I have this new hobby - geocaching - I spent more than five hours yesterday outside - walking both the paved trails and the natural trails among the woods and spawning areas of the salmon. I noticed that my face felt very wind burnt last night as I was watching the Biggest Losers on the TV.

We will walk up the the woods today for a sledding/ski party with Quintessa's class. It is their winter party and they were kind enough to have it before we leave. Very nice!

We're going out this afternoon. I'm looking forward to it. Need to take advantage of all the dry days possible in this rainforest!

This morning before the sun was awake I was out the door into the deep dark woods.
I will post to my blog later - but for now - I seen two beautiful tundra Swans gliding along the stream.

Forraging is fun. When we lived in Minnesota I had several books and was able to identify a fair amount of edible things in the woods but for mushrooms I have learned from experienced mushroom hunters which I would advise for you if you are interested in it. People who know how generally seem willing to teach. One other thing we do if we find one that we are a bit unsure of is to bring it to someone who knows before eating them. Here we generally stick to chanterelles in the fall (there are two kinds here) as well as the occasional King Bolete. We also have found these rare mushrooms called "Black trumpets"...it took us a while to positively identify them...we had to find a forrager who knew. They are black and seem scary looking since they are black but they are perfectly edible and delicious. The Norwegians around here know of lots more edible types but we have not learned them yet. On Sundays in the fall there is actually a "Mushroom Patrol" that sets up a station at the edge of the woods near the train stop so you can ask them to help identify the mushrooms you have found! It sounds as if you live in a very beautiful place that probably has lots of edible mushrooms and other things in the woods...leeks, garlic, edible flowers no doubt...I bet if you got going on it you would be hooked!

I agree with you - you should worry - once you get a car you will have to take extra precautions not to gain. It sounds wonderful where you live - almost like as good as Squamish BC :)
Last fall I met a couple of men out with buckets collecting edible mushrooms and plants - this is one thing I have never done - I hike past things and once in a while I wonder if that is edible - maybe I should get a book.

We hike when we can. Much more so before we started this move...usually we would go for several hours in the woods just a few km north of here. We also forrage for mushrooms and berries in the fall. I am told there are morels too in the spring but I have never seen one over here. Maybe up in lesund. (Where we are moving.)

On a day to day basis I walk alot since I have no car. I walk everywhere unless I am taking the commuter train. During this time I have lost a pound and I firmly believe it is because I walk so much because I have not been tracking my food and have not been the best at being as careful about what I eat. I am actually a little worried about the fact that we have to get cars when we move...I suspect it will be harder to maintain or lose weight when I have to carve out time for exercise rather than just get it naturally.

Lately, since my car is not around for me to use, I've just been walking around in the "neighborhood". That usually means that I can go out for about a half an hour by meandering around and checking on the neighbors' cabins and properties and making sure everything is secure. I usually walk down to the beach, then up through someone's lot, then back down to the beach and so on.

I could venture further, in fact, there's a big hill behind us that I hike on occasionally, but the leash is in the car right now too so I have to stay close.

When I have the car, I go to Rockport State Park and usually do the Evergreen Trail which is about 4 miles or something depending on which routes we take. There are also other trails and parks around and we'll go out for a couple of hours. In fall, we pick mushrooms!

This might be a shared topic of other Teams - but so be it.
I have been doing lots of walking - can almost call it hiking and at times it is just a pleasant stroll around the ocean or pond - but whatever you call it - I am seeing my weight drop even though my eating habits are still not the best.
So I challenge you - please join in and share where you walk.
How long in time.
How far in miles or kilometers
How many steps
What did you see while you were out and about?
