NO! NO! NO! We want Halloween and Thanksgiving first. We want a nice light *nowfall while we eat Thanksgiving dinner. Then *inter should hold off until the week before Christmas! That is how it is supposed to go! I said so!

Have to wear shoes all the time

I miss my barefoot days. I can't even go barefoot or wear slippers or sandals at home. I used to run around barefoot as a kid and growing up didn't change that. Even gardened in bare feet. Wore flip flops or sneakers for biking.
Now I wear a good sneaker, Brooks Ariel with a custom fit orthontic. I wear braces to bed. (if I ever sleep.) The RA caused Plantar Fasciitis and the bones are not to healthy now either.
The pain can be unbearable. The night braces keep my foot from flopping forward and letting the ligament shorten up. If it does, that first step is beyond my ability to describe.
I bought a pair of sandals from Crocs and they are the closest thing to a dress up shoe I own. They actually feel good for a little while with all those bumps inside to walk on. A bit like a massage . I know it looks stupid to wear sneakers with a dress but if I want to wear the Crocs, I change into them when I get where I am going..
I never used sunscreen in the frozen north but here I use a lotion with sunscreen and I use extra if I am going to be out and about. I wish more people here where the sun burns your hide off used at least a 10 or 30 maybe. I see young people on the beach putting on baby oil to fry themselves..
Thanks for listening, Hope

Casie 43: On another thread several of us had a very heated discussion on tone-up shoes with supporters and detractors! I am one of the detractors!
I tried Sketchers hoping to take pressure off my heels, which they did. But they also threw my weight forward onto the balls of my feet. After wearing them for several months I developed numbness in my toes. Did the shoes cause it? I don't know, I do have diabetes, but after a full day walking in the Sketchers I couldn't wait to get home and get them off!
I wear Easy Spirit now, I look for sales on line and buy shoes with thick, shock absorbing soles. They are much more comfortable.

The Skectchers and other "rocker" shoes work by keeping you off balance: definitely NOT good for exercising or for older people with balance problems. Despite the claims, there is no evidence that they actually improve posture or burn more calories etc.

avia adidas nike sketchers are not for exercise for sure you want a pair of shoes that offers support and you need to go to a sports store and try every single pair on until you get the one that FITS just right..i can guarantee you won't use the treadmill if you feet hurt the lady mary you might try rockport walkers also and then when you walk outside on the concrete your feet still feel good pricey but those are your feet and they hold you up and hopefully you feel better with just the right shoe

I don't wear stockings at all in the summer. I wear orthotics, so I wear sandals with a removable footbed and had orthotics made to fit in them, then I put cotton "footie" socks over the orthotics to keep them from getting grubby. If I'm just going out on the balcony or to the dumpster, I wear Sloggies from Target (you find them in the garden shop). They're rubber clogs, sort of like Crocs, but they fit better, cost less, and support my arches better.

Try putting them in the fridge before putting them on... back in the day, we used to keep our pantyhose in the freezer because they were less likely to run! LOL
No clue at all if that actually worked-- I developed an allergy to them, can't wear them without a rash--AND CHAFING... LOL Kathy

Stocking OMG no way not in this heat!!!! I go barelegged and for the few dark marks from my childhood scrapes and scratches on my legs... they make a thing called makeup Yep a little foundation and a just a tad of face powder does the trick for scars and discolorations. Pantyhose and hose wear is strictly for the winter at least for me. HOOOTTTT here in the deep south.

I hate socks too: warm! DH can't understand how I wear shoes without socks. He thinks it a very bad habit. And as for panty hose, don't get me started! Healthier since there is no pinch point but horrible synthetic non-breathing heat trap. Cotton tights are much more pleasant and last a long time too.

The true reason I don't wear socks is because not only are they hot but I have big calves and I do not like things tight on me any where.

Microfibre are great and so are any of the sport socks or sports wear. They behave the same way (wick away moisture so it evaporates) due to the engineering even though they are "synthetics". Those biking tops and shorts really do work plus they have the padding.
Cotton is the WORST and is constantly warned against for sports: it absorbs water but does not release it, resulting in soggy and hot or soggy and cold. Wool on the other hand is good and there are an increasing number of sports clothes made from wool including summer togs (light weight).
I increasingly buy the sports togs for casual wear to get double duty out of them. And there are many really attractive styles available.

Microfiber socks are better than cotton, from what my podiatrist tells me... it wicks the sweat away from the skin, whereas cotton merely absorbs it. But constitutionally I am incapable of paying that much for socks right now! LOL

I am a lady of color but I still used lotions with sunscreen. God has taken of the rest((SMILE)). I must admit I am not a fan of any shoes. If I had a choice I'd go barefooted all year long but that is not reasonable. I do not have foot problems. I do wear sandles when it is hot. If I wear shoes with it hot I feel closed in it feels like I am choking. (A mind thing). I am very careful and I keep a check on my feet. I perform my own pedicures. I love to paint my toe nails with wild colors in the summer. I apply vaselene on my feet and wear sock to bed when I do my pedicures. I have a big problem with ugly diabetic shoes. I am a young woman. Just because I have diabetes does not mean I have to look like I do. I am a big foot checker. I know how important it is. I almost cried when I had to give away my pointed toe shoes but I got over it.

I too, wear New Balance sports shoes year round. I reserve my flip flops and sandals for the deck in my back yard and in the house. I also use Banana Boat SPF 30 for outdoors.

I wear New Balance sport shoes all year round... and my makeup foundation has an SP of 15 and I wear that all year round too--and it pays off in more ways than one, most people don't believe me when I tell them I'm 57! LOL
"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." Walter P. Chrysler said it, I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!
Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steadfast... and that works too! LOL
Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called the PRESENT!

I mostly wear earth shoes and I do wear earth sandals. I check my feet in the morning and at night. Have not had any problems with wearing these sandals. I do not wear sandals everyday either.

I wear my New Balance velcro walkers and I always wear support knee highs from foot smart. They keep my legs feeling great all day. I wear them to keep my neuropathy under control. No pain ,tingling or numbness. The neuropathy is spine surgery related before diabetes diagnosis but it works for me. I never went barefoot in England and I am amazed to see children Bicycling in bare feet. I have seen some badly cut feet when kids try to prevent a fall from the bike by putting their foot down at high speed. The information on sunburn was new to me. I am chemical sensitive so I never use any creams on my skin. I will have to buy sunbrella for walking, Pat in Maine.

I work with glass so closed toed shoes are important to me.
In the summer, I LIVE in my Keens Venice H2 sandals. They're as comfortable as a sneaker (I work all day standing at my work bench). They come out of the wash looking brand new and I get compliments on them all the time.
I've got them in all sorts of bright colors like these: http://www.rei.com/product/821050/keen-venice-h2-sandals-womens-2010-closeout?cm_mmc=cse_froogle-_-datafeed-_-product-_-821050&mr:trackingCode=A9CA15C2-B849-E011-AFD7-001517384908&mr:referralID=NA

In the summer I wear Leather Minnetonka Moccassins (with soles) and in the winter I wear Skechers clogs. Probably not the best choices, but they both are very comfortable... I didn't know about the sunburn thing... I got sunburn this past weekend and had been working out and working in the yard a lot... But my BS was very high for me. Problem Solved... Thx a Bunch...

I mostly wear my tennis shoes. But, I have a couple of earth shoes that fit well. They have thicker sturdier soles so I think the work alright.

… you have to be extra careful during the summer?
Trying to be active or travel and stay in routine can be difficult. However, with a few precautions, you can enjoy the summer while also maintaining good blood glucose control.
You probably know that it isn't a great idea to walk around even on the beach in bare feet when you have diabetes. Did you know that flip-flops aren't really recommended either? They still leave the feet vulnerable especially to blisters and sores that could become infected if undetected or untreated. Do you wear flip-flops or have you found another summer shoe alternative? What is it – share with others so they can have healthy feet this summer.
Did you know that sunburns affect blood sugar levels? Being active during the summer can help lower blood sugar levels but that can be undone if you get a nasty sunburn that can make them skyrocket. Have you heard about the new FDA Sunscreen guidelines? Is it a challenge for you to use sunscreen? Will you be making changes in sunscreen with these new recommendations?
Share your thoughts here so we can all have a safe and healthy summer.
