I think consistency is the most important thing for a new meditator. Practicing whatever technique you use EVERY day is the key. For almost 40 years I've said I believe in the power of meditation, but NEVER managed to do it because I thought my mind had to be free of thoughts...NO. Finally, I have managed to meditate every day since August 1st. AND, I have learned to stop expecting things to happen while I'm meditating.

Here's an article by Cyndi Lee called "Make Friends With Your Body" from the September 2010 issue of Shambala Sun. It talks about overcoming resistance, the mind/body connection and starting a meditation practice.

Thank you so much Chris! I just went to website and signed up, then sent a link to all my kids. I don't know if I've ever been to Deepak Chopra's website before even tho I have a few of his books. I'm reading the one about Jesus now.

Again, thank you.

If anyone is interested the Chopra Centre is offering a free 21 Day Meditation Challenge. It will run for 21 days, begins soon and each day anyone taking part will receive an emailed guided meditation link. There is also a free mind balance questionnaire that can be taken both before and at the conclusion of the challenge for comparison if interested.

The Chopra Centre do some great work, there are many free meditations on offer on their site, plus a lot of other self-help information.
The link to enroll (I already have) is below -

(Sorry, that 'e' below the link is meant to be part of the link but for some reason it won't stay on the same line. You won't b e able to get to the site without including it.)

I thought this may be helpful for anyone who is just starting out in meditation, or for those of us who are sometimes inclined to miss a day here and there, usually when we most need it (which I am sometimes guilty of doing).

Chris.

I've believed in the power of meditation since I was in my 20's, but every time I sat and tried it my mind took off. Finally, in my 50's, I read an article that related it to fitness training. When our mind wanders, we bring it back, like doing an arm exercise. The arm goes out, and then we bring it back. Each time we do it our arm gets stronger. Each time we sit and meditate, and bring our thoughts back when they stray, our meditation will get stronger. I can't expect to sit and meditate for a few days and be like the Dalai Lama, just like I'd have to train for a marathon. I'd been expecting way too much out of meditation in the beginning. My hardest part is being consistent, because it really should be practiced daily.

"What do we understand by meditation? From the Buddhist point of view, meditation is a spiritual discipline, and one that allows you to have some degree of control over your thoughts and emotions.

Why is it that we don’t succeed in enjoying the lasting happiness that we are seeking? Buddhism explains that our normal state of mind is such that our thoughts and emotions are wild and unruly, and since we lack the mental discipline needed to tame them, we are powerless to control them. As a result, they control us. And thoughts and emotions, in their turn, tend to be controlled by our negative impulses rather than our positive ones. We need to reverse this cycle."

~The Dalai Lama
