I've been going through a lot of stressful situations this year as well, and I agree. Staying focused on the Lord whether through a Christian radio station, reading the Bible, or fellowshipping with others, has really helped me maintain a balance in life.

i also listen to KLOVE on the radio. it's a christian radiostation. it gets me grounded again. I always remind myself i'm not the one in charge. My God is the one in charge so i need to get out of the drivers seat.

One day at a time.

You could also tried velerian or hops, I buy the tea but you can also get tablets, they both naturally reduce anxiety and help you sleep and they don't upset your tummy.

I just love the SP fittness program, it says 20 minutes of meditation every day. Well, I take them up on that! When the kids have "grow time" (nap time)I do the dishes and clean things up. The kids are on their cots snoozing and I kick back and meditate for 30 minutes. I got this DVD called Aquarium. There are scenes of aquariums with soothing music and water. It is really neat!

Well, we all have more control on ourselves than on environment..

Often it comes down to our ability to analyze a stressful situation and define our actions in a convincing manner

That's great! I had a pretty hectic day. Went back to school (without my voice...) and spent the day fighting with one of my ADD Ritalin children, so that didn't help matters any. I feel like I should dose myself up on lavendar tea or something. lol... Maybe that's actually not such a bad idea!

Today was stressful at work and I was on telephone call most of the day but did not have much to eat until like 3pm but had a lot of water to drink.

Did not have stress related IBS today.

Under stress condition, I try to ask myself to consider all options and take best action possible. This helps me to move on from the stress situation.

What I need is a smarter way to handle stress.

Exercise always helps but there may not be an opportunity to go to gym all the time. Some days, I hardly get 10 mins for lunch. BTW, there is nothing worse than facing a conflict situation at Friday afternoon.

I listen to my favorite music (from back in my high school days) on my computer at work and that seems to take the edge off for me. Fortunately it has a mellowing effect on my boss as well.

In heavy traffic I practice breathing exercises. I breathe slowly in through my nose for 7 seconds, hold for three, and exhale slowly for 7. I can do this for thirty minutes and I will remain calm for hours-I work three nights a week with the public, and I find that I am much calmer and friendlier if I have practiced breathing on the way to work.

At home making sure that my house is clean and laundry done has a calming effect on me. Chaos and clutter take away my serenity. My home is my refuge.

We don't drown by falling in the water. We drown by staying there.

It was much easier to handle stress when we were kids.

As adult mind accumulated experience it just takes more time to process a stressful situation.

Exercise in the morning really helps to run thru the day. This is the best stress reliever.

KCCORINE - I once took an anti-spasmodic medicine, not the same one, and it worked great for me. I moved, lost connection, thanks for the name. It sounds vaguely familiar to me.

I have a mixed version of IBS that's almost all stress related and I've been suffering for about 15 years off and on and was diagnosed about 4 years ago. In the last couple of years it's gotten really bad and I ended up in the ER again. The doctor gave me a medication called Buscopan which is an anti-spasmodic. I was quite upset that he wouldn't give me any pain medication and thought he must be a quack. Obviously he wasn't, this is the only medicine that has 100% relieved my pain by stopping my colon spasms.

It's so wonderful that I had a meeting with my Manager today, which is extremely stressful for me. I usually have a flare up that starts the night before and last 3-4 days. This time, nothing... no pain, no cramping, no hot sweats and no bloating. I finally don't have that pregnant look anymore.

Here's a link to the product, keep in mind I live in Europe so I'm only assuming that's available in the US as well. Also, my medical care is free on the universal healthcare system, so I don't the cost either.

GINGERRATZLAFF - That was a great post and I hope people will hear you. To buy all the aides for yoga can run a lot of money. There are a lot of aides you can do without, period. You also should do as you wrote, make your own.

Hello, I am new to this topic. I wanted to comment on yoga equipment. I went to a yoga center that had a lot of equipment and thought I needed it all. Then a friend from India who practiced yoga since she was a child told me hot to make my own. For a bolster, consider using firm pillows of sewing a cover and stuffing it until firm (even old scraps of fabric, old clothes, etc. just smooth out the wrinkles. For a strap, use a long belt or two. For blocks, stuff cereal boxes and tape together. Just look around and be creative.
My yoga instructor also recommends that we gentle and kind to our bodies. If a position is too difficult for me she has me move to a comfortable position by propping me with a bolster, etc. This method is called Iyengar Yoga.

I tried Yoga in my high school years. The benefit was increase in concentration/focusing ability and better control over mind. Tried to continue a bit during my college days as well.

In general my breathing pattern is okay but there is a lot of room for improvement. Will try to work on it. People who get into endurance sport typically have above average quality of breathing..

I am trying get the deep breathing right. There is a theory that with proper Yoga breathing one can raise BMR due to additional oxygen utilization rate. This can also help one control the HR during exercise as a result be able to exercise safely at higher levels. Which means we can do more with our exercise time on machines.

Just trying to connect the dots in my mind.

LIKE2BEFIT: The flexibility will come with in time. Just do as much as you can. Each week you will be alittle better. Yes, I exercise at home, it saves time and gas. Yoga, Pilaties, and Tai Chi are home friendly. If at all possible when you have learned the routine try doing any of them outside in the fresh air.

This is on my to-do list starting next week. It will probably take some hard work to get into flexibility but will gradually feel better from inside.

Last week I tried morning Gym sessions but with Yoga, probably can do this at the privacy of home while saving time during to/from Gym in the morning. Will save Gym sessions for afternoons.

LIKE2BFIT - You are so right! Practice Yoga on a empty, or semi-empty stomach. Early in the morning is best, in the sun outside is good, a quiet mind helps. Loose fitting clothes and bare feet or light slippers (like ballet slippers).

LIKE2BFIT - YOGA doesn't have to be time consuming, you can do it anytime during the day. Do not do yoga on a full stomach. You can make deep breathing and stretching a part of your day, no matter where you are. Frist practice the deep breathing then move onto the positions.

I used to do Yoga many years back. Need to resume for health/wellness. It is time consuming though.

Stress is probably the main cause of my IBS.

DEEDEE, you csn do yoga in your own home. Don't get discouraged at what you can do. I have seen people increase their flexibilty greatly. Like anything it takes time.
Get yourself a beginners yoga tape. This tape will tell you to buy a lot of supplies. Don't but anything until you see how you like Yoga. I do yoga on my front room rug in front of the TV.
There is a lot of deep breathing involved, which would be good for you.

Deep Breathing does help--breath in deeply in thru the nose--slowly blow out thru pursed lips.
Pull stomach in when breathing in
Push stomach out when exhaling

Yoga-that is how we breathe.

July 2nd is "work up a sweat"; well, with my arthritis flare up today, I couldn't do that intense of a workout, but I did get out for a good long walk anyway.

July 3rd, "just breathe"; I need to remember to do that when I get stressed out at work. The store where I work is super busy the first week of the month, especially when it's a holiday weekend.

Boy, don't tell me about stress. That is something I have a hard time handling.
I had to go to a funeral yesterday, and while my sister and I were talking to the family, my sister in law asked my husband how I was doing, and he said Dee does not handle stress well. He told her I had a time yesterday before we left as I knew we were going to a funeral
I am trying to calm down onthings, but it is so hard for me. Don't know why
guess that is just how I am
I know those 9 sk last year when my brother in law was in intensive cae and my sister and I went there everyday to see him did a big thing on me
Hope you all can handle this better than me
I havee a time with it

I agree 100%. My mom had to be admitted recently to hospital for heart trouble. They weren't sure what was happening and were guessing different things-nothing good. I was standing outside her room while they got her settled when all of a sudden I turned pale white and nearly collapsed with IBS pain. I could not walk well at all. I was doubled over with an attack. I was terribly constipated so all this was pain without diarrhea. I ended up in the ER. I was told stress from my Mom's health problems brought on an attack. I try to avoid stress or lay down for a bit to relax. I have had the pain recently since Saturday and thru today (MONDAY). Some of it is stress related and some is from eating too much chocolate or fatty foods. I'm improving but the nausea is sticking with me. The pain is a searing, stabbing pain that see as lightning thru my stomach and at the beginning of my esophagus. I am taking miralax 3 times daily to get a break from constipation. How about you guys? How's it going? PEACE!

I believe there is always a chance to learn.

One of the factors in dealing with IBS is stress. I thought some of you might be interested in the following message.
SparkPeople's calendar feature will help you focus on one healthy habit each month. For July, that means decreasing and managing the stress in your life.
