I let SP set them based on my current weight and goal weight with target date. That's how I reached my goal weight because then as I logged my weight weekly my calories/P/F/C were all adjusted down automatically along my journey.
If setting your own calories works for you then go for it! One note - then the P/F/C doesn't auto adjust and you'll need to manually adjust those as well.

I would have to check. I think I set my own because Spark People has it set too low. I tried the tracker for a while, but stopped because I prefer to use my paper WW tracker and count points not calories.

Mine is at 1,200 - 1,80o a day but my dear friend who is BIG INTO the calorie counting / exercise tells me that is way to low for me. I set my own goals.... that need to be evaluated. I just have not turned the 'let sparks do the math' on yet!
HOWEVER - I almost ALWAYS meet the 1,200 - 1,300 range. ONLY that maybe why I am not losin any weight with all the activity I do.
I am not sure if that helps you .... but I would trust Sparks!
IT all begins with YOU..... Plant the seeds and get growing healthy!
I HAVE ALWAYS WONDERED WHAT EVERYONE HAS SET ON THEIR NUTRITION TRACKER AND IF YOU STAY WITHIN THE CALORIES LISTED THERE.
Sparks has mine set at 1250-1500. I changed it to read 1200-1250 because if given the higher number I will tend to eat until I reach the number not because I am hungry it is just because I can!! Does that make any sense? So I changed mine to be at the lower end of the range and I feel a lot better at the end of the day knowing if I stay in this range I am staying within the guidelines and not go over.
WHERE IS YOUR NUTRITION TRACKER SET?

With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful. ~Mark Victor Hansen
