflux disorder, yeast infection, Chron's disease, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, symptoms of asthma, hay fever and also shield our body system from toxins.

The benefits of natural aloe vera are popular today so we can strongly recommend its usage, but you should definitely talk to your health care provider first. In some instances some people can react diversely to natural aloe vera.

The difficulty breathing is from my vocal cords not closing properly because there is not enough tissue. The Dexilant is for the reflux. I do have lung scarring but no one knows why as I have never smoked. If I become too active my vocal cords stiffen and restrict the passage of air,

A couple questions.... having a hard time breathing is from the reflux or the stricture? And Dexilant is for which symptom? I have a hard time breathing also but I attributed it to smoking which I did stop over 4 yrs. ago but my breathing never changed. I hope your tests come back to your liking. We can only take so much right?

I do have a decent though soft voice most of the time. My voice is very strained and difficult to use when I exercise and if the temps are out of the 65-80 degree range. This also affects my breathing. I am going to ask my Dr. to increase my Dexilant to 2x daily. I hear back from my swallow tests this week and hope no more damage has been done.

I also lose my voice because of reflux. I didn't know it could get as bad as yours. Mine isn't constant. Only when I sing at church or talk a little more than usual. I'd better bring this up with my GI!!!

I have paralyzed vocal cords and must do vocal therapy daily. The acid reflux destroyed the tissue in my vocal cords, they cannot close fully. I have had my esophagus stretched twice and now am having more tests because I am having more trouble swallowing. Best wishes to you all.

My husband and I were told to never use baking soda. We both used it because it really gets rid of acid. But a nurse, not a doctor, told us it masks a heart attack long enough to maybe be too late and on a smaller note, baking soda messes with the electrolytes in your system. I also can,t sing in church. I had a scope done Thurs. 8/16 and was told I was an "acid volcano"! I've had this problem for so many years that it's time to ask for someone elses input besides my doctors'. Someone, HELP!

As a teacher, my voice comes and goes. I didn't realize it could be from acid reflux!

As a General Music teacher, reflux is a nuisance. After reading other posts I can relate to the throat clearing after eating, difficulties singing after eating, and losing my voice. I appreciate the comments shared here. emoticon

Hi everyone. I'm new at commenting at a blog. Well, I too have acid reflux and I only have the situation at night when I go to sleep. I don't like taking meds but do when it acts up. I found that since I changed my eating habits to eating fruits and vegetables and eating smaller portions, I am now sleeping better. I do believe that drinking Aloe Vera really helps this sickness and I know the doctors do not like to hear this because they want you to come back to them for more meds. I find that when I eat tomatoe sauces, spices, and especially cranberry juice, it makes it worst. I too am unable to sing in church. I too thought I was waking up in the middle of the night because of post nasal drip. LOL. But found out that it's GERD. I also have a hernia in my esophocis, OK, I know I spelled that wrong. LOL. Sorry. But with this, this is the main reason I have this sickness. So what I do is I elevate myself with two pillows in order to sleep better and do drink Aloe Vera.
FYI - I copied this from http://www.ehow.com/about_5087404_benefits
-aloe-vera-juice.html

Most of the claims of aloe vera juice's effectiveness relate primarily to improved digestion and regularity, increased energy levels and disease prevention, which are thought to be the result of aloe vera juice's detoxification and cleansing properties

Benefits of Ingesting
Aloe vera juice has been shown to improve oral health and hygiene. The plant's antioxidant properties help preserve the integrity of the mouth and gums, providing effective relief for cold sores and reducing the incidence of gingivitis and plaque, all according to dentaleconomics.com.

The plant juice is also believed to accelerate healing of minor burns, abrasions and skin irritations, with its ability to assist in cell regeneration and collagen formation. These qualities also provide an added anti-aging benefit.

And aloe vera juice has been shown to treat ulcers by detoxifying the body and cleansing the colon, helping the digestive tract work more efficiently.

Effects on Immune System
There is evidence that aloe vera juice strengthens the immune system and prevents illness by working as an antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agent.

It may help maintain energy levels and control weight by regulating blood sugar, and its cleansing properties eliminate substances in the body that cause lethargy and fatigue, which can affect body weight.

Aloe vera also contains a variety of nutritional elements responsible for producing healthy skin and countering the effects of aging.

I do hope this helps each and everyone one of you guys. Bye - Nancy Ortiz Wong

YES! I am currently at a whisper :( I have seen the Specialist several times. I am about to try combination eating by Sherry Brescia. Look her up as she promises great results. I have nothing to lose except my voice. Swollen voice box due to the acid has caused my to lose my voice. However I am sad that this has not been taken more seriously...?...Will advocate for myself next appt. Take Care!

I was diagnosed with LRD or LDR?? I only felt the reflux on evenings when I ate tomatoe soup or a marinara sauce in the PM. Apparently it ahs been going on for quite a long time. I am currently doing tongue exercises to improve my swallowing and it has helped a bit - I am now also taking 2 Zantac at night before bed and the Nexium before breakfast and dinner
Wishing all a good nights rest emoticon

When I was diagnosed as having GERD It wasn't because I felt acid. I've never felt the least bit of heartburn. It was because I had a weird undulating feeling going up and down my esophagus. It is hard to describe what it felt like but it was very uncomfortable. The doctor told me about acid reflux and asked about heartburn--sorry; never had it.

But, I have lost the ability to sing well. It was just 2 weeks ago that I discovered that that was because of GERD. I thought I was crazy or something that all of a sudden I couldn't sing in church. It scared me. I thought I had a tumor or something on my larynx; so glad it was just GERD.

So I've been on Prilosec for awhile now and I only have problems at night. Now I feel the acid creeping up my esophagus and making me have to constantly clear my throat as I try to sleep. TUMS helps with that, or ROLAIDS.

I'm having another endoscopy this week to see if there is any damage going on in there.

I'm glad we have this site on SP to talk about GERD because I've never really talked about it before. I find the input here very helpful.

I have the same issues and was told it is a form of acid reflux that effects my larynx and that area. My doc has me on Nexium and Zantac and it is sooo much worse without it.
I thought I was crazy but they discovered it was real. It takes more air for me to talk due to damage to my vocal cords from the acid. I did not even know I ahd acid reflux as I rarely feel the burn or pain that is usually associated with it. I have some swallowing issues as well and they ahve gien me some tongue exercises to help. Will let you know how it works out as it is all new to me.
Wish they could give me something for the coughing at night though .... oh well One step at a time.

How do you use the baking soda? You just swallow it? How much? With water? I am curious to try it. Thanks!

My point was that I took care of the problem (drugs), stopped eating and drinking trigger foods and lost weight. I have the acid reflux meds, but I haven't take any in a couple of weeks. I am singing now and I can hold my own as a soprano.

This topic is really interesting and replies are so informative. i thought i was the only one who coughed and lost her voice from GERD. With me, it is usually worse early in the day and late at night. People say, "oh it's post nasal drip or something else". I've long suspected it was the acid reflux. I will try saline neti pot again. Thanks. So sorry for the singers in our group.

I've had the laryngitis and lost part of my vocal range. What I did

get on the acid reflux medicine
raise the head of the bed
chew gum (spearmint seems to best)
I had to give up alcohol and milk

I'm almost off acid reflux medicine, I'm singing soprano in a choir

Good Luck!

I, too, am a singer with problems losing my voice. It hasn't been a problem so much recently. I did learn that for me it is triggered by stress (including stage fright), unusual foods that aren't mentioned anywhere in the common "trigger foods" (even white rice, since it caused the stomach to expand and bloat), and also singing... a voice teacher told me that when you sing, the very muscles you need to support are also squeezing your stomach and pushing the acid up into your throat... just great. LOL Also it didn't matter how early I had my dinner, or keeping portions small, etc, etc. Strangely, when I would stay up late (2am) and wake up late (10am), I usually wouldn't experience the symptoms.

What I found helpful was Tums Dual Action... I think it comes in a bottle of 25 or 50, for maybe 7-12 bucks. The regular Tums don't work for me, but this one did. My symptoms would come and go, and I couldn't pinpoint one single cause, but rather I did discover multiple triggers as I said. I went to an ENT once, who looked at my throat for ten minutes and told me to take tums... and charged me $175. I have never experienced the burning sensation, just the loss of voice, dry feeling in throat (he said it's the fumes that cause it), and sometimes a lump when I swallow, which I guess is scar tissue.

Since this condition has been unpredictable, I chose to just not really pursue singing, but try and find a different career instead. It is frustrating, but I try to see it as an opportunity to develop other talents and interests.

I am glad to find others who have this same issue!!! Up until now, I was the only one I knew. Stay strong, guys.... that is the great thing about Spark, everyone is very supportive. You are never alone!

I ended up with throat therapy last year. My vocal chords were covered with mucous and burned. My therapist recommended a neti pot which works very well. I don't like the pot it is messy but they have the same wash with a squeeze bottle that I find truly effective at cleasing the sinuses. It helps the throat.

Hi, I'm new to this group. I am a semi-professional singer who started having problems with hoarseness with singing about 7 months ago. It got bad enough to the point where I couldn't get through a rehearsal without starting to lose my voice halfway through. As a teenager, I had a brief stint with GERD that was under control with Tagament, and then it went away. About 6 years ago, I started having problems with persistent heartburn, and have been on Prilosec, sometimes twice a day. Then it got progressively worse, and I've had substantial issues over the past 7 months. Now, I've seen two ENTs, and have been diagnosed with severe acid reflux -- both GERD and LPR. I am now on Nexium in the morning, Prilosec before dinner, and Zantac before bed, and have to try to watch what I eat. I am also in voice therapy now, with a speech-language pathologist who's also a singer. I am seeing some improvement, but it's slow going. It's had me very upset, because singing is one of the few things in life that brings me any sanity. Well, so does chocolate, but I can't have it anymore. But that's one of the reasons I re-joined SparkPeople...because I need to get my health under control, and that includes learning how to eat right (and how to alter the diet for GERD), and loose extra weight I've been carrying around for too long. Very frustrating. :/

My voice changed 2 years ago which apparently was the only symptom I had of acid reflux. Unfortunately, I didn't listen to my doctor when she prescribed acid reflux meds because she didn't explain to me what one had to do with the other. I've also been dealing with chronic post nasal drip which apparently can be caused by the reflux. I used to sing and haven't been able to sing becaue of the hoarseness of my voice. I'm praying that with changes in my diet that I will begin to feel/hear an improvement. I've been taking prevacid for the last week which seems to be helping some with my voice but I am still experiencing heart burn (milder) so over the next 2 weeks, I am eliminating all foods that may contribute to it. I'll let you know how it works out for me!

Hi,

I'm new to the group. I'm amazed at home many people have Acid Reflux. Today I'm currently recovering from an EGD that has determined that most likely my only "throat" problem may be acid reflux. I've had a sore throat for a year now. I was put on meds and then had that doubled both since October. I changed much of what I ate back then and then got a lot more strict with my eating in January. Nothering is helping. Friday I will undergo an Upper GI where I will drink something that radiology will trace. From what I hear, there is one more test they may have to do to determine the severity and what can be done to help. I met with a person who is an Ayruvedic specialist in early January. She has taught me a lot. I highly recommend finding one in your area and/or reading "The 3 Season Diet" by John Douillard. It's a great book. It's great to know that maybe I can be of help with the things that I've learned.

When I was first diagnosed with GERD it was because I would frequently lose my voice and would wake in the middle of the night chocking. My MD had be do a throat study and found that my vocal cords were hyper-spasmic (meaning...opening and closing constantly and faster than normal). He determined this was happening because of the constant reflux trying to enter into my throat. He put me on the purple pill (sorry, can't remember the name right now) for 2-3 weeks and that helped considerably...from that point on I was able to determine what I was eating that was causing the reflux, up until that point I didn't realize I was experiencing reflux.

My recommendations: go see a specialist and get diagnosed and on meds to get it under control...then begin watching how much food you eat (make sure to only eat one serving size) and watch what you eat, especially to determine your trigger foods. If you find that you eat something and start clearing your throat within 2-3 minutes of eating it...it may be a trigger food.

good luck!

Life is nothing without love!

Hi, im new to the group, does any one else experience this?! I've lost my voice for over a week and notice that my acid refulx more effects the back of my throat, it gives a burning sensation where it's hard to speak... very uncomfortable and painful and i watch what i eat. I have noticed it is especially triggered by white wines and light sodas. I don't have much of either, but even a few sips burn... any thoughts?!?!

Thanks! emoticon
