April 12 - My report on healthy habits progress:
How many glasses of water did you drink today?
I have been able to drink at least 8 and sometimes as high as 10 glasses of water a day. I am now using a timer to remind me to drink at least 1 glass of water an hour. I feel really good about making this goal each day for the past week . . . now if I can accomplish this over the weekend I will be really happy. I tend to forget when I am out shopping or attending meetings. I find I still will grab a diet coke when I go to a store or a meeting.
How many fruits and vegetables did you eat today?
This is where I have made the most progress. Before starting SP I may have eaten 5 fruits and vegetables a week. Fruits hardly ever passed my lips. But I do succeed most days at eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables. Thankfully, every Sunday my sister prepares zip lock bags for each day of the week. Inside is snack bags with grapes, carrots, celery, strawberries, pineapple, or similar items + a snack cheese for protein. Wow! What a lifesaver. I have been driving home from work on at least two occasions this past week when I thought I was really hungry. I felt those yellow arches reaching out to drag my car into the drive-through for a greasy fix of salty fries. But there was my little bag of grapes, carrots, or celery that had not yet been consumed in my lunch bag. In desperation my fingers find the lonely bag in the bottom and out comes my life preserver. I munch right on past the golden arches I find myself smiling as I drive onto the Interstate at 500 South. Yahoo I have slipped by the yellow dragon one more time without being dragged in by the lure of greasy fries.
What did you avoid eating this week that made you feel proud?
I avoided the bagels and donuts in the main office. I avoided McDonalds (see short story above)
I avoided the candy the graduate students brought to my team meeting on Thursday.
I avoided the pizza that the students in my Monday night class brought in for their presentation.
Yahoo! I feel good about avoiding these temptations for another week.
How many steps did you take today?
Now this is my nemesis! I am trying to reach 7,500 steps by the end of the month. I have had 2 days this past week that got to the 5000 step mark but most are around 2700 steps. Too many meetings with students. They seem to stack up outside my office. Then when I get home I am exhausted. I must get on that treadmill either before work or after work. I thought I could set the timer and then get up and go for a 5 minute walk each hour. It did not work this week. So my goal this next week will be to try again at the timer. I will ask the student to go with me and we can talk as we walk. I will also plan to walk 30 minutes before leaving for work each day.
What did you wish you had not eaten because it really was not as good as you remembered?
Ummmmm. I really did not eat anything that was bad this last week . . . unless you consider eating 3 80 calorie muffins in one day. This past week I purchased some healthy blueberry muffins. They have 2 grams of fiber, low fat and low sugar, and just 80 calories. Typically I have one with my morning snack of fruit and yogurt. But I was home on Friday working on an important speech I must give next week and I found that everytime I went to get more water or fruits and vegetables that I also picked up a muffin. I logged them all and I did not exceed my calorie range for the day, but for some reason I wanted them. They are not that tasty as a chocolate muffin, but I ate them any way.
Next week will be a bit challenging as I have to travel to New Mexico for a conference at which I am giving the keynote speech. Yikes. I need to plan how I am going to at least drink my water, eat my fruits and vegetables, and get my steps in each day.
Plan ahead will be the key!
So what are your healthy habits that you are working on this week?
