Sid--

I agree with Res that IS an excelelnt idea. It could get more in the gourp involved and be interactive an outstanding idea. Plus one less thread to take care of cant be a bad thing either :)

Let's do that for July and forward okay?

thanks that is a great thought!

Hey Gar,

I was thinking that as the new month is coming we could just post our deficits in the Daily Weigh In and Work Out report. That way it is one less thread for me to keep up with and we are engaging with other members of the team more. It will be good for us to interact with the others as we will help them and get motivation from them too. Also more people might get involved with it if we move over there. What do you say? Sorry, but there are just too many threads for me to keep it going. I am spending too much time on SP and not enough on me. I hope you understand.

Hugs,
Sid

Hey Gar, you are doing an awesome job! emoticon

I have been a bit off the wagon for a few weeks, but climbing back on now. Yesterday I cleaned and scrubbed the house with a vengeance for 6 hours and cleared my head. I am now in the right frame of mind to kick my butt again!

Burned serous calories cleaning, but no real workout.

GO FOR IT!!!

Hey Sid

I am surprised to find that finding the "perfect" pair of shades is not as easy as I thought LOL! I had a great training session last night. started with about 10 minutes cardio on the elliptical, followed by exercise ball squats (ball against the wall) step ups, flys balance exercise, then machine row and biangular chest really worked up a sweat in only 20 mins.

I may need to get a 2nd job to afford the personal trainer LOL

Oh, it is creepy, but I am slowly getting used to it. Finding getting he lense in is easier than I thought.

I'm glad you are taking today off, I should but will probably do the wog later i need that even though kinda sore fro the workout but not as sore now as I was earlier.

I'm glad you're feeling better, I know I don't need to tell you to take it easy though :)

Hope you have a super day too!!

hugs,
Gar

Hey Gar,

Hope you found some cool new shades! Contacts must be difficult getting used to! i have never tried but it seems creepy to put something in your eye!!!

Have fun with that PT! You will pass me by in no time as I am not working out as much as I should. I am taking today off to cause of my back, but I am starting to feel better already!

Hey Sid

I had a good weekend, started wearing contacts and had fun picking out sunglasses (still having fun at that actually LOL)

Take it easy on the KB's it seems so easy to go overboard (I speak from experience) hate to see ya hurting... -500 is good I am catching up to you in total points just as long as I watch how much it eat :O) Also I have a free session with a personal trainer this evening that should be great!!

Have a great day!!

sorry I have been busy lately with a project at work. It is going well though and it should have some positive impacts.

I got to the pool today and joined in with my old master's swim team. We swam 2.5km and it was great! I was the slowest today, but I wasn't winded or hurting, so that made me happy.

My SwiMP3 player had no batter charge and I forgot to check it before packing my bag, so I didn't get to try it yet. Next week I guess. I LOVE SWIMMING! I have missed the pool. The only problem is that I sneeze for hours afterwards. I guess I have chlorine allergies.

I am not sure of my deficit yet today, but it should be good. I need to eat a little more as i am still hungry. Might go for some watermelon.

WONDERFUL NEWS!!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I am so glad to hear how successful you have been--AND not gained weight doing it!!!

About your weight now going down, I am going to suggest you up it to 2500 calories a day. I am sure that your deficit is too low. Try not to eat under 2000 ever. How tall are you?

Tomorrow is going to be a pool day yippee!!!

Hi Sid!!

Well it was unintentional I assure you :) Got off to a great start today! got on the elliptical and did 15 minutes chewed up 200+ calories. Then at lunch a 30 min. walk to the store and back to buy (you guessed it) Oranges! LOL I am so pumped not sure what I will try next, maybe kayaking!!! :) You are welcome to as many leaves in my book as you wish! !!

I do like oatmeal but sometimes don't have time to make it think I should leave a box at work to make with hot water in the microwave so I can always have a good breakfast!

Well hey Sid you broke even that's better than the alternative. With all my activity I just wish my weight would nudge down just a couple of lbs. I seem stuck around 260 for some reason!!

Great about your swimming! I share your modesty, and until I get in shape i wont even think about buying speedos LOL I hope you enjoy your swimming. And I am glad I could help and motivate ya. That's the best feeling of all!!

Hugs to you,
Gar

Great stuff Gar! You are really putting me to shame with how motivated you are in your workouts! I have to take a leaf out of your book now!

We have been making oatmeal in the morning--real stuff not the quaker. We were making quaker, but have switched to the real thing since last week and I gotta say I love it! Delicious, filling, and soo good for you! We just boil some water in a kettle, pour it in, the bowl with the dry mix and jump in the shower. By the time we are ready to eat so is it. We make the quick stuff during the week, and the real traditional stuff on the weekends. I am in love!!!

I was bad today--1900 cal --so no deficit! Breaking even with just a short walk.

You are making me gear up for the pool again. I think I am finally ready to brave my bathing suit (full one piece from neck to knees! LOL! no bikinis yet!!!) I will give it a go on Wednesday!!! THanks for the motivation to get back in the water!!! Have fun with the roller blades!!!

Hugs,
Sid

Hey Gary, How are ya, matie?!?! Great job so far!!! emoticon

About the bran. Not such a great idea, and there are sooo many alternatives that are so much better for us. Wrote a blog on this topic and will post it below to make it easy.

Actually, any milk cereal is bad for you, to be honest, and was only made popular to increase daily sales. Put together with grains, the milk is a trophological nightmare for your digestive track, leaving all sorts of room for fermentation, rot, and hardening of the colon.

Here's stuff on Bran, anyway. Have a great day!!!

First, stay away from commercial brands of bran fiber and pills that stimulate peristalsis. There are a few reasons for this. First, bran.

As far as fiber goes, bran is very corse. As they pass through your bowels, they leave micro cuts that can be easily infected with harmful bacteria that generally inhabit your intestines. The real problem occurs when the intestinal tract heals over these open sores, with the bacteria still inside! The results can be fermentation, gas, sluggish bowels, possible cancer. The fact that most have bran cereal with micro bacteria already existing in the milk and you're almost garanteed to have problems down the line.

Next, rather than take pills to stimulate peristalsis, try probiotics. They fill you tract with continually needed healthy flora to help combat unhealthy bacteria, aid in digestion, also act as a dietary supplement, and stimulate peristalsis--the healthy way.

Another thing you can try is having either fresh or powdered/pill form barley grass. Not only does this work, but it does wonders for your enzyme count, and blood.

If you need to take a powder, try taking psyllium husk. It's gentle, swells in your digestive tract, and works like a broom, helping to get rid of impacted wastes that might be impairing your body's ability to expel waste efficiently. Just be sure to drink a full glass of water immediately after taking it, as it swells very quickly and you don't want it to get stuck on the way to the bowels.

There are many excellent alternatives to take than bran and commercial products that claim to help, but really hinder your colon's power to help keep the body clean and regular, including clorella and spirulina, excellent micro algaes that are also dietary aids.

Hey Gar,

Thanks, and don't worry, I am genki! I feel pretty great now that I am getting a bit more sleep in. I really need it right now.

I am glad to see you are going easy with the roller blades! LOL! Sounds fun! Great that you found a good book as well. I will have to look it up.

I just checked up on your eating log. Looks really good! I see that you eating more oranges rather than drinking them! Great! Lots of fiber and grains in there too!

TWO small points that might help
1. about bran--I will get Darren to explain that one to you as it was he who taught it to me.
2. I know tuna needs some flavor to zaz it up, why not try adding salsa, mustard, diced vegetables, pickles, olives etc? Try to mix it up instead of always using Miracle Whip. I see you are going really easy on it and your calories are very modest though so don't take this as a criticism. You are eating the same thing everyday, which can get boring--which leads to bad snacking for me anyway. Changing it up a little could be an opportunity to get more greens in--I like adding diced tomato, olives, pickles, celery, and cucumber with some mustard and pepper to give it a real flavor punch.

Just a thought. Wanted to let you know that your eating looks great!

About BRAN...see Darren.

Hugs and keep up the great work!!!

Sid

I had a 100% perfect day, but if i had exercised my deficit would have been huge. I didn't eat as much as I should have, my hubby suggested double ice cream! I might swing some bells anyways just because I feel good when doing it!

Hey Gar, sorry you had a tough weekend. That's alright! You can get back on track now. Too bad you lost power for so long, that's strange so early in the summer.

Your SP page is already set up to see your food/calories/fitness. There is a link at the very bottom Left corner of your page that people can click on to see your reports. That is why I was able to see what you were eating. You can enable or disable this in the edit mode of your page at the top left corner by checking or un-checking the options.

Did you get the ipod+nike shoes? I love to use the ipod+nike to track my progress/calories/distance/personal records/speed etc.
On Saturday I had an hours jog and covered 8.5km. I also broke my PR, so I was pretty psyched about that.

Today I did a LOT of KB training and tried Darren's video for the walking plank and push up in BODY WEIGHT EXERCISES thread. It was tough but really cool. I loved it!

I have been wrong about my BMR all this time. It is not 1400, but rather 1900! What a difference.

Today:
1350-1900-510= -1060

emoticon

PS be careful on those rollerblades--I am speaking from experience here! emoticon

No prob!

The trouble with any fruit or vegetable is that as soon as you cut it open it starts to lose it's vitamins and minerals to oxidation and the hydrogen bonds break down. Therefore, the longer the time from preparation to consumption, the more the nutrient value is degraded. Also, juice is a lot easier for your body to bread down and turn to sugar. You must work a lot harder to eat the orange than drink it, so your body assimilates it better. Even if the orange and the juice had the same caloric value, the results of eating/drinking are very different in terms of blood sugar and fat storage.

If you really want juice, go for vegetable juice instead as it has a lower sugar load. You can still get the same calories from it, but less sugar. Be careful of salt though. emoticon

I will keep checking on your food log over the week, so be sure to log everything so that I can help you a bit more.

Cheers,
Sid

Wow Sid thanks for all the good advice!

I can certainly see what you mean all the way around and i just am grateful for the advice and will take it to heart. One question, I thought regular old OJ was healthy and only 100 cal. per glass but i see what you mean, I had an orange at work. I also see waht you mean about the plateau and all. Seems if I eat less body could go into starvation mode too and start storing food as fast - hence no loss....

Thanks I will definitely apply the things you mentioned! Appreciate ya Sid!! And i will find out how to make my own peanut butter its gotta be better than the store bought and alot less junk! thanks for alot of great info!!

Hey Gar,

I have some concern that you really aren't eating enough. You ought to be having closer to 2000~2500 calories with the exercise you are doing. You will not lose weight healthily eating so low. Also you will hit plateaus and slow your metabolism. Also, you appear not to be eating many greens and too many proteins at one meal. A greater variety of fruit other than just bananas would be good too--especially berries.

Moreover, it is best not to drink your calories (ie: orange juice). It is much better to eat an orange than drink sugary juice. I would also switch to a natural organic peanut butter, or make your own, which is easy to do. You can sweeten it healthily with organic honey or maple syrup. I don't mean to lecture though, so do as you like. Just my thoughts after viewing your meal log.

I think you need to up your breakfast calorie load and lunch as well. You can eat lighter in the evening. Eat your calories early so that your body has time to burn them off over the day. Be sure to also eat a small meal or snack with protein within 20 minutes of workouts to prevent muscle deterioration.

Feel free to disagree. Only you can decide what your body needs.

Hi SId thanks for the great encouragement. I will chekc the challenges you are talking about thanks for reminding me. Not sure about my #'s from yesterday they seem "odd" tell me what you think. I double checked everythign I ate that I know is right but... ;)

calories in = breakfast 310, lunch 240, dinner 397, snacks (healthy) 780 total of 1727

1727 - 2249 - 979 burned = -1501

see what I mean is that right? seems so high..

thanks

Sounds good! There is no exact science to these things. We are all just too individual to boil us all down to one number. Take a week and figure out what you need. We have all month to find out, and beyond. The body is a very dynamic and mysterious thing.

Enjoy getting to know yourself better!

I couldn't take a day off yesterday (though I'm very glad I didn't it showed me something) and this morning first thing after breakfast I did some swimming (not much tho couldnt do more than about 10 mins --sore).

I was thinking maybe I would take a week and do an average of the last 7 days and use that? that would give me a good bench mark. How does that sound to you?

I will be sensible and listen I promise. 800 might be about right, but in order to do that I have to eat more and exercise less... And let me know what you think too..

Thanks Sid!!!! Hugs!!

Gar

Keep on swinging those KB's, because they won't swing themselves :)

Gar, you are really going to blow me out of the water! emoticon

I don't really know how much a healthy deficit is for you. Please be sensible and listen to your body. Set your own limits and let me know what they should be. I earlier emailed you that I thought 800 was good, but it looks like you go over that even. So, what do you think is appropriate for you?

I will go and edit the challenge for everyone. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Sid that is really outstanding. Sounds like you had a really good day today. Awesome!!! I love this because it makes me track everything I put in my mouth and helps me be more disciplined about it too. I am so glad you came up with this. I wish everyone would it would (IMHO) revolutionize their efforts!)

Hugs

TUESDAY RESULTS
===============

2023 eaten - 2249 BRM - 630 = -856

Did a 25 min. walk at work for 230 calories then a 34 minute wog (2nd day in a row--a new accomplishment for me btw) for 400 calories total of 630 burned exercising. Giving a nice deficit for the day.
