Hey look everyone, I actually logged some real miles - outdoors, even! Since I was pretty much at 5 miles indoors I figure I'll start again outdoors.

Friday I saw an orthopedic surgeon. The good news is that while he agrees with my regular doc that I will eventually need to have my right knee replaced he also doesn't think that I'll need it for a while yet. His estimate based on the x-rays that were taken late in January is that I could go 10 years. The problem has been that arthritis is narrowing the spaces inside my knee joint - both between the patella and the femur and between the femur and tibia. As a result, the cartilage on the back of my patella became inflamed. While there are no nerves on the back of the patella, inflammation has a way of affecting everything, so the whole knee has been inflamed. He gave me a cortisone shot to, as he said, put the fire out and I'm continuing with the oral anti-inflammatories. He will do the shot every few months if I need it, and going along that way I should be able to put off the replacement for a few years. I left the brace off on Saturday but spent most of the day on the couch and since then I've been gradually increasing my activity. Our temps came up yesterday and between yesterday and today most of our snow has melted. Its a little soggy out there, but not dicey underfoot so I figured I'd go out. Now I'm home with an icepack on my knee (it doesn't hurt - just insurance to keep the inflammation down).

Well, so much for using fitbit miles. Lost my fitbit in the Lima, Peru airport on my way home Monday. Right now I can't used the elliptical (at least for a few days) due to sunburn. Every move makes my bra straps rub against the sunburn. And, like most places right now, it is way too cold to walk outside.

So, I had to make a trip to New York to look after a few things at my parents. I was away the whole first week in February. And we had snow...started a few hours after the Super Bowl was over. Then we had snow and a wintry-mix a few days later. I am no longer a northerner and I wasn't overly pleased. Have to say though that it was pretty, when I wasn't shoveling it! I am now back in North Carolina. Everything is under control with the parents for the moment. The good thing about this, is that I have definitely rested my overuse injury a lot of late. I did manage to walk on February 1 & 2, but then the snow set in. I'm going for the 46 mile walk, though I think the weather here in NC is about to conspire against me again.

Well, clearly I'm walking more than I thought I was, though I'm still impatient to get to where I can get back out and work up to my normal mileage. My steps will decrease now that I'm back in my apartment, instead of at my sister's house as I was for the last couple of weeks.

I finally remembered to pull out the pedometer yesterday - good thing I had one with me. My doctor called about the lab tests and x-rays a few days ago. No R.A. or lupus. I didn't think I had either but its nice to have it confirmed. My vitamin D was quite low, so she's got me taking D3 every day and taking prescription D2 once a week. She said that the flat bones in our bodies, which include our patellas, absorb vitamin D. I don't know whether that means that the low D makes my pain worse or the arthritis caused the low D, and maybe both of those are true. The arthritis in my right knee is moderate to severe and in my left knee is not far behind. I need to see an orthopedist, but my primary doctor thinks injections will get me back on the road (sidewalk) and I won't need surgery. If the orthopedist agrees things could be much better soon. In the meantime:

I'm back! Although you won't see me posting for about 1 week. Leaving for vacation tomorrow and won't be back until next Monday. Head down to Lima, Peru to visit the family I stayed with as an exchange student in 1983. Haven't seen them since. I can't wait! I was able to walk a lot more than I signed up for in January so I'm upping my mileage for February! We'll see if I can do it! I walked so much in January (unfortunately) because our weather has been so dry (drought). Our temps have been in the 60's and even 70's while the rest of the country is freezing ... it is so crazy! I don't have a treadmill, so all my mileage is outside. I really DO wish it would rain!!!
