I honestly don't think it makes a difference. I take mine every morning with or without breakfast. I want it to work all day.

Also, have you been tracking your water intake? Too little water can cause constipation.

Hello, new to this group, and had some questions. I recently went to a health food store due to severe constipation. She gave me quite a few different things to try to help. She gave me a probiotic, a herbal laxitive, magnesium, vitamin c, and enzyme's. I am taking all of those daily, most of the time. My probiotic was told to take two hours after my evening meal. Well, I have been working very late and not eating until late, and have missed three days of the probiotics. I was wondering, does it really matter what time of day I take it? Oh and BTW, taking all of those meds has not helped my constipation. I eat lots of fruits and vege's. I don't know what else to do. So...does it matter what time of day I take the probiotics?

I do not fear. I am changing.

I read an article where you can't just take any probiotic. Take one that has the largest dose of bifidus acidophilus you can find. Sam's Club has one I take that has 40,000 units, but I do have to take plenty of fiber! It sends my IBS-d the other direction!

I have IBS which has improved since taking strong Probiotic capsules daily. I also am VITAMIN D deficient, this was diagnosed by my doctor with blood tests, I have to avoid the sun, for other medical reasons and I this is despite taking fish oils daily for months.

I have been prescribed with a strong Vitamin D once a day spray under the tongue, where it is absorbed immediately into the blood stream and therefore is a much better way of supplementing the diet. The spray is called

BetterYou DLux 3000 - Daily 3000iu Vitamin D Oral Spray

You can buy it from Amazon and is recommended for Vitamin D deficiency

Has anyone tried Yakult? I am wondering how it would work with the IBS. I got a package of 5 bottles to try and just had day 3. I think you need to go 10 days to see if it does anything.

For me, they worked for about 3 months, then when they stopped, I switched to a stronger one, which worked for about another 3 months. Then when they stopped, I switched to a stronger one. When they stopped working, there was nothing stronger to try, so I stopped taking them. My recent great find has been Bromalain, which is an enzyme. It helps with digestion of protiens. It's really helped me out. I'm sure it will eventually stop helping and I'll have to find something else, but it's great for now.

Hello! Im new here and hope to be able to educate as well as be educated by others on the topic of IBS. When it comes to probiotics and IBS, yes they are a great help! Best place to get them is at a vitamin shop, the best ones will have several strains of probiotics and MUST be refrigerated for the best results. If you dont refridgerate them they will still work but not as effectively, trust me there is a difference. The other product that I have found to bring me great relief it Coconut Oil,1/2 - 1 tbs a day. The coconut oil needs to be pure extra virgin, unrefined and non-bleached. You can use the coconut oil in pretty much anything,I put mine in my morning coffee. A great one to try is Natures Way. Best place to by this is also at a vitamin shop. I hope this information is able to help someone! Message me if you have questions. emoticon

Hi there,
Having suffered for a few years with IBS C & D, I was finally told by a personal trainer/nutritionist to try Chlorella for the IBS. I bought it at the Nutrition House in the Green Foods section. This has been, by far, the most success I've had in trying to control the IBS. I felt better within days of starting on it and I now have very few or no occurrences. Chlorella multiplies the good bacteria hundreds of times faster than regular probiotics and it's the best I've felt in years....not to mention the bloating has gone and I'm finally back to losing weight after being stuck for so long.

Having taken the probiotics for nearly 3 weeks I took the risk of having a boiled egg for breakfast a couple of days ago. Good result as I didnt have to rush to the toilet 15 minutes after eating it although did have some movement later in the day. Not a nice subject but it was such a relief not to have to dash several times a day for several days so it is a massive improvement.

Glad I looked in this forum. My problems are with eggs and lactose. Like goat03 this was something that just happened out of the blue, but mine was possibly triggered by a bad case of food poisoning through chicken. My main interest in these posts is the probiotic question as I am lactose intolerant and cannot eat yoghurt so thanks to mbalayan I am just about to order a lactose-free probiotic supplement. I will keep looking on this STeam for good advice from all your experience.

Glad to have found this thread. My dietician suggested I use a probiotic since I have IBS and I had not heard much about them. It seems Culturelle is a good one so I may try that one! I have not had much problems lately but last night and today I have been miserable so I have to try something!

I have never heard anything about probiotics being in anything but yogurt, but there are a lot of prepared things that they claim to be adding things to and I'm sure probiotics would be one. I haven't had much luck with probiotics and if I eat too much yogurt have a terrible problem. One thing I have found will help is papaya enzyme, but it has to be consistent and still I will have problems when I am taking it.

I am new to the probiotic topic as well. Does anyone know enough about it to answer this?
Can you get the same prociotics that are in a pill form in foods that you eat? Like would blueberries provide whatever the pill is providing?

Hi Godsdove:
I just joined SP and this team. I'm hoping to learn how to cope with IBS and maybe eliminate some of problems I have like diarrhea.

Is Culturelle a brand name of probiotics?

Most of the time when I eat eggs in the morning I have pretty severe diarrhea. It didn't have any effect on me for the first 6 months of eating eggs for breakfast and now all of a sudden this problem has developed. I can no longer have an egg breakfast when we go out. Any ideas why?

Thanks for any advise

I seriously recommend you try the Culturelle. I don't know a lot about different types of probiotics though...I just know this stuff is working for me. Definitely worth a try! Good luck!

I have had IBS-A for many years and have been through many different treatments. For quite awhile just using Prozac helped but I think those days are about over. I have constipation for a day or two and then 3-4 days of diarrhea. Can someone give me some guidance on probiotics?? I tried Align a couple of years ago but saw no significant difference. Is there one that would be better? I'm reading that bifidobacterium infantis is what I need to take but that is the ingredient of Align. Any ideas or suggestions for me?? Thanks!

I swear by my probiotics. I started taking them about 3 months ago, and they are wonderful. My husband has also gotten the flu a few times since I've started using them, and I haven't gotten sick from him yet (and I normally do). So there are great added benefits besides helping with IBS!

Hello All, Very interresting topic. Just wondering if anyone suffering from IBS has been tested for Celiacs disease. If not, insist on it. Eliminating gluten controls this and the symptoms are similar and one leads to the other. Probiotics are great and all should use them. Have you tried prebiotics? These are taken 30 mins before you eat and may be even more helpful.

Last year I started on Activia yogurt and I found it really helped, so I started taking probiotics as well (primal defense brand then switched to primal defense ultra). While all my symptoms aren't gone, I definitely don't get as much bloating and stomach cramping as I usually do. I recently stopped eating the Activia because the probiotic pills have helped so much.

Been using activa yogurt for a few weeks, seems to be working for me. Just don't buy the light, get the regular, the light contains artifical sweetner and it made my D worst.

I must say... its helped me 150%!!!!! However, I still have a persistent pain in my left side. Its about 1" above my belly button and to the left about a quarter inch under my rib cage. Its tender to the touch almost 24-7. When it hurts the worst, I have bad gas. So, it makes me think the pain is in or around my descending colon. but x-rays and CT scan shows nothing. Anyone else have similar pain?

Hello, My fellow IBS sufferers, I wanted to inform you that you should incorporate a probiotic or acidopholus in your diet. I do supplements especially that I am lactose intolerance, and do dairy free supplements such as Natren. Great brand, they work for me. I recommend it to anyone who wants to supplement it in their diet. It also has no calories!! emoticon
