I signed out book 2 from the library, but I have a few books on my list before it.

When my husband and I bought our first house, my cousin lived with us for a few months. She was my best friend for years, and her moving in was disastrous. She moved out very unexpectedly when I learned of something unforgivable she did, and we haven't spoken since. I can't think that I could ever do well living in a house with other women. In my experience women are catty and things always turn to drama. There seems to be none of that in this book and that felt false to me.

Finally finished today. I enjoyed the story and the characters. I was not a huge fan of the writing, although I thought it improved toward the end. I thought the author tried too hard in the beginning - used too many cliches, similes and analogies.
Re: favorite character, Phoebe and Juan were sweet - giving the right meaning to love and relationship. I liked Ness; she was self-reflecting and honest with herself and others.
The book is definitely poised for a sequel. Who will occupy that special guestroom? And who will fill Beryl's empty room? How will Ness and David's relationship evolve? Will Nance and James come to terms (and the altar)? Will the roommates remain in the house after Phoebe and Juan marry? Stay tuned!

Michellelynne, I have had roommates in my past and had good relationships/friendships. I do know people who have had real problems with dysfunctional roommates, but I was lucky and was with other young people who were starting out in their careers after university. BUT I was much younger then and more adaptable!

Neelixnkes I ALSO would go right away and get tested! Why not take the best care of your own health -- not to mention be sure of your health in case you meet someone that you may want to have a serious relationship with.

I'm just about to start chapter 10 about Thanksgiving. I like the characters so far but I have to say that Ness living like she is sick without knowing is sort of annoying. I think a more common reaction is to believe that it won't happen to you instead of automatically believing you have HIV. I know catastrophic thinking is not uncommon but I hate being in limbo and not knowing what is wrong so I would have gone right to a clinic after hearing about Jake.

So I guess this is the end of our discussion for ~Bad Girl Creek~??

I enjoyed the book because it was wonderful to see how all the characters in the book had individual successes in their personal lives & came together successfully in business, living together, love & living life. Great read & I was left wanting to read the next 2! I have ordered the next 2 books, look forward to enjoying them.

No, the only time I had a roommate other than my husband or family was in college and it was a not so great experience because she was mentally ill.

I'm in the second part now where they are working on getting the poinsettias ready for the holidays. Right now "Stinky" is aptly named.

Has anyone picked up the second book yet?

MICHELLELYNN777- Maybe it seems like they are working on making the farm successful & that is their common goal that brings them together.
I think each woman also comes to this partnership with excess baggage & by each's own desire to conquer the past by succeeding together for each other.
Enjoy reading!

I haven't made time to read lately, so I'm still only about 1/2 way through the book. I really like it, just haven't been reading. I really liked Phoebe and Juan's first date and how her roommates helped get her ready for it. Has anyone ever lived with a group of roommates? The most I ever had was 2. My daughter lives in a house with 4 other girls, but they are all so busy with school, work, life that they really don't do much together. Maybe because they are all working toward a common goal to make the farm successful, they are more connected to each other.

I started it yesterday even though I haven't finished my current book. I'm about to start chapter 2. The author definitely draws you into the story right away. I seem to recall Solo mans Oak was the same way.

I like Phoebe best, she seemed very alive and real, and adept at coping with people who tried to limit her (like her brother). Book clubbers seem to react very differently to this one!

What I liked about the book was that it was entertaining easy read, the characters were interesting and engaged in real life struggles, and I liked the descriptions of the work that went into trying to save the farm. It did not bother me that this was a series of books -- the plot stands alone; it's not like Game of Thrones where there is a huge convoluted plot and a large cast of characters. I did not think it was great literature -- the romance was a little formulaic and didn't seem very real. But all in all I enjoyed this book.

I've been savoring this read like a fine glass of wine emoticon
I'm towards the end & will finish it tonight or ? Then I'm going to read it again before I pass it on to my sister.
This book has been a welcome change to me. I love how the women & the men come together in this read & it's a win/win for everyone so far...
My favorite character is Bear & her parrot. I identify with how she has persevered. Will share more later when everyone has finished.
I have the other 2 books on my to read list.
June is flying by! Almost time to pick a new read. I really enjoyed voting early & having time for all to get the book & participate in the discussion. Look forward to discussing more.
I also like James, & his gentlemanly ways with Phoebe,Ness,Beryl & Nance

I too read the Secret Life of Bees and was not impressed with it. I finished Bad Girl Creek and was a little disappointed in it. Knowing it was a Trilogy from the beginning left a bad taste in my mouth, I have too many books to read now and don't want to have to read two more. I just finished another book similar to this one about Flowers and how they talk to you. Cannot remember the title to save myself. All in all it was a good read, will not get the others.

Goddess, There are several very good books that deal with women in groups. Earlier I indicated two older ones, Marilyn French's The Women's Room and Mary McCarthy's The Group. Two newer ones are Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees which I did not particularly like but many people do and Toni Morrison's Paradise. I loved Paradise but it is a hard book to read, as are most if not all of Morrison's books. I highly recommend it for an examination of society's, read that men's, reaction to women attempting to live outside the boundaries. Don't be misled by the beginning story as that is an important part of the parallel.

I finished reading this book this morning. I was determined to finish it last night, but I had to put it down and go to bed. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I was somewhat disappointed. At the beginning of the book, I got a sense that it was about friendships between the women. As it progressed, it developed into a somewhat formulaic romance novel with 4 heroines. While I connected well with the characters, I felt like there was something lacking, like the author was staying on a shallow level with them. The big issues she wanted to touch on, she did just that, touched on them. I would have liked more exploration of some of those issues. The mostly happy ending felt unrealistic and left me with the bad taste of saccharine in my mouth. It all wrapped up so neatly like a 30 minute TV series.

One of my favourite parts of the book is how the gardening journal carries through the entire story. The way the author slipped in the character of Sadie was definitely enjoyable, she developed the best of all the characters even though she wasn't alive any longer. Her "cruel" joke of switcharoo with the inheritance to her niece and nephew was a perfect way to start the book. Maybe Jo-Ann could write a prequel with the back story of Sadie's life!

I will definitely be reading book 2 of this series when I can get my hands on it.

I am reading three books at the same time. They are all good, and sometimes get confused on which book I am reading. I also have another book by my bedside and one I keep in my car for when I got to Starbucks. I am just a reading fool. LOL.

Thank you DR1939~now I have a couple more books to put on my TBR list!!

After the first 3 chapters, I am definitely enjoying this book! Just wish I had time to sit and read, but I've been working since I got home from a road trip on Monday. When I try to read before bed, I'm so tired I fall asleep no matter how good the book is~haha! I can't wait to see how the 4 women + pets come together to work the flower farm :)

For those of you farther along in the story, who is your favorite character and why?

Although an entertaining read, Marilyn French did it better in The Women's Room and Mary McCarthy in The Group.

I've read the first chapter and already hooked! Probably won't have much time for reading this weekend, but I can't wait to really get into it! I love Phoebe's sense of humor so far and her willingness to give Ness a chance based on her instincts about her. Can't wait for the story to unfold as more women join the farm :)

It's not a big deal. I just don't like reading on book. I think I'm going to read The Host by Stephanie Meyer. There's a movie based on it.

No, I did not know this book is 1 in a series.
After going to the Author's website:
www.joannmapson.com/books.html
I see that "Bad Girl Creek" is book #1 of a trilogy.

Do you guys usually read books that are from a series? I am just wondering if you will read all three books or just the first one of this series.

Bevieg~There is a brief synopsis for the book on the suggestions thread. You can find it by clicking the "see more topics" button on the monthly reads forum and looking for the June Suggestions thread. Also, I often go to amazon or goodreads to find out information/ratings for books. Hope that helps!

I don't know too much about this book, is there a synopsis? I will probably also read Young Wives too.
