ANNADAVISON, cook baby, I'll come and eat. THANKS!

Winston Churchill commanded his troops to "SINK the Bismarck", and they did, so for Christmas we will sink the bismarck by not over-indulging. Yes I will indulge but with Gods help, "I WILL NOT OVER-INDULGE"! SETASIDE1@YAHOO.COM

Here's one I'm genuinely trying hard to do....

With the increase of instant access free recipes online, cook books are becoming less and less necessary, so I only use specific books for specific recipes. If you (like me) love to cook and own dozens of cookbooks, but rarely use any given book for more than one or two recipes, copy those recipes down and save them in a notebook, ringbinder, etc. By doing this you can condense 100 books to just 1, and you'll wade through less meals you dislike to find the ones you do like.

Just because you have been through the rain of life doesn't mean I have to walk around in wet clothes forever; there is a warm towel, a big hug, and a mug of low fat cocoa waiting for you somewhere!

I've been tackling my book collection lately. And I'm committed to checking the library first if I really want to buy a book. There are some I have that I'll read again, but mostly I have books I either plan to read or realistically will never read--those are going out. I usually donate books to the county library, because what they can't use they can sell to some other agency.

And for whatever I donate, I try to remember that this item will bless someone else who really wants it.

Best of luck to you on your simplifying journey!

Books are a big problem for me.
Books, clothes and craft supplies.

I am moving and will have FAR less space so I am having to sell and give away a huge portion of my belongings.
It is not easy.

the livingroom in our new house needed some seating and a coffee table. my aunt had given me a couch from the 60"s,awhile ago, it never had a home in my old house because it was to contemperary looking. now in the new livingroom it looks great. it has cushions that sit on a oakwood frame. you can see under it and I like the visual. it looks lighter less bulky like my other couch that has kickpleats. I paired it with a cedar chest that I put a runner on and I have storage for my blankets and quilts that we like to snuggle with during the winter.

I am moving into my dads old house. we are downsizing from a 2 story 4 bedroom home to a 1 story with 3 bedrooms. I like the smaller space. we are adding a library/ office in the front. I can't wait a place where I can get away and read or listen to music without the noise of the tv.

I like books on audio also. I think its nice and relaxing to hear the readers voice.

I like having fewer things. I cleared out the bathroom and bedroom to get ready for selling the house and I wish I did it sooner. I like reading from a book not a computer. A computer keeps me awake at night and I would rather relax and ease into sleep with a book. I listen to a lot of audio books from the library and read books much less.

Is it considered clutter if you enjoy the books? they have their own place and it feels warmer to me toturn a page and more enjoyable, then flicking a screen on a monitor. aren't you only exchanging one computer for an other one? people talk about not wanting to complicated their lives, but is being on a computer to read any less complicated?

whozethere - did you enjoy the new to you books?

I ordered 2 used books through Amazon last week. I didn't pay much, but I really try to avoid the printed media since it creates clutter too easily. I ordered these two since neither were available through the Kindle bookstore. I do have the Kindle app on my blackberry, but the window is too small to really enjoy reading a book.

I recently subscribed to a knitting magazine since a digital version was available. I plan to upgrade my smartphone to an iPhone in early December. The Kindle reading app is available for the phone & I am hoping with a bigger screen, it will be more enjoyable.

I know several book apps are available for the laptop. I just don't relish being glued to my computer to read a book.

I, too, have hundreds of books. I was told that I could actually open a small library. So, I am going through them and deciding what I want to do with the ones that I no longer want. I will definitely look into some of the suggestions that have been made here.

I donate books to a thrift store that raises money for a hospital.

I went around the house this weekend and took pictures of things I wanted to get rid of and posted it on Kijiji (more popular than Craig's List here). I got rid of a framed print in exchange for a gift certificate for a restaurant. Gave away a 1984 wood cabinet TV, cabinet, hand weights. Sold 2 arm chairs and an ab roller. Some of these things were big, bulky and heavy and people came and carried them out of the house and I am so happy.

I'm doing the same thing (reading or re-reading lots of my books so it is a slow process), and the library is also a very good place to send them. If they can't be used there the library can sell them and buy books that are needed.

I'm also trying very hard not to BUY more books. If the library doesn't have it and I want it I'll wait 30 days to see if I still feel a need to buy it.

Another way I'm simplifying is trying to get junk mail removed and replaced with e-mail where appropriate. Most credit card companies will send e-mail notices of statements available, and lots of companies that send catalogs are glad to save postage by sending e-sales or other announcements. Deleting is much easier on the environment and our peace of mind than wasting paper and recycling energy.

I was reading a book the other day and the question was posed to one of the characters:

Why do you keep all of your books. The answer was because they showed who the person was - that he had graduated from college, the types of things that he enjoyed reading about, and it was a status symbol.

This made me stop and think. When I collected a lot of my reference books it was because I was in Africa and I didn't have ready access to the computer. Will I read my fiction books again - probably not. Anyway, I have started a slow process of getting rid of my books. First I try to sell them on Amazon (only the more unusual books sell well there), those that were more popular are traded at a local book store for presents for family and friends, those that don't trade are then giving to a thrift shop. My shelves are looking less cluttered on a day to day basis.

Let's see how many ways there are to simplify. Post ways to simplify our lives....whether, it be to simplify our home, work, mind, any area that we deal with.

By posting....this could bring to attention or help others in ways that maybe we never thought of.
