Is anyone on this Team doing The Mediterranean Diet/Lifestyle. This is the one which seems to work best for me. However, I would like to know if anyone else is doing this and how is it working for them?
Coach Tanya, What do you think about The Mediterranean Diet/Lifestyle?

I'm Canadian and I find most members are American, so I'm looking for a BS converter to link to my Sparks Page. I feel this would help me to better understand what people are talking about when they use US #s. I was a Sparks member a number of years ago & at that time placed a converter on My Page, but I checked in Search and couldn't find anything about it. Could you please help me. Thanks :-) Gail

This is a time of year when anxiety and stress can affect our diabetes. Read my blog about Care to help! http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=5160766
Susan did the dizziness eventually stop? I am having that problem. My sugar gets to 107 which is normal I start getting shaky and lightheaded like I need to eat. It's driving me nuts

I always get light headed and dizzy when my sugars are dropping too low. I also get sweaty and shaky. My body is still adjusting to the fact that my BS are alot lower now. They were not used to that, so even in good ranges like 100 I would get the warning signs that my sugars are too low for me. Hope that helps. Susan

Ls wart6 I cannot comment as to the showering changing your level of sugars in your body, however time definetly does. I know taking your BS tests often is a hassle some times but you will get a better picture of what you are really dealing with by taking your sugars in this way.
Test before you eat, then eat and test two hours after you eat. Do this with each meal you eat most likely three meals a day. What happens is when we sleep all night our sugars do drop because we are fasting all night. Then if you eat after that fasting you want to see how your body handles what you eat. That is why you want to test two hours after you eat. You are trying to avoid the big high's and sharp lows. I did not get a good picture of my sugars until I started testing before and after. I always forget the after so I set an alarm to go off two hours after each meal. Other things affect our sugars as well, stress, exercise, water intake, sickness. Well I Hope this helps Susan

I am new to having diabetes. I found out I have it a week ago. I have been testing myself different times of the day to see how my sugar levels are running. I tested first thing in the morning and then again after showering and dressing but before eating my breakfast. There was a higher sugar level test after showering two days in a row. I am wondering if that is normal or if my coconut shampoo and conditioner are causing the rise. Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

What are your numbers when you feel dizzy and light headed. It could be your body adjusting or possibly something else. Let us know what the numbers are. If you are not checking your blood sugar when you feel funny you should be.

Hi I have type 2 and have had levels in the 200's mostly. Recently they have been normal in the 90's or low 100's. I started taking Metformin 1000mg only at night about a week or so ago. During the day I am having a lot of dizziness and feel light headed and shaky. Do you think my body is just adjusting to normal sugar ranges and this will pass? If I eat peanutbutter it goes away..but I want my numbers healthy...

I got a question. I want to know what affect excessive HOT weather has on your blood sugars? I've noticed it seems to drop in the excessive heat. Someone times you have no choice but go out in it.

Hi,
I have had type 2 since last March. My A1C went from 7.8 to 6.6 since then, which makes me happy. Losing weight slowly.
My question is that since I have started my Metformin 500 mg 2 times a day. I have really bad excessive sweating. Not as bad in winter, but now that weather is warmer, I get just trenched. Even getting ready to go out putting on make up and doing hair. My head will be trenched.
Anyone else have this problem. My doc says its my weight, but I am down almost 50 lbs from my highest weight 10 years ago.... It never happend in menopause just since I started Meformin. Thanks Sue
REMEMBER: I have had this before. I know what it tastes like, AND ITS KILLING Me ! IS IT REAL HUNGER OR HEAD & HEART HUNGER?

Hi, I'm new to SparkPeople and to Type 2 Diabetes but I'm determined to make it my new friend - it's going to be a great motivator to get me exercising and eating right.
I'm using the diabetes nutrition plan which is great, but I'm wondering how I should enter my blood glucose levels. Here in the UK we use different units (mml rather than the American mg/dl). They differ by a multiplication factor of approximately 18. So I have some questions:
Is it possible to have a drop down menu to select the units we use? In the mean time, does it matter if I use mml/l or should I convert all my results to mg/dl?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Sandy here. I just got done with a diabetic class at the hospital about a week ago. I had same question my BS was going up after I exercise and was told to eat about 15 carbs right before I start so my liver doesnt dump out so much. Seems to be helping me some.

JANUVIA OMG I just called the pharmacy for the cost of it. 42.00 OMG that is with insurance. Cost is a factor now I have to hold my breath and not take in air. My asthma meds total over $60.00 but that is every other month. WHEW the price of being sick is costly

It is higher during the day but around 3 in the afternoon it starts to drop and continues during the night. I have to eat a lot of carbs in the evening to get my sugar up high enough so I don't have problems during the night.

Was on it is correct. I only needed to take it for about 2 to 3 week as my morning sugars were consistantly high. My doctor said that he never had anyony with a low (6.3 at the time) A1c come in complaining about high morning sugars. He had me take the Januvia until the sugars were under control again and told me I could stop when the sugars went back down.
Trouble now for me is the Prednisone which is causing low (50 & 60's) morning sugars. Luckly I am off of that on Wednesday.

ARTCHICK1957, though it's never good for a diabetic to make a HABIT of eating sugar, it's a misconception that diabetics can't have sugar at all.... It's all about balance and portion control. I used to use artificial sweeteners but I got away from sweets altogehter for a while... and then my MIL made some lovely artificially sweetened desserts for Thanksgiving one year (she knew I was diabetic)... and I enjoyed them, but... yikes.
I have fibromyalgia, and went into one of the worst flare-ups in my experience. I thought it was a coincidence--until it happened again at Christmas. You couldn't PAY me to use them now! Besides, a lot of them increase your appetite--and who needs that? LOL
So what I'd do is this:
Stick to sugar--and the applesauce--but try cutting the amount In your recipes in half. Most of the time, there's way too much in the recipe to start with, and you don't always need it all that sweet. And yes, the portions should be limited. One two-inch cube of cake, one two-inch or three-inch cookie... and plan your whole day first ahead of time, including the treat, to make sure there aren't too many carbs all at once.
...and LIFEWALK, Maybe Coach Tanya can suggest some report ideas to the programmers that will eventually include that information. I would LOVE it too!
Until that happens, though, I have my own Excel spreadsheet that prints up into a half-page sized sheet... I did a year's worth and had them bound together in a notebook. It has a week at a glance, a place for six "meals" a day with carbs per meal and how much insulin I take each time, my weight, how much water I drink, my BP--even a checkmark if i've taken my meds... and also has two lines for notes below each day, where you could write in your exercises or whatever... and if you have Excel, you can do some tweaking if that's what you need... The back of the page (side 2) is an appointment calendar. When bound back-to-front, I can open the book and have my appointments and all my doctor data on what amounts to a single notebook page--and when closed, it's the size of a half sheet of paper so it fits in my handbag. It goes everywhere with me... and oddly enough, I have found it quicker than using the calendar on my phone when I want to find something! Very convenient and my doctor loves it!... let me know on SparkMail, and maybe we can find a way to email a copy?...
Kathy
"The real secret of success is enthusiasm..." Walter P. Chrysler said it, I believe it. That's what I want in my life--to give my imagination a chance, to live with energy and enthusiasm!
Ralph Waldo Emerson said 'Life belongs to the energetic.' But you don't have to be frenetic and hyper--some energy is quiet and steadfast... and that works too! LOL
Life comes in specific increments, which we receive as a gift of one moment at a time. That's why it's called the PRESENT!

Hello, I am not new here, I just don't stop by often. I am not diabetic but my husband is and when we eat at home I control what he eats because I cook and serve the meals. We are on a low fat, low sodium nearly sugar free diet. We both have many health problems as well as his diabeties. My problem is that I fear using too much of the artifical sweetner. Is it safe for him if I cook with a combination of sugar and artifical sweetner, and just limit the portions. He likes cookies and I am working on receipes to make them healthy and low in fat and sugar. I have been using unsweetened apple sause in place of shortning, half artifical sweetner and organic whole wheat flour. If anyone knows the answer to my problem, please post it. Thank you!

This might be an Idea for you Ladybugviv, I believe that if you pull out some chicken for you and pull out pork or steak for your DH then use the same fixings for both meals. This way a small healthy meal for both of you. Baking or grilling would help keep it healthy to. Usually if I cook pork, I use soy sauce or bbq sauce mixed in with mushrooms, broccoli and crushed almonds. I hope this helps.

Sounds like this might be where I belong. I just printed out the recommended diet and accompanying shoppping list and I am overwhelmed. I cook for my husband and son and neither one of them would eat this way and cooking for them and cooking for me is not going to work right now. How can I eat the way I am supposed to when I live with and cook for total carnivores whose "What's for dinner?" is a question of what meat (beef or pork) is the selection for the day. My dearest husband (DH) won't eat anything with feathers or fins and can't tolerate the smell of anything with fins even being prepared. My son is more receptive to eating healthy and backs my wanting to do so, He and I will prepare something for dinner that is really good and healthy but DH simply does not eat that night. I think that cooking two meals is the answer, but I need to work out the logistics of doing so. Does anyone do this? How do you do it?
When anybody asks me who I am, I tell them I'm a child of God!

Good Morning,
I have a quick question. I had a late breakfast (fellow office people made belgian waffles) had one waffle, fruit and a butter cream sauce (not much). I tested at 11:15. My first number was 353, NO that cannot be right, second was 241 on a different finger, best two out of three, third test was 179. Is this usual to have a different reading on different fingers? I am kinda confused but will take the lower number :)
Thanks.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I just wanted to see if other people have this happen. I think for a couple of times, I'll take BS before exercise and about 30 minutes afterwards.
Thanks for the feedback.

This is the way that the body works whether you are diabetic or not. I think that is why they stress that we take our BS before or after meals. After exercise is really to make sure that you are not going into diabetic shock or experiencing hypoglycemia.
If It is for me, it is meant to be. I can do all things with Christ Jesus who strengthens me. Keep pressing forward until you make it to where you want to be.

How soon after exercising are you testing. Exercise puts stress on the body, stress raises blood sugar. After you have rested from your exercise you BS should go down.

Do you mean it like because you're burning energy that your liver spews more sugar into the bloodstream? If so, it sounds like diabetics can't win for losing.

I think I understand it as this, when you exercise your body uses the stores in the body to provide fuel, so you burn more sugar. Sugar is the source of energy and that is why there is a more higher reading after exercise. I hope I explained this correctly.

Is there an explanation as to why blood sugars would be higher after exercising than before?
I'm thinking that since I am soooo overweight and have soooo much pain upon physical activities (especially walking), that the pain might be causing higher readings afterwards.
Any thoughts or comments? Does this happen to others?

Check through the back posts. I know we had some discussions on this topic. Some people have half a sandwich others have cheese and half an apple. You may need to try different things. Different foods affect different people different way. I can eat fruit but my nephew cannot. His bloos sugar spikes with fruit. If the pear and cheese did not work try something else. Keep posting on how you are doing and any other questions you may have.

Well, 9pm last night my BS was 129. I ate a half of pear and 1 oz cheese as a snack. Went to bed at 11:30pm. Woke up at 7:30am and BS was 143. I feel like there must be something I'm doing wrong but I just can't figure it out.
Granted, I've only been back on my program since March 1st. My high BS did come down amazing quick. But I know I have a long way to go. As stated before. My A1C on March 1st was 8.3. I haven't loss my enthusiasm but these fasting readings do bother me.

Thanks Foxstar. Last night bedtime BS was 102. This morning fasting was 155. Gets rather irritating. I've had two doc tell me it's nothing to worry about. I didn't like those answers. I will give the snack a try and see what happens. Thanks again.

What is happening is your liver is dumping sugar in your blood at night because it thinks you are starving. Try having a snack before bed of about 15 g of carbs and a protein. Don't forget the protein or BS will be even higher in the morning.

I have been a Type 2 diabetic since 1997. Had gestational diabetes in 1995. A problem that I have that no one has ever been able to answer for me (to my satisfaction) is why my fasting numbers are always higher than my evening numbers.
For example: Last night my post-dinner reading was 111. I don't eat past 7. But this morning my fasting number was 148. This is every day. My morning numbers are ALWAYS higher than my evening readers. A.M. readings are consistently in the 140s or 150s.
This seems to be a reason to be concerned but I've been told by two docs that it's not really a big deal or anything to worry about? Is this really true?

107 sounds fine with having the sugar in your coffee. Eating as if you had diabetes can slow down or prevent it. Because you had gestational diabetes you are at a higher risk for developing it later on. If you eat right, exercise and drink water you may be able to prevent developing diabetes. I would talk to your doctor about the chances of getting it. Your doctor would know your family history (any family member with diabetes, gestational etc.) and be able to tell you what you should do.
Keep coming back and read the back posts. Very good information there.

I was told that the test showed a reading of 107, which was high for a fasting glucose test, but ok for one that was non-fasting. I had forgotten and had a cup of coffee with sugar and a slice of bacon prior to the test. I did have gestational diabetes with my last daughter, fwiw.
Question: Can eating as if I have diabetes help prevent actually getting diabetes?

We need to know what the fasting number was. Even if youdon't need to be on this team you are welcome. If your levels are elevated you could be at risk for diabetes.

No offense meant, but I hope that I don't need to be on this particular team...A nurse told me that my fasting glucose [I assume, I'll check] was elevated. Now I wasn't in there to test my glucose necessarily nut ore for my cholesterol [153] and I had eaten a strip of bacon and coffee with sugar before testing.
Do I need to be concerned? Thank you in advance.

MAGSINGVAL you need to sit down with your doctor and get him/her to tell you what the expications are. Generally fasting should be between 70 and 120 depending on the doctor. If you doctor won't answer your questions get another doctor.

Tanya... I was just diagnosed December 1st with Type II. My first measurement was 245.. I didn't take the meds...and through diet and exercise I thought I was at least controlling it. I think I'm doing ok... but when I sent my numbers in to my doctor, he sent me a message that didn't sound like he was impressed with my FBS. Honestly, my goal was to be under 130 at least 90% of the time in January. I only had one reading for the month that was over 130. I was 144 that morning after only 3 to 4 hours of sleep and a couple late night crackers. What SHOULD my goals be? I'm confused. I'm not 'depressed' or 'feeling defeated'. I just want to know if I'm kidding myself and should reconsider taking the medications. Here are my numbers for AM only, since those are the ones he mentioned. None of my afternoon readings were over 110. Advice? Thanks.. 1/1/2011 7:28 AM 119 1/2/2011 8:08 AM 128 1/3/2011 5:47 AM 106 1/5/2011 8:48 AM 123 1/7/2011 7:18 AM 124 1/10/2011 5:16 AM 126 1/12/2011 6:29 AM 144 1/13/2011 6:03 AM 121 1/15/2011 5:42 AM 120 1/17/2011 5:35 AM 111 1/19/2011 6:13 AM 123 1/21/2011 6:18 AM 118 1/24/2011 5:30 AM 113 1/26/2011 7:34 AM 115 1/31/2011 6:05 AM 107
Rhonda226, I think what you're looking for is a way to add a shake if you have one. Just click 'add food' and then search for Glucerna. I think what you're seeing is an advertisement (at least there is on mine)

I am a diabetic and I dont understand the menu where it has custom food and it automatically has the glucerna shake on it. There is not a place to check off the shake if I have one. Is it expected that I have it each day since it is always there? &is it automatically added in or am I missing something?

Sodium hides in lots of things. It might be helpful to make a list of your most favorite items and star the low sodium ones for selection. Or start a daily log with sodium limit on top, then enter what you eat...go to lower salt choices when needed. have you tried sodiumfree seasoning in recipes you make yourself?

HELP...HELP...HELP... I have a problem with sodium and not being able to see how much I have had until end of day report. Is there any way I can change a setting to be able to see sodium when choosing my food? Also, the program wants me to eat at least 1600 calories a day which I think is WAY too much for someone who can not run 5 miles a day. I can hardly walk 100 feet let alone run.

Can plain Greek Yogurt be frozen without ruining it? I have tried Yoplait Lite and it turned out terrible, but there is a good buy on large containers of Greek yogurt this week at Target.
Also, what is a good way to sweeten it when making something like a smoothie? I used honey, but it seemed to take a lot.

I just scrolling through blogs and I caught site of yours. I hope you had the opportunity to change your program
If not I think that you may have to reset everything. From your start page, click on account/email preferences. Half way down the page, you'll see reset. I will wipe out everything that you tracked up to this point but you can keep all your points and favorite foods. You will then be able to go back and add the diabetes management program. I hope that helps. This is the link the the help: http://www.sparkpeople.com/community/help_answer.asp?id=4

Coach Tanya, can you tell us the reasoning why SP will not allow us to change our goals for carb, fat and protein if we have signed up for the diabetes control. I would think a lot of us would want what our doctors goals are for us instead of SP demanding we stay with your suggested levels. I understand if you want to make a strong recommendation not to change but I am having to ignore your levels anyway. This sounds counter productive. This sounds a bit stong but want it to be constructive.

I finally started losing weight on Byetta (10) + Metformin (2 pills with breakfast and 2 with dinner). I wait an hour after I inject Byetta to eat and it completely kills my appetite. Holla!

This is what finally got me motivated to take my meds and get serious about this diabetes thing: my diabetes instructor showed me what a beaker of my blood would look like with the numbers I was showing - it looked like molasses!! I started to cry right there and then and realized that what I couldn't see or feel was still killing me. And I have a kid that needs me. I've been tracking my food every single day since then, taking my meds. I still am unable to test but I'm going back to the endocrinologist for help. This isn't going to defeat me!!

Yes = I use Byetta twice a day. I love it because it curbs my appetite. But you have to wait an hour after you take it before you eat in order to get this benefit.

Anyone have an idea how many carbs are in Mylanta? I woke up with an acid attack in the wee hours (the Nexium had worn off) and took two, and my morning blood glucose reading was way out of whack. I'm new to this and I didn't even think about it until I saw the reading.

Sorry I am posting again, forgot to give a wonderful tip on crystal light. I use the lemonade and tea for this. To mix up flavors that crystal light does not have, I use kool aid NON sugar packets. The sugar from the lemonade and tea crystal packets more than make up for the lack of sugar in the kool aid. This way if you want cherry lemonade you can have it :). I also use grape with the lemonade, great flavors to choose from now.

Ok maybe a little advice from the masses out there. My diabetic doctor put me on actos and junuvia with my insulin regiment. I tried the junuvia but it raised my sugars by 100 points. Is that normal?? I started on a low carb/cal diet this past week and been surprised at my numbers with out either medicine. I go see my doc next week and hopefully I can continue with this lowered sugar streak. Also, does anyone feel less inclined to eat when their sugars are in the 100's?
Thanks,
Yuni

I use the Sweet Tea Liquid Stevia, too, for just about all sweetening. I have the lemon flavor for in tea. I think out here they quit carrying the Chocolate Raspberry, though I used it when they carried it.
It does seem high in price, but if you use the liquid it really goes a long way. The bottle I carry with me that is all I use if I am out somewhere and have tea, I got last July and it is 2/3 full still.

Hi SecondChance51 Those little blue packets contain dextrose, maltodextrin, and aspartame. They can say it's sugar-free because it doesn't contain sucrose. But you'd be hard-pressed to find two carb molecules that hit your bloodstream harder and faster than dextrose (another name for glucose) and maltodextrin. Have you ever tried stevia? I'm especially fond of Sweet Leaf Liquid Stevia (Chocolate Raspberry's my fave). It looks super expensive, but you only need a few drops.

I know it happens when your ( our ) sugar in low ,. I also think when the BP is low but.
I don't get on this site as much as I would like. I happen to notice that it started back in 2007. I cant wait till they get the nutrition part up.
I had a hard time getting to sleep last night, probably due to napping too long yesterday afternoon. I finally went to sleep around five a.m. or so. When I woke up, I went downstairs to rustle up some breakfast, and as I was pouring my coffee, I felt like I was going to black out! I've never had that happen unless I was really sick. Does this happen when blood sugar is too low or blood pressure too low? At my oncologist's office on Thursday, the nurse said my bp was really low.

Hi! I went to the ortho doc today, and he gave me a big shot of cortisone. He said it would probably raise my bl. sugar. How long does that higher reading last? I didn't think to ask him.
