My RKC-certified instructor started me out with 6 and 8kg...which is about 13 and 17 lbs.

I always know Lorraine has my back to give good newbie advice. Yes, 10 lbs is too light to do swings. The video doesn't use recognized, traditional KB moves, although it does have some 'swings' in there. She doesn't do swings correctly and many of the things she does will likely get someone injured.

There's a thread on here that cites the recent ACE study about kettlebells. It states you can burn up to 20 calories a minute, which is true for that particular type of workout, which is a very advanced workout.

That being said, using a heavy bell for swings burn an amazing amount of calories and has the benefit of providing cardio and weight training.

If you're serious about using kettlebells, look through the threads and also read some articles on Dragon Door. They're amazing tools to work with and well worth learning.

If you haven't already, do some research on the site here. There is actually a post that deals with dvd reviews.

I watched one Angie Miller DVD and that was enough to know that her form isn't top notch and it basically seemed to me to be yet another semi-celebrity fitness guru jumping on the bandwagon with no actual knowledge of the KB. There was a lot of fluff in the DVD....dancing around while holding the bell etc. I wanted to smack the silly smile off her face....lol...

Read some of the other newbie posts. Ten lbs. is way too light, even for starting out. If you still have the receipt, I'd return both the bell (for a heavier one....at the VERY least 15lb.) and a higher quality DVD. Lauren Brooks, the Iron Core series, Andrea DuCane are good places to start. Also these sites:

www.dragondoor.com
www.giryanation.com

Welcome aboard btw! :)

Swing Like You Mean It- RKC Style

Currently swinging either a single 55 lb. or two 25 lb'ers.
