I haven't looked at this much-been a crazy week. My question is how late does this go? I'd like to join if I can still drag myself out of bed for bootcamp at 4:30 AM the next morning...

I'm up for walks in the evenings after 6 PM and all day/evening on the weekends. I'd be interested in joining the Martin Nature Park Walk, along with my hubby (Pappy2Ethan).

And isn't the Zoo open until 8PM during the Summer months?

Gretchen I'm so glad that the 10th will work out better for you. You should be all moved in by then!

I haven't seen anything about walking this Saturday, which is just as well since we'll be at the dog show downtown and won't be able to come. We have a friend who is showing a Scottie and of course we must check out the westies!! You can find some great dog things there too, from supplies to gifts.

@ Ella, I can post this as an annoucement, that way some can see it, and also list it on the monthly newsletter as well.

I most likely will, as I like to post as much as possible.

Ok folks, I just called Martin Nature park and they're full for this week's night hike. They do have another scheduled for the 10th & the 17th. With my family & myself there's 10 of us and I know that Bob & Gretchen wanted to go so I went ahead and reserved 12 spots for the 10th. He said that I can call back and change that if needed. They limit the size of the group to 30 so I need to know quick if anyone else is interested in coming-apparently they fill up fast! Bob & Gretchen you're not tied in to coming on the 10th-I just wanted to reserve a couple extra spaces in case.

If everyone will let me know ASAP I'd greatly appreciate it!!

Walking Partner Wanted!

I'm training for the Susan G. Komen 3 Days for the Cure (60 miles - 20 miles a day for 3 days). My weekend walks are long and I really would love company and mutual encouragement! I walk just about anywhere, although Lake Hefner and the OKC River Trails offer the longest trails. I really prefer to start early - no later than 6:30am if possible.

This Saturday I will be walking 6 miles. Sunday 5.
Next Saturday - 7 miles. Sunday 6.

Is there anyone who would like to join me?

Thanks BOBF15 for pointing me to this group.

Weeknights are pretty tough for us as we have bagpipe practice on both Monday & Thursday nights. I usually have choir practice on Wednesdays, but am off for the month of July so that might work. I give my granddaughter guitar lessons on Tuesdays so that leaves Friday or Saturday nights and Wednesday nights in July. However, not everyone can make every walk, so don't worry about us if others can make a different night. We can always catch a walk another time. Do what works best for the most people.

How about a later evening walk, we have a good bit of daylight still and it would be cooler, say 7 PM time slot.

Weekday nights or Sat?

Let me check with hubby, he has to work on his birthday this week so I'm waiting to see what the birthday boy wants to do this weekend. This sounds like such a nice event! I'll get an answer before you have to make reservations. Thanks for heading this up!

I had to leave a message at Martin Nature Park to make reservations. I didn't hear back from them yesterday & I was too busy with Westie Rescue all day to call. Tried to call this morning but they're closed on Mondays & Tuesdays, so I'll have to call to make reservations on Wednesday. Just thought I'd let everyone know so they won't try to call until then!

Didn't realize it, but today was our last June date, so will transfer this thread over to the July Walk and Talks.

The rotation seems to work pretty well, so since we will be in Stars and Stripes for July 9th, thought we could try a new SW park, South Lakes Park, just off I-44 and 119th St. Exit to the West.

www.okc.gov/parks/southlakes/index.h
tm
l
That leaves the East side of OKC for the rest of the month, got to try Regatta Park downtown, along the Oklahoma River and the Boathouse too. Then there is a nice park in Moore that is shaded and that would be great in July. So got to keep this Spark going. emoticon emoticon

Yes, we take requests, so want a park a place near you, suggest it and let's see if we can make it happen.

@ Ella, great idea, I am all but convinced... most likely will be in on this, and I would love to do more nature walks.

My ultimate dream... this is like a banana split for a kid kinda deal.

A Native American guided nature walk telling us about native OK flora and edible plants and or herbs. Wow, that would be so awesome. I remember doing something similar in Boy Scouts back years, uh many moons ago, ya! emoticon

Hey folks, I was looking at today's paper and found something we might be interested in. It's on the front page of the Metro State Section on the right side. Its about a night hike at Martin Park Nature Center on July 3rd at 8pm to catch fireflys and learn about insect behavior. There is a $2 cost and you need to register by calling 755-0676. Registration is limited so the sooner the better if we go as a group. I think it would be fun!

I think we'll bring the boys tomorrow, Bailey & our foster westie, Jack. Tuffy has a knee issue and really shouldn't be doing too much walking & I don't want to leave her home alone. Jack is 14 months old and has LOTS of energy! You're right, they do need an icon with white dogs for me!!

Turns out soccer try outs are also that morning, at 9:30, Eldon Lyon is literally just minutes away from me so I really don't have an excuse to miss! Where are you guys parking at? Down by the pavilion by the playground? If so, then I might go a bit early and park on the other side so I could walk like halfway with everyone!

Ella-Great news for Jasper!! He was so good! Who wouldn't love him. I don't know that I even heard him bark? Another success, how fulfilling for you. Hopefully this situation with Joe will fix itself soon. That's a lot of anxiety!

Gretchen, I'm sure the kids are super happy about morning practice, even if they don't like getting up early emoticon emoticon

I won't be on the walk this Satuday either, I have some dear friends from home (Ohio) staying overnight. They're headed for home Saturday afternoon so we'll for certain see everyone at the game. Looking forward to seeing everyone!!

That's wonderful news about Jasper!!! He's such a sweetie!!!

So to hear about Joe. Kidney stones bite, as my husband tells me. He's had 3 of them. Hopefully he passes it soon!!!

Joe still hasn't passed the kidney stone. He's back to work with pain relievers if the pain starts back up and they said he should pass it on his own. It is extremely painful, it took three different pain killers administered at different times in the ER to give him some relief. He sees a specialist next week.

Since he hasn't passed it yet and the pain can reoccur at a moment's notice, I think it's best we don't walk Saturday morning. Too much stretching or jousling can cause him pain. We should still be able to make the ball game since there's not much physical activity involved. Don't plan on us being there unless things change between now & then and I'll let you know if they do! See everyone at the ball game!!

I am so happy to hear this, and how is Joe's health? We were wondering?

Hope that is over with, it can be quite painful I understand.

Bob, Susan & Gretchen I wanted to let you know that Jasper is going to his forever home tomorrow-he's been adopted! He's the scottie that we had at Joe B Barnes park. I'm sure it wont' take long for us to get another foster dog, but wanted to let you know the good news!

I won't be there again this weekend, as my son has soccer practice again. His coach has decided to take pity on the kids and move their practice to Saturday mornings instead of the evenings! Last weekend though I did walk around the field so I was with you guys in spirit! And I will hopefully be doing that again this weekend!

Sounds like a plan to me! We can meet at the furthest parking lot from Portland which dead ends into first parking lot. Continue straight to get to our lot. We'll be parked right where we want to cookout. Thanks for hanging in there for the decision making process!

@ RGaffner517-not sure I can make the 4 mile run you can but I'm willing to meet you earlier and run as far as I can, right now that's about 1.5-2 miles, then I've gotta take a short walk to recoup. Who knows, maybe I can do the whole thing with a partner :)

I've still got Martin on my radar for a future walk since it gets such good reviews!

Sounds good. I think I will be able to make it up to Stars and Stripes this Saturday, 9am right? The 18th I am running in the Limbs for Life 5k at the Zoo with my mom, so I will miss that trip to Regatta Park.

Let's kill two birds with one stone. emoticon emoticon

How about Sat. 6/11 at Stars and Stripes, Lake Hefner, and then switch back to Regatta Park on the 18th tentatively.

This way we can scout out Stars and Stripes for the tentative picnic on the 7/9 date and any one running on that day can also scout out the course.

I'm OK with this. emoticon

I (again) won't be able to make it. The AC people are still fixing our ceiling and are scheduled to come back Saturday morning. I've not been to where you guys are going but I've been tossing the idea of riding my bike there.

Susan mentioned Martin Nature Park. I've been there and loved it! I don't know how long the trail is but there are many places to loop around and make your walk shorter if you need. I think they have trail maps in the little office area. It's been a few years since I've been there, but it used to be free and I'm sure it still is. There are even benches to sit and rest if you need, or if you just feel like doing some bird watching. There's also a fort/tree house area for the kids (or kids at heart!).

The river walk is a great idea but not this weekend-huge drag boat races going on this weekend by the boat house and all along shorline. www.okcmotorsports.com

I won't be able to join next week but I definitely want to go there!

Dolese is out for sure, Stinchcomb is the land of the great unknown and sounds like it may be more like Dolese for trail quality. I hate to suggest my old standby, Hefner but it's nice. I'm up for suggestions...I'll dig around more this afternoon.

Gretchen we'll miss you and take a picture in your honor-I know how much you love pictures emoticon

I like the river walk idea!!!

I have been on the south side of the river at Wilbur Post park, that is off of S Robinson, and Regatta Park is across the river near the Chesapeake Boat House, and that trail runs westward from there.

I really like this idea, as that has a nice walking path and is not NE, but it is at least in the NE direction and has a parking lot.

Here is the link.

I plugged the Stinchcomb trail along River Rd. into my dailymile and it said that the road was 2.5ish miles one way. I didn't find a trail separate from that. Just River Road. Have you guys walked from Regatta Park in Bricktown? Always wanted to run/walk along the river there and that is in a fairly central location. I think the path is marked so you can tell how far you have gone.

Hey, this is like cooking... sometimes it works out... and sometimes, we learn not to do that again ever!

So, I am up for an adventure. If I remember Christopher Columbus did not have an interstate highway when he discovered America.

So pick a place, the time is 9 AM, and we GO!! 2KITTIES is taking us on a 'Mystery Team Adventure"

The one at Dolese is very random (once you get into the woods more), it seems like it was just kinda made from several people walking/running it. There is a small part of it that goes around the little pond area that is tight and might require single file. That park is where my son actually practices/play soccer so I have been on the trail once, it is nice, it can be muddy though.

And it turns out I won't be there this week, as my son has practice at 10 am (at a different park this time). But I would love to try any of these with you guys any other time!

Well, after digging around on 3 different websites, I have concluded there just aren't any parks that would fit my citeria (1/2-1 mile) for NE quad. I know there's been talk of the zoo but I think that would be better for a group outing since there is an admission charge.

Soo....I'm look at either Dolese Youth Park (5105 NW 50th) 2.1 miles, unpaved trail...
Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge, entrance on NW 50th, north of Overholser (can't find reliable info on trail length, maybe 2 miles?)......
My personal favorite new find (haven't been but pics look nice), Martin Park Nature Center 5000W Memorial, 3.5 miles and very shady nature trail.

I've noticed not all parks are on the OKC.gov parks & rec guide so if anyone knows of a park on NE side, please let us know. I'm a newer Okie so haven't gotten around to some parts of town. Martin may be too long for some too. Hate to be indecisive but feedback would be awesome!

Had a GREAT walk on Saturday with everyone. I'll post more photos this evening. Had a very busy weekend and just wasn't able to manage getting them up. Planted 120 bedding plants yesterday so my back and shoulders are pretty sore! I had a great time on our walk as did the westies, Bailey & Shayla and our foster scottie, Jasper!

I like the idea of each weekend in June too. The 18th may be iffy, I'll have friends in from out of town and they are leaving "early Saturday"-not sure what that means so I'll be a last minute groupie that day.

Should have a nice crowd tomorrow! Hope everyone can sneak out :)

Gretchen, I hope that you're able to sneak out and take a walk with us and meet the dogs. I'm looking forward to meeting you! I certainly understand if you can't though, I've been through the sleep overs. I don't know why they call them that, no one ends up getting much sleep!!

Bob, I like you idea of walking at different parts of the city throughout the month. I'm not sure I can make all of them, but I'll make as many as I can. I really enjoy them, it really starts off the weekend on a good note. Good exercise & good company-doesn't get much better than that!

Hope to see many of you tomorrow at Midwest City!

Ella, right now I am only allowed to love from far! It doesn't seem likely I'll be able to make it now after all as my kids have managed to beg and plead for sleep overs, so I'll have an extra 2 kids in the house. But, I'm gonna still try to get up early enough and sneak out....I have a feeling that I'm gonna want out of the house and have some adult time!!!

Had a flash.. I see a pattern appearing...

This Sat. 6/4 @ 9 AM we have a Walk and Talk at Midwest City, that is the SE.

So... 6/11 saw some one suggest a NE location near the Zoo... pencil that in?

Then we got lots of regulars in the NW so 6/18 how about Eldon Lyons or Stars and Stripes,

Finally to complete the city circuit, how about 6/25 at Earlywine or some SW park?

Putting this out there... possiblilites....???

Gretchen, please come join us-I'll let you walk the Scottie if you want. His name is Jasper and he's up for adoption through Oklahoma Westie Rescue. He's around 3 years old, as far as we can tell and is a sweetheart! He's full of energy so I know he'll enjoy the walk!

We may bring our foster Scottie in place of one westie since we dare not leave Tuffy home alone. So we may have two white dogs and one black dog, either way we'll have three dogs!

I would LOVE to walk a Westie. :) Thank you so much for sharing them with our group! And fellow sparkers are good company too of course. I won't be able to commit until the last second as I'm kinda on call for work Saturday. If I show up I'll be in a blue Hyundai Elantra. I think with 3 little white dogs in tow, the group will be hard to miss. :)

And I wouldn't mind a running partner to run with. I am going to start training for a half marathon that I will run in September, but most of my runs are only 3-4 miles on days during the week so training is not too crazy. I live not far from Earlywine so if anyone is interested in running a few miles a few days a week with me let me know!

The park has it's own parking lot off of Reno. The one closest to the walking trail is on the west side. If you're coming from the west down reno, it will be the first parking lot you come to. If you're coming from the east it will the last parking lot. If you've driven through the park at Christmas to see the lights, it's the parking lot beside the exit.

We'll be there this Saturday. Do you want me to bring three dogs again? I don't think Tuffy's leg is up to a 2 mile hike yet, so I'd better leave her at home.

We'll make sure to get there a little early, so look for us with three westies. We'll be in a dark blue Nissan Altima.

The official address is: 8700 East Reno, Midwest City, OK 73110.

Hope to see everyone there!

I like this, a new area, hopefully we can get some people over in that area, so looks like the place and time are in place and I am in!

Love it! I'll let the Westies chase the ducks.

I think this is the place, you mentioned. I guess we would meet near the library?

I'd like to check out the Joe B Barnes park, sounds pretty. I know it's a quick turn around but teh Saturday walks really motivate me, otherwise I would spend the whole morning watching food network. I'm game for this Saturday if anyone else is free, same time, 9?

We have a nice walking trail at the Joe B Barnes park in Midwest City. It's off of Reno between Midwest Boulevard & Douglas. If anyone's interested in getting together for a walk there let me know. It's a little over a mile long, so to the end & back would be approximately 2 miles. It goes through a nice shaded area too and is beside a stream part of the way. We usually see ducks and sometimes squirrels. The park itself is very nice too, although much smaller than earlywine.

emoticon emoticon emoticon Yep we do them all, by yourself, with kids, pets, and our better half, make some time this month to meet up with some fellow OKC Sparkers, I don't have a count... not that important, but we still are seeing new faces each time, so if you have not made it yet to a Walk and Talk, make this the month to meet up.

If you like post where and when it is good for you, and hopefully some one will catch up with you. We have been to quite a few parks now. Eldon Lyon, Lake Hefner, Earlywine, and in Moore. See you there.
