Way to go Syndy! I have done really well too. I modified my plan a little. I allow them now in two situations....when I'm driving long distances (and just can't handle another cup of coffee) or when I'm in a situation out of my control and there are no other options and they are free (like at a party or meeting when the only beverage supplied is a cooler of sodas). It happened once and it seemed more sane to take a diet coke than to refuse (they didn't have water). So in the last two months....I've had a handful of them (taken 3 trips). I'm happy with that plan and have completely cut them out from my daily life. I missed them the first two weeks. I don't miss them anymore and I consume lots of healthy green tea. Way to go Syndy! Have you noticed fewer sugar cravings? I think I have but can't be sure. Haven't lost weight because of it.

I backslid while traveling this weekend. I was challenged by lack of options other than soda at an event and I chose a soda while driving for alertness. Back on none today. I also ate a lot this weekend but I exercised too. Balance, balance. Good for you Syndy.....keep it up.

Mary, That is GREAT!!! emoticon

The idea of one thing at a time, What a novel concept! Particularly for an alcoholic like me. I usually try to change everything about myself, and the entire world too all at once. Patience really is a virtue.

I ran out of diet coke in the house a few days ago, and just haven't bought anymore. I find, when it isn't staring me in the face, I don't miss it.

Good work! Dawn

I'm trying to quit diet Coke and anything else that has Aspartame in it. Aspartame is poison and the FDA should never have given in to the manufacturers and approved it. It's been linked to neurological and psychiatric disorders.

One week today! I miss them. So far, no impact on the ice cream and other evening junk. I'm doing one thing at a time. One more week without diet coke then I'll tackle the sweets, allowing 2 weekend treats or so.

Wish me luck :).

It is theoretical but even Dr. Oz and other mainstreamers like him believe it is true...current research shows diet sodas are linked to obesity as much (if not more) than regular sodas. I'm paraphrasing large legitimate university based research studies but the diet soda (or significant regular use of other substitute sweeteners) tells our brain we are eating sweets (yet our body doesn't actually get or process the sugar) so we end up craving more carbohydrate to meet the brain's expectation. Somehow it seems to be more true with diet sodas than with other sugar substitute use - maybe that is because people tend to consume diet sodas more mindlessly throughout the day rather than only at mealtime? I don't know but I'm doing an experiment on myself :). 2 days no diet coke but plenty of sugar cravings - and skinny cows. So, so far....the theory doesn't ring true with my brain body. We'll see. I'm not giving up splenda in my coffee or my yogurt.

I also didn't know that diet sodas are linked to sugar cravings. On road trips, I drink a lot of diet coke. At home, my drink of choice is diet tonic water with lime. It has always been my Drink since I got sober, something I really enjoy. I have one while I am cooking in the evening. I would have a lot of trouble giving that up.

Food for thought though.

Hi!
I like Diet Coke, and several other diet drinks. I don't know that it has any effect on sugar cravings (my cravings are for salty stuff), but I'm trying to avoid any diet drinks with Aspartame (a certain artificial sweeter) in it. Aspartame is poison...it's been linked to neurological problems and nervous system problems. Splenda is better, but I'm unsure of the safety of that. Aspartame was forced through the FDA by the manufacturers and i've read many articles and seen TV specials about the effects of it. I'm trying to avoid it. It's kind of tough though, because it's in children's vitamins, sugar-free gum, sugar-free tea (except for Arizona Diet Green Tea...good stuff!) and many other sugar-free products.

I wish you all the best. I've cut way back on diet soda, but haven't given it up completely (one one or two a month). I hadn't thought to connect it with any sweet cravings. I guess I should track that more carefully -- or just give it up like you!

Let's walk!

I'm enjoying my last one.....one day at a time. Yes....water, water, water (I usually do that anyway) and green tea when I have to have the caffeine after the morning coffee. It's time. I'll let you know how it goes....and if it helps with sweet cravings as I expect. I'm also hoping it helps my failing memory to eliminate the aspartame but not expecting anything in that regard. Mary, you have inspired me to try an experiment. I am going to give up diet soda for awhile, and see if it helps with the nighttime hunger that results in over eating. If it does help, I will give it up for good.

I applaud you, Mary. Good luck. I've always hated diet drinks ... the taste is awful. I gave up my coke habit a long time ago, but will treat myself to a real Dr. Pepper once in a while.

I couldn't agree with you more -- Diet anything is nasty stuff, keeps your sugar cravings going, and keeps you from losing weight.

I gave up both regular and diet anything many years ago, but I'm in your corner all the way!

anyone want to join me? I'm convinced that my diet coke addiction is at least partly responsible for the later day sugar bingeing. I have one left.....I'll drink it tomorrow then I'm done. Anyone want to join me in my temporary misery and/or give me a pep talk when I want to rationalize having one? let me know....I'll quit tomorrow - HA!
