well your use of things can go up and down depending on what is happening at any one time..there may be days you don't need the metformin or days when you only need a 1/2 dose of what you usually take..diabetes changes from hour to hour and when you keep good track you have different sets of things to pull from..some days are under control with diet and exercise (and don't we all love those days) and then comes night..do we take the full dose of metformin do we take 1/2 or nothing at all and what is the morning result when it all changes again..it's just that kind of thing never a dull moment for sure the lady mary

wither you need to see your doc and discuss that metformin and find out if you really need it or not or can the dose be lowwered..there are no 'sets' in this disease and the less we have to add is for the better the lady mary

Having low blood sugar is not necessarily the same thing as having your blood sugar crash... I found out for myself that it's NOT HOW LOW, BUT HOW FAR HOW FAST. I once "crashed" at over 200! Shaky, sweating, felt like I was going to pass out... but I'd had no insurance--and no medication or insulin--for several months. I KNOW it was high, and the 200+ reading was at my new job, more activity than I'd been used to and voila`: huge drop in a matter of less than an hour. I don't know where I started for sure: I only had about 5 strips to my name that had to last til my first payday, so I hadn't tested that morning... LOL
Amazing the things we put ourselves through, huh.
Fact is, you can have the symptoms at any reading... and not have symptoms when you should have. I remember one time waking in the middle of the night, and wandering down the hall to the bathroom to check my blood sugar. I felt hot and a little lightheaded, but that was all... until I tried to put that blood drop on the strip and couldn't get them to match up. My DH came in, and finished it for me, and handed me a candy bar a minute later, which I gobbled down. The number on the meter was 35... according to my doctor the next day, I should have been unconscious, but the symptoms just weren't there.
It is important to know where the numbers should fall, and at what point it becomes dangerous... just keep in mind that not only is the insulin reaction dependent on how far how fast, we all have different tolerance levels, which are also subject to change due to other circumstances, so it will never be precise. That's one of the reasons why there are ranges instead of a given number. You have to just learn as much as you can (yay SP! lol) and test, feel your way and find out what is right for YOU.
I wish I'd had this forum when I was first learning--I'd have still had to experiment (I still do! LOL) but it would have saved me a lot of unnecessary anxiety! LOL

"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." Walter P. Chrysler said it, I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!
Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steadfast... and that works too! LOL
Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called the PRESENT!

I don't start to feel shaky until I get to the low 50's. I tend to check my bs every 3 to 4 hours because of that.

Just keep your doc in the loop. He should know that you experience these symptoms and what your numbers are when you do.....

(We use different measuring system than used in the US) I once asked my doc why I felt that way when my BS got into the 7's (142 US) I was told that my BS had been so high for so long that for me, that WAS low. Over time, the average dropped, and now I can go into the 3's and 4's without any effect.
The best thing to do is test test test, and if YOU are showing symptoms, that is where you start taking corrective action.
YOU can do it. You CAN do it. You can DO it. You can do IT.

the ranges are: some associations use 70 to 130 endos usually 80 to 120 the low is entirely dependent on the patient and where it happens that the symptoms come on my low starts at 85 now and has never been lower than 80 if your blood sugars have been high for a long time you will notice you get the symptoms at much higher levels that that that will change as you bring your blood sugars under control and within range the lady mary

I am also a nurse, but things have changed since I did nursing. It was normal to have a bs 120 and under and now not. They say anything over 99 is pre-diabetic. I was just wondering about the lows because I keep getting diffenernt stories. I know that if I hit 70, I feel shakey.

I have been as low as 58 once without any symptoms but I sure did a carb load fast. I'm a nurse and was taught that FBS for a non diabetic was 60-100 and for diabetics the target range was 80-120.I have seen patients react with symptoms of hypoglycemia even though their BSs were still high in the 200s but coming down fast from the 400s. I think you have had good advice that you should talk with your doctor, especially if the symptoms are frequent.

I was told a range od 80 to 120, I know there are variables.
I felt really bad, shaky and felt like passing out a while ago I had no idea why i felt that way.. I decided to take my blood sugar after exercising at a gym. I always have my glucometer with me if I am gone for a day or if I go to a gym. I took it and it was 80, I had never been that low before. I chewed on a glucose pill and felt better fast. Now I know if I am under 90, it is getting too low for me. I talked to my Dr about it and he said to do what I did. I monitor it often. I do find if I have a high FBS I try to be careful with carbs. I am a type 2 I use my diabetic tracker. Today i went to Dr. for blood work results and my A1c today 3 hours ago was 5.5 I began this journey at 8.8 and I use no medications now. I did it the Spark way Track food and exercise .
Talk to your Dr and ask what range he wants you in. Pat in Maine

I was told that 80 to 100 is normal, but diabetics are from 80 to 120 and you don't want to go over 120. It'll be interesting to see what others say.
