I use to eat a lot more meat than I am trying to eat now. But because of the gallbladder, fatty liver and kidney issue I was told to cut back on my meats, especially the fattier ones. And also to try to avoid greasy fried foods. I was suppose to up my veggies and fruits, eat more nuts and whole lean foods. But now because of the IBS issue, they said to watch eating too much fruits and veggies as that can cause problems too. And limit and cook my broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and some other veggies. So I guess I am still trying to find a happy medium with it all, and trying to do a lot more yoga and relaxation to try to deal with the stress.

I think that some of that is what I am having problems with. I am currently trying to go lower carb since I had a high A1c and have to get it down. Also I keep being hungry all the time if I eat regular amounts of carbs. But low-carb means high fat, so I worry that will cause a problem. I am now reading a book by Dr. Bernstein that is for low-carb and he said that protein will turn to sugar in the blood which is why they do low-carb and high fat. (They do have low-carb/high protein, but I haven't found that yet). So I don't really know what to do. I have lost weight with the lower carbs and haven't really paid much attention to the fat and protein ratio from that. I think I haven't gone really high fat, but higher than usual by just a little bit. Pretty much have had the same amount of protein as usual.

LEGGSMALON, My bf had his gallbladder removed yrs ago, and he has problems with fatty meals going right through him. Some times he gets through the meal and then ends up running for the bathroom as soon as he gets home. Other times he has to use the bathroom at the restaurant. But he loves his meat, especially greasy fatty meals, like BBQ any thing, steaks, ribs, fried chicken. He loves his junk food like chips, candy and soda too. And he tends to eat too much at once, big portions of every thing but fruits and veggies. Loves to go to all you can eat places too. And he loves to cook that stuff at home too.

Could you be having problems with the fat in the meal? Or does it happen even with really lean meats and any other foods?

I have frequent need to urinate too due to a narrow urethra that makes it hard to completely empty my bladder. And stress makes both the bladder issue and the ibs issue really flair up bad.

So I too try to completely empty myself several times before going any where so a to hopefully not have to look for a bathroom at for either. As I as so have a shy bladder that doesn't like to go in strange places, so it can take me a while to go too, even if I really feel like I need to go really bad. Luckily my bf has just got use to it. And knows that I might have to find a bathroom where ever we go, and I might be in there a long time too. And at night I will probably get up in the middle of the night at least once if not more because of my bladder.

Right now I am trying to help my sister sort through a storage unit and get rid of a lot of stuff and take some of it to my place to hold for her. She doesn't drive, doesn't own any type of transportation any more, has lots of health issues herself, so I have been doing it myself. And several times I have got in there and spread thing all out side making piles of stuff to donate, throw away, recycle and bring home, just to end up with an IBS attack and have to try to rush to throw it all back into the unit and lock it back up and then try to rush all the way to the other end of the storage lot to the bathroom. And a couple of times I didn't make it in time. So now when I go, I keep baby wipes, a change of pants or shorts, underwear and stuff like that with me in case I end up having to clean up a mess. It is so embarrassing, but there is nothing that I can really do about it. And like you I try not to put any thing in me first, and if I am already having issues like today, then I just don't bother going as I know it will just probably happen again while I am there. My sister has a lot of the same health problems as I do and so did my mom.

I don't have a husband who doesn't want to go anywhere with me anymore, but I have had the problems of having to go even when I haven't eaten anything or where there are no restrooms available. Cassie (dog) doesn't care if I have a problem or not. People usually don't want to be with me when I go anywhere, though.

Thanks for the info, I was still having problems again today with it. I remember as my mom got older she couldn't eat the seeds in a lot of things like cucumbers, tomatoes, and strawberries and more. I decided not to do any V8, salad, or other veggies today as today seemed worse than yesterday.

Couple things you mentioned besides stress (which I totally understand, too). Sugar/carbs can often be a trigger for me. I would guess that preservatives would, too. One thing I have often had a lot of problems with is fruits and vegetIables and that has changed through the years, too. Eating very much fruit at a time will cause problems. My aunt had the same problem so it seems to be genetic with me (also others in the family did, too, but not my Mom). I use to have a lot of problems with cantaloupe cause I would eat half of one for breakfast or something. Then I could not eat lettuce, carrots, celery, beans. Now I have tried eating different vegetables and find I cannot eat eggplant for certain. Then on the other side (gas) I cannot have broccoli or often cabbage. I also can't have bread but seem to do okay with tortillas so I think that is all the yeast. But if you have increased the fruits and vegetables very much, that could set something off and it might help to start off a little slower with them.

I definitely understand being afraid to leave the house, too. Today I headed to a pet event (mainly to get Cassie's nails trimmed) and had to head for someplace to find the restroom. I just made it, too. Was taken off the Metformin for my diabetes, then got my A1c results and they were the highest ever (though I understand why and that was my fault for eating sweets too much last year) so if that doesn't go down I will have to double the Metformin instead of getting rid of it. I am trying to really cut down on the carbs now.

Besides stress, I have no idea what is causing my IBS. I know that greasy food, spicy food, too much garlic, some times chocolate, and some times tomato sauce can give me heart burn and indigestion. I know that I have allergic reactions to shell fish where my throat will try to swell closed, and some times processed shredded coconut can do the same. Where as raw coconut doesn't seem to bother me, so maybe it is the sugary powder that is on the shredded coconut or the preservatives that they put on it? I know I am allergic to sulfa drugs, to molds, mildew, most grasses, weeds, shrubs, trees, dander, dust, smoke and a lot more. But as to what causes my IBS bloating, cramping and Constipation? Maybe it would be the same foods that can give me indigestion and heartburn? And would those same food then later be the ones to give me the IBS diarrhea? Or would that be another list of foods that I would be looking to elminate? I have had the problem off and on for years, but never tried to figure out what might be triggering it besides stress. That's what I know always started the worse cases of it. Stressful jobs have triggered it, and then that in turn made another problem for the stress of the job. And like others have said, the companies don't care that you have a legitimate health problem. They just trump it up as another reason to hold against you. And will do stuff to make it harder to do your job so that they can fire you for not doing the job. I have worked at a couple of different jobs where every thing was fine and then a new supervisor will come in and for what ever reason take a disliking to me and decide to make life hard on me. And then the IBS kicks in and makes the matters worse. And then they start to threaten with warnings, and threaten to fire me. And going to their drs, arbitrators, counselors doesn't help because they are always on the big companies side, they are not going to bite the hand that feeds them to help you. So I just ended up leaving before they could fire me. Then I would take some time off, and calm, and heal my body before trying to find another job. Or other times when it happened is when I was dealing with the stress of taking care of the financial matters for my mom after my dad passed away. And then again less then a year later when she passed away too and I had to take care of a lot of her financial matters, and deal with my old sister and older brother that were both fighting over the money and other inheritance. Or other stressful stuff going on in my life. Right now I am not working as I was laid off, and I think the stress of dealing with EDD to get my unemployment benefits, dealing with trying to get set up with low cost or free health care, having my car constantly breaking down, and the BF's car doing the same, and now some one seems to be tampering with my mail box and stealing my mail, and I think that is what has started it all over again after not really bothering me for several years. The bloating, cramping and constipation I can handle, that doesn't really bother me or worry me. But the diarrhea is the one that really throws me for a loop. I makes me afraid to leave the house some times. Afraid I might have an accident and not be able to get to a bathroom fast enough. Some times I am lucky and it just happens first thing in the morning and then I am fine the rest of the day, or until late at night, and other times I can have to run to the bathroom several times during the day, I just never know what is going to happen. It happened to me Monday morning, but luckily by that afternoon it was fine and I was able to go to my doctors appointment that was already scheduled weeks ago with out any problems. But since it was a new topic to talk to them about, they were more interested in talking about my blood pressure that is doing fine, and about my weight loss, as they were disappointed that I hadn't lost a lot more weight since my last visit. But they did say that maybe it was all the fruits and veggies I had been eating lately, as I had just started to eat a whole lot more of it trying to fill up on it instead of carbs and protein. And then late that night it happened again and then early the next day it happened and then I was fine again and was able to run errands. But then every day after that it happened and just seemed to get worse. Yesterday I was nauseous with it all day too, so I hardly ate. I had it again today too, but at least it was just in the morning and they I wasn't nauseous like Friday. So I was able to eat more normally today. I hope that tomorrow it will be better?

I usually would be keeping my protein down to something like 3 oz meat and then try to keep my carbs lower. Fat often got a little over. But then I ended up with less than 1000 calories when I was tracking. So just don't know what to do for that. Most veggies cause me problems. I like fruits, but they get high in carbs so can cause problems. At least I don't have so many problems as my friend does. She had blood tests for allergies and can hardly eat anything. Most of the things for gluten free she can't even eat and can't eat the gluten, either.

I usually have oatmeal for breakfast that is suppose to be really good for IBS. My lunch can be trail mix with fruit in it, an apple, prunes, raisins, cranberries, blue berries, carrots, salad, peanut butter, or any mixture of those type of things. Dinner is what ever my boyfriend cooks or brings home, so I don't control it as much. But I will control my portions of it now, and some times I will skip what they are having and have a big salad, or veggies, or fruit, or tuna, or peanut butter instead, especially if they are eating some thing that I know I shouldn't eat like fried chicken, or BBQ what ever. Other times I just try to pull the skin off of it, or knock the sauce off of it, or just eat very little of it. I completely gave up soda, I don't put salt on any thing, as I know that a lot of times he probably already added it to it. I gave up chips for low calorie popcorn or low calorie flavored rice cakes. But even those I try not to eat of a lot of because of all the additives and preservatives, I am trying to switch to just eating trail mix when I want something a little salty, and trail mix or fruit for sweet. Well all my best to you always.

So sorry to hear it, I know I have heard so much conflicting stuff too, that it is hard to know what to do. I have heard that high protein can be hard on the liver and kidneys especially if you have gallstones. And fat is a no, no for gallstones, along with greasy fried foods, and too much red meat. I am suppose to try to stick with grilled chicken breast, and fish, lean pork mostly for my protein and try to keep it to a 3 oz serving at meals. Also nuts are okay for me, and are even suppose to be good for the gallstones.

Janette,

Sorry your IBS has started up again. I am certainly trying to not have to take the Immodium, but it never wants to work out that way.

I saw the doctor this week and she still thinks that my pains are from lack of exercise because the CT scan didn't really show anything. I also have osteopenia, so now she has me taking Tums for calcium, along with Vitamin D. I am wondering how much the Tums will help or hinder the IBS. Also taking a fiber supplement, but I need to find a different one since the one I have does the horrible expand in your drink and not be completely dissolved in it. Just about choked today taking this one and it was only 1/8 tsp. Having diabetes is making it hard for me to figure things out. They say low carb and higher fat for the diabetes, but that seems to irritate the gall bladder problems. I have usually been doing higher protein, lower carb, but now everyone is saying that will hurt the kidneys. So I have pretty much given up trying to figure that out and guess I will have to get up and start exercising more (which I am terrible at). The higher protein based on chicken, eggs and such has seemed to work so far except for the IBS, though. She also took me off my diabetes med since that one has the side effect of causing diarrhea, so I really have to start the exercising and be careful of the carbs.

I was told long ago that taking Imodium, pepto bismol, stool softeners, metamucil and such can make your body get use to taking it and then you could end up in a vicious cycle of needing one thing to go and another to stop constantly. I was told to do natural things like oatmeal to keep regular, and or prunes or prune juice. And bananas, rice, and toast to help with runs. And that yogurt, and probiotics, and, acidophilus can help keep your stomach healthy too.

I was also told to be careful of muscle relaxant medicines like Alieve as they can also relax you colon muscles too much and make it easier for you to have diarrhea and/or wet farts.

As for pains on the right side, I was diagnosed with gallstones a few yrs ago and never had any pains with it at first except for indigestion and heart burn that I didn't know was from it, as at first I didn't even know that there was anything wrong with me. But last summer I hurt my oblique muscles on my right side and that made me have pain on my upper and lower rib cage area of my right side. Especially if I was trying to twist to do Zumba, or turn to back up my truck, or bending over doing laundry, or getting into or out of chairs or bed. And I couldn't sleep on my right side any more either which I usually did. Well it took months for that to go away. I would take it easy and try not to twist or bend and it would start to feel better. And then the next time I did laundry or had to drive the truck it would start all over again, so I just couldn't get over it. I finally got so that I could twist and bend and drive the truck again, but I never got completely over the discomfort in my upper right side, or was able to sleep on that side again. Now they are telling me that it was probably a combination of the gallstones, and fatty liver, and the injured oblique. So looks like as long as I have the fatty liver problem and gallstone issue, I will probably have discomfort in my right side. They just keep telling me to change my diet and lose the weight and hopefully it will all work itself out. I have already started to really watch what I eat, really limited or avoid fatty, fried foods, fatty meats, processed foods, and switched to eating as much whole foods as possible and as little junk food or fast food as possible. I was about 170 when I started SP last May and I have already lost just over 20 lbs, and I am still working to lose at least 10-20 more. And now my IBS has decided to start acting up again too after I had it pretty much under control for some time now.

ISLAYY, you are definitely not alone. I have had to do the same thing and will take Immodium before doctor appointments and other places I need to go. I also have a bottle of them in my purse so that if I start feeling like there could be a problem or if I decide I want to go somewhere and eat something on the way I can take them. Then have the other problem for about a week. So frustrating.

I have had to cancel many functions because of sudden onset of IBS Symptons. It has gotten to the point if I have a commitment that I cannot change, I take Immodium tablets before leaving the house. The only problem is, I find that I have constipation problems from the Immodium. For the last few months, it seems that I am either running for the bathroom or cannot go at all.
It really is a most frustrating illness.
I did get some tips from the message boards and of course it helps to know that I am not alone. emoticon

Thanks for the information on the gall bladder and stones. The CT scan I had showed "slight inflammation" and he didn't mention stones at all. Still, I get really sharp pains in the right side of my abdomen to the point I am about screaming (and have a couple times). Now I am getting pains in the right side of my back, but it is usually when I am trying to turn around and see if there is anyone coming when I am driving. Mostly it is just a pain on my ribcage that stays all the time, but not as bad as the others. So I am not sure if it is a gall bladder problem, but I think it is. I hate to have to go through a surgery again, especially after I just had surgery in September. But I might have to to get rid of this pain.

The bathroom situation. I had it all map out. Malls. Restaurants

Then one day on the highway was a hold up for two hours. Als another time in the snow got in the ditch. No washrooms. I tell you. I prayed and prayed. And the good Lord helped me.

Now with new laws your not allowed to get out on a highway to go bathroom in Canada.

So my doc said. Wear depends if your on the highway routs. I mean we could not get off.

So man for years. The bathroom I lived in. I got to a point. I even bought my own pretty smelling spray to spray for the person coming in after me. That is the least I could do..

You do anything to cause know embarrassment. Been there.

I had gallbladder out years ago. And 30 stones from it.

They told me back then it was B.S.

Also I have diverticulitis which is infection too.

So if your doc has suggested the test. Go for it.

Just make sure they press hard enough when scanning it or Ultra sound. As back then I was heavy. So it never showed.

Then two weeks later. I was sent to another hospital where they pressed right down in the area and knew it was the stones.

I had the operation.

The specialsit said to me. Here is your prove in a jar was 30 stones.

Oh I feel for you.

That pain is more then one can bear.

I pray your going to get help soon..

My friend's doctor put her on Xantac instead of the Prilosec. She said it wouldn't shut down her gut as much. My Oncologist said something about trying Prilosec for me (can't remember what for, but I think so that I could take aspirin without it eating my stomach like it does) and I told him after what it did to my friend there was no way. Of course, it might shut down my gut enough that I could leave the house without having to run to the nearest restroom.

Does anyone know what gall stones or other gall bladder problems would do towards causing more IBS problems? He has ordered a CT scan for me because of both the pains on the right side that indicate possible gall stones and a sharp pain I have been getting on the other side. If it wasn't for the pain on the left it would just have been an ultrasound. Plus he has ordered a TSH because when I do lose weight I can only get down to 200 and no lower.

I wouldn't make it if I did know where every bathroom on the route was. It hits that suddenly.

My friend has been reading about leaky gut syndrome and candida (they are both in the same book) and has been trying to use the diet from there. She has fibro and they had her on Prilosec, anti-depressant, muscle relaxants and who knows what all else. She has gotten off the Prilosec and anti-depressants because both are listed as causes of leaky gut syndrome. So are NSAIDs, which she had often had to take. She said she was really sick for a while going off the Prilosec, but since she started this she has lost 10 pounds of inflammation. Another thing she has stopped is the coffee she used to drink. Instead she will have herbal tea or water and she has quit eating bread. She is bringing her book tomorrow for me to see and is meeting me at the doctor's so I am going to ask my doctor about that. I don't know that I can follow the thing completely, but I'm going to try to at least do some of it.

I had the same problem with bathrooms and knew where every one was on my routes. Since I have been making sure I get 25-30 grams of fiber a day by eating Fiber One cereal. I also use Digestive Advantage for IBS and I also use a fiber tablet sometimes. Greek yogurt is also helpful for me. Of course with IBS there is always that element of surprise! emoticon

I can understand being stressed out going downtown when they don't have restrooms there. You have to have some money with you to buy something and you have to buy it first before you can use a restroom. I usually don't have time for that.

I never seem to have the warning to stay home when I don't feel good. I will be feeling fine and then it will hit all of a sudden.

It is a fear of mine to be caught in public without a restroom. I make sure I know where they are. And if I feel an attack coming on, I stay home. It stresses me out to go downtown because there really aren't public bathrooms or what if I get stuck in traffic??

I would check out the restrooms upon arriving at a new place. Also, I would make sure I had my purse with me so that I didn't get catch short with no toilet paper.

All the places I go to I know where they are, and for new places it's the first thing I make sure I know where they are!! emoticon

When the kids were little I knew where all the restrooms were for them when we were out. Now I am thankful for having this information for me!

I have also had to figure out where there are places I can stop for a pit stop. I think the police sometimes wonder about me because one of the places I've found is a police station that is on the way to the hospital.

I have been carrying an emergency kit for several years now. I hate having problems whenever I go somewhere and usually only go to stores where I know where the restrooms are.

I had it happen when I was sleeping and it didn't wake me up. ugh! I have not had one in public. You are right. It does make sense to carry an emergency kit.

Gas would be a blessing. Any one had a "wet fart" while out in public? I now carry an emergency change kit in the trunk of my car.

I used to have this problem. I thought maybe someone else might. My body changed on me is how I finally got "relief." If you call chronic constipation relief....

Fiber really did help me. but not the drinks. I had to eat the real food fiber. As long as I stuck to around 25 grams, things stayed relatively better for me. Also, I tried the enzymes to help me digest milk and that helped.
