I seem to do quite well with buying veg and fruit, a lot of it I buy from the cheapie corner and one cauliflower will do me for at least 3 meals, here in Britain we have Lidl and Aldi which are good for cheap food, I am a vegetarian but do eat fish sometimes mostly though laziness.
Soup also makes a cheap meal and I usually make a big pan full and freeze some.

I am so frustrated. I don't know how people afford to diet. Vegetables and fruit are outrageously expensive and all the fat free stuff and low fat stuff appears to be higher priced than the regular. Aren't poor people allowed to have healthy food too? What am I suppose to do? How do you do it? I can afford a pound of hamburger and a box of hamburger helper and eat 2 or 3 meals and it is less expensive than a bag of apples. The price of chicken is out of this world. I am just so frustrated. I have read some books and articles talking about how unhealthy processed foods are which makes sense but if that is all we can afford then what are we suppose to do?

My "budgeting" goal for the month is to cook healthy meals at home, and stop eating out!

I have created a monthly meal calendar where I have listed what I plan to cook for dinner each night!!

Wish me LUCK!!

My goal for the month to help keep my budget in tact is to take out weekly amount of cash for groceries and other purchases, and RETIRE the ATM card! Spend way to much $$ each month when we SWIPE the card! Cash makes it easier to see how much $ you have to spend! When money gets low, makes it easier to distinguish between wants and needs!

Visiting the grocery store in the early morning hours is a great way to save! Always find GREAT deals on meats and vegetables because they are marked down for "quick sale" before the expiration date runs out.

GREAT wat to purchase cuts of meat that you normally couldn't afford!

Today I sorted/checked all the fruit in the fridge, and any that was not "fit" to serve to a guest, I put into baggies and froze. I will use the frozen fruit to make fruit smoothies!

Making smothies is a great way to save $$ because you are using something that you normally would have thrown away, and turning it into a meal or snack!

They all sound great. I always seem to cook the same cheap meals. These will be a great change and my kids will love it. I'm going to start the calendar as well. i think it will cut down on spending at the local store, stop us from having take aways due to not planning and lower the spending... I would love the Italian herby chicken recipe and the macaroni and meatballs please. If you don't mind, I think I'll work through your list. I love trying new things. Thankyou for your help. much appreciated. Sharon x

I actually have lots of recipes that are good for a larger family that are filling and not expensive to make. (i've got a family of 6) they're crowd pleasers as well. even my pickiest eater eats most of the meals. lol.

Italian Herbed chicken over pasta (done in a slow cooker)
Macaroni & Meatballs (mac n chz -scratch made- with cooked ground beef or turkey)
Of course sandwiches and Cereal are always staples
Grilled Cheese & Tomato Soup
Turkey Lasagna roll-ups
meatloaf
egg salad tacos
stromboli (super cheap specially when you make your own dough)
**side note** i make my own bread as well using the bread machine and my oven
salsbury steak over linguini
Beef Stroganoff (scratch)
Hawaiian Haystacks

the list goes on.. i actually use a desk calendar to plan my meals out for the month to save time and money. i then hang it on the wall for everyone to see so that they know what to expect.
If you want recipes for any of these let me know. i can post them or send them via spark mail.

And its up to me to start the budget breakdown. I'm collecting all receipts, shopping on the cheap but I need some spending and cooking advice. budget recipes guys? We are a family of 5. Strong and strapping kids that are never full (bottomless pit for a stomach. My new motto is "Do I need it, can I afford it and is it cheaper anywhere else. Then will I use it, is it worth it and can I alter its expense". So here go's guys, tighter belts and plenty pennies in the purse.........x

Didn't win the lotto! So instead of saying I splurged on lotto tickets, I can now say that I wasted my $10 on lotto tickets! emoticon

my budget is pretty non-existant. meaning no monies..but that's what this group is for right? lol!

I do my best to plan out a couple weeks of meals and what we may want to make/have and several times a week it's sandwiches or leftovers. feeding a family of 6 on $330 a month is brutal!

Yesterday, I stayed home all day, so I didn't have to resist the temptation to spend $$$$$.

Today however, I will get the Sunday paper, clip coupons, and review the sales adds for all the major grocery stores in our area.

I will then create our weekly meal planner based on what is on sale, and any good coupon deals.

What did you do today to keep from blowing your budget?

Did you make coffee at home instead of going to STARBUCKS?

Did you pack your lunch instead of eating out?

Did you resist the urge to SPLURGE?

OR....Maybe you got off track? If so, what will you do to prevent future mishaps?
