How is everyone doing on their healthy habits challenge? I am back from my trip so I am really taking time to refocus my attention on my healthy habits.

How many glasses of water did you drink today? 9

How many fruits and vegetables did you eat today? 6

How many steps did you take today? 5680

What did you avoid eating today that made you feel proud? Students in my class brought in refreshments for my evening class. . . including homemade cookies. I did not eat a single one! They looked good but I had done well all day so I thought why ruin the day now.

What did you wish you had not eaten because it really was not as good as you remembered? Nothing. I was really good today . . . yahoo!!

How much sleep last night? 8 hours . . . I awoke fresh and ready to start the day!

emoticon

I feel really great about my successful day.

The last few days have been a chaotic chain of events as I leave in a few hours for a conference in New Mexico. So I thought I should drop by and see how everyone is doing.

I love the discussion on the boards . . . Good Job. This is the aspect of SP that so many online weight loss or healthy living programs lack. So keep it up!

4/15 Tax day progress . . .

How many glasses of water did you drink today? 9

How many fruits and vegetables did you eat today? 3 disappointed that I failed to achieve my goal.

How many steps did you take today? I forgot my pedometer in the chaos . . . but about average or above because I was like running around all day.

What did you avoid eating today that made you feel proud?

Who had time to do anything but eat what I had planned?

What did you wish you had not eaten because it really was not as good as you remembered?

Nothing. I barely made my low end of my caloric range. So it was a challenge.

How much sleep last night? I am functioning now on about 5 hours of sleep. When I did get to bed, I could not sleep. Oh well, maybe I will sleep on my flight.

Have a good week everyone. I hope to be able to get on SP from the hotel.

How many fruits and vegetables did you eat today? again its still early but I am having carrots for dinner so there's one and at least 3 servings of fruit for snacks. so I am going to say 4.

How many steps did you take today? not sure about this one how do you know? I am going to play tennis tonight about 530-6

What did you avoid eating today that made you feel proud? nothing yet

What did you wish you had not eaten because it really was not as good as you remembered? again nothing.

I also have a few personal goals to add for this week I know most of them have nothing to do with being "healthy" but maybe if i write the, (type them) I will be more likely to get them done!!

1. do at least one load of laundry a day (I did this last week and did really good)
2. make a menu for the week (did this see my blog)
3. make the bed and don't leave my towels on the bedroom floor! (why do I have such a hard time with this, I am a grown up! LOL)
4. do some form of exercise every day! (looks like it might rain on wednesday so I hope I can find something)

April 12 Healthy Habits

How many glasses of water did you drink today? This one is easy for me. I get at least 8 glasses a day if not more.

How many fruits and vegetables did you eat today? I have been working on this over the last three week. Most days I get at least 5 but over the last week I have been getting more than the five.

How many steps did you take today? This one has been a tough one. I have struggled to get 5000 steps. I too have been setting a timer to go off every hour to remind me to move.

What did you avoid eating today that made you feel proud? At work someone will go out to pick up food for a group of people. This week they were going to Apollo Burger. I thought about getting a kids meal they decided to stick with the lunch I brought from home.

What did you wish you had not eaten because it really was not as good as you remembered? Today we went to Maria Calendars as a family and had a piece of triple chocolate cheese cake. While I shared it multiple people and only ate a small portion and it was good I wish I would have made a different choice.

April 12 - My report on healthy habits progress:

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

How many glasses of water did you drink today?

I have been able to drink at least 8 and sometimes as high as 10 glasses of water a day. I am now using a timer to remind me to drink at least 1 glass of water an hour. I feel really good about making this goal each day for the past week . . . now if I can accomplish this over the weekend I will be really happy. I tend to forget when I am out shopping or attending meetings. I find I still will grab a diet coke when I go to a store or a meeting.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

How many fruits and vegetables did you eat today?

This is where I have made the most progress. Before starting SP I may have eaten 5 fruits and vegetables a week. Fruits hardly ever passed my lips. But I do succeed most days at eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables. Thankfully, every Sunday my sister prepares zip lock bags for each day of the week. Inside is snack bags with grapes, carrots, celery, strawberries, pineapple, or similar items + a snack cheese for protein. Wow! What a lifesaver. I have been driving home from work on at least two occasions this past week when I thought I was really hungry. I felt those yellow arches reaching out to drag my car into the drive-through for a greasy fix of salty fries. But there was my little bag of grapes, carrots, or celery that had not yet been consumed in my lunch bag. In desperation my fingers find the lonely bag in the bottom and out comes my life preserver. I munch right on past the golden arches I find myself smiling as I drive onto the Interstate at 500 South. Yahoo I have slipped by the yellow dragon one more time without being dragged in by the lure of greasy fries.

What did you avoid eating this week that made you feel proud?

I avoided the bagels and donuts in the main office. I avoided McDonalds (see short story above)
I avoided the candy the graduate students brought to my team meeting on Thursday.
I avoided the pizza that the students in my Monday night class brought in for their presentation.
Yahoo! I feel good about avoiding these temptations for another week.

How many steps did you take today?

Now this is my nemesis! I am trying to reach 7,500 steps by the end of the month. I have had 2 days this past week that got to the 5000 step mark but most are around 2700 steps. Too many meetings with students. They seem to stack up outside my office. Then when I get home I am exhausted. I must get on that treadmill either before work or after work. I thought I could set the timer and then get up and go for a 5 minute walk each hour. It did not work this week. So my goal this next week will be to try again at the timer. I will ask the student to go with me and we can talk as we walk. I will also plan to walk 30 minutes before leaving for work each day.

What did you wish you had not eaten because it really was not as good as you remembered?

Ummmmm. I really did not eat anything that was bad this last week . . . unless you consider eating 3 80 calorie muffins in one day. This past week I purchased some healthy blueberry muffins. They have 2 grams of fiber, low fat and low sugar, and just 80 calories. Typically I have one with my morning snack of fruit and yogurt. But I was home on Friday working on an important speech I must give next week and I found that everytime I went to get more water or fruits and vegetables that I also picked up a muffin. I logged them all and I did not exceed my calorie range for the day, but for some reason I wanted them. They are not that tasty as a chocolate muffin, but I ate them any way.

Next week will be a bit challenging as I have to travel to New Mexico for a conference at which I am giving the keynote speech. Yikes. I need to plan how I am going to at least drink my water, eat my fruits and vegetables, and get my steps in each day.

Plan ahead will be the key! emoticon

So what are your healthy habits that you are working on this week?

So often we focus on losing weight rather than focusing on making strides everyday to develop life long healthy habits. I read somewhere that it takes at least 21 days at doing something before it became a habit. I think I need more than that to make something a habit.

Just take the case of fitness gyms in January. They are filled with people that have made the resolution to become healthy, lose weight, or tone up. Less than 2 months later, the gyms are back to the normal flow of people. No waiting for the treadmill or stair master. What a deal for the fitness centers . . . all those people paid up for a year and gone in less than 2 months.

So this ongoing challenge will be designed to help you modify a few key healthy habits. You select the demons or dragons you wish to slay. Then come back here and report your success or ask for help to overcome the challenges.

Maybe you want to drink more water . . . or 8 glasses of water a day! You set your goal and then report on your progress each day or each week.

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Here are a few that I have been working on these past 3 weeks . . . some I feel I have made progress on and some I have not. But I will hold myself accountable here on this team discussion.

How many glasses of water did you drink today?

How many fruits and vegetables did you eat today?

How many steps did you take today?

What did you avoid eating today that made you feel proud?

What did you wish you had not eaten because it really was not as good as you remembered?

It is like a open journal that fellow members can comment on or give added support.

No more emotionally resisting change despite your best intentions for the Salt Lake Sparkers. No more failed New Years' resolutions! We are on the quest for a healthy lifestyle.

emoticon I am going to drink a glass of water before setting my goals for the next two weeks.
