See what you can make when you stick to a project? I've got a few blocks and that is it. But I enjoyed reading Barbara's stories. Carol

I enjoy reading Barbara Brackman's notes each month as she provides so much info about the history of quilts. Today's note features a pattern called endless stairs. It uses 2 1/2 " strips and what a great way to use up scraps! I love any quilt patterns that show the use of scraps and this one would be SEW easy! Happy sewing! Carol

Most of us have stopped making the blocks but you might want to go ahead and read this months block informaiton. Barbara talks about childbirth and how so many women had 13 children or more. Many died in childbirth and didn't know how not to have children. Interesting read. Carol

I've stopped trying to make the Grandmother's Choice blocks. As a beginner, there just weren't enough instructions for me to feel successful.

I'm thinking it may be time to retire this thread. I'm not interested in making anymore blocks and there were only a few of us participating anyway. So, is it time to table this and find another challenge? Carol

I'm enjoying the Grandmother's Choice quilt, even though there are several blocks that are beyond me. I'm going to either pick some easier ones from a quilt block pattern book or redo earlier week's blocks changing the colors around. It's been a challenge but I feel like I'm learning a lot, too. Wonder though if I'll ever get to the "Confident Beginner" category! LOL

Thank you Sandy for keeping up with this! Anyone can jump in at any time. I just printed off this week and last week as they seem simple. I have decided to nix doing any blocks that have to be printed off of acrobat as I have such a time with it. And I definitely do not have any spare time at the moment. Carol

Sandy, the colors of that star are so pretty and cheerful. The block looks wonderful!

As for me, I've never attempted applique so will probably skip this block and redo one of the earlier ones instead. I know someday I'll have to bite the bullet and applique but I'm not sure I'm up to it just yet. And this week's Row Along should keep me pretty busy. 56 1-1/2" squares!

I've done two of the blocks but forgot how to print the other two from Adobe acrobat. The
second block I printed and can't find it. The fourth block, I can't figure out how to print it, forgot the steps. So I may just be sewing blocks that are simple like this weeks and forget the ones I can't print unless someone can help. Sandy tried but oh well. There are 3 little blocks on the upper left corner of acrobat that signify printing I think. Am I supposed to be clicking on one of those? Carol

I would suggest you take your "B" and stitch a "D" piece to either side of it, repeat 4 times. After pressing your seams, at an "E" piece to one end of your unit.

Stitch a "C" piece between two of the above units, repeat. Then stitch the "F" piece between these two units.

The last, stitch the "A" pieces on each corner.

Hope it helps....

Sandy, the Kansas Sunflower block is beautiful!

I chickened out in trying to do that one. I've never done curves or handpiecing.

As for the New Jersey block that was posted today...I can't figure out how to put the pieces together. Does anyone know if there is a place I can look for construction help? I don't have any quilting software. Maybe I should invest in something?

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Yikes! I'm not sure about this 4th one. I've never done curves, circles or appliques.Nor have I done any hand piecing. There's a post in the photos section that is a How-To, so maybe that will help. We'll see if I get brave enough.

Carol, I just looked at my EQ7. The block is not only on Blockbase it's on EQ7 too. Look under EQ7's Block Library, Classic Pieced - Priscilla. That's the block. You can print it as foundation as is. That's rather difficult piecing so I edited the block and cut it into 4 quadrants. You can then paper piece each quadrant and then piece these together.

I went back and read over the comments on the webpage post, which really helped, tweaked my print size a little and I think I've got templates that will work. We'll see if I understand what I'm supposed to do! I'm going to give it a try, though. Good luck to all of us on this one!

Just looked at the pictures and even in their example they are not doing Y seams. If you are uncomfortable, mark your pieces 1/4 inch, stop on that dot, pivot and keep stitching.

Hello. I converted my 2nd block (Amethyst: Suffragettes) to a paper piece. I'm so happy I have EQ7 and block base. I printed out a paper piece for it. I wish I knew somehow to send it to you.

I finished the first block and posted it on the Grandmother's choice Flicker as well as on our Photo's in Quilt and Lose.

Thank you, Carol! Unfortunately, when I printed out the template, the B piece measures bigger than the 3-3/8" she says it should be. I'm going to try and resize it if I can. Should I be scared when I see "Y seam"? emoticon

I am computer dumb but with diligence I managed to figure it out. First you have to set up an account with adobe and acrobat.com. Then you sign in and download the templates to the acrobat.com. On the top left, there is a block to click that says download. Click on thatg and you can save it on your computer, in my documents it went. Then I was able to click on it there and it printed. Hope this helps. Carol

I just went to see the Week 2 block. Oh, dear. I guess maybe I'll have to do a repeat of Week 1 instead! I don't have any quilting software and the pdf didn't print out the right size. I've never used templates and I've never even heard of a Y seam! LOL

I hope you enjoy the class Carol. I've been thinking of doing that myself. The program itself has tutorials and the help section is very good. That's how I figured out how to do what I have so far.

If I knew how to use EQ7 I could add block base too. But sadly, it sits in the box. Taking a Quilt University class this month on how to use it. Carol

I saw that. This is such a good blog. I happen to have block base. It wasn't on my current computer...that's how old it is. I put it in and attached it to my EQ7. Now I can make the blocks any size I want..but I'm sticking with the 8" one.

Great site.

I think I'm going to enjoy this thread. I just finished the Civil War Quilt I made taking kaye England's class on Craftsy! I sew enjoyed the piecing and learning to understand triangles and geese and easy ways to sew them! Looking forward to making my first block! Isn't it fun to learn history as well? Carol

Hello everyone. Carol this is a really good idea.

I love history in quilts and finished hand piecing blocks for Voices of the Past, Volume II, A history of Women's Lives in Patchwork by Kaye England. ( I'm not the greatest machine piecer. )

This looks like a great way to use up my scraps. I've bookmarked the site and will be having some fun with these. ...

In between all the other things I have to finish.

I figured how to post a picture of my Grandmothers Choice block in my page gallery. It's a little poochier than it shows, but all in all, I'm happy with it. I think I'll ignore that short side for now and stretch it a bit as you suggested, Carol. Thanks for the encouragement.

Hey, 8 3/8 is pretty darn close. You can fix that by letting out a seam a bit or just ignore it and stretch it a bit when you sew it to the next one. Are you posting a pic on your page? We want to see it. Carol

emoticon Annie and Carol!
I so much appreciate the directions and the encouragement! I actually got the block made. It's not quite 8-1/2" all the way around. One measurement is only 8 3/8 across. But I did it! Thanks again for taking the time and trouble to help me and for the encouragement!

@ JAMARIGOLD - scroll down about 4 pages.....there are instructions to cut the Grandmothers Choice block.

A pcs - cut 5 square - 2- 1/8 "

B pcs - cut 4 squares - 2-1/2" and cut each one in half diagonally, which will make 8 triangles

C pcs - cut 4 rectangles - 2-1/8" X 3-3/4"

D pcs - cut 2 square - 4" and cut each one in half diagonally, which will make 4 triangles

I suggest you cut all your pieces out and lay them in place on the table.

Start with the corner (A) squares and attach the smaller (B) triangles to each side.

Press your seams and then attach the large (D) triangle to the unit you just created.

Think of the rectangles as a sashing strip between the units and the center square as a cornerstone.

It's all a learning process and the more blocks you construct, the better you will become!

JAMARIGOLD, you are never too green a quilter to attempt this. What great practice for you on a tiny block! If you look at Gmother's choice, it has 3 rows across and 3 down. The middle row is 2 rectangles and a square, one A and 2 C. Sew those together as pictured, CAC. The other 4 blocks are the same, just oriented differently in their placement. For these blocks, you need 1 large triangle, 2 small triangles and 1 A small square. Looking at the picture, lay the pieces out on a mat as they are shown in the picture. Then pick the pieces up and sew them as pictured. The small square with a triangle sewn to it on each side creates another triangles the same size as the larger triangle. Then you sew that to it to make the bigger square. Hope this helps.
The you sew C to each side of the square you just created making sure it is positioned correctly. Make 2 of these. Then sew the first segment to one side and then the other side. Hope this helps. Maybe there is someone on the boards here who can do a tutorial on a blog and then post it. Carol

I sure hope that I'm not going to be a pain in this thread for the next 48 weeks! I've never done a block without assembly directions. I tried to find some directions someplace else on the Net but couldn't find one with these cut pieces. Maybe I'm just too green a quilter to do this project?

This morning I had an e-mail from Grandmother's Choice and on the right side of her blog, you can join the Flickr group. There are already oodles of photos of finished blocks posted and many have posted their choice of fabrics for the quilt. Some people must really have a stash built up to pull this together. I'm impressed. I was kind of thinking scrappy. Got to get ready for church! Later. Carol

I was thinking of making smaller quilts instead of one large one. I make kids quilts for foster and adopted kids. So these blocks would be fun to do for that.

Yes, I will keep up with it and make sure everyone know what the next block is. Now I'm trying to decide on colors to use or whether to make it scrappy. I kind of like the idea of using a theme color. I have a book that highlights color by the 20th century decades. I might choose the 1900 decade of colors to use. They are slightly different than what I would normally use but you have to sew something you like. I agree, I have so many projects and half finished tops, I need to get busy. Football game today though. Maybe I ought to take a stack of fabrics with me and organize them while we are driving as it is a 3 hour drive. Or take a nap. Carol

Thanks Carol for finding this BOM site. I was looking for something to replace the states blocks BOM. I made this a sticky topic so it will stay on top. Could you inform us when a new block is up? I hope folks will keep us posted as to their participation and progress.

I'm in!

In my morning perusing the internet, here is another link for you which starts a 50 block of the month celebrating the women's voting movement in the early part of the 20th century! grandmotherschoice.blogspot.ca/ This BOM is created by Barbara Brackmon and will highlight the history of the women's suffragette movement! I love history and quilting and I also love the small block quilting using scraps! This would be so much fun. Let's create a group for it and I'll keep it going! Carol
