Yes, but I normally don't crave salt. I more crave sweets. I am getting better with the sweet things most of the time, so I am not so worried about them.

I'm out of soup, so may be able to resist the crackers now since I won't have any reason to open the sleeve.

Thanks. I will try to get more water down. I do have problems with it.

I think that weather may have something to do with my wanting food all day. We have had cold weather (for us) this week and I noticed today that even though I ate a protein breakfast (egg, asparagus and cheese) I was hungry within a half hour or 45 minutes (I mean stomach growling type). So I spread some cashew butter on a small tortilla and had it. I am now drinking tea to try to keep from getting hungry again too soon.

Other times I might not even know when it is a normal time to eat and might not get hungry from breakfast at 9-10 a.m. until after 3:00. So I am not sure what starts the cravings for something like crackers.

Yesterday I did pretty well, even though I did hae a very small piece of Tiramisu (we were celebrating my friend's birthday). We had Chinese and I get it without the sugar except in the sweet and sour sauce, which isn't much. I have also been trying to eat with chopsticks, which is hard for me. I started with soup, so didn't eat a lot of the main meal and have enough for a couple meals here at home..

Tisha, Thanks for the tip on the chicken. I have tried marinating it a lot, but I still end up with it dry, so I will try some lemon juice. Night before last I tried the salt water like they put turkey in on those cooking shows, but I guess I needed to do it for longer because it didn't work.

I have not heard of that Chinese potato type thing (sorry, can't remmeber the name you put down). Do you have to go to an oriental market to find it? We have a Korean on this side of town and Chinese across town.

TO ALL: I know that they say not to have fruit juice, but would juicing vegetables be okay? I'm sure I would need some apple or something because I don't think I would like all veggie, but it would be lower carb than straight fruit juice, I think. I know that most of the problem they say with juices is they take out the fiber.

Hiya,
I too have problems at the moment eating hard veges..not possible emoticon ..
Had my top teeth out last week ( put a prothese in straight away??) and for 4 days had to liquidize my food and sip like soup.. yuk!!! all mixed up together..
I had fought the gum decay since i was diagnosed with diabetes.. it finally beat me emoticon
I was doing so well with the nuts and fresh veges and feeling like i was achieving..so right now i have to have mashed potatoes and mashed veges and mashed meat ( thats so hard to do, and i have been eating custards instead with yogurt for my protien, i know its not ideal but am still experimenting)..
i posted help on the staff message board and have had quite alot of great ideas like to make my own nut butter, and food choices.. I'm not there yet as i have my pregnant dd here who has diabetes in her pregnancy aswell so at the moment putting her first...
I'm pretty upset that i have to eat more potatoes than i wanted but I'm trying to keep the portions as low as pos..
I do eat sweet potatos but they are too expensive to go compleyely ... I have managed to eat soft rice since yesterday but really slowly haha..
My dentist say's it will take about 4 months for my gums to heal so i will have to do this for a while...

Just a tip Fancy, try to soak your chicken in lemon juice, lime or vinegar before cooking.. It helps keep it tender.. actually i do this with all meats to tenderize...
I've been making alot of chicken soup lately aswell and i managed to eat the chicken as it gets really soft..
I bought some (chinese taher) ( a small earthy potato like veg) yesterday to put in my beef soup instead of potato, my dd gave me some money to get it.. its from the potato family and is less carbs so im giving it a try..
I'm not able to post my bs as i cant afford the strips but im due for my 3 month in the hospital in a few weeks so im curious how thats gonna be since the 2 weeks of too much carbs...

Thanks for the information. I am always overcooking my chicken and then it is so dry that I can't eat it.

I have some asparagus in the freezer that I blanched and then froze. Would that be okay to eat that way? I cannot eat broccoli unless it is very well cooked and cannot stand cauliflower although it wasn't tasted in some mashed potatoes that a friend made.

Some veggies are wonderful to blanch for a few minutes; cold blanched asparagus is incredible! If you're eating low carb, a few veggies with some hummus or ranch is a good snack.

I like to poach chicken breasts so I've always got some in the fridge for quick wraps, salads, etc. You can take the frozen ones (we buy them at Costco) and toss them in a big pot of boiling water, cover it, and remove from heat. Let sit 20-30 minutes (depending on the size of your chicken), and that's it. They always come out perfectly cooked and moist.

Thanks to all of you. I don't know what the crave for the crackers is other than the club crackers taste good to me. But I never used to want that many.

I have some problems eating the raw veggies because they are hard, but I will try to remember the tiniest of carrots and cut a bit of celery really small. The snack ideas are great Valerie. I do usually make chicken, but it was all frozen. Actually, when I pulled the pork chop out I thought I was pulling out a chicken breast. I have been trying to figure out how to get my chicken right since I cleaned my oven and I can't get the stink out of it now. I will try the pepperoni chips and I may try to make kale chips if I find any kale in our stores. I really appreciate the ideas.

So much about this disease is about planning and balance, in my experience (and opinion!).

There's just no sense in beating yourself up over what's already happened; we're not going to do it and I hope you won't either. It won't help anything and it'll only make that potential 'cheat' seem more soothing.

I find that by having a few things on hand I can handle most cravings or meal situations. Also, perhaps you can try to figure out what the cracker craving is telling you. Are you actually craving something crunchy? Salty? Savory?

Then, perhaps you can find alternatives that satisfy that desire without affecting your blood sugar too adversely. One of the dinners we eat a few times a night (mostly because I'm too lazy to cook every night!), is Chicken Caesar Salad. I grill or poach several chicken breasts so we've got them on hand, make my own dressing, use the best parmesan reggiano cheese, and even include a few croutons sprinkled on top some times.

Other things I like to have in the pantry/fridge are deviled eggs (remember, eggs are great protein; when the pork chop is a fail you could always scramble a few eggs), string cheese, nuts, and pepperoni chips, which I make for my 16 year old. You simply bake slices of pepperoni until they're almost browned, then pat them with a paper towel and let cool to room temperature. I don't eat pepperoni myself (personal choice) but when my kid is craving salty/spicy/crunchy, a few of them are great. I never leave the house without some nuts or something I can eat if I'm stuck away from home for too long.

I also drink tons of water and Sport Tea, so agree with everyone's advice there, too.

I understand your problems well. I have been off the program since I was ill last May. I've been trying to get back on board and it just isn't happening. In that time I gained 10 pounds and when I went back on the diet plan I gain an extra 4 pounds. Carbs are my big issue too. I have not been drinking enough water and portions are all out of whack. I will keep watching this site for a way to get back on track and hope that we can discuss and sort this out together. I have been busy trying to get the bloating under control too. Just keep trying and it will all come together soon. Pork chops are nastey sometimes and it is in the cut of meat you buy. The better cut is sometimes more expensive i have found. Well don't give up and remember that if you quit it's harder to get started again. Good luck and i hope we can help each other

Hi! sorry you're dealing with the cravings. It is hard to deal with for sure.

But the first question I was going to ask is about what your blood sugars are running as well. when we have the wrong kind of carbs, it shoots the blood sugar up then as fast as it goes up it crashes (which = hunger = craving more carbs to squash the hunger ----- then it becomes a vicious cycle).

1. Water -- drinking your water helps.

2. Nutrition -- IF there are foods that are "triggers" then for ME, the best way to handle it is just plain keep it out of the house.

3. Food journaling -- this helps ME to see my eating pattern, when I may be eating well, when I may be eating badly. It gives me some clues about where my trouble spots are.

Those are 3 things you can try for now. I am glad you're here and glad you reached out for help!

HUGS

Sometimes for me it actually helps the most to do one day of just water (with lemon) or herbal tea and a lot of raw veggies (with just olive oil and vinegar). It seems to reset my system to overcome cravings. If I get really hungry I may have some raw nuts in addition.
Don't worry about stuff like that. It happens to all of us. Just make a new start tomorrow. emoticon

Please, no one yelling that I am just doing wrong. I am having problems getting things back in control. Early this week I couldn't get my pork chop tender enough to eat and did not have anything else protein that I could eat. All I had was carbs, which I have been controlling all this year so far. Since I had that night I am having problems getting my eating under control. I am trying to start the day with protein like egg or meat, but I am still eating too much during the day and now I am having cravings for crackers. This is also making me extremely sleepy during the day.

Anyone got any ideas what I can do to get things back under control?

Darlene
